Since the former HR guy was "deeply involved" it sounds like a scheme where he received other compensation (perhaps not in the form of cash) that was not shown on statements of earnings. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Apparently the police surprised him upon arrival back in Japan at the airport so he had no idea this was coming. Otherwise I suspect he might not have returned and instead took refuge elsewhere.

Like I say, I don't trust car companies, or the people running them.

@graphicguy - ugh - so sorry to hear about your refrigerator troubles.

My wife and I are in the process of opening up a franchise, and we'll need to create two complete kitchens (2 fridges, 2 electric ranges and 1 dishwasher) for the space. I know we'll be price sensitive, but I also think that it will be a good investment to pick up a comprehensive service plan, as well.

Regarding energy costs, I've been averaging about $125/mo, combined, for our electricity and natural gas. Summer has been more expensive, due to the AC running, but we'll see what the bills look like in the dead of winter when we run the natural gas furnace more.

The house is equipped with solar, so I have to pay the service company a fee every month, as well. Still, cheaper than our last house.

Michaell....excuse my ignorance but a few questions please........
What kind of franchise.....Chic A Fil?
Will comprehensive service plan cover commercial use?
If you have solar don't you produce your own electricity? What is the service charge for?
Not chick fil a; we don't have the net worth for that.
Not sure what you mean with your second question.
Yes, we produce most of our own electricity with the solar; but, we lease the system, not own it outright, hence the monthly charge.

I have a handy dandy app on my phone that shows how much energy I'm producing every 15 minutes for a day
Chic Fil A only requires $10000 down if you are approved. Only difference is you don't own it in the end.
You mentioned buying a franchise and needing appliances...not sure what kind of franchise.
Sometimes if you buy appliances for commercial use the regular warranty or extended warranty won't be honored. For example our Keurig coffee maker I believe says the warranty is good only if used in the home.
I get it now with solar....didn't realize you leased the system.
We are looking to open a kids cooking studio.
    .
Good for you and good luck with the new business.

Best Buy acts like they’ve never heard of me even though I spent $4K with them last year and am what they call an “Elite Plus” customer.

LG acts like Alfred E Neumann....”What, me worry”?

IN brief, LG has no local service center or agents. They don’t know when they can get one, or even if they can get one to come to my home. Best Buy feels customer service is something they will not provide unless you pay them extra for their “GEEK SQUAD” extended warranty.

Understand, this unit is still under full parts an labor warranty.

As I mentioned, the issue with LG was not that it broke - this happens to any brand, although the statistics say it happens to LG more often than others. It's the horrendous lack of support in case you need them. No parts, in your case even no service. It's sad, their stuff is really pretty and clever, but with this kind of customer treatment, they lost me for next 10 years.
So, boys and girls, the moral of the story is.....before you buy any appliance be sure to see how good their dealer repair network is....that is more important than the actual appliance.

We rented from a company that can provide refrigerator delivered in hours.
Put it in garage. They will place it in kitchen if you want instead of bad refrig.

I had to pay month in advance. Nonrefundable. They had a 40$/week Maytag French door stainless
on the floor 32 inch. Later they had a smaller freezer on top in white at $28/week.

The one I used was Rent a Center.

Thanks @imidazol97 ! I may end up going that route.

I'm doing battle with both BB and LG. I'm stuck in a finger pointing Merry-Go-Round.

The answer is simple. If you can't fix it, replace it. I could have a fridge here this afternoon if I were to go into BB and buy another one. But, try to get one fixed they already sold me?

I get this from both LG and BB....

Mike - At least a liver slowly grows back again, sans tumors. That always boggles my mind - that you can have a live donor for liver transplants. They grow back like starfish.

Meanwhile, if you need an assistant, a young strapping by then 68-year-old, I'm free after January 10th (my birthday) and February 12th (my wife's birthday)...

Man, I hate winter. John Cleese said the only item on his bucket list is to never be cold again. Turned down a Lordship to keep that. My kind of guy.

RB - are there any BMWs left, other than Ms, that are still BMWs and not just status symbols? I could not get over what an ordinary drive that X drive was. It came in handy when we were at 10,000 feet and it was snowing in Colorado but that's the extent of it. Well, a bit of a stretch in Utah, too. Pleasant enough, but my wife's Mazda 6 is plenty pleasant enough and drives nicer than the 320 X drive.

On the other hand, driving cross country on someone else's dime is definitely OK. We had a ball.

All depends on the energy source. For all it’s negatives, nuclear power is pretty cheap, at least on the front end. I think hydro is cheap too.

Washington has the best of both worlds: IIRC, all of their electricity is nuclear and hydro, save for the various wind and solar projects sprouting up.

Interior Alaska is almost entirely diesel and coal... and we don't even get the coal power cheaply!

Fun fact: My university just finished building the only coal plant constructed in the US since 2015. It should be coming online any day now.

    Amen, Bro.

And that's true for cars more than some want to admit. If you don't have a good dealer to troubleshoot and diagnose, or to suggest preventative maintenance, then your experience will be much worse.

