The Nav ECU is packaged with the DVD player. There are two electrical connections to the nav ECU, and only one of these has a solid grey wire.
The Nav ECU is primarily powered by the red wire (10A dome light ciruit/fuse) on connector "A" pin 9. The grey wire ("A"-18) comes from the ignition switch via 7.5A radio #2 fuse.
I would guess that if you opened the grey wire and connected/spliced the nav ECU end to the red wire then the nav would never enter an "off" state and you would never be asked to ignore the display.
you tried the wire switch for us.. I have been known to irrevocably break electrical components when I try to fix them.. opening the cover to the Nav unit I can do.. fiddling with the the wiring on my wife's 40K suv -- nah. Anyhow, thanks for trying!
Ordered the Griffin iTrip FM transmitter for iPod, will let you know how it works out. Ray Catena service didn't want to put a miniplug into the pre-amp of my new LS430.....
Did you get your car yet? I was at Ray Catena's Thursday evening and took the GX470 and the SC430 out for drives. They had just gotten a big shipment of cars in and I thought yours must have arrived. If so how do you like it.
Nealm1 - The GX rides real nice and is roomy but I forgot to check if it had the seat extenders the LS430 has. My second time in the SC430 and I liked it even more than before. A dream car! Everyone looks at you when you drive it.
Thursday is the day. I figure to ride it home after 12pm. I wonder if I should request a test drive before handling over the check. What do you guys think?
Wwest, your comment was not very flattering to the SC, but it had me laughing like a dope for a good five minutes! The SC is a nice looking car, IMO. I'd never in a million years fit in it.. maybe if I never put the roof up.....
It's not going to hurt - but they will probably put you in a demo rather than the car you are buying.
wwest - You and I differ big time here. I was never a fan of the old SC300/400 and love this new one. And NO - I've never been on the dance floor in such a situation.
gteach26 - It's more roomy than you would think. I'm 6' and had plenty of room.
Just got the iTrip, a FM transmitter for the iPod. Been using 95.9 here in Forest Hills with my Mercedes S500 Bose radio. It works! Sounds not that different from my CD's. There is minor in and out while driving around, but very few.
Now, the real test is with my new LS430 tomorrow!
20GB = 3,500 songs at 192kbs !! No more rap radio!
At 6' 215lbs - I am trying to drop 15-20lbs. I just didn't feel ctramped but I was more interested in driving and didn't rally pay that much attention to head room etc. I also use to drive a 280zx and a Porsche 944 so I'm used to these interiors.
Try 6' 4" and 250+ pounds (I stopped counting a while back).. the SC's suspension would not like me at all, and that low roof line -- nah. I'm stuck with SUV's and LARGE family sedans. My father-in-law's LS 430 fits me nicely though. It's just a pain to deal with child car seats in a sedan.
While testing nearly a dozen vehicles this last go around; I bought along my 5 year old and his booster. The easiest SUV to put the seat was the Range Rover, even more than the LX470. The hardest the Hummer H2.
The LS430 was the easiest car with the S500 close. The worst was the BMW 745iL.
Yes,,,yes,,,yes,,,. Drive the new car before signing for it. Anything is possible... probably everything is perfect but why wonder. You will be able to tell very little with a few minutes behind the wheel, however it is possible to have some noticeable problem that would stop you from accepting the car as is. I test drive every new car I have ever purchased. The only bad experience was a bad "something" that had the steering wheel jumping all over the place at higher speeds. They said they would fix it, whatever it was....I said NO. Three days later they found me another new car...test drove... all ok...signed deal... everyone happy. They smiled when I made note of the VIN number of the car I did not want to accept, but heck...have to be careful. Do as you wish...this is JMHO.
Got it! Drove 88 miles. awful rainy weather, but the LS was very quiet. No cabin noise, creaks, etc....
Questions for those with ultra editions!!!!!
1) Does front seat massage? Or just the back? 2) I felt a tiny bit of road harshness through the steering wheel over graded New Jersey parkways. Over black paved highways; the LS was on rails and silent with zero feedback at 70mph. But the coarse NJ parkways was kinda rough, almost like my Mercedes S500. Have the Dunlop AS tires. 3) My friend thought that the LS was much quieter than the S500 which took us there this morning. 4) If I bought the car in NJ, do I have to pay for inspection in NY? I didn't notice an inspection sticker on the windshield.
