Heaven knows we do not have any of that ilk, that posts on this topic site! Oh yes I'm totally offended!
If VW made a lighter more metallic blue, sort of like the Nassau blue 2000 Corvette, I think I could see my way to it!
Geez, can you imagine getting the same (2009 VW Jetta TDI's ) % monies & cpmd on the 12 VW Touareg TDI's! ? When do you suppose another GW fleet of debit cards will be ready to be applied for!
I don't know what will be funnier, the indignation of the eco-weenie set/Prius cult who doesn't know the damage behind their own vehicles. or actual VW owners who will feign injury to attempt profit. I'd love to receive a note like that on my car, so I could get the dashcam footage and put the note-leaver on the web for all to see, have fun with that.
One comment sums it up:
"Dear God, people truly don’t understand just how insignificant in the scope of everything the VWs are. There are umpteen millions of skid steers, tractors, air compressors, really anything larger than a car running on a Diesel engine (which also have longer life spans than cars) with no exhaust cleaning whatsoever.
Not to diminish VWs cheat, but there are bigger fights to be had."
I'm feeiing all types/manners of left wing sensations, not even a minute after your post! Seriously there is no harm or foul unless CARB can FORCE CA affected TDI owners to implement whatever recalls.
My guess is the EPA/CARB will be as picky & as unreasonable as they can be, unless given "other" directions. If you read between the lines of some articles, it seems that they are already at serious loggerheads !
@ $2.39 ULSD, $1,000 buys 418 gal @ 40 mpg= 16,736 miles of commuting =1.12 years.
It might seem far-fetched, but they're predicting 39% take rate in 5 years from current 25% of the PVF?
"Studies conducted by the DUH, the University of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland, and the UK's Leeds University found that Opel's diesel Zafira, Corsa, and Vectra models emit more NOx than European regulations allow when tested in ways that go beyond the European testing protocol, such as when done on a four-wheel rolling road instead of a two-wheel rolling road."
"General Motors will move forward with diesel engines in cars and light trucks despite the potential chilling effect from Volkswagen’s emissions scandal, GM’s product chief said.
“We’re going to have a couple of really good ones, in both cars and trucks,” Mark Reuss said of the diesel offerings.
Reuss said GM won’t seek to build a diesel base as large as that of VW, which counts on diesel engines for about a quarter of its U.S. sales."
You know all the stuff about diesels are really a backdoor way of saying that they want to increase the prices for transportation per mile driven for gassers! It is already high! Yet demand is actually down!
Trust me, if all the hype was even closed to being true for gas , gas hybrids,EV, hydrogen, etc it would already have been done! So now you want to get rid of diesel, the one that has actually proven it can do the task?
News is trickling in, albeit slowly. Guess VW is in "meetings" with the agencies at the moment.
Biggest news so far is that the second (or third?) suspected software cheat on the six cylinder US models goes back to 2009, not just 2014 as the EPA first said. Well, that, and more spending cuts by VW.
VW has NOT agreed with that guess work by the EPA. I think it is a case of let's see if we can get VW to admit to more than just the 2.0L TDI cheating.
Volkswagen has denied that the software allows the cars to cheat on emissions tests. The two agencies plan to investigate.
If so where is my $1000 reward for buying the best SUV on the planet?
Yes! Seriously, why would (you, { chime in if I am wrong } ) & I (2 actual Touareg TDI owners) NOT want B/B offers for what we paid for them? IF so, what a real dummy I would have been! I should have then gotten 4, & put far more miles on each! The down side would be: WHAT could we buy after that?
But sadly, in case that fantasy comes true or ... NOT, bring on the $ 1,000 or MORE GW! So sad, that is only app 11,583 miles of driving (30 mpg @ $2.59) ! 27.58 SOS/DD round trips (420 miles) ( yes, I do play violin like RHEA Perlman)

