2001 Toyota Tundra v8 -canopy -trailer pkg + hitch -4x4 -95, 000 km -$20 050 Canadian
Meanwhile, I have an offer or $13 500 Canadian my my '97 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Laramie, standard cab long bed, with 64 000 KM on it (not a typo) in excellent condition. Should I take this, or would it be a good time to sell?
I'll give ya a break on this one because I can tell you're new to the biz .....
In the land of the Ka-boys (Dallas Cowboys) ........
We have a 03 Ford 2wd (reg cab) F150 XL with 69,000 big klicks and a handshaker (no help) .... IF~ the rubber is deep, the breeze is polar, the interior doesn't have that Bonnie and Clyde look, the bed liner doesn't look like Baghdad and it looks/feels and drives like 20k ..... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $5's, might see the $6ish figure if it's a "clean" short bed and the bumper is only a $500 job ..... what kills this one is the meat clever, the 6 banger and the tall miles - oh yeah, and that minor $1,500 "kiss" ... if it needs stuff, start deducting ..
2005 4Runner 4WD Limited, V6, auto. Red, grey Lthr., S/R, 10K miles, for $29,987, at a Toyota dealer in MA. No CPO, no side airbags, or other options, just all the "Limited stuff". Looks very nice from the pics, if you like that bright red.
Also: 2004 4Runner SR5, V6, auto., 4WD, Pacific Blue, Mileage 18,033, $25,475, & TOYOTA CERTIFIED, at a different Toyota dealer in MA. .
And: 2005 4Runner SR5, V6, auto., 4WD, No CPO, Silver, at a Toyota dealer in MA. Mileage 17,074, $26,995.
No S/R, Lthr, or side air bags on the SR5's.
I still have my 2000 bmw 528i wagon, 6 cyl, auto, premium pck., lthr, S/R, black/tan, 24K miles, CD changer, a 1" dimple on the hood, crack in the front plastic air dam, no kids, no food, no smoke, all service records. 2 tires getting worn, but I have 2 new I can put on. Interior is.......as close to new as can be for a 6 y.o. car. Fairly pampered, w/o getting crazy with Zymol & stuff. Mass.
What would be a good price to pay for any of the 4Runners? And what should I try to get for my car in trade, or if I sell it privately? I'm getting "the itch" (I know, there are salves for that) as the CPO warranty just ran out on the bmw, & I'm tired of fooling with snow tires every winter for a RWD car. TIA!
2000 Honda Odyssey EX 70k miles Auto sliding doors Gold/beige color Great shape mechanically, fairly new tires/brakes normal wear and tear - nothing other than a few spots inside; no dents, etc. No leather Dallas area
ok got the value on the accord so now looking at TLs
Mostly shopping new but I came across this on Acura of Baton Rouge lot.
04 tl w/ nav grey w/ black guts auto 13k looks average for an 04 CPO and all of the hubbbalubbb
They are asking 32,999 which is more than invoice for an new 06. Got a quote for a new one for 34,130. Hardly any changes for 06, now has a TPMS and longer PT warranty. Would I be better off just buying a new one? That is what i'm thinking. Also if I were to buy new, how much would a meat cleaver kill me on resale?? MSRP is the same for stick or an auto. :confuse:
We have a MY 2000 BMW 323i, here in Edison,NJ. My adult wife is the primary driver so not driven hard. It is a 4 door sedan with a mere 44,500 miles on it. Red exterior with cream leather interior. Garage kept. Sport package includes split fold down rear seats with ski-bag, heated leather seats, alloy wheels, power sunroof, BMW alarm system 6 cylinder gas engine, STEP automatic transmission, RWD.
NOTE: I have installed multiple manufacturer (OEM) upgrades that did not come as original equipment: - BMW Leather Armrest - BMW CD Player with XM kit installed(Sirius- compatible) - BMW CD Changer in trunk - BMW Wood grain accents including doors, dash, shift knob, e-brake - BMW Chrome Exhaust tips - BMW Universal Garage Door Opener (Homelink) - BMW Mud Flaps - Blizzak snows mounted on BMW RIMS
- Brakes and rotors replaced less than 1000 miles with upgraded dust-free pads - Tires have about 70% tread remaining - Regular maintenance done incl synth oil and filter changes at 5K miles (BMW recommends 15,000) - New air filter, new wiper blades - Passes NJ tough inspection standards.
Car is truly perfect..no dings, dents, paint work or anything.. No insurance claims, clean CARFAX, clear title
Mileage averages about 24MPG combined. Premium fuel used since new.
Would appreciate hearing what experts think the car is worth.. Also, whether it's smarter to take the lower trade in $$ to get the sales tax advantage (NJ sales tax is 6%) or sell it privately, and lose the tax benefit
It's a really nice car, but it's gotten too small for our family.
..... As much as I like the TL's (great cars) .. a pre-owned 04 is not the way to go, only because their resale value is waaaay too high (and thats a good thing) ...
With a perfect history, the dealer probably has the strong $27ish figure in it, then add a little CPO action and a little this and that, and it probably hits the table around the strong $29ish figure ... even if you could "steal" it at the $27ish (which I doubt very much) figure, plus the tax, the wax and the roof racks - you're still better off to go to the 06 ...
There is nothing wrong with a meat clever .. -until- you go to trade or sell one on the streets .... they're kinda like a "Carnival Red Jag", everyone thinks they're cool, everyone wants to drive one and everyone looks at em' .... but it sure gets quiet when it becomes "sale time" ....
I always love those stories over at the "prices paid" forum, where the folks are raving how they saved $900/$1,200 because they bought a stick ... funny though, we never hear the stories about them having an Ad in the paper for 2 months while trying to sell them ~ or that $3,000 "hit" when they do ..l.o.l....

