Would you go ahead and pick up a Grand Wagoneer? I’d love to know what one of those suckers is like in real life.

“ It’s really great you do the rescue work, @stickguy. My wife is starting to look for another pup to rescue and we had an application interview with one of the rescues today. Man, I’ve had job interviews and state background checks that were less thorough than this”

I can understand wanting to be careful in placing pets with suitable owners but sometimes those rescue personnel take it too far. Our last cat was a rescue which my wife and son went to get. As you said, it was like a rough job interview and in the end they were rejected because we wouldn’t agree to never let the cat out of the house. That was a pretty stupid condition since on the farm everybody has to earn their keep and a cat is more effective at rodent control than poison. My son was very upset that he didn’t get the cat and the owner follow him out into the parking lot and handed the critter to him since she thought the rescue group was unreasonable too.

On our current cat the shelter was having a free giveaway, all shots and neutering paid for. The process was basically “here you go” and we walked out with a pet.

So…we just put a deposit on this Bronco, located at a small town dealership in Michigan.

We have an order in (no deposit) at a local dealer for a 2 door manual in this same color. But you know, I enjoy searching anyway, so have been looking online every evening just in case something came up. Most listings aren’t actually available, and anything that is on the lot and available has a markup anywhere from $10k on the low end up to as much as $30k.

This one was advertised with a $2,500 markup, so I made an online inquiry last night and the salesperson called me promptly this morning saying it was available.

$30k markup? Boy, I could use a few new friends who had that kind of money.

I was actually rejected by one specific breed rescue because I wouldn't promise to walk the dog twice a day. I explained that I had a fenced back yard, and a dog door in my house so that my dogs had access to the back yard 24/7, but that wasn't good enough for them. Go figure.

The interview was not that strict, though we haven't been approved yet either - but they did want to make sure we had a fenced yard, that we weren't going to be upset if we found out the dog was of a particular breed (she's a mutt, for sure but if one was so inclined to do a doggy DNA test you might find out something you don't like), that we were longtime dog owners, etc. If I had to boil it down, I'd say it came down to "are you really going to take care of this being and give her a forever home no matter what" and the questions were designed to suss that out without asking it directly.

@breld - so effectively you're paying a $3k premium + shipping to get now vs. waiting?

That was an interesting story in and of itself. Bosch wrote the software which allowed VW to get past the US smog tests. If the car were driving at a steady speed (I seem to recall 60 mph), then the software knew it was being tested on a dynamometer and switched into "compliance mode" or "low emissions mode". The rest of the time it worked in higher performance / higher fuel milage mode, and emitted a lot more emissions.

Bosch tried to claim they wrote the cheating software only for "testing" purposes, but I don't think anyone outside of their corporate offices ever believed that story.

@henryn - thanks for the helpful suggestions. It’s an “old school” design with a single panel on the bottom to access the two RAM slots, a PCI-e connector, and a 2.5” SATA slot. I’ve already been in once to upgrade the factory HDD to an SSD. I may experiment with running the 4K monitor at a lower resolution, if it doesn’t cause picture quality to suffer too much. It is nice to be able to pull up four nearly “full size” windows at once.

If you're running 3840x2160 at 60 hz, you would be better off leaving the resolution at 3840x2160 and dropping the refresh rate to 30 hz. If you're already at 30 hz as that is the best your computer can manage, well ... I don't think you will like the results when you lower the resolution. The only way to know is to try it and see what you think.

Congrats on having an old school design that's easy to get into. I think the manufacturers quit building them that way as it cost an extra 50 cents per computer, and most end users are never going to know the difference.

Having seen a new M240i in person I'm underwhelmed by the styling; I heard several people say it looked better in person, but not me. Still, a Thundernight RWD M240i with the proper options wouldn't be terrible- although the car doesn't give me a "gotta have it!" vibe.

I don’t think any current BMW gives me that vibe. I think it rather serendipitous that BMW and Toyota work together these days since Lexus has been called the Japanese BMW and now BMW has become the German Toyota.

Yes, the 2 door was our preference, but also fine with the 4 door.

We won’t rush to cancel the order on the 2 door - can’t imagine it’d be hard to swap if that’s what we still want.

And I do believe even the 4 door Bronco is shorter than your Maverick. Has a lot of presence, but it’s only a few inches longer than our M340i.

Haven’t made the final decision on flying out and roadtripping it back, or just shipping it. We were talking a lot about a fun roadtrip, but I think we’re now leaning toward going the simple path and shipping it. I went through Shiply and received several quotes, with the lowest being $1,200. Any recommendations on a shipping company?

I’m surprised Manheim isn’t much more than MSRP, given the crazy asking prices. But for one, asking ain’t gettin’, and two, the auction results may be more conservative and realistic versus the dealerships shooting for the sky.

Either way, I hope and assume it’ll maintain its value just fine…just not a money making flip. We’ve gotten so spoiled with this market!

Bronco is just a car that to me feels way bigger than it might be on paper. Some combo of having to climb up into it, and the overly large and tall hood. And width (and window size and shape of the doors can exaggerate that).

I also found that overall length is not as big a deal (within reason, as long as it fits in the garage!) as are proportions. Our odyssey was long (201" I think) but the hood was short and front visibility was great, so it drove like a small car if you weren't backing up. Maverick is largely the same. Feels a lot shorter.

but cars where they are long and tall hood (so more car in front than behind) drive much bigger to me.

    if that makes sense!

The 4xe deals are on a lease and CCAP passes it on as a customer incentive. You can't claim an EV/PHEV lease on your taxes since you aren't the owner. When you check RV/MF with the Edmunds hosts, they'll let you know if there is any incentive being passed along.