Hey, I did say "suspected".
After waiting all day " Details of the remedy weren’t disclosed."
Maybe VW didn't admit the additional cheating, but Audi did:
"An Audi spokeswoman told Automotive News that the automaker acknowledged to the EPA and California Air Resources Board that it did not disclose how the V6 engines had software that, when tested, activated additional emissions controls. The software would active a “temperature conditioning” mode in testing that would limit NOx emissions to legal levels, the EPA said."
VW is an admitted cheater, and lied about their cheating. I don't understand the doubt.
Funny, the way I first heard it was that "VW" didn't intentionally hide that procedure and is arguing that the "warm-up" was permitted by the testing parameters.
"Audi said that the "temperature conditioning" mode is designed to reduce pollutants — not evade emissions testing — and should not be confused with the software gimmick for which VW has already apologized. The so-called AECD software reduces emissions in certain conditions, like ignition, when the engine is relatively cold, Audi said." (LA Times)
But then there's the stories out today like this:
"Today, VW finally came all the way clean: Not one VW or Audi sold in the United States from the 2009 to 2016 model years met US regulations."
"The technology at issue is software that adjusts the temperature of the exhaust system, Ward said. While a violation under U.S. law, the software complies with laws in Europe, she said.
Not all auxiliary emissions control devices violate U.S. pollution laws, but they must be flagged to regulators for further evaluation. If regulators conclude that the devices’ primary purpose is to evade emissions tests, they’re considered a defeat device in violation of the law."
“In California, those who breathe the dirtiest air are disproportionately in low-income communities of color,” wrote Sara Chandler of the Greenlining Institute in a blog post. “The only way to truly bring Volkswagen to justice is to help those communities get access to clean transportation and cleaner air.”
I had no idea that people in poor communities bought so many VW diesels? looks like every two bit non profit and ambulance chasing attorney is trying to get into VW's pocket.
texases says:VW is an admitted cheater, and lied about their cheating. I don't understand the doubt.

As for warming up a car to pass emissions. I found out the hard way in CA with our Mazda 626. You don't drive it a mile to the smog check and expect to pass emissions. At least 5-10 miles driving hard is needed to get a gasser to pass the CARB test. I now use a place 15 miles from home to make sure the vehicle is fully warmed up. Then they all pass with flying colors. Including my 2013 Touareg TDI. Like my smog guy told me. "The CA diesel test is a joke. It just looks to make sure the engine has no modifications and is not spewing black smoke. purely a money maker for the state.
The story I skimmed said the VWs were owned in LA and the Bay Area and the NOx blew inland.
So it was mixed with the NOx from all the ships in the harbors. But we don't mess with the shipping companies. They bring in the latest iPhone for all the Yuppies.
But then, how many car companies (2009 VW Jetta TDI) have/will : (aka, would you reasonably expect this from as GM/Toyota?) 1. over & above recalls, 2. fixes your issues (HPFP) out of warranty, 3. extends your transmission warranty out to 10 years/110, 000 miles, 4. sends you money ($1,000) after 100,000 miles/6 years of ownership, 5. offers $2,000 owner loyalty for a new car 6. Offers ZERO % loan, AFTER best deal, 7. sells diesels @ par to gassers? 8. IRS offered a tax credit
Right now, remediation can range from computer reflashing to $ 2.5 k retrofit (any recall/repair will slap a 7 year/70,000 mile warranty to the car) to vehicle buy back @ high blue book @ time of first news discovery? The fix might take up to 3 years later.
The car has been a total kick to drive! And, I am not even unhappy with the car, even after more than 110 k. miles!
When they get ready to give out the high BB on a new VW TDI, I would be right there getting a new one. I would imagine the 2016 TDIs will be cleared for sale by the time all this happens. They can take in the old ones sell you a new one, then if it is worth it fix and resell your trade-in. Or wholesale it in some 3rd world country.

You know, I am sure we both can understand the Chicken Little's perspective/s ! However, ...what's wrong with yours & my pictures! Geezzzzzz!
They just took the uncertainty out of the resale of both our VW Touareg TDI's !! Get offered more/less? Sell it!!! ??
Once I know the BB prices, cpmd: depreciation will be easy to calculate. I might even get a different color! & carry over ZERO % & down!!??
I know from my oldest 1994 Toyota Landcruiser, that app 11.6 to $.12 cents per mile driven: ownership/depreciation is the cost (250,000 miles) to beat ! Just a quick check indicates 10.7 cents for the 12 VW Touareg ! So yours is better! So any better than that is gravy!
I realize this is IS a biased opinion, but whoever gets our CUV's will be getting great vehicles!!! IF we are forced into it, it would appear to have a good ripple effect!
I will stick with white exterior and brown leather. I don't see anything with the 2016 Touareg to entice me. I would probably go for the lower level to get the 18 inch wheels and tires vs the 19s on my Lux. Though I like the seat adjustments the Lux offers. More than likely just keep it a few years.
I am about to dump XMSirius. They keep dropping the only channels we listen to. Christmas stations this year are lousy. And they took down the best Classical station. I have most of my wife's classical music on the hard drive so we really don't need the satellite service. XM road is good for another couple years. I don't find it all that accurate. It has re-routed us a few times when it was not needed.