Listen to Terry's sage advice on this. A couple of years ago I tried (unsuccessfully) to sell our Honda Civic EX w/ "meatcleaver". In the month I had it advertised most everyone who contacted me through our local paper or Autotrader was immediately put off by lack of automatic even though it was listed in the ad. In the end I decided to keep the car and I continue to drive it. It's now 12 years old and I'll probably keep it for another 3 years barring any catastrophic problems. At that point the sales price differential between and auto/manual will be pretty insignificant because of age and mileage and I probably won't get much for it anyway. It doesn't help that I live in a small town, was selling when gas was cheap(er) and am in the heart of big truck country where little foreign brand sedans are viewed with suspicion or bemused indifference.
Few folks are sufficiently obstinate in their determination (or is it mental incapacity?) to hold onto a car for 15 years, so if you are one of those buyer's who unloads after 2-3 years be prepared for a rude awakening when it's time to sell it yourself or trade in.
It's amazing how the stick-shift fanatics rant & rave so much about "only wanting a stick-shift", but then where are they when you go to sell your car? I suspect you're right tho about your EX stick being hard to sell because of your location--I bet in a big college town, or coastal metro-area, it would have sold.....
I don't know the value of your car. But you "might" do well selling it privately because of all the upgrades, & if it's Really Nice. One thing for sure--a dealer won't give you much more because of all the extra maint., & upgrades. Are there any of the accessories you could easily remove, & sell on e-bay (w/o wrecking the car, of course)?
Definitely don't just give the snows & extra rims to a dealer if you trade it. They should be worth a few hundred $$ selling them privately (& now's the time!).
Oh wise one. Trade-in value? Probably send it down retail road. Value? Trying to help my ex.
Portland, Oregon 2000 Subaru Outback limited wagon 2.5 4cyl automatic AWD THE BAD 128,000 big big miles :-( Color: Winestone (dark red) Usual limited options: leather, sunroofs, heated bun warmers, windshield, mirrors, cd player and subwoofer. Good condition. One owner. Interior has some wear. A small tear in the rear seat and a few scratches on the inside (big dogs). Outside has the usual parking lot scratches/dings. Nothing major. New tires, brakes good, complete maintenance. One minor accident and one funny accident. Rear ended = rear hatch and bumper cover replaced. 1 funny accident... ex-mother-n-law went to get the mail at the end of her street, and backed into the mail box turning around (said the Subaru accelerated to fast???) = small ding in rear quarter panel repaired.

