I am one of the many who discovered poor visibility from the driver's seat on my Grand Cherokee Limited.

Does anyone know if the driver's seat can be lowered further than the seat adjustment? Any pointers would be appreciated before I take the seat off the rails and try to figure it out on my own.

    Thanks.

After about 30,000 miles, my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee began to develop a shaking when the brakes were applied. I had the front rotors serviced once then a year later the problem resurfaced. I was told by my dealer that the rotors would need to be replaced, which was done in January of this year. 5 months and about 4000 miles later, the problem resurfaced again. Again I was told there was a problem with the rotors and they would need to be serviced (at a cost of about $140).

I've read in a couple of places that the Grand Cherokee rotors are a problem and often fail after about 20,000 miles. But it doesn't seem logical to me that there should be a problem again after replacing the rotors less than 4000 miles ago.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any suggestions for how to deal with this?

BTW - I am not going to have that dealer service the rotors, but am going to take it to another dealer for a second opinion.

If you paid the dealer to replace the rotors I would expect them to 'warranty' the new ones for more than 5000 miles. Factory disclaimer ('00 GCL) in the warranty book was coverage for 12,000 miles. Ask nicely if they stand behind their work. Take it up as high as you can at the dealership to get them to assist you with the problem or lose you as a customer.

If that fails, go to one of your local parts places or mechanics if you don't work on your own vehicles and get replaced with aftermarket rotors. I did that at AZone for less than $100 on the '00 and they were fine when I traded it 50,000 miles later.

Yep, you are just another person who has found out that the brakes that Jeep fit to their Grand Cherokees' are crap! Replaced stock rotors with aftermarket slotted rotors of the same size and even they warp and cause brake pedal pulsing. The car is too big and too heavy to have such small rotors that obviously get way too hot. Jeep should consider taking some lessons from the Japanese manufacturers and install some quality brakes to their vehicles.

well you see i cant rev it up. well i can. it is very hard to explain. Even if i do rev it up for the second it stays running, it just dead STOPS. There is no slowing the engine down to have it die...it dies while i have the foot planted in the gas. also, if i keep the ignition turned while this whole shebang is going on, as soon as it quits the starter kicks in immedialtely. OMG it makes no sense. Like i said before, i wonder if this could be a computer problem.

    Hi,

I have a 2005 JGC V6 Laredo. I bought it this past January and it now has only 4300 miles on it. It has spent more than a month in the shop and has had major transmission work done. I still don't think the transmission is working correctly but the dealerships claims its fine. They are actually going to let me take a demo vehicle for a week so I can compare.

I also only get 7-9 mpg city, about 12mpg if I am on back roads. I will not buy another Jeep. Very dissapointing because we had good luck with my mom's 95 JGC which now has 183k miles.

I heard Jeep might be doing a 30 day money back guarantee on cars. Had that been the case when I bought, I wouldn't be driving one now. It's been a real pain.

    Regards,
    Greg

What would make the emission light to stay on? I took the gas cap off and put back on and changed type of gas.

I'm having a similar issue on my 2001 JGC. One of the turn signals bulbs on one side - but not the other turn signal bulb on the same side - is out. When I put a volt meter to the wires, it shows 12 volts. But when I connect a bulb to the wires, it does not illuminate. This is driving me crazy! Anyone have a suggestion? :confuse:
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Not to be flippant, but is the bulb good? (I'm sure you examined it but it's always a good idea to check the obvious.)

I need to replace the front whell bearings ina 1989 Cherokee Limited. It comes as a Hub Assembly Unit from most places, but the shop describes a procedure (with special tools) to rebuild it. Has anyone tried to take the hub assembly apart and replace the bearings and seals in the assembly, rather than replacing the entire assembly.

    Thanks.
  • milehi4x4milehi4x4 Member Posts: 2
That's what's frustrating. I connected the assembly to a 9V battery and it lit right up! I've cleaned the connector contacts and checked for continuity.

Here's some additional information: when I connect one wire to the bulb and the other side of the bulb to a ground, it lights up but it does not blink when the turn signal is on.

I have a 99JGC 4.0 W/114k miles. I had my share of the problems mentioned but I concider myself lucky. I guess I just take the problems as they show up. And guess what, I still LUV my JEEp. Anyway, my current brake problem goes a little something like this: All lights work fine including brakelites, untill I turn on my headlight switch. With switch on (any position other than off), when I press the brake pedal, the brake lights( and rear lights go off), the liftgate center light works as advertised. Release the the pedal and the rear lights come back on. If I turn off the headlite sw. everything works fine. I got some ideas but could sure use some help. thanks
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
That is odd! I am guessing you also tried swapping the two bulbs?

