Would appreciate your advice on my potential trade:
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Year / Make / Model: 2001 GMC Yukon SLT
Body: SUV
Engine 5.3L
Driveline: 4WD
Mileage: 79800
Color: Pewter / Gray leather interior
Options: Loaded - Leather, 3rd row, sunroof, tow, OnStar premium rear audio, running boards, premium factory chrome wheels
Interior Condition: Non-smoking interior, good, couple of small stains on the floormats.
Exterior Condition: paint glossy, no chips, washed/waxed regularly. 2 small door "dings" on the passenger side (1/4 - 3/8"), 1 small ding in the rear chrome bumper (1/4"), No repaints, no collision damage, no insurance claims.
Tires 60%. Rear brakes just done 5000 miles ago. Did all maintenance myself, so I have some records, but I can't hand them a service history or anything.
Have title in-hand. Am looking at trading towards a Honda Pilot.
2 questions:
1 - I've seen arguments for both - is it better to disclose a trade right away or negotiate the car price first?
2 - Since my original post, my rock flew up and cracked my windshield. It's not fixable (4", on passenger side). I have an estimate for $250 to repair the glass with a lifetime warranty (which won't really help me since it's not transferrable and I'm selling/trading the car). Should I get it fixed or take the hit on trade-in value?
Thanks so much for your help!

It is a former BMW employee lease out of Spartanburg.. I bought it with 8K miles.. BMW did $4K of body work on the right side (disclosed at auction), before I got hold of it.. To my untrained eye, it looks perfect... evidently, all new panels on that side.
It looks as good as a 38K car can look... no door dings, french fry attacks, etc.. The only interior wear is a little on the driver's sport seat bolster, where you slide in the car..
Assume the tires have 60% tread left (just put winters back on).. All maintenance done under the BMW plan... warranty until 50K miles or April, '07.
Interested in the ACV trade-in price, assuming it didn't have that body work...

Hard for me to place a number on it with $4,000 worth of paint and puddy ... they're some really good body men out there -- it will all depend on how good the dealer is .. me personally I check everything with an Elco, then I get serious ..l.o.l...
The miles are fair, color is good and If it's really nice and it doesn't need anything (Carsmack history.?) .... BA (before accident) trade side, in and around the low/mid $20ish figure, might get real lucky and see a dealer struggle to get to the $21 number - big maybe ... if they find the work and get all negative about it, then it could be worth anywhere between $15 and up ...
Let me know how it goes ........

I was really worried about a low offer, because of the body work.. As I said, it looks "perfect" to me... and I'm pretty sure that BMW NA had the body work done themselves before sending it to auction, so it is topnotch.. It isn't like they would miss it... It is noted right on the vehicle history report..
And...the bodywork must be great, because they came back with $21,500 ACV.. I was really expecting under $20K...
So, the wife is getting a new car...
Thanks a lot..

1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE
3.8L V6 FWD
Mileage: 104k
Color: Green/Charcoal interior
Options: Power drivers seat, p/w, p/l, not much else
Condition:
- Bought the car in Texas three years ago with only 40k miles on it. No rust anywhere
- All fluids maintained per manuf. maintenance schedule
- Tires at 50%
- In the last few months: New shocks, new intake plenum, new engine computer, alignment, rad flush.
- Has cracked windshield, I have not fixed it because it's on the passenger side only
- Paint in good condition, very few door dings/scratches, definitely above average for a 1995.
- Interior is also nice, no french fries, sucker sticks, or bubble gum
I'm thinking asking $3k and cut her loose at $2,5. Is this a fair asking price or should I aim higher/lower?
Thanks! ** ..

Mornin' Caddyluver ..... >>> Has cracked windshield, I have not fixed it because it's on the passenger side only ...
What.? do you think the next owner won't have any passengers..? ..l.o.l..
Always give people 20 "good" reasons to buy a vehicle .. not 1 or 2 reasons to pick-it apart or even worse, walk away ... FIX the windshield, it shows pride of ownership.
The color is kinda weak, the miles are loooow for the year and the 3.8's (properly serviced) will run 150k++ .... remember, clean cars get clean $$ and dirty cars get dirty $$ ... trade side, it might be worth $1,200/$1,500 .... with a wonderful detail, a fixed windshield, a super glorious Ad in the big Detroit paper and all the service records duct taped to the headliner, then: $3,495 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $2,5/$2,9 ... keep it lookin' like it is, then go to Home Depot and get 200lbs of potting soil and make a planter out of it ......
Terry :surprise:
Just make sure that's "real money" and they haven't slipped a thousand or so into the new vehicle - or they don't roll back on the figure ... see, the big BMW auction is running today in Columbus and there's probably 350 Bimmers rolling thru lanes .....

I'm the one who recommended Tobacco Road. How'd you like it??? I played it back in 1999. We watched Payne win the US Open, they stayed a week in the area and played Pine Needles and Tobacco Road. I loved the course. I think a better analogy is "Tobacco Rd is like Pinehurst #2 on 'Barry Bonds' steriods!".

