We were getting groceries today and one of these went by. Can anyone explain the reason for buying something that looks like this? It has so many elements of bad design I don't know where to begin....but small windows might be a start. Is it because someone wants a car that looks macho, or is it to be obnoxious, does it say, "I don't care what you think", or is it a car for techies, or people who hate cars......

Sorry if it offends someone, but tastes vary, just want to know what goes through someone's mind who would buy one.
We had one guy at tennis and when someone showed up in a new car, he'd say, "How come you bought such an ugly car?".

Hey it's better looking than the Aztec.

I'm not so sure about that, especially if the Aztek is a single color.
And I'm a recovering GM addict in the 10-step program.
I still have a plan to buy up every Aztek I can find and sit on them until they become quirky classics worth big money.🤪🤪🤪

Oh, if you are looking for a good investment like that get a hold of me i have a wonderful deal for you, but please no checks cash only.

The company we're being acquired by has an ESPP, but I think they only offer a 5% discount on the stock price. You still get the lower of the two prices at the beginning or end of the purchase window, so it's probably still worth doing.

When we did ours (in the '80s), it was a 15% discount, and purchased quarterly. You got the lower of the two prices from 1st day or last day of the quarter. No-brainer.

But, a few years later, they took away the discount and purchased it monthly. When they expanded the amount you could put in the 401K in 1992, we stopped purchasing the company stock. But, we have about 1150 shares between us now, so not all bad!

I'm shoveling my 25' driveway 10 minutes at a time. 5 inches or so with a couple more possible during today's storm. The media terrified everyone predicting possible feet of snow.
To the south of Dayton, folks did get more snow.

The hill on southbound I71/I75 in Northern KY was blocked by semis not able to climb the hill.
That's in @kyfdx country. I saw picture but couldn't capture it when I went back.

That hill has been there, so I'm not sure why it wasn't salted, sanded, congo-line plowed.

I shoveled one side, this morning, behind my wife's Macan. With over 6", I'm not sure the GTI would be able to clear the "berm" at the end of the drive, where the street was plowed, overnight. My wife's car did just fine, even though it was in reverse. (dentist appointment.. 2 miles away)

Northbound in the "cut in the hill", this morning, semi jackknifed, and they were directing people off the freeway onto the surface streets. Southbound up the hill seemed okay.

I was spending Christmas in Orlando a few years back and they had the TV on and gave a cold weather waning they said "Get your winter coats out as it's going to get cold out there" I heard that and I started to pay attentions seeing that normally in northern Illinois as when they say that they mean it. However they went on "It's going to get down to the low 60's tomorrow". So the next day the wife and I were out walking in shorts and shirts among people wearing heavy winter coats.

It's an easy time of year to spot the tourists around here! Cold snap coming later today, and everyone apart from visitors from up north will be bundled up for the next week or so.

Hey girl, nice to see you are still kicking around. Come visit us more often, been missing you.

I noticed that. When it gets into the 40s in Florida the ski parkas come out.😂

It happens every year when it snows for the first time. I usually see more Jeep type cars in the ditch than anything else, they think they are invincible. They know 4WD is better in snow, but they don't realize it won't help them as much on ice.

So yesterday was my last day at work; it was also a nice final week. Monday the Judge took my two assistant prosecutors and myself to lunch; Thursday and Friday a few attorneys and police officers stopped by. The judge also had some nice things to say at the start of my last motion docket, as did the AG at yesterday's swearing in of my successor. I checked the stats and my office closed 2,534 cases over the past six years, which I'm very proud of. Most of the credit goes to my staff (five in total); I picked intelligent women and Ididn't micromanage them. Also, I had their back if someone gave them any cr*p. It was a great six years.

    Congrats!!!!!

@roadburner and @kyfdx ....you guys are relatively local to me. So, for the first time in a few years, we got snow that was more than a dusting. I was prepared. So, have been hunkered down since Saturday. We've still got schools closed today. I did a little unofficially measuring and we got 9" up here in Butler County.

Can't think of anything I need. Food is stocked up. Brought in some dried logs from the back yard for the fireplace. Made a TP run to Costco last week, so all good there.

Won't get above freezing this week. So, given I need nothing, guess I'll stay indoors for a bit.

Snowing in CO today. Not too much - maybe an inch or three. Took the Subaru to get the tires rotated, and they asked if I wanted to replace the spare donut. It's 10 years old - I suppose it could go bad, but I've never heard of such a thing.

Depends. If you never need it, it is fine. But, if you do... that could be a different story! I'm in the same boat as you, though. It's easy to let the donuts go stale and hard to justify replacing them. My recommendation is to inspect the tire, make sure it is inflated properly, and check for any age cracking. Maybe add some conditioner to it to help it age more gracefully.

Don’t tires mainly degrade because of exposure to sunlight?

