Here's a bit of a unicorn, asking for trade value for a buddy.

    2013 Acura TL w/Tech AWD ~65K miles
    6 speed manual
    White over black
    Good overall condition
    ZIP 44136 (OH)

May do better selling it to someone on Acurazine, people lust after prior gen TL's with a stick over there.

I don't have much data to go on, so I don't have full confidence in this number. $13k-$14k.

But I bet he could list it for $17,995 and get close to that for it

I'd say a typical asking price. Pretty low miles for an 8 year old car.

Even $17.5K would make him happy. I'm pretty sure he was expecting much less than what you list for trade offers, and he may very well get offered less, but that's at least a starting point. Thanks!

My father is looking to buy a 2016 Lexus RX 350 AWD Base model with roughly 22,000 miles. The color is gray. About an hour or so from Pittsburgh, PA. No haggle price is 36.998.

He is going to be trading in an 2010 Lexus RX 350 FWD with 115,000 on it. Gray inside in out. Base model. No options. Ok shape. Nothing special.

He has been looking for a while and has had trouble finding one. Maybe they haven't really come off lease yet.

    Thanks in advance.

The 2 in PA that match your description each sold for a bit over $35k at auction, so $37k is a great price as long as it has had no paintwork done.

Probably looking at about $9500 for his 2010.

I find many people that buy Lexus tend to hold on to them for a while. Therefore availability might not be as good for used ones as German counterparts.

Q:  this is for my SIL. in Memphis, TN.
Her 2004 Saab 900 convertible is probably totaled. It only had 30,000 miles.  It was in good condition before the accident.
Any idea of an insurance value?

I'm assuming it is a Saab 9-3 convertible. She probably won't be happy with the total payout. My guess is no more than 5-6k, if that.

Ouch. It is always painful when an otherwise good car, and with super low miles, ends up as a loss from which you really cannot be made whole.

Apparently about $2k was recently spent just on the top mechanisms.

That stinks. Hope she is okay.

I remember my dad having the same discussion about my mom's (mint) 1995 Volvo 960--"we'd buy something newer, but it's worth way more than its book value to us." And then it started having electrical gremlins, at which point, the trade-in value seemed generous. :p

When I was nosing around for a 9-3 convertible, that's about the range of asking prices I was seeing for nice ones---$3,500 to $5,500. Saw a lot of cripples, too. Big problem finding people to work on them, and parts are drying up.

I’m just going on what model my wife’s  BIL told me (not a car guy at all).
    So a 9-3?
    Anyway, a 2004 30k mile car isn’t worth  much.
My 2007 Miata only has 33k miles. I better
start to drive the H3LL out of it, cause saving it isn’t worth a whole lot.  But, the season is so short in Vermont.

So true, but I see 10 Saabs for every Saturn -OR- Olds I see on the road.

I noticed that CarMax seems to have banned Saab from its lots, even though the newest ones available otherwise still meet their age/mileage criteria.

My mom had trouble ordering an extra key for her 2003 (I think) Saab 9-3 only about a year after Saab shut down operations. There were a few local ex Saab dealers that switched brands after Saab's demise that happened to still have left over Saab parts still but that was years ago and even then it was a bit of a challenge. I can't imagine what it is like now to find Saab specific parts.

It depends on what you need of course. But my friends at Marin Volvo/Saab tell me it's getting tight.
  • 28firefighter28firefighter Member Posts: 9,819
From what my Saab people tell me up here, the mechanical bits are still readily available both new and used, but body parts especially on rare models (read: Viggen) and non-GM body styles are getting really tight. I've been watching for a clean front bumper for the Viggen and they're hard to come by. Same goes for the Viggen wheels.

Well "readily available" if you pay an arm and a leg, yeah. But competitive pricing? Not so much. I mean, you can buy parts for 50 year old cars, too, if you don't mind paying for them.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
I thought there was a company still manufacturing OE Saab parts. Did it close?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
No, there are still some companies selling parts. (more than I thought, actually!) You have to order them, though, and hope they have what you need. You need a window regulator for a 9-3 Arc, 2003? No problem. $931 please. Water Pump $155. Radiator $340.

Not so bad I suppose. I guess a BMW wouldn't cost much less.

I guess what I'm alluding to is really "down time".
  • 28firefighter28firefighter Member Posts: 9,819
I've found the parts costs aren't unreasonable - again, for the mechanical bits. The body pieces are really becoming troublesome.

True of any old car, really. Those trim bits are the first thing the factories stop making--it just isn't worth doing such short runs.
  • pensfan83pensfan83 Member Posts: 2,767
I found that out as well in my search for a few interior trim pieces. I've done a pivot to searching ads for people who are parting out their cars.

My 2015 Lexus ES 350's lease buyout price is $21000. The car has 25K miles on it. Is it a good choice to buy the car at this price?
  • henrynhenryn Member Posts: 4,289
To get an accurate idea of the value of your car, you need to provide:

location, as in Boston or Chicago or Kansas City or ...

    Color, exterior and interior

Any important or major optional upgrades (sport package or premium package or ...)

Any noteworthy problems (needs new tires)

Any bad things that would show up on a carfax, such as wrecks

    Mileage: 25K
    Location: San Fransisco
    Exterior Color: Pearl White
    Interior Color: Beige

Has minor scratches on the rear bumper and may need some paint work.

They really nailed the residual on that. Pretty much dead on auction value. So, yes, that is a good buy for you. No equity as a trade but worth about $23k as a private party sale.

I'll let @qbrozen do his thing here, although I suspect he may not have any auction data to go on. I doubt there are very many 13 year old Lexus SUVs passing though the auctions.

In the real world, most new car dealers are not really going to want your trade in. This would probably be something that you should sell yourself.

I'm really interested in this - 2011 BMW 328i Sedan w/ manual transmission. 55k miles. Current asking price is $11800 from dealer. KBB trade-in price is about $6500. Is there any bargaining room with the dealer? I'm just worried i'll be dropping over $6k just driving the car out of the lot!

Sounds interesting. KBB is a bit low on this one. Not sure I've ever typed that before. I'd hit it at $7500. $10.5k should buy it.

KBB can be "out to lunch" now and again, on either end of the stick. I've seen some of their low values and I know that the car can't be bought for what they say.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Just because KBB is $6.5 that may not necessarily mean that's what the dealer paid for it. Let's say they had to stretch the trade value to make the deal and paid $7k or $7.5k, and they maybe spent $1k -$2k on on recon, now they could be in it for $8k-$9.5k. So asking $11.5K is not unreasonable.

Manual transmission sedans are a tougher sell so you might be able to bargain a bit on it, especially if it's been sitting on the lot for a couple months already.

    That goes without saying.

UCM to the seller of said 6-Speed - “I’m sorry.  The most we can offer you is $X under book value.  The stick REALLY hurts you.  Nobody wants them anymore.”