If we indeed get the $1000 Goodwill package, for the VW Touareg TDI, CPMD: depreciation on the 12 MY @ 57,000 miles will be more like app 8.8 cents, rather than 10.7 cents.
It will be interesting to see what deals can it will be made going forward on the 2016, 2017, 2018 VW Touareg's? So I guess another high bar gets staked! What other OEM (competitor like model) can beat 8.8 cents per mile driven: depreciation/ownership?
It might be a no-brainer argument that because of the higher premium spent for the 3.0 L (over the 2.0 L) VW TDI package, the GW should be raised to $2,000 from $1000, as a minimum.
Real slow diesel news day! On fuelly.com, 12 Acura MDX, 12 VW Touareg, post about 17.5, 19.1 mpg. 12 VW Touareg TDI anecdotal 32/33 mpg is still (app 83 % to 73 %) better.
I helped my wife's colleague focus on getting a new CUV. The choice wound up being a loaded 15 Acura MDX. For a "non car" type, her colleague is deliriously happy after 1.5 mo & 2,000 miles! Ah... must be that intoxicating/addictive new car smell, aka, pony rides!
Since the majority of the US PVF is 12 years old (11.5 years,AVG) & on the avg each driver posts 12,000 to 15,000 miles, A scale able way to figure the diesel premium= DP/180,000 miles = cpmd: DP. So my last $ 236. DP/180,000= .0013111 cents, cpmd:DP. The resale value is app $ 2,000 MORE than like gasser or .011 cents !
My last diesel "discount" of -$ 500/ 180,000 miles = minus - .00278 cents.
One car engineer is quoted as saying “The car company is never entitled by Bosch to do something on their own.”
At least this company is well equipped to handle the dirty laundry.
Well, yeah ! Code is proprietary /copywrited, etc., !!!! I really hate to think I am/was one of the few who knew this from the get go!!? That was one reason why I took the very unpopular position@ the start!?
RB is NOT going to SHARE proprietary information, let alone let VW reprogram things!
Incidentally, RB is the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) supplier. Way off topic I love my RB dishwashers!
One of the reasons almost every auto OEM has a presence in Silicon Valley is to more seamlessly integrate hardware to software, some would say vice versa. . What can be more integral & or important than software for engine & emissions?
I mean really, all the articles (SEEM to) want to dumb down the issues & pert/gant charts down to a group of baristas from Starbucks doing this in their spare time. Or instead of talking wood shop, I took (cheater) software classes.
Speaking of dirty laundry, here is a Levis precursor of why diesel has far more reasons to stay around ! The analogy is on the "WONK" side, but is even more valid! It is tied into the fact that diesel can be MADE literally @ a customers site, rather than the huge & complicated world wide logistical systems now in place. Gasoline CAN NOT be MADE @ a customers site. http://www.wsj.com/articles/as-chinas-workforce-dwindles-the-world-scrambles-for-alternatives-1448293942?tesla=y
So for another example, getting rid of car transportation by "forcing" folks into cities is literally bankrupt, not sustainable, etc.
Yeah, it's just a cut above bunker oil - that's why it's so dirty eh? Pretty easy to plug an EV in at home.
As noted recently around here, it's okay to hack your car now. "Digital-rights activists have applauded the changes, which are scheduled to take effect next year. But environmental regulators and carmakers have warned that the decision opens a new front in a cat-and-mouse game with car lovers who soup up their engines — perhaps violating emissions standards." (NY Times)
Still won't be legal to roll coal, but the dealer won't be shutting you down when they spot the code changes when you take your car in for service. They'll just refuse to work on your car or void your warranty.
Even you know the first statement is misleading to a lie ! (Up to 25,000 ppm sulfur bunker oil, zero ppm is real for biodiesel, 15 ppm- nominally delivered@ 5 to 10 ppm sulfur. )
So for example, one of the most iconic cities, San Francisco, would find it IMPOSSBLE to go to a TOKEN 30% ( of a buildings energy supply mandated to come from on site) ! So to be clear, if a building uses 1000 kWh or more , 300 kWh or more has to come on site.
A practical reality check, a 30% mandate would take a minimum of 110 years ! Let's see, I will be 175 years old! So for EV, how/were would you plug in IF you didn't have rights or access to a building? ? Given how parking meters last, a week of function charging hook ups would be an eternity ! Can you imagine the precedence setting first electrocuting?
Lol! So how are we liking the skitzoid positions?
They can't even tell what code IS, let alone code changes NOW!!!! What is your point? Those that know/can are literally in the 1% knowledge base.
You remember my Conasauga River campfire story? Guess I haven't told it for a few years - went camping before a canoe trip and some good old boys were hanging out at the put-in campground turkey hunting. They were real hill people, logged 11 months out of the year and had never seen a Frisbee (this was around 1976ish).
After declining their invite to shoot craps on the ironing board in their pickup camper, I set about making a campfire. One of the gentlemen ambled over and helped me get it going by guggling most of a gallon of diesel fuel on the smoldering heap. The fire eventually started and it only took about 30 minutes for the sky to clear. I tossed my clothes the next week. Bunker oil would of made about the same effect.
They laughed at me so much when I swam the first rapid right at the campsite that I sort of wished I hadn't of given them my Frisbee.
"Volkswagen AG said it has approval to repair most of its rigged European diesel engines and made a deal with U.S. regulators to resubmit questionable software for review in 85,000 other vehicles, signs of progress in its effort to overcome the two-month-old emissions crisis."
Posted another ( tankful - shortly after low fuel lamp lit) 36 mpg in the 14 MB GLK 250 BT. Commute traffic is worse than ever. So even I am surprised @ this posting. So making lemonade of the traffic lemons, dropped, we did conference calls. (4 time zones) Ordering food would have been a bit over the top.
So I'm not sure if on the (like model gasser) MB GLK 350, that's I would even get 22 mpg.
Running around $1.83/$2.19 here. There's some cheaper, some higher.
This was a bummer - "Renault's flagship Espace minivan released toxic diesel emissions 25 times legal limits in a Swiss study despite complying with EU tests carried out at unrealistically low engine temperatures, a German green group said on Tuesday." (Reuters)
I'm not so enamored of them lately since they've morphed into SUVs, but back in the day I really wanted an Espace or one of those Opal vans with the little bitty tires.
Stever, you have weird taste in vehicles for sure. I think this would be for you.
Now it appears that Renault may be considering a return to the continent, using its Twizy low-speed electric car--and doing it via North America's largest French-speaking region.