You're experiencing what 100's of thousands of JGC owners experienced. The problem centers around the the circuitry of the lights, not the assembly itself. It has been my experience that it is far cheaper to purchase a good set off of E-bay rather than go to the dealer as they run 150 a pop. The circuits on the WJ models go hay-wire after a while, resulting in replacement. The lights either won't operate at all(my problem both times) or won't operate with lights on or are very dim.

In my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee the check engine light flashes on and off when the key is in the on position, before the car is started. Can somebody please help and tell me what this could mean? Before it stayed on when it does the light test, now it flashes. It does not come on while driving only when the key is turned to the on position. I Really Need Help! Thank You

I have a 2001 JGC and the radiator fan does not come on when temp comes up. Disconnected fan, wired direct to battery and it runs so it is good. So I am thinking it is the fan relay
or temp sensor. I found the temp sensor but can not find the fan relay. Any Ideas where it might be or if I missed anything that will help me with this problem. Let me know thanks.

Does anyone know where is the drain line for a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee air condition?
  • jeepladyjeeplady Member Posts: 2
I had a stalling problem with my 95 grand cherokee, the tach would go nuts and the car would just turn off going 10 mph or 60 mph, usually started right back up, a few times I had to wait a few minutes. After going through and testing everything I could think of, I dropped it off at the dealer, and they actually got it to act up for them. It turned out to be the camshaft crank position sensor. Had it replaced a year ago. No problems since! (so far) Hope this helps.

I have an 1987 jeep cherokee chief, the problem is if it gets too hot 200 (which seems low) it just dies. I am in the middle of replacing the thermostat, water pump, mabe the relays and fans, the problem is I can not find the engine coolant drain, so you know paid less than 500.00 for the jeep 175,000 miles looks like everything original. Also other suggestions on problem appreciated. Not given up on the jeep
    thanks its a in-line 6 and 4wd

I've got a 95 JGC, The power windows, locks ect stopped working. After checking the circuit breaker, then pulling out the door switches finding no problems there... I started pulling on the wires while pushing on the switches, the windows would start to go up. The problem was the jumper harness that goes into the driver door. The wires became brittle and some of them had broken from opening the door so many times. I called the dealer, they wanted the VIN number because there are quite a few choices for this year & model. Came back with a 318.00 price on that 1 foot piece of mangled wire... I pulled mine out & took it to the salvage yard, got one for 40 bucks. Put it in, works so far. Anyone else have that problem?
  • jagnutsjagnuts Member Posts: 1
This is a VERY common problem. Yes a test will show the individual light works but the resistance becomes too high which causes lighting system problems

There is a 5 minute free fix. The problem is the plastic connector stretches a bit and that results in POOR electrical contact with the bulb. You can fix it by putting a little piece of folded paper under the contact to get it to firmly contact the bulb. Google it and you'll see other creative ways of getting better contact. ;)

You don't have to drain the block.

Before you start throwing parts at this Jeep, tell us: Are you overheating AT SPEED (highway) only, or will it also overheat at idle?
  • xscoutxscout Member Posts: 141
This is a problem I am familiar with. It is located inside the "frame" rail coming through the firewall on the passenger side. Forget about getting to it from under the hood. Looking under the dash on the passenger side inside the Jeep you will see a round plastic piece just above the floor carpet. This is the drain. Drill a small hole right in the center of it and you will be able to clear it with a wire straight through to the outside. then just buy a small plug or cork to fit the hole size you drilled and you will always have easy access.

ok this jeep is giving me nothing but problems. this started about 2 weeks ago it has been hard to start and under a load ( in drive) it bogs and back fires under the hood not out the tail pipe. it goes fine up to 30 after that it sputs out and slows down. i have to kick it in over drive to slowly speed up or baby it. i have changed the cap rotor plugs and wires. i also have a noise when i turn left but when i turn right its smooth.i hope you can help

After a lot of work, my son-in-law discovered the solution to the spinning dials problem. We fixed it for $6.54. The battery cable ends looked fine, but were corroded inside. We replaced them, and the problem was fixed. Now I just have to try fixing the cd player, the door locks, automatic windows, and possessed tail lights. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello, didn't see any mention of this yet. I got a class-action lawsuit notice in the mail yesterday concerning the warped rotors on JGCs. I'm not a C-A lawsuit fan in general, but I will likely participate in this one.

