I've been lamenting the same to the wife, Porsche's don't nearly depreciate this fast!

Porsche would have to depreciate to well below 0 to be worse.

I feel really bad for anyone that was just retiring now and had needs to use their portfolio to help pay for it. On top of likely issues getting SS going now. Going to be some serious rethinking of plans. Hey, collecting cans to return for the $.05 is almost as much fun as a trip to Europe!

If you're cutting it close, then you might be in trouble..

But, you should never be the one that has a number, and as soon as you hit it, you can quit. That pretty much guarantees you're going to be at the peak, with nowhere to go but down.

Of course, plenty of people don't get to choose when they retire.

they certainly are not shy about asking prices. I don't care if it only has 92 miles that price has to be nuts. especially since if you buy it you pretty much can't even drive it.

On the Porsche, and not the portfolio, I hope? My portfolio hasn't been down as much as I thought it would be, so far.

Only one point of light, but I've been dealing with the SSA for the last few weeks, while calling the national number has led to long waits/press 1 to get a call back (which sometimes doesn't happen)... dealing with my local office has been fine. It may take a couple of tries, but I've gotten real folks on the line who knew what they were talking about and were quite helpful.
I believe I'm all set with SS/Medicare for my retirement eff. May 1.

@roadburner Is the GT4 raffle the Larz Anderson? Cool place...

The tires look a bit too big on the giveaway truck and it would look better with an original style grille.

the current overall craziness has me less cranky about sucking it up to do another 2 years on the hamster wheel. with the hope that the situation is better a year from now so we can move it up. If not, at least it will be fun doing the countdown.

I know it’s all unrealized paper worth. But if my spreadsheet says I’m a lot poorer we are going on an austerity budget to make up for it.

Doing my part to help deepen the recession we are already into!

So if the greedy politicians who want to tax unrealized gains get their way would the stock market drop give you a tax credit?

from what they have proposed so far, the only given seems to be that no matter what happens, I will get hosed on the deal somehow.

The current administration doesn't seem inclined to tax unrealized gains but they certainly seem hellbent on taking money through other means. Anyway...

There were points in my life where redeeming cans supplemented my income. I still bring a few bags to the supermarket for the cash.

I vaguely remember the final days of "bottle deposits" and returning glass bottles, before everything went to aluminum cans. Thanks for making me feel old.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,705
when I was a kid it was before the deposits on everything, but a glass company near where I lived paid by the pound so I used to collect bottles from people and one of my parents would drive me over on a Saturday to have them weighed so I could get some spare cash. Not a lot at I think a penny a pound!

I still return bottles/cans for the .05; I joke that the redemption machines are the only slots I play that I always win!

@laurasdada - I'm partial to the limoncello flavor of La Croix. Aldi usually has them pretty cheap. Also, the coconut pineapple flavor of those 16.9 oz. ICE bottles is pretty good.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,448
I remember in the 80s when the bottles were worth ten cents and the cans were worth five.... That was actually decent money back then! Today.... the redemption is the same (ten cents), but the value? Nope! Not even close to worth the time. I just crush them and drop them at the aluminum recycler when my bin is full.