I am interested in European EURO/AM, cars gas/diesel. However emphasizes on the "unattainable" can spice things up. The price of fuel is it interesting subject, it can be a metaphor for life: to ...how is the weather: to how about them WARRIORS! I am liking the low fuel prices. I wish they would drop even lower. I like the current ratios of gas to diesel, aka like model/competitor 22 mpg vs 36 mpg, even though diesel can be much more efficient! One thing that is clear to me & hopefully to others on this thread: is that for a whole bunch of reasons given the ratio of how oil is currently refined & has been true since the Rockefeller days is only way you can get rid of diesel is to kill gas. But then even if you do that, what part of our modern society does not use a product made from petroleum? Let alone the whole ripple effect!!!??
Slow diesel news day! The 2009 VW TDI Jetta posting 40 mpg! There is a discount of 1.5, 3, 5% depending on charge card used. @ $2.59 per gal minus - 3.89, 7.77, 12.95 cents per gal.
Funny, as there wasn't a diesel original Transporter. I don't think VW got into the diesel game until the 70s. I wonder how the emissions from the average barbecue or wood stove compare to a car...
Well, maybe not, what with all the fumes in that part of the world.
@stever I am assuming that photo was taken in Montreal. I was there last summer and took my brompton bicycle with me. Cobbles strengthen the bones, Steve. A beautiful city.