Very nice condition in and out, new tires about 10K miles ago, no dings or scratches, good paint, brakes done about 6 months ago. Maintained by dealer according to maintenance manual.
Wrecked when almost new, got Tboned in intersection, frame not bent, about 5K worth of damage repaired by reputable body shop with genuine Cadillac parts. Cars drives fine and you couldn't tell it was hit unless I told you (well maybe you could, most could not).
What do you think for a trade in on a new 50K Caddy?
Could you give me the trade-in value for the following vehicle?
Location: San Francisco, CA 2002 Honda S2000 Berlina Black 2 door sports coupe convertible 2.0 Liter VTEC, 4 Cyclinder 6 speed manual transmission RWD Mileage: 18035 Major options - CD Player Clifford After Market Car Alarm Soft convertible top Cruise control Power windows/locks Condition: Good condition, small rip in the convertible top due to rubbing on the folding mechanism Tires - still new from low mileage Brakes - very good Regular maintenance done at the Honda dealership including all scheduled oil changes. No accidents.
.... **then trade side, in and around the low/mid $5's, might see the $6ish figure if it's a "clean" short bed and the bumper is only a $500 $100 job .....**
Try it down Retail Rd ..... finish any service, get a spray liner, get with one of your Audi detail buddies, drop a fancy smancy 5/6 liner Ad in the Dallas paper and: $8,900 *asking* .. and then sing the song "All my Ex's live in Texas" at $7,5/$8,5 .... it's a "shorty" and it should sell fast (properly done) .....

