I’ve only heard of the problem with Ford but any lug nut can be over torqued to the point of damage. I’d be willing to bet that if a torque wrench isn’t used when installing lug nuts they are either over torqued or under torqued. That’s why all manufacturers have a torque spec. It would be sheer dumb luck to hit the correct torque spec without a torque wrench.

Lug nuts don’t have to be torqued exactly to the required torque spec but it better be within +/- 10% of ideal if you don’t want stud damage or wheels that fall off.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. 10% is a little too tight on that tolerance. Heck, torque wrenches vary more than that in and of themselves, and in most cases the way you operate the torque wrench can vary the reading by quite a bit. I would say, as a general rule, no more than 20% under or 10% over. And of course, this is a "dry" reading. If you lube them (say with anti-seize), all bets are off.

If you have a torque wrench that has an accuracy greater than 10% or more you might as well not have a torque wrench. I can get closer than that without a torque wrench and I’ve proven that to myself countless times over the years.

FWIW, when you don’t know how to use any tool you have, you shouldn’t be using it. Call The Guy. Of course a lot of them don’t know how to use them either.

Mistakes can be made...they shouldn't, but they are going to happen. But it seems the garage did everything possible to make sure the problem was corrected, and then they backed it up. I give them a lot of credit for doing that. Would I go back again? Hmmm, I don't think so.

I overheard an interesting conversation at the airport today.

It seems that a customer had reserved a 392 Hemi Challenger through a corporate account but when the company checked they found out he didn’t work there. When asked to explain he became irate. He even showed them his flight itinerary even though when they checked the flight didn’t exist. Evidently while they were trying to verify his information he went and slept in the car.

Eventually he got out of the car, the agent retrieved the keys and locked it preventing him from getting back inside. They told him they wouldn’t rent him anything under these circumstances and the guy just walked away.

Why they didn’t call the police I don’t know. Maybe they were afraid of getting a bad survey.😆

Among other things.

I’m not sure of the full backstory but I’m guessing he was behaving suspiciously. Plus they might have gotten a heads up when they tried to bill the corporation.

I’ve never had my id checked when using our leisure corporate rate, but I always fully expect to get asked. Probably why no one asks.

Yeah, I think it's trying to bill the corporation. Probably didn't have the proper account number.

No one has ever asked me about using the corp discount (even though I'm retired now). It's part of my account profile

I did have a Hilton desk manager ask me how I got such a low rate in Arlington, TX, when there for the Cotton Bowl, though. Hey, got it off the website..

I still use my corporate number when booking hotels and rental cars. But, I'm still working for them part time as a contractor. Still, most of my hotels/rental cars are for leisure activities. I used to use my corporate credit card for all of that. But, I tuned that back into them. So, I cover it with my own credit card.

We had to rectify our expenses on the corporate card with an accompanying expense report. Without that, we'd either be charged back or have the amount deducted from our paychecks. If you no longer worked there, that would be fraud and theft.

My former company had an entire accounting department dedicated to expense rectifications from those of us who traveled. They knew if we tried to book a hotel that wasn't listed in the "approved" categories. Same with rental cars.

That said, now I front the business expenses myself, and submit a detailed expense report with receipts for reimbursement.

Still, I can't imagine getting away with trying to use the corporate credit card if I was no longer an employee. That would land you in court pretty quickly.

I guess it all depends on type of the card. My old company gave Amex Corporate card to every employee for their travel expenses, but they made employee responsible for payment and it would go against their credit score. The payment terms were deferred, i.e. even thought it would say "Pay in 30 days", but it would really be, I think 60 or even 90 before the payment would be considered late. Essentially enough time to be reimbursed through the accounting. Later they added Concur to that, which significantly sped up the processing time, many expenses were processed so quickly they would be paid off even before end of the billing cycle and the managers would have been notified of the purchase fairly quickly by the system. Certain expenses, like airline tickets required approval for final payment to be made to Amex, who also acted as the travel agent (so they guaranteed the fare until then). So buying a car and disappearing would simply be not possible. It almost sounds like an urban legend to me, but perhaps in old times there were fewer safeguards. I just think you can't really hide from with a car - you need to register it, registration has an address and bottom line you become a fugitive from the law. I did hear of abuses on much smaller scale using so-called "purchasing cards", which were given to select employees to make purchases like office supplies, equipment, etc. and some secretary thought it meant she could buy jewelry or personal electronics with it. Charges were pressed. Bottom line most criminals are not too bright.

There are stories of one driver before my time who thought he was such a valuable asset that he took the chase vehicle gas card home and used it to fill up his personal car. His foolproof plan (he thought) was to use the office supervisor’s entry code to log in at the pump.

Eventually the bean counters asked the boss what he was doing gassing his car on the weekend and the trail lead back to this character who was caught on camera at the gas station.

At first they were just going to fire him but he arrogantly claimed that he worked hard so he deserved a little bonus. They had him arrested and then fired him.