I had a Buick dealer that was great. They even loaned me a tool to replace the overhead cam belt myself. But that dealer was obliterated by the political rearrangement of GM.

My current Chevy dealer is great. Very professional. I wouldn't trust the two closer [nonpermissible content deleted] and the [nonpermissible content deleted] foreign stores. I'd buy a used Buick or Chevy (or a Cadillac).

I think that may folks bought into the image that LG and Samsung appliances were the $#@#$ and the *#*@!%@ of appliances and would never fail--indeed like the cars,

My son has had trouble with his Samsung Galaxy S6 (battery and power control cutting in and out) and with Galaxy S7 (cutting off and on). So he's buying another Galaxy S9. Slow learner? Actually the S6 battery problem and S7 problems seem to be known. Would I buy a Samsung appliance after his phone problems?

The S7 problems are fixable. I'm going to inherit it.

Michael, sounds very exciting going into a new business. Luckily your wife and daughter know how to make it work. Glad to hear the proper insurance is in order also. "Just be there" is the best advice anyone can give you at this point other than to say "good luck"! Very exciting though.
On my side, am seriously considering stopping altogether, I'm so tired all the time and just want to do nothing for awhile. These past few days have just shown me that this is where I want to be going forward. No more getting up before six am and going to work. I'm mentally just ready to finally stop and want to relocate. If that means going at it alone, so be it. I no longer want or feel I need my wife's approval to live the rest of my life the way I want to. No way will I or can I work another full year to be honest, my body just is so tired from the constant chronic pain! I've had enough!!

Are you close to Barrow Alaska xwesx?
Residents of America's northernmost town, Utqiaġvik, Alaska – formerly known as Barrow – will watch the sun dip below the horizon for the final time in 2018 Sunday afternoon, marking the beginning of "polar night," 65 consecutive days of near-darkness in this city north of the Arctic Circle.

On Friday the high will be -8 and the low -13F.

OK guys, stop complaining about the snow and cold.

And another thing, why did they change the name from Barrow to something no one can pronounce (Utqiaġvik)?

Time to quit Sandy. No one gives you a reward at the end and says you are a good boy for continuing to work when you don't feel like doing it any more. If you could look back at the end you will probably say I am glad I took the time to do some of the things I have always wanted to do, even if it is doing nothing.

I wouldn't go back to work because I would be the worlds worst employee. I have no motivation to work. I have done it, it's a rat race out there....I just want to be able to say I played loads of tennis and pickleball, and I don't regret it one bit.

Options are also a big factor. We had a couple of 320i manuals with the Track handling Package on the lot. They were really fun- and a mild tune helped as well.

So sorry to hear about your issue GG and with ours being 31 years old, just a matter of time for us to. The few times it's gone down, it was a real PIA but luckily we didn't lose that much, only the long term condiments like mayo and ketchup as we go a few times during the week and usually have fresh stuff. When I work, I don't plan on dinner but when the kid moved back, I had to, so I did. My wife doesn't, she usually picks up for herself, so don't worry about her on that issue. She likes me to take her out on a weekend night if possible, but lately, the places have been mediocre at best. And once January kicks in, she'll be working both weekend nights. This year it'll be a split schedule like 10 to 2 and then 7 till midnight or something along those lines. Not quite sure and not one I'd ever do but, she's excited about it all.
The kids new GE side by side is great. Stainless steel and water, ice cubes/crushed in the door plus cold water also. So nice to have a working refrigerator again to be honest. Wouldn't be the biggest crime in the world if ours "went out" at home but November has been a costly month for me, very costly, so not wanting to add a new appliance onto the list. Gifting the kid what I did is something I wanted to do, something she definitely appreciates, I know as she keeps saying "thank you" and there are still a few things she needs so off to the Dollar Tree tomorrow to fill in some blanks. Figure for a new house, she should get new. When she was renting, figured whatever we had extra would work just fine. But now that it's all hers and brand new, want her to have the whole "new" experience", so trying to make that happen. And besides a couple more small things, she basically done now. Some other bigger things and accessories will come with time, when she finds the right matching things, things of quality that will last awhile. Best she save her coins and dollars now and see how things go. Then buy but spend wisely! Best to spend a little more in the beginning so it'll last longer in the end and be what you want. Buying just to buy is foolish behavior but buying quality things that last, now that's a smarter option as far as I'm concerned. But as for, I'm about done here!

Close is relative in Alaska! I would say that I live relatively close. However, that's still 400+ miles distant, and there is no road connection. I am at about 63-degrees north, so we get light throughout the winter, but it is highly punctuated this time of year. I would say it starts getting light at about 0900, and it is dark again by 1600. In another month, at solstice, we'll have about four hours of light (albeit quite dim).

A warm day here, though. It was 23 degrees when I was outside an hour ago.