It's got the Prem pack, good color, auto, bun warmers, solar glass, 24 hour Howard Stern, looooow miles and the 100k warranty ...... no kisses, no Dutch Boys and no curb burners.?? .... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $26 region, might "maybe" see a dealer struggle to get to the $27 figure - maybe ....
Anyway, stopping at the dealer tomorrow, so how about an update on my tC
2005 Scion tC, flint mica (dark gray), black interior 11,000 easy miles 5 speed, of course other than a couple of small scrtaches, pretty much clean as the board of health (at least after I wash and vacuum it). In NJ Still passess for newish, since it is.
What say the oracle about what I could hold out for (against a new Subaru), or try for on retail road? This one I much prefer to trade.
Hi Terry I have been a long-time lurker on the Edmunds forums and have always enjoyed your colorful and informative trade-in advice.
Please fill me in on your best trade/retail price I could probably get on the following:
Johnstown, PA 2003 Chevy Malibu LS 4-door 3.1 V6 FWD automatic 30,200 miles Redfire Metallic/Tan Leather Alloy Wheels/spoiler/moonroof/CD+Cassette stereo/pwr seat/keyless entry/gold emblems & grill trim Interior is flawless-no leather cracks/rips, rugs/mats clean, non-smoker. Exterior has some very small stone chips on outside mirrors, front bumper and front edge of hood. You can't see them from more than 3 ft. About 1 year ago, the driver's front door was sideswiped in a parking lot. The outer door skin was replaced, all repair and paint work done at the dealership. You can't tell the difference. Two approx. 2" hairline scratches in passenger side door, can be airbrushed out according to body shop. One 1 1/2" square paint scuff on corner of rear bumper that was touched up professionally. The texture is not perfectly smooth, but the color matches and you can't tell from more than 3 ft. Brand new all season tires less than two months old. Brake pads replaced at last servicing. All scheduled maintenance done at dealer/oil changed every 3k.
Thanks for your help in advance. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend. Paul
Looking at Two 2004 Acura MDX Tourings in N.H., both private sellers:
1. 30,400 miles, silver/black, think it might have a couple of extras like wood trim & running boards. Asking $29,500. Not wild about the miles, but I do put on low miles myself.
2. 19,000 miles, white/grey, asking $31,900. The white is boring, but I prefer the light interior, & the miles.
Both look nice from the pics, w/balance of 4 yr. warranty. Both say they're replacing with Odyssey minivans. And NH has no sales tax--so not much advantage to them to trade. What price(s) should I shoot for, & is the lower mileage one worth $2400 more?
I wrote you over the weekend and am looking for a trade in value for my car. I apoligize if you responded but I could not find your answer. I need to see if I am being offered a fair price.
Here again are the specifics
1999 Volvo s80 t6 with advance stability option Black with wheat leather interior. 94,000 miles Interior and Exterior (some minor surface scratches, Interior in good shape. All service intervals and repairs performed by dealer. Tires have 25% life remaining Trade in Philadelphia Pa area Brakes serviced within the last six months - good shape.
Dealer (where I purchased the car) is offering $4500, sounds like a rip off as Edmunds and Kelley appraise the car at $8 to 9k)
..... See if they'll do $29,0 ..... but that "almost" $27 figure was based on it being a trade ....
Sooo, lets figure he dropped $26,500 into it ... a little service, a little this and that and it should float to $27ish .. then add the CPO and I'm thinkin' it would hit the table in the low/mid $28's ...... $29 might work, but I'm thinkin' $29,9 might be the figure .. hey, ya never know, it's tumbleweed time and they may want to cut and run ...........
..... I remember you ... you're the guy that lives in Bethleham PA ....
Right down the street from Lehigh University ... we have a 99 S80 T6 with 94k ...
The miles are tall and the color becomes ho-hum at this age ....
If-if-if-if the service is 110%, no Swirlomatic car washes, the interior doesn't look like Katrina stopped by, the rubber is deep, no KFC, no paint by numbers and it looks and drives like 50k, lets just say 75k ....... then trade side, in and around the super tall $5's low/mid $6's ... $4,500.?? .. either your not telling me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth ~ or this is one ruff S80 T6, or the dealer is smokin' something ...
$4,500 is waaaaaaay weak, even with 95k (unless you've been using it for dumpster) .... $8/$9,000 ..?!? - not on this planet ~ and I have know idea where Edmunds or Kelly get their figures ..... $6,500 would kill it on a trade and $8,950 would be a good retail *asking* price ..........
I'm looking for a trade in value on the following:
2002 Chevy Tahoe 4WD Z71 4 door 5.3L flex fuel V8 4WD 43K miles Black exterior, gray leather interior, no 3rd row seat pretty much loaded -- LT/Z71 package excellent interior condition good exterior - no dings, no scratches, minor rust (only rear bumper where it meets the flat plastic top). original tires new brakes at 36K miles oil changes every 5K miles
accident free. no damage. no claims. no leaks. everything works. original owner. South Bend, IN
Dealer offered $15,500, then increased it to $16,500 with a little pushing. Is this a fair trade in deal?
I cant remove the upgrades, since I already sold the parts I took out that they replaced. I'd still appreciate a "round about" number from Terry since I have numbers all over the place.
Local BMW dealer has similiar non-CPO, in not nearly as clean or low miles shape, and asking almost $20K !!!.. I know asking is not selling, but I'm HOPING I can see $15K in a trade so I can also get the tax advantage...
Terry: Trying to help my dad with his caddy in Phoenix. Thanks for any info you can provide. 2001 Cadillac Deville 4 door sedan Standard Northstar V8 with auto FWD 55000 miles tan or desert beige exterior, cashmere interior Options: alloy wheels, heated leather seats, memory seat positions, reverse sensing parking aid, stability control, rear airbags, cd changer and homelink. Very nice condition in and out, new tires about 10K miles ago, no dings or scratches, good paint, brakes done about 6 months ago. Maintained by dealer according to maintenance manual.
Wrecked when almost new >>>>>> got T boned in intersection, frame not bent, about 5K worth of damage repaired by reputable body shop with genuine Cadillac parts. Cars drives fine and you couldn't tell it was hit unless I told you (well maybe you could, most could not). What do you think for a trade in on a new 50K Caddy? Tcasboy ===============================
Good description - Thanks ...
Kinda hard to guess with that much paint and putty work ...... lets say BA (Before the accident) ... the miles are right, the color is better, we got the bun warmers, we have a little back-up beep beep action, newer rubber and you say the service has been complete ...
Carfax.?? .. Depending on the dealer, and how good their eye sight is .... trade side, in and around the tall $10's, low/mid $11's ... AC (after the accident) it might be seeing the $7/$8/$9 range, hard to say .. lets "see", what the dealer see's.
Me personally, I would run this dude down Retail Rd .. all the service records and history on the dash, get with the Dukes of Detail and run a nice "clear" Fat Daddy Ad in the big paper and: $11,495 *asking* and you cry and whimper at $9,900/$10,5 -- buy take it ..... again, this price will have to be adjusted based on what the dealer might see on that T-Bone action and how reflective the Carsmack might be .......
Thanks Terry...Car is in good shape, some small surface scratches, tires have about 25% left, but otherwise very clean, had every service interval and recommended repair at dealer....
Just curious why KBB and Edmund estimates are so off? Could you educate me... :confuse:
Hey Terry, I got one for ya. See if you can help me out on this. I live in Los Angeles, & have got a 2001 VW Beetle GL, techno blue, am/fm/cassette, cloth interior, power windows, auto, cruise control, 54k miles, front & side air bags, abs. No major work done other than normal maintenance. Clean interior, runs great, paint still shines. One quarter size ding on passenger door & one scratch (about 3 in. long - not deep) on driver side door. Other than these two issues, it's been very well taken care of. Kelly says about $8500 as a trade in... your thoughts? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