My tire inflator on the Mustang prompts me to replace it every five years. Don’t know if it really goes bad or not.

I read an article on the R&T website that reported that the Wrangler continues to outsell the Bronco. That said, Wrangler sales have dropped dramatically- in large part I believe due to the (over) pricing strategy of Stellantis.
In my case, my positive experience with my nearest Jeep dealer and my negative experiences with my nearest Ford dealer made the Wrangler/Bronco decision easy for me. If the tables were turned I most likely would have gone with the Bronco.
Finally, I took this picture because to me the Bronco appears smaller than the Wrangler, but side by side it's a different story.

    I have a serious question.

Here is the background on this for those that missed it. I bought a $1000 Samsung 55 inch TV a few weeks ago at Best Buy but it’s going back because the sound cuts out every so often.

So, what makes a $1500 TV better than say a $1000 TV? If you’re going to say the picture quality, I have a tale to tell about that.

We had to go to Sam’s yesterday (there is no Costco in my town and I’m not going into the Burgh to join the one there), anyway, as soon as you walk into Sam’s they have all their TV’s on display, so I decided to look at them. I couldn’t tell the difference in picture quality from just about any of them. I’ve pretty much decided I’m going to get an LG, so I honed in on those. For the life of me I couldn’t tell the difference in picture quality between the one that cost $379 (55 inch job) from the one next to it that cost $899 and for that matter the one that cost even more (I can’t remember exactly the price of that one but I know it was over $1000).

Just for grins I went on line and saw that Best Buy has the same $379 TV for 99 cents more so there goes the talk about that TV being made just for Sam’s and it’s cheaper at Sam’s because it’s made cheaper. BTW, Sam’s offers a 3 year warranty on the one I want whereas Best Buy offers the standard 1 year warranty.

I just thought of this, the more expensive TV’s at Sam’s had a 5 year warranty and 1 more HDMI input (I only need 2, one for the TV signal and one for the soundbar) so that would account for some of the price difference but not all of it, or at least I don’t think so. And here may be the best part, the $379 LG TV has a traditional full size battery powered remote vs. the hard to hold solar powered mini remote that the Samsung has. Life can’t get any gooder than that. B)

My old man eyes may be trying to save me some money. So maybe I should be listening to them or should I say, believe what I’m seeing.

Any thoughts from you whizz kids?

The sense I get with my set is that picture quality all depends on the signal source. It is an interesting thing as for the first year or so I never noticed much difference. But recently there are some sources that result in a much better detailed and refined picture when I’m watching those, unlike others I’ve seen before. It seems that finally here we are getting high-quality signals were weren’t getting previously.

Much of the pricing difference is based on branding and feature sets ('cause, you know, it's rare that a television is *just* a television anymore). However, some is based on the technology behind the screen, and whether you can "see the difference" or not is up to the beholder.

OLED is a big jump in display tech versus the older LCD tech. In LCD, there is a backlight that is always there while OLED actually lights individual pixels. Perhaps the difference most noticeable is that an LCD screen, when on but "black", is not as black as it is when off due to the light. When you've been watching it and the screen goes black, it looks black, but when you just turn it on, even if it is still black, it's not as dark. With OLED, unless the pixels are actually lighted due to displaying colors or whites, it really is black. You turn one on, and it remains black until it displays something else.

In this sense, it does have a crisper appearance and can shift scenes more crisply. But, for most of us who are watching the performance on the screen rather than the performance of the screen, it is mostly just a difference in price.

*As @ab348 says, the source can be a factor. Often the TVs in a store are running off of DVDs or an internal source, not from a cable, those pictures are clearer.
*Cartoons come out the best on a TV, make sure you are watching a regular program
*The big discount stores definitely use cheaper models when they have a big sale like after Christmas Day. You'll find that the model number is only available from one store.
    * I found Best Buys own brand of TVs, Hisense didn't look as good as the name brands around it. But, then again, this Hisense model gets 4.5 stars and is only $280 - Hisense - 55" Class QD5 Series QLED 4K UHD Smart Google TV (2024)

I am not much help, those are random thoughts. but caveat umptor....let the buyer :/ beware.
Here's a link to the Hisense model:

OLED is a better picture by far. It’s also better at reducing glare. If your old eyes can’t tell the difference and your room is either shady or you don’t watch daytime sports, get what you want!

A little excitement in the 'burbs, today.

When I came back from getting the tires rotated, there was a Sherriff's deputy vehicle parked in front of a house on my block (Tahoe, for those who are interested).

Didn't think much about it, until the wife and daughter left for work around 12:30 this afternoon - got a text from the wife that said the bomb squad was now there and that part of the street was blocked off.

About 10 minutes after they left, there was a loud explosion. I went to check on things, but there was nothing to be seen. Trying to get more information from a local news source, but no luck so far.