I had to have my mine turned twice on the original pads. Once at under 10,000 miles and once past 36,000. When the dealer told me that it was "normal" because the Jeep was a heavy vehicle and put a heavy load on the brakes, my first thought was, "No, the brakes are inadequate." A JGC weighs the same as a big Caddy. It's not that heavy as far as SUVs/pickup trucks go.

    Anyone else get this notice?

    Are you going to participate?

I bought an '06 GC Jeep with 7600 miles a month ago and I have a vibration which you can feel in the steering wheel at 68MPH and over.
  • stormchaser6stormchaser6 Member Posts: 2
4 wheel quad track cherokee.....the fuel pump was replaced last year...problem is back again...
no problem at all under 60 mph however between 60-70 mph motor seems to misfire or just skip badly...until I reach 70 and above problem goes away....on either side of those numbered speeds no problem..no error lights at all and no check engine lights...please advise
  • jdejeephemijdejeephemi Member Posts: 33
tell me more about your jeep. is it the 5.7L? if so when you are on the highway driving at or above 60mph up to 85mph and look at the passenger seat. if it wobbles from side to side let me know. this is a huge problem the Grand is having. when you have a chance drive your grand and tell me at what speed it wobbles most or where else you may feel the problem. the passenger seat must be empty. :lemon:

I find this very interesting because I just posted a message about this last week. I've had my JGC less than 5 years, have 36K miles on it, and have had the brakes in 4 times for "adjustment." My dealer has admitted that the brake design is "faulty" but says he can't do anything about it.

My next step is to call jeep directly. Maybe this law suit will give me some leverage when I call. But if not, does anyone have info about how to participate? (I haven't received anything.)
  • gordo36gordo36 Member Posts: 9
I do have the 5.7L in this vehicle and I will test it again tomorrow with no one in the passenger seat. I know the steering wheel shakes, not real bad, but I know it's not right. I also have a high pitch whistle when I accelerate over 40 MPH.
  • gordo36gordo36 Member Posts: 9
I drove my 06 5.7L JGC on Rt 80 this AM with the front passenger seat empty and I could see the seat shake and felt the vibration in the steering wheel at 67 MPH and above. I can't say the seat was shaking side to side, just a steady vibration. I also have a high pitch sound when accelerating.

I will make an appointment next week with a dealer and see what they say.

ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO I PURCHASED A 05 GRAND CHEROKEE 4X4 AND EVER SENCE I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT I BEEN HAVING TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER, FIRST THE AIR CONDITIONER STOPED WORKING ON THE WAY HOME FROM BUYING IT, THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENTIRE SHIFTER HAD TO BE REPLACED, THEN THE VENT FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER BROKE, THE STEERING WHEEL CLICKS WHEN YOU CUT THE WHEEL, AFTER THAT I WAS ON A TRIP AND WHILE DRIVING UP A HILL THE JEEP ACTED LIKE IT WOULDN'T MAKE IT UP IT ACTED LIKE IT WAS MISSING AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BAD GAS BUT ALL I USE IS SHELL V-POWER. JUST YESTERDAY I GOT IN MY JEEP AND THE ENTIRE FLOORBOARD WAS WET IT HAD LIKE 2 INCHES OF WATER IN IT, I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT SMELLED KIND OF WEARD . SO BACK TO THE DEALER I GO, THE JEEP IS VERY SHARP AND RIDES SMOOTH, THATS ALL I CAN SAY, VERY UNHAPPY  . WILL BE TRADING FOR A TOYOTA. :lemon:

Tire pressure is good. Had the tires balanced and rotated. I believe the problem is either the pinion gear, driveshafts, transfer case, or all of these things.
  • jdejeephemijdejeephemi Member Posts: 33
As i have said before this is a problem JEEP will have to address. my 05 has been in and out of the shop for 10 months and they still have no solution. Upon my last visit with the dealership i did have two tires that were "out of round". after i did change the tires, on my dollar, i noticed a big difference but i am not by any means thinking that fixed the problem. After a few weeks of driving if the vibration comes back i will have it in again and this time the dealership said they would keep my jeep and give me a loaner until the problem was resolved. GORDO36 do you have a contact and a number of the dealership you have been bring your jeep to? i am organizing a list of complaints from around the states and if push comes to shove i will address this issue with the corporation. so the more problem i have with vibrations, the better. let me know if you have the numbers and contact info. thanks
  • gordo36gordo36 Member Posts: 9
I have been to only one dealer so far, but I will make an appointment this week with another dealer and, then I will give you the contact information on both.