2 Tone Paint (Ivory & Beige), Hovered in Seats, some small rock chips in paint, no wrecks, new rubbers, new stoppers, maintenance up to date, leather stuff, 3rd seat, the dual breeze, solar glass, traction & stability control, balloons all around including front curtains, 17" alloys, JBL Sound with 6 Disk CD plus Cassette Player, auto climate control, tow package, roof rack, running boards.
You must take this to Carmax. They are listing the twins to yours for $17,998 (that makes no sense to me). I have sold late model low mileage cars to them twice, and they later listed them at about 120% of what they paid me. Using that incredibly weak logic, I think they might give you high $14s.
"Why do dogs hate when you blow in their face, but love to hang out the car window at 50mph ....?"
Severe human halitosis? My one dog has no room to complain since her favorite snack is cat turds. That canine's breath should be bottled in some defense lab and used as one of our chemical weapons. Yikes!
2000 Lexus GS300 with all the standard goodies - sunroof, leather, ABS etc etc etc. Just 24,000 documented miles, totally like new, all service records from local Lexus dealer.
The GS300 series is 4-dr, RWD, straight 6 engine. We are in Dayton, Ohio.
even when I'm not trading or thinking of trading (rare) it's fun to read this thread. I've gotten advice several+ times. You've always been on the money and very good at keeping it entertaining. You have a talent with language. Thanks
not a bad idea, but it isn't very convenient (although I did actually see it recently on a trip to Hershey). I think it was Carmax, but it could have been carsense. Big though, sitting right off the Penna turnpike.
I would much prefer to trade in for simplicity sake, plus I get a 6% trade credit (sales tax), so 13K trade = ~13,800 private sale.
I hope to catch a dealer real hungry for an end of month/year deal. Hopefully the weather in Dec. is crappy (but not too snowy if I decide to get the Sube!)

TIA!

Thank you in advance !

Definitely don't just give the snows & extra rims to a dealer if you trade it. They should be worth a few hundred $$ selling them privately (& now's the time!).

Please fill me in on your best trade/retail price I could probably get on the following:
Johnstown, PA
2003 Chevy Malibu LS 4-door
3.1 V6 FWD automatic
30,200 miles
Redfire Metallic/Tan Leather
Alloy Wheels/spoiler/moonroof/CD+Cassette stereo/pwr seat/keyless entry/gold emblems & grill trim
Interior is flawless-no leather cracks/rips, rugs/mats clean, non-smoker.

Here was what Terry wrote about the 2003 LX470 back in September.
rroyce10, "Real-World Trade-In Values" #28224, 20 Sep 2005 7:08 am
So I see that I have a fair price on the one I am buying. Good. Just what I need.
1. 30,400 miles, silver/black, think it might have a couple of extras like wood trim & running boards.
If you get a chance, I'd appreciate any advice!
thanks, woody
I wrote you over the weekend and am looking for a trade in value for my car. I apoligize if you responded but I could not find your answer. I need to see if I am being offered a fair price.
Here again are the specifics
1999 Volvo s80 t6 with advance stability option
Black with wheat leather interior.
94,000 miles
Interior and Exterior (some minor surface scratches, Interior in good shape.
All service intervals and repairs performed by dealer.
Tires have 25% life remaining
Trade in Philadelphia Pa area
Brakes serviced within the last six months - good shape.
Dealer (where I purchased the car) is offering $4500, sounds like a rip off as Edmunds and Kelley appraise the car at $8 to 9k)
What say you??? thanks for your opinion.
Sooo, lets figure he dropped $26,500 into it ... a little service, a little this and that and it should float to $27ish .. then add the CPO and I'm thinkin' it would hit the table in the low/mid $28's ...... $29 might work, but I'm thinkin' $29,9 might be the figure .. hey, ya never know, it's tumbleweed time and they may want to cut and run ...........
let-me-know .....................
Terry.
Let me know which way the wind blows ......

Am I dreaming !?

DON'T forget the update .......