They have their own body shop at the Performance Center--I'd guess that's where it was fixed. That might explain why it's undetectable. Wish I could find a local body shop like that!

Engine: 2 Liter 4 Cylinder manual
Driveline: RWD

Interior is like new. A bit dusty but nothing to note wrong with it. Exterior has 1 very small door ding on the passenger side.
Tires - new
Brakes - no issues
Maintenance - Dealer maintained. Records available.
Other: 1 repaint on the front fender because idiot nicked me in parking lot.
I negotiated the lease deal on the new car before I got to the dealership... We had already agreed on that price.. Supposed to pick up the car this coming Friday (which is now Monday..
Anyway... having that "floor" under me, made the decision easy.. Knowing what I could get from them, I sold the car privately for $22,700...
It's been a good week...

Sounds like it could be a nice one .... the miles are low low low, the color is right right right, we even have a little power seat action .. basically a base 4 banger LE with tiny little miles and a small scratch in the transom area ...... if it's really a nice one, no Jack in the Box under the seats and no curb burners .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $12's, might see the low low low low low $13's with the low miles and the good color .....
Me personally.? .. I would run this dude down Retail Rd .. get with the detail gods, run a nice slick 5/6 liner Ad in the Big paper and: $15,900 *asking* and let someone verbally abuse ya at $14,9/$15,5 --- but take it .... properly done, this one will last about 33 hours ...
Good luck and let me know ...........
Terry.
I would appreciate a price for both trade-in and private party price.

Out there in Houston ......... we have a 04 el Coupe' Accord EX V6 .... the miles are almost ok, the color is no winner in Houston and it's a handshaker -- where's the good news..?
If it's clean, no Dutch Boys, no curb burners and no $2.00 car washes ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $17's low low $18's maybe ..... the color, the 2 dr and the handshaker will hold this one back ....
Retail Rd.? .. tuff car to sell with any real $$ on your side and not a real big demand .. most dealers will sell a new one for invoice money, maybe *ask* $19,900 and blow and go at $19ish(?) - tax savings in Texas, right.? .... what's your pay-off ..? ..
A Prius is a nice car for some folks ... just make sure it's the right vehicle for you .. not knowing the pay-off and how long you might keep it, most times these end up costing more and taking 10 years just to break even - make sure you drive one and put some miles on it ... EX V6 and a Prius.? ~ 2 separate vehicles doing 2 separate things, thats why many Prius's's's's get traded early ....
let me know how it goes ......
Terry

From what I have been told, there has been a lot of changes since 00, big makeover, whatever ...
Did I like it ..?? .. I - LOVED - IT.!! ... my biggest mistake was not getting the yardage book when we first started ~ Yikes.!! .. -- because you can get lost just in the first 3 holes ..l.o.l... but the spotters were super nice and super humorous .. but you can bet I grabbed that sucker for the back 9 ... I loved it so much we played it 2 days later with the son and his wife of one of the golf reviewers from Golf Digest - and he went nut's ..l.o.l.. ... we ended up playing: Little River (nice), Tobacco Rd (twice), Mid-Pines (ho-hum), The Carolina (excellent course and almost as "bad" as Tobacco Rd, but a different style and my 2nd favorite), Talamore (big $$ course, veeery nice) and the Legacy (big big $$ and lots of pomp and prestige, super nice though) .....
Thanks for the tip ............. :P

Now the bad......
No oil pressure on start up when its cold, it will come up after 15 secs or so, not sure if its the guage or what. Heat isn't working so good, it gets warm, but not real warm. Dent in the top of the tailgate (don't try to back a trailer with the tailgate down). Scratches and dings here and there, not too bad, paint is glossy. Cleans up pretty good.
Runs strong, no click click in the 4WD, no *I forgot how to shift* in the auto tranny, all accessories work fine. Tires are deep in tread (both sets).
It does have a hot start on it for warming Kermit (the skidder) up so would probably have to replace the hoses that we cut to install the hot start.
I think the Dodge is in competition with Kermit over who can spend more of our money......not to mention we are doing a volume of firewood now that's over the Dodge's head (pulling bigger trailers now). (84 cords in 6 weeks = $12,600)
What do you think? Retail road? Trade? Donate? LOL Then the question is what to buy next? F-350? F-450? F-550? :confuse:

I have no idea what the car gods say ... but I have a pretty good idea what I'm going to say -- "there's no bones in Ice Cream"
Anywaaaaay .......... excellent description - tanks.!
Sounds like a few drive shootings that have been filled and puttied, we got a few meteorite hits that have been touched and shot, and then we have a couple of terrorists attacks to some minor pieces without the OEM brand .... all in all, "maybe" not such a bad driver being an 01 4 banger Accord with 67k and some hydes ...
If if if .... it looks and drives like a 04, the paint doesn't look like a science experiment, the rubber is deep, you're still not using a hair dryer to dry it out and the leather doesn't have that 10 inch nail look ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $8's low/mid $9's ... that said, from what some of the Lafayette/Baton Rouge dealers have been telling me, they seem to be paying a little more than normal because of that minor flood problem (minor..????) .. so that makes think someone could *ask* $11,900 and probably see $10,9/$11,5 ..... so let me know.!
Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving ..........!