The government here did the corporate card thing similar to what @dino001 described but with even more bureaucratic hoops to jump through. I never even had a thought of trying it though because as he described, you were still responsible for making the payment and your credit score was compromised if the bureaucracy screwed up or was late. There was absolutely no advantage to the employee in having one and the rewards points or whatever went to the government. I couldn’t understand why anyone bothered.

across a few iterations of my company the corporate Amex was always in your name, with the bills coming home. There was some integration with the expense/payroll system so you could put your expenses in and have the company pay directly to Amex. but anything not expensed was being sent to you.

My current employer’s company card program is where it is in your name and you pay the bill. I didn’t take one as I don’t see the point. Expenses are paid fairly quickly and always before your statement is due.

In my past company I had a true corporate card that the company paid the bill. In later years it was tied to an online system where you could upload the receipt and cost center on each charge and that became your expense report.

I did slip up one time and put a personal charge on my company card. I had just gotten a new card due to an expiration date change and it looked exactly like one of my personal cards. After I realized it, I just paid it back. Apparently it happened fairly often.

I was surfing a little Friday evening and decided to go look at my Chase Auto account - who Subaru likes you to finance through.

I decided to just pay them off. I did so with the Ascent, but before I hit the button do it with the Legacy I remembered that the Legacy is at 0% interest. I left that one alone.

The point is - I didn't think about it being a Friday evening so it didn't post until Monday. I figured they would want the extra interest, but they actually credited me with (I think it was) $2.43.

I remember hearing about old wives tales like that, back in the day, but I NEVER did it. When that car started up your lifters must have sounded worse than a loud 6th grade orchestra out of tune.

A few days ago I was going thru the Tim Horton's Drive Thru to get 4 coffees for the tennis guys. I haven't had a donut in over 20 years but I picked up these new ones they advertise on TV, Chocolate Peanut Butter with cream cheese filling. So the guy in front of me gets his order, and slowly his car goes forward right into the high sidewalk. He backs up to get out and I back up just in case. Then he turns and leaves. I say to the guy at the window what was that all about? And "The Guy" says "Beats me, I see that kind of thing happen every day".
Then I park and carry the coffees and donuts over and there is a big chunk of black plastic on the curb. There are parking spaces and the curb juts way out beside the end space. Then I notice tire marks going over the curb where the car hit the curb and he must have scraped off his front bumper guard....and he left it there, all for a cup of coffee!

Good point, and that was my thought too. Distracted drivers have replaced impaired drivers as the largest source of accidents in Ontario Canada.

A few years ago before covid when we still used cash a guy was going thru a Tim Hortons drive thru. They have those strong metal poles by the window so cars won't hit the order window. The customer dropped some of his change, he opened the door to get his change, somehow his foot came off the brake, the car went forward and the door hit one of those pillars and his neck got caught between the car door and the pillar (he died). I always put the car in neutral when waiting for my order.

Some drive thru are terrible. Narrow with very tight turns at the exit. Based on all the wall scrapes many people hit something. Those jutting out curbs are especially nasty.

If you’re investments pay more than the interest rate there’s no reason to pay off loans. I say that having paid off my last loan 7 months early for no good reason.

A place Mrs. venture loves that we go to for ice cream has a curb on both sides when you are leaving. The one on the left, that you can see from the driver's side, ends sooner than the one on the right that you can't see. You must turn left or right. The one on the right is covered in tire rubber. Whoever built that mess should be tarred and feathered.

Well, Mrs. venture is considering getting an Outback. The 8 seats in the Ascent are being used less and less. (Someone told her that would happen).

Not having a donut for 20 years could explain your problem.

I eat them fairly regularly. But I only eat 3 kinds. Granulated sugar, jelly and cake doughnuts with granulated cinnamon sugar. The type you’re eating can’t be good for your health.

Sounds boring......Choco - Peanut Butter Cheesecake donut with Reese's pieces in the middle, S'mores on the left...now that is a donut worth breaking a 20 year fast over. I've had 3, now I will go back to not having a donut for another 20 years.

That’s sounds like a basic donut I might actually like but I’ve never seen them around here. With the coming of Fall I should keep an eye out for them, I guess.

I remember hearing about old wives tales like that, back in the day, but I NEVER did it. When that car started up your lifters must have sounded worse than a loud 6th grade orchestra out of tune.

It did. We didn't care.

The valve lifters in the days when my dad did that on engines were mechanical. They were already noisy. LOL
Running the car less than a minute or 2 was enough to dissolve some sludge. That process was a leftover from the days of nondetergent oil. I believe when I was young was when detergent oils came into use for autos, but not for some farm equipment. So the flush with kerosene was effective.
I recall call in radio shows in the 60s 70s saying to put in a quart of transmission fluid to help clean the engine by driving it a short time with the high detergency of the tranny fluid in there.

Careful, they’re addictive.

I’m currently on a soft ice cream phase. I’ve got the whole work crew into it too. Almost every trip we find a place. Summer is over too quick so you gotta get it while you can.
