    Happy birthday! :)

I can always start talking about that "green car" again and how it compares to the Protege :)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I'm off to work. I'll check from there and post a few. Unless we get some help, we won't get to 10.000 today. We've got 168 to go.

Tinting sunroof: Shouldn't it be already tinted? Most cars that have one either have the mesh or a light tint. Is this on ALL P5s and all sedans? I don't have a sunroof so I don't know.

Please don't. We're pretty familiar with them:

Paul had one (99), I had one(93), Jim had 6 Accords, so we know.

seems to be a bit lighter than in some of the other cars I've had. Even my Accord was black over black leather and it didn't get nearly as hot inside as the Protege.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I never had one of those "green" cars. I had a 1999 Protege DX before the 2001 ES. I hever had one of those "H" cars. They drive too boring for me, I never liked them.

Actually, I drove one before I bought the DX. I drove it on a 99-degree day and the car was black. I was literally sick to my stomach when I came back from the test drive. So that was it, I didn't get it. On the same drive, I had to turn down the AC in the Protege though. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
All sunroofs come non-tinted in the Protege for some reason. I don't get it, I thought they would tint them too. But the sunroof in my 2001 ES was not tinted until I had it done at the tint shop.
  • zoomzoom79zoomzoom79 Member Posts: 272
Why'd you have to ruin all my fun??? Jerk :)

On a serious note I have the opportunity to buy a 96 Civic EX sedan with 107k for $4500. Will probably buy it, clean it up, and then sell it. Will probably park the Protege until it sells to keep the miles down a little on it. Our 93 Civic already has 141k so the miles really don't matter on it.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Why do those H cars sell for so much money? $4500 seems like alot of money for a car with over 100K on it. I think so anyway, I don't care what kind it is.
  • zoomzoom79zoomzoom79 Member Posts: 272
how do you wash your cars when it's that cold outside. I gladly paid the $13.95 yesterday for somebody else to wash it and dry it.
  • zoomzoom79zoomzoom79 Member Posts: 272
Autotrader and stuff. That's a bargain. That car has a retail value of close to $8000. I know that we would sell one in top shape on the lot for $8998-$9998.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I drive it 80% of the time. My mom 20% or less. My cousin drove it for 2 days when he had his road test as he wanted to take it on an auto, so I drove his 5spd Z24. Plenty of power (150hp), but didn't feel solid in the corners and it does have some rattles, and a better stereo than the PROs. Other than the Mazda people, no one. Unlike Dale, I don't like lending it to anyone, but would lend it to my cousin if necessary.

I thought you said you had a 99 Civic DX, then the 99 PRO, then the 2000/2001 PRO... Sorry

They're nice (H cars), but overpriced. NEXT!

I JUST got to work and had to mow thru a ton of posts!!! Yikes!

As for letting others drive my car, no way. I barely let my g/f drive it. I let my friend who was buying an Impreza wagon drive it so he could get used to driving stick again. In that case I was in the car helping him out.

The only reason I'm paranoid is because I'm not sure who would be liable if another person drove my car and got into an accident. No way I'm paying for somebody else's mistake!!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My dealer washes mine when I take it in for service (either warranty or routine). So I just take it to the dealer for its scheduled maintenance, and they wash the outside and clean the inside pretty well. If I don't do that, I take it to the $10 car wash and have someone else wash the car for me. I always have done that, because I live in the city and there's really nowhere to park to detail my car.
  • zoomzoom79zoomzoom79 Member Posts: 272
who gets to drive my car. And of course whoever works on it when I get the oil changed and tires rotated.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I told you before, if someone is driving your car and hits something, you are liable for property damage and bodily injury claims. They will go after your insurance if it's a bad enough accident (I know this because a good friend of mine works at Geico insurance). No way I am taking that chance!
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Thanks....I thought you'd said something about that before. So there you go...no chances!
Also, for example, what if you lend your car out and buddy runs over a curb. He/she doesn't think anything is broken, but a month or so down the road you find out that a cv joint is now broken. What a great treat that would be!!
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Happy Birthday Larry!!!!!! I hope you aren't hearing anymore voices in your head like last night... ;)
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
you guys are making me reconsider this whole lending-the-car thing...

But I probably won't change my stance...it's not in my nature to say n.....

    ...to be disagreeable ;)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You have enough drama with your Protege on your own (between the coke and the car wash), right? :) You don't need anymore. Think about it that way. :)
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
For those of you who won't let anyone else drive your car. Do you ever drive anyone else's car? I sure hope not, that wouldn't be right. So the way I see it, you're missing out on the opportunity to drive all types of cars. Thats whats fun to me. If everyone I knew wouldn't let anyone drive their car I would have never driven a Porsche 911, Acura NSX, BMW 7 Series, Chevy Chevette, Yugo, etc.....
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
IF I knew anybody with those cars, then I would probably let them drive my car all day long. They would (hopefully) know how to take care of a car considering their car would be worth like 5 of mine (at least!).