Condition is best described as rough, which was the term used by Edmonds when determining the value of a used car. If you need more specific information, let me know.
Required body work several years ago but that was promptly repaired. Some scratches.
According to a Honda dealership, it needs about $1500 to $2000 worth of repairs.
I own the car free and clear.
Thanks!
But it depends on what it needs... if it's safety related, it has to be done, like the frt suspension or slack in the steering... but if it's not, one might just drive it until something breaks.
Any Civic that runs ought to be worth $1k on a quick sale and maybe more, but "rough" isn't much of a description. We'd need a better idea of what it looks & smells & feels like, and what repairs are "needed".

Wrecked when almost new, got Tboned in intersection, frame not bent, about 5K worth of damage repaired by reputable body shop with genuine Cadillac parts. Cars drives fine and you couldn't tell it was hit unless I told you (well maybe you could, most could not).
What do you think for a trade in on a new 50K Caddy?

Wow, I didn't expect such a quick response as I was about to provide more information. But after reading your post, I will get another estimate as to what needs to be done and how much it would cost. The mechanic that I would take it too for a second opinion has been brutally honest about the condition of 2 used cars I was considering and didn't charge me for the evaluations. I trust him.
My inclination is to agree with you that it isn't worth anything. But when I previously purchased a car, I made the mistake of greatly undervaluing the old car and I don't want to do that again. Then again, time is money so I am not going to drag this out too much longer.
Thanks again for responding so quickly.

Very good/Excellent shape. Very clean inside, non smoking. No rust. There are only a few very minor dings on the rear doors.
No accidents.
Brakes, tires, everything good.
All maintenance records.
In other words, very well taken care of. I think it is about as good as a 7-8 year old car can get.
I am looking to trade it in on a new Subaru, and with the snow flying in Minneapolis today I figured it may be a good time to trade.
KBB says something like $4K trade, NADA says closer to $5500 trade. Pretty big swing.
Thanks Terry.

Interior is flawless-no leather cracks/rips, rugs/mats clean, non-smoker.
Exterior has some very small stone chips on outside mirrors, front bumper and front edge of hood. You can't see them from more than 3 ft. About 1 year ago, the driver's front door was sideswiped in a parking lot. The outer door skin was replaced, all repair and paint work done at the dealership. You can't tell the difference. Two approx. 2" hairline scratches in passenger side door, can be airbrushed out according to body shop. One 1 1/2" square paint scuff on corner of rear bumper that was touched up professionally. The texture is not perfectly smooth, but the color matches and you can't tell from more than 3 ft.

This one bought as basic as they come. A/C and CD/Cassette standard, but no slider, crank windows and manual locks. What can I say, it must be genetic, but at least it has cold breeze. :P
Condition can best be described as great from 20' away. When washed and waxed paint still shiny, never near a body shop. Look up close though, and we do have 6 figure mileage's worth of stone chips, door dings, and scratches here and there. Interior sort of the same. Seats look hovered in, and it generally cleans up OK, but by no means close to excellent. It's been a driver, and honestly looks it.
Maintenance is there though. All recent in the last month: tires, front pads and rotors, OEM shocks/struts and coolant flush. Also, car got a new crate tranny courtesy of Toyota at 65k, and while that was R&R'ed the clutch got done too.
This will strictly be self-retail. I'm thinking ad in the Daily Rag for $6900, and look to get $6400-6500ish? I'm kind of figuring this one falling into the Hon-yota universe of still getting dumb money with stupid miles. If you think less, I may just keep it and drive it into the ground. Thx.

Good description -- tanks .!
These are funny little dudes - but they sell .... you just have to have this little word in your vocabulary called: Patience.
Don't ask me why .. but it depends on the barometric pressure and the alignment between Venus and Jupiter, and if your brother-in-law hasn't been snoring between 11:12 pm and 12:54 am ..... sometimes these sell fast, sometimes they sell in 2 months - it's guacamole thing .. but when they sell, they seem to get all the rhubarb in the pantry ....
You know the drill by now: deep sneaks, a 5/6 liner "Fat Daddy Ad" in the Big paper, spend the $$ on a detail, keep it in the garage (if possible) and have all the service records glued to your forehead ... as far as price, I think your dead on the money, maybe even a little light, but you want to sell it and "not" make an Easter bonnet out of it, because it's a base model with the meat cleaver ... $6,900 *asking* and $6,0/$6,5 gets a new driveway .......
Let me know ..................

Need your advice. I am trading in my volvo s80 for the new c70 at the dealer that I purchased the s80. The car is in excellent shape (I had all the service intervals and repairs done at the dealer where I purchased the vehicles). I'm looking to determine what the fair price of the vehicle is on a trade in. Specifics are as follows:
1. 1999 S80 T6 Black exterior leather interior (wheat)
2. 94,000 miles
3. only option is the improved traction control
thanks
Mark

Your crystal ball is off a little today: You gessued bethlaham PA, so you were only off by 40 miles. Are you psyco or something?

trade in will be in the Philadelphia PA suburbs