I am positive a BBQ puts out a lot more pollution than any car on the road. I went to a gas BBQ which is probably healthier. As healthy as eating a half pound of beef can be. Those stoves were a promotion from a British camper rental service.
For personal use the last two grills have been propane! Still have a smaller Weber kettle type (charcoal) going on 39 years old. We even have replaced the coal grates! The daughters got a pellet smoker and have the smoked meats down to a science.
Snow on the ground in Tahoe! They even have proper chain controls!
Have you been to Hamburg lately, Steve? I didn't notice any dirtier air in Germany - however, Hamburg being a major port might have more issues in places - due to the shipping industry that nobody will touch.
I wonder if that halfwit UN official with a lifetime in that wonderful accountable insightful sector mentioned earlier would be "delighted" if this tempest in a teapot can be corrected by a simple software flash.

So that is why a Peruvian is suing a German company? Why not China or India or the USA? Are the Germans a soft touch?
A Peruvian farmer is demanding that a German energy company pay him compensation for its role in causing historical climate change which, he claims, leaves his home “acutely threatened” by a glacial lake which could burst its banks.
In an unprecedented legal claim in Europe, Saul Luciano Lliuya demands that RWE pay part of the costs for urgent protective measures as his home lies in the floodpath of the Palcacocha lake which is damming glacial melt-water upstream of his home in the town of Huaraz, in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca, or white mountain range.
The Germans in particular and Europeans in general are a soft touch for do-gooder bleeding heart stuff, they've been brainwashed into it over the past 60 years or so and especially over the past generation - there are deep and long term motives behind it. Doesn't surprise me at all coming from there, or from a lawyer with a CV like that. So much false forced guilt.

It will be interesting to see what deals can it will be made going forward on the 2016, 2017, 2018 VW Touareg's? So I guess another high bar gets staked! What other OEM (competitor like model) can beat 8.8 cents per mile driven: depreciation/ownership?
Talking heads put nation wide avg RUG price @ $2.07. Avg ULSD, left off for obvious reasons.
Siri sez 2.28 RUG, 2.48 ULSD.
Remember the earlier denial? The EPA is trying to drag Bosch in. What did they know and when did they know it.
EPA Investigating Bosch over VW Diesel Cheater Software (caranddriver.com)
One car engineer is quoted as saying “The car company is never entitled by Bosch to do something on their own.”
At least this company is well equipped to handle the dirty laundry.
VW's Emissions Fixes Approved for 90% of Cars in Europe (Bloomberg)
So a good bit of progress is being made by VW.
Like I continue to say, I can't even make this stuff up! (above quote, from you linked article.)
Slow diesel news day ! Another $1.99 gasoline story that left off diesel!? https://www.yahoo.com/autos/gas-prices-plummet-hybrids-and-evs-feeling-the-181921719.html GA ULSD @ Valero @ $1.98!
My VW stock is moving upward. Should have bought more at $23.xx. As long as EPA/CARB do not try to get the country out of debt with enormous fines.
Fuel prices seem stuck in place. $2.39 cheapest CC diesel, $2.49 cheapest CC RUG.
Now it appears that Renault may be considering a return to the continent, using its Twizy low-speed electric car--and doing it via North America's largest French-speaking region.
Well, maybe not, what with all the fumes in that part of the world.

Still hoping for my $2000 goodwill package ! 12 VW T TDI! But now I am bummed ! http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/news/a27431/audi-says-it-has-a-software-fix-for-its-v6-diesels/
Guess I will have to get a Malone & DSG tunes after all this brouhaha! It would be nice to have 60 to 70# ft more torque! http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/videos/a27420/what-its-like-to-drive-a-modified-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/
Slow diesel news day! The 2009 VW TDI Jetta posting 40 mpg! There is a discount of 1.5, 3, 5% depending on charge card used. @ $2.59 per gal minus - 3.89, 7.77, 12.95 cents per gal.

And Montreal is very walkable when you park down by the piers.
Snow on the ground in Tahoe! They even have proper chain controls!
I wonder if that halfwit UN official with a lifetime in that wonderful accountable insightful sector mentioned earlier would be "delighted" if this tempest in a teapot can be corrected by a simple software flash.