Sean, I agree. Took my son and we played from the back seats. He loves the control to the radio. He was always commanding this and that with the Mercedes. Now, he has full control. The side shades will stop his complaint about the sun too!
The lined coin box is one of the touches you reference.
BTW, is there a way to program the easypass into the LS ?
A friend of mine just bought a new 2003 Luxus 430, with the NL package. First he went to Costco, and they gave him the name of the local Lexus dealer who handles their arrangements. He made an appointment with the sales person. The Lexus dealer shows the dealer price of the selected automobile to the buyer, and also tells him the Costco negotiated price for the car. It happened to be $3000 over dealer invoice. There is no negotiation!!!!. This price was much much better then any price he could negotiate with any other dealer in the area. This is a much better way to buy a car, rather then spend hours haggling.
I think not. The homelink transmitter can be programmed for gates and garage door openers, but they use a different system from the easypass.
Maybe it would work if you put the easypass transponder in the sunglass holder in the overhead console? Not sure if this would work, as they don't have easypass where I live, but it seems like it might.
The shades in the back are great for kids. Not bad for adults with headaches either!
Some noise will penetrate the cabin on more gravelly roads. On tarred highways like the Garden state parkway - at least the way it is down here (exit 123 on south) - it is whisper quiet - and I have the higher sport dunlops.
It's a great car and you should have a great experience with it. Definitely quieter and smoother than an S500 and it handles better than most people would have you believe. You should see your mpg rise to 22-23 on highway trips (in our area) and hold around 20 in heavier city driving.
I'm off on a 700+ mile trip to Charleston SC tommorrow. Last time I made such a trip down I95 I set the cruise to 75mph once I went past central VA a and 80 from NC on down and averaged out in the high 20's. I need that 83+ degree water to make my family happy.
Don't forget about the restaurant Nicholas when you are in for service. Someone at catena can tell you where it is as it is nearby. You'll get a great meal there.
Thanks on the info! I might next time I go to Oakhurst.
I had to drive another 15 miles tonight, after the baby's asleep.
The lumbar adjustment for middle and lower back is far better than the 1 setting on my S500. The leg extensions is also a plus; as I did not get fatique after my 80+ miles trip this morning. The section of the GS from Catena to the turnpike was 115 to 10-something, and it was not black top. Funny thing was that the other direction was, and my drive to the dealership on the S500 felt smoother. Of course, I had much more cabin noise on the S500 than on my LS. But it is unfair to compare a 3 years old car with a 2 months old one. We're see in a month, since the creaks started on the S after a week.
The really harsh Holland tunnel/lower Manhattan cobblestone roads were handled by the LS without any drama. Tonight's ride on the Grand Central was very smooth. The Dunlops are not quiet tires, but I liked the sportier feel. I agree with you, the steering and response when I left each toll booth was very reassuring, and the visibilty in the rain, as I crispcross several lanes to merge was effortless. The S500 felt like a BIG car, the LS feels much smaller.
I think the rainy weather might have also made the Dunlop ride rough. I can'twait for a sunny dry day to test this car.
A small list of pans: 1) I did not like the windows washer sprayers on top of the hood, concealed under the hood is cleaner. 2) No massaging front seats. why? 3) The directionals have to be fully engaged, simply tapping it does not signal.
If you are a poker player and can risk the chance for a 2003 Lexus, as the quantities are winding down ahead of the 2004's. You should bargain tough and start with the invoice price of the trim of your choice. Use the internet services to bid your price to all your local dealers. When one or two are near your bid; then contact them by going there. Test the car, and tell them that you are ready to buy and have competitive offers in hand.
You could get the invoice if a dealer has a car in the lot and are afraid of not clearing it before month end; and possibly not selling it before the 2004's roll in. I have found that the larger dealers are much more willing to discount once I say the "cash" word.