However, if I knew that the person treated his/her cars like crap, then I probably still wouldn't let them drive mine.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My friends let me drive their cars sometimes, but they are always with me. There was one or two cases that I drove their cars alone. But I have the newest and most expensive car among my friends too. I have the Jetta, one has a 1997 Sentra with 105K that's beat down, and the other has a 1994 Cougar with 58K that's worn a little. Like PF said, if I had friends who had cool cars, they could drive mine all day long. But they are not taking my car if they are not leaving something with greater or equal value. :)
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I hate lending my cars out and I love to be driving whenever I go somewhere. The nice part is that my current arrangement does not allow me to share my vehicles. "Sorry, you aren't covered by my policy."
  • shriqueshrique Member Posts: 338
My baby goes to no-one! I've let one person drive it and it drove me nuts. That and I'm so paranoid about insurance and such.....well I'm just paranoid to begin with but thats beside the point.

    Shrique
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
So let me get this straight. You don't want to take the chance on anything happening to your cars, insurance and the like. But, if your friends had cool cars you would expect them to take the chance of letting you drive it?
I find this stuff pretty amusing. I want to drive your car, but you can't drive mine, unless of course your car is more expensive than mine, then if you hurt my car I'll just keep yours.
I just can't be that way with possessions, I like to borrow things from other people, so in good conscience I have to let people borrow from me.

So...Dale, don't let them sway you. If we're ever in the same city, we'll switch cars for a few days!!!!!!
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Interesting about sharing cars: I've driven a 911S, 328GTSI and Z3. All were reciprocal agreements, so I guess I break the rules on occasion.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Malt: you are a control freak :)

Paul: the way I look at it, virtually everyone I know has been driving WAAAAAAY longer than me...and given my track record, what could they possibly do to my car that hasn't been done to it already? :)

Raymond: Thanks for your generous offer, but you may wish to reconsider after reading my above comment to Paul :)

More help for Larry's Bday, 10k post hopes. Happy Birthday Larry... I won't *even* ask about the Love Train title... :-)

Reqcon: No one drives my car, period. Loaned it to my dad once and he did $9k in damage to it. The dw is free w/the MPV's keys... she should sell em...

Malt, get to work or I'll call your boss!

Hey now. I personally take the stance that no-one else drives my car. that there is my personal choice. If I ask my friend to drive his car and he says no, I respect that. It's his decision. Everyone knows that my cars are off limits.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
    RX7 twin turbo, LT1 Z28 automatic, LS1 TransAm WS-6 ram-air 6sp, Porsche 968, Contour SVT, numereous Mustangs, and a 300+ hp Eclipse GSX.

The TransAm was brutally fast and the RX7 was sex on wheels. Bikes are another story....
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
I never did get the email you mentioned. I can't believe what you went through to chat. I just couldn't make it back in last night.
And I don't care how long you've been driving, I'd still let you take my car. You just have to stay away from McDonalds and the car wash.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I don't like other people driving my car really. I have driven theirs, but that's their perogative. I used to let them drive my car before I got the Jetta and before I found out I would be responsible for property damage and stuff like that if they crashed my car.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
    Isn't that a little dangerous newcar? ;)

    Cars I've driven:
    '91 Mazda MPV
    '91 Jetta GL
    Some mid-90's Mustang (automatic....it licked)
    '01 Pro LX (my car)
    '02 Subaru Impreza TS

Not even close to your list Newcar :(
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Those aren't the ONLY cars I've driven. They are the only ones worth mentioning IMO.
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
I'm jealous of that RX7, thats one I'd have loved to drive. But thats a pretty good list... Starting to sound like a good off topic discussion to take to the other place.... cars we've driven, love or hate.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
This is a pretty long list, but here goes:

1995 Explorer Eddie Bauer (co. car at the time)
1995 mercury Tracer (my other co. car)
1996 Olds Cutlass Ciera (another co. car)

  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
I didn't think it was....I was only pointing out that I've driven crap compared to your small list of exotics.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I forgot the BMW 850. I drove one of those when I worked at the Ford Dealer. Some guy traded it in on an Expedition. Yuck! It helps when you've had friends that have sold cars and have worked at a dealership. I drove the RX7 and 968 back to back at Morries Mazda. I could have drove a 3 series the same day, but I didn't have time.

This is a quote from the article linked in the above post:

"Hyundai's percentage gain in the U.S. last year was the largest among automakers. The company now ranks eighth in U.S. sales, after moving past Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. during 2001."

I personally didn't know Mazda was in the Top 10 in U.S. auto sales; did you guys? (Shaddup Maltb)

I used to own a Protege. Great car. Traded it in with low miles. That was stupid. Wish I had one now. Only concern is Resale value compared to others in class. I now look at total cost of ownership. Good luck to all Protege owners.

I'll let my friends drive my cars, because they're my friends and I trust them. Usually I'm with them anyway. I think a lot of the coverage issue depends on your coverage and the ins. company itself. So that being said, can I drive your Jetta at MAP III Paul? Actually, I'll settle for a ride. I also want to ride in a 1.8L ES and see the supposed smoothness and free reving engine compared the 2.0. Meade, when can I come down to Richmond? :-) Oh, yeah, Happy Birthday Larry!

I've got a great pic of Larry from MAPPI posted on the home page of the Yahoo! group, if you've ever wondered what he looks like.

(Granted, the pic is a year and a half old, and I hear he's now 135 pounds and wearing speedos at the beach)