I have a pretty pronounced whirring/whining sound that seems to be coming from the front differential. This occurs anytime the wheels are in motion. The sound is pretty loud, and a dealership mechanic told me (over the phone) my front end is probably going out but it's been suggested that I clean out the diff and put new fluid in and that could solve my problem. Anyone have suggestions or comments on this?

    Thanks, Mark

    PS, I have a 97 JGC Laredo w/Quadra-Tec 4X4

I'm having the same problem with my headlights. The dealer has changed the headlight switch and the dimmer switch in the steering column. Total of $500 and the problem is still there. They are just guessing I think. Another place told me it is probably the timer control module so I'm going to check on that.

Hi, my fiance just called and said that we just received a letter in the mail about this C-A Lawsuit. I have a 1999 JGCL and have had my rotors turned once about 10000-15000 miles ago, it has 86000 miles on it now, it had 49000 miles on it when we bought it so I don't know what problems it had before. Just recently my Jeep started vibrating again and my fiance was blaming me, he said it must be the way I drive, now he knows it's not just me. The Jeep is in his name so it would be up to him if we participate in the lawsuit. My main concern is to just get it fixed I drive with my small children in the car and I would like to have a car with dependable brakes. I also had a major electrical problem with the tail and brake lights that I did get fixed, but I was wondering if anybody has had any trouble like that too.
  • podedwardspodedwards Member Posts: 35
If you have not had your tires rotated & balanced every 5,000 miles then they have probably worn in a scalloped out pattern. There is nothing to do. If this is the problem, it's not a Jeep problen, it is a Goodyear service problem-been through before. I have learned with past Goodyear tires to rotate and balance every 5K and keep the records. Goodyear may help if you have done so and have records to prove it.

The vibration yuou describe is consistant with this wear pattern.

Permenent all wheel drive cars do make some noise at highway speed. But, check to see if your air-filter cover is securely fastened. Sucking air in around an incorrectly closed seal can make the sound you are describing.
  • gordo36gordo36 Member Posts: 9
I bought this JGC used with 7600 miles on it and had the tires rotated and balanced at 7700 mi when I felt the vibration, it now has 8200 mi. I just checked the air cleaner cover per your suggestion and the cover is on tight. I'm taking it to a different dealer on Friday, so I'll see what they say.

The first dealer I took it to last week never even drove it, but insisted that he did. I wrote down the mileage when I dropped it off and it was the same when I picked it up.

Hi, I recently purchased a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 V6. I love this truck. But when day when i was driving home all of a sudden at 55mph the car just died. I restarted it and it ran fine and never did it again. The car has 5,000 miles on it. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

My 05 V8 does the same thing, it's really annoying and the dealer can't reproduce the problem therefore they won't fix it.

we bought our 2000 gc at about 60,000km's and have no idea of brakes//roters had been done. at about 105,000km's (one year later) we noticed the pulsating in teh brakes while braking around 80km/hr. we had new napa rotors (not jeep parts) that were cross drilled installed with ceramic brake pads. cost us about $1000 in total. we also replaced the tires at that time. we now have 130,000 km's on the truck and have had no problems with the braking. my advise, replace with quality parts, it'll cost ya more, but you might just not have to replace them every 5000kms.
    good luck all!

My 2005 Jeep GC started with the vibration problems not long after purchase in 4/05. I went through about 7 rental cars and weeks without my vehicle, until the transmission finally went and had to be completely replaced. Chrysler was no help with any of my problems. Since transmission replacement in 3/06 it has been ok, still hesitating slightly at times until this past weekend when I woke up to a puddle of transmission fluid in my garage. Took back to dealer again for them to replace "o" rings and add T-fluid. I have just about had it with mine.

I received the same letter, I have a 2003 JGC with 37,000 miles on it, if you have 36000 miles or less than 3 years from the date of original purchase they will replace your rotors and calipers under the warranty. if not you are out of luck and have to pay for the repairs out of pocket, they did send a certificate for a free brake inspection. I only have 37,000 miles on my jeep I wonder should I try and talk to someone to get them to pay for the brake job. I thought the pulsing from the brakes was just the way the car braked. If any one can help or get me a contact number please reply.