Finally, there just might be some incentives like 2.9% APR and COACH editions on the LS over the final months before the 2004's. Here, you are risking not getting your choice of trims and color choices. Already, my choice of black aniline leather is no longer available if I were to order now versus 1+ month ago.
Lexus mentioned in a recent trade article they are studying the feasibility of a hybrid V8 as an alternative to Mercedes and BMW V12s. It would have the same power but without the gas-guzzling consequences. No mention as to what Lexus vehicles this possible engine would be for, but I would think the LS would top the list.
The article also said the hybrid RX will be called the RX 400H. It will go on sale next spring as a 2005.
Put another 300 miles on my new LS. Think I did 500 miles in my 2001 S500 over the first 5 weeks; so I must like this new car.
Question for you guys. I found the only manufacturer defect so far in the car. There is this 2 inch long surface scratch on the aniline leather in a rear seat. Since I did not inspect the interiors and no one sat back there, I am sure it was there before I picked it up. Seems too long to be by fingernails....
As such, do I get Lexus to fix this? Can it be fixed? I can't find any breakage into the leather, but it's noticeable.
The gas tank on my 2003 LS was partly crushed at the dealership by a carelessly placed jack. Apparently, the raising point is close to the edge of the gas tank, and it is easy to overextend a lift arm so that the gas tank is damaged.
Replacing the gas tank involves removing the exhaust as well as the propeller shaft. It cannot be repaired. Leaving it as is can have serious consequences in the long run (corrosion, leaks).
Needless to say, I am furious. However, I would request all LS owners to take a look at their gas tanks just in front of the rear wheels, and take appropriate measures for repairing or avoiding any damage that may occur. (The impression I got from the dealer was that this may not be an unusual occurrence, since nobody expects as LS owner to look underneath their 65K cars.) I would appreciate it if people post their experiences here so I may know if this is a widespread issue, or was I just a rare victim of sloppy work.
vcheng, there is a 3-inch long, 1-inch deep dent in what I suspect may be the gas tank of my 2001 LS430. It is on the right side, beneath the middle on the rear door.
I scheduled for leather/warranty service at a local NY Lexus dealership next week. The leather specialist is an outside contractor.
I used a Mercedes (probably Meguiar's) leather protector on it, and it is rough and dry this morning. Probably too much silicone wax in that stuff, and the aniline soft leather got suck of its moisture. I'll need to get a conditioner for it. But upon further inspection of the seating surfaces. The front seats are much softer than the back seats. Feels a lot different running my palms on them. Perhaps Lexus has to treat the 2 front seats a little different since they are cool and heated seats while the back seats are not. Just my thought. Or perhaps they didn't treat the back the same as the fronts. A defect!
All in all, I still cannot write anything bad on my initial survey report; unless of course, Lexus does not pay for the fix, and fix it well.
Vcheng,
My gas tank on my 2001 Mercedes S500 was somewhat exposed as well. I noticed this when I had a flat at the shop. It had scratched marks and surface dents. So I guess stuff had hit it a few times. I ask at the time and a German Benz mechanic said it was ok.
Every time I open this page, or any other Edmunds.com page, I get this Stack Overflow message. Other people's sites are OK. Is this happening to anybody else?
It is a problem here and seems to be only happening to Internet Explorer.
It has been reported and I'm sure it will be fixed as soon as possible. Meanwhile you can avoid the annoyance by using another browser - e.g., I'm using Opera and it doesn't happen to me.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
For future reference, there is an "Our Software" discussion on the News & Views board that is a good place to report things like this; also "Ask the Town Hall Hosts" is located there as well. Several folks have reported this in the Ask the Hosts discussion. (But the hosts can't fix it!! )
Both back and front seat surfaces feel the same on my car(analine). I put some zano leather protector on once in a while and it seems to work, at least in my head. The other zano polishes are troublesome, but maybe they all are.
Go on a nice long trip tomorrow, only a few hours, and I swear no matter what type of car, after the first hour or so--boaring. It would probably be more fun if I wern`t on the interstate, but I do like to get the drive overwith.
The last trip, I ran across a radio station touting air ions and ozone. Do those gizmos really work?? Tony
After 5 days trying to set this baby up; I finally got through. (Scary to think it takes this long, guess I won't take that trip to Alaska after all ....) Only to discover I am missing another code to start it up...
iPod / iTrip update.
After a few more days listening. I cannot recommend it, as the quality of the ML CD and radio section has far superior audio performance. The distortion on the CD section is so darn low. So good !
Almost finished the trip, and then the car started to get hot inside. I turned the ac down abit, and things got warmer. I only had forty or so miles to go, but I began to smell a little electrical odor. I was at the base of the mountains , n. c. and hoped it was the big trucks over heating, but didn`t know. Seemed as though something wrong with the blower motor, and tried turning the ac off and then back on. Only a little air would blow through even when on high.Of course the boaring trip is now a matter of life and death(roasting) . I had my trusty cell phone, but when you need it it sometimes doesn`t work. Hotter and hotter it got, but now I am getting higher in elevation, so I tried the novel approach of cracking the window, and got immediate relief. Turned the ac off and got to smell the freshly mowed grass and other smells I normally miss. I got to thinking of all the problems other people have had with other brands, and how much trouble it is to have to take the car in for service. I also thought how fortunate I was that the car was still running. Drove into the yard, or driveway, and the ac seemed to start working a little better, but something still wrong. Turned the ignition off and will re-visit this tomorrow. Tony
Smart key and rear vanity mirrors are Mercedes S class touches. My baby loved the rear seat mirrors on the S500 and misses it now on the 2003. I missed the smaller smart keys. They are much more compact to fit in the pocket.
First happened to me in June of 1992 in my new 92 LS400 as I was climbing the continental divide heading west out of Helena MT. I turned the A/C off briefly and a few minutes later back on. Everything was then fine and no repeat. But then I haven't been the major driver of that car for about 8 years now.
Last month I purchased a used 92 LS400 with 150K miles in Tucson AZ. Had to have 6 ounces of freon installed before leaving Tucson for Fresno, Santa Cruz, and then home to Seattle.
A/C worked fine for the first two legs but then as we reached the mountainous area toward the Oregon border the A/C repeated the 92 MT episode.
I contacted Lexus once I got home and was told that it is not unusual for the A/C evaporator to freeze over and become completely blocked to airflow. She said it was not unusual and had something to do with the altitude and a hot day in which the A/C is working really hard.
The Tucson purchased Lexus has quite dark tinted windows so I am a bit surprised about this.
One anomally I have noticed with both cars is that after extended A/C use the suction line from the evaporator to the compressor will be coated with rime ice up to about 1/2" thick. I have been told that this is due to Lexus' (unique) use of an EPR (evaporator pressure regulator) valve downstream of the evaporator.
EPR valves are common to vehicles with more than one cooling zone requiring more than one evaporator, such as the Ford Aerostar and the Chrysler T&C.
For those iPod users among us wishing to connect an iPod to the stereo in the LS (and maintain sound quality), a glimmer of hope presented itself when Apple announced a deal with VW to give iPods to Beetle buyers and include a "connectivity pack."
Unfortunately, it looks like the "connectivity pack" is nothing more than a tape player attachment. Check out this screenshot from the promotional video on Apple's site.
I always count on you. You do have an unusual depth of knowledge.
After a little roof work, went to lunch, and the ac seemed to be working. I got into some yellow jackets, so I was a little unnerved, and expected them to come flying out of the exhaust vents. I have never had a problem with any of the lexus ac in the last ten years or so.. Always a first time. It was fairly hot around the high eighties, but it was very humid. Of course in s.c. it is easily in the high ninties and very humid most of the year, so this didn`t make any sense. In a couple of weeks I will make the return trip and we`l see what happens. Another question for you--` Why do you think they put the lexus link in the car, and then after a year start to charge you??` Seems like a short sighted way to treat customers.. I don`t know if I were to be in an accident if it would work in an emergency, seeing as I didn`t want to spend the two hundred or so dollars . Again thanks for your input.

Spliced the ignition source wire into B+ wire so Nav ECU "thinks" ig is always on. Still asks for "agree" with ig switched on.