As for the name change, "Barrow" was the name given to the location by some missionary some time ago, while the other is an Aleut name used well prior, and the people want their location to represent their culture and home. I think most Alaskans are supportive of such a change, even if the name is not kind to our tongues! :)

Wow, I just can't wrap my mind around that "polar night" concept one bit. Being that cold is also something I just can not imagine. But creatures adapt so am assuming humans have adapted to all this and live a normal life...for them! Personally, I like light at the right times, during the day but at night, I want it dark enough to be able to sleep, and 8 hours or so would be nice. Think our internal clocks need the change from day to night also to function at their best but, that's all I've ever been used to.

I don't really notice the daylight thing too much. It is usually most noticeable to me in the late winter (February and March), when the light is getting strong enough that we feel heat from it again. Also, during the summer, I find that I might be out until 11pm or later working on things and have no idea that it is so late.

Went out to the car Saturday morning to go get coffee and minor click when I turned the key was all she had to give. I'd left the key in the ignition turn to ON but no blower or anything on. I was checking the brake lights to see which of the 3 bulbs was out. Didn't realize I left the key inside.

I connected my 2/6 amp battery charger and set it on 2 amp. Several hours later, good to go. I took the Malibu for coffee.

Thanks guys for letting me vent.

Both BB and LG were supposed to get back to me this afternoon. That never happened.

I called one of the LG "Customer Service Representatives" just now and told them I was going to unload the fridge at the nearest BB if they need to service it. Obviously, I am not planning on doing that (maybe?). But, the rep thought I was serious.

Here was her response (pretty close to the wording).....

"Mr GG before you do that, please hold while I get (a name that I can't pronounce let alone spell) on the line. After 15 minutest, the original lady comes on and asks a few questions.

One was...."how can we improve your experience with LG?" I debated......she's innocent....should I let her off the hook? Nah!

"M'am, you can begin by delivering me a new refrigerator tomorrow so I can at least have a quasi decent Thanksgiving prepared for my family."

She then replied, aside from that, is there anything else....."Give me my money back and I'll leave this hunk of worthless stainless in my driveway for you to pickup".

    "Is there anything else?"

I finally laughed at the ludicrousness of the conversation and hung up.

GG, The young lady was probably in India and had no idea what you were talking about.
There should be some kind of advocate you can call. How do they honor a warranty if they don't have a repair network? This is very aggravating......I would be looking into consumer advocates, see if there are others online, see what other people have done.

I will say one thing, at least it sounds like you got a person reasonably quickly, with VIZIO and cable companies they let the phone ring until you have to give up.

Another thing I heard is customer service reps these days are paid bonuses if they get rid of you or can be fired if they don't stonewall you and if it is a loss it goes on their record. So they hang up or pass you onto someone else.

Almost everyone here has had a similar experience, and it is just wrong.

Not every accident on a bike results in a fatality, most don't. You tube is full of motorcycle accidents where the biker walked away. And there is protection on a bike if you want it. There are crash helmets, armored gloves, jackets and pants with armored plates. There are even some bikes with airbags.

Factor out the riders with no license or training, impaired riders, riders who don't believe in ATGATT, and riders exceeding their limits- then you see it's not as dangerous as many surmise.
Age group with the highest accident/fatality rate among motorcyclists is ages 40-59. Or if you lumped them into ages 40-49 and then 50 & over, those two groups have about the same number of accidents and/or fatalities.

So it's not really the young 'uns. I suspect part of the reason is the degradation of muscle strength and reflexes as riders age.

Then at Walmart this evening a Durango didn't even stop and make a left turn into the Walmart. I was trying to exit. There had been cars at all 4 directions which followed the state law. She just rolled on through daring enyone to hit her.

GG, The young lady was probably in India and had no idea what you were talking about.
There should be some kind of advocate you can call. How do they honor a warranty if they don't have a repair network? This is very aggravating......

My "great LG experience representative" from the time of the run-around, sounded like an actual native Korean. The one who called me about the refund, sounded much more closer to home. The address was in Tennessee.

It's really unbelievable that a major company can sell durable goods with no ability (or intention) of making good on its basic promise.

Not all of them are like that. I had Philips sending me a new cleaner for their top of the line shaver twice over the course of around a year. It wasn't great that the contraption didn't work, but Philips totally owned up to it and gave me a new one after going with a short checkup protocol. I had Keurig sending me a new coffee maker after I called about one I had making short cups (I think seals or valves gave in too early). I described the issue, confirmed the basic protocol of descaling and cleaning. The item was out of warranty by at least a couple of months, so I wanted a repair shop address (it was "Platinum", which is $150+, too much for just one year) but they still sent me a new one, including a coupon for some free coffee that comes standard with a a new registration.

LG on the other hand, happily "registered" my purchase, but it apparently was like "taking the reservation" from Seinfeld. When I called them, they acted like they never had any info on my account, so I had to repeat everything. I'm sure the purpose of the "registration" was so they could send me their promotional junk email, which they did of course, more than twice a week.

I have a handy dandy app on my phone that shows how much energy I'm producing every 15 minutes for a day
I thought you were kidding. Way to go, you capitalist you. :)

Driver100 has a point. Most consumer goods warranties are void if you use the item for commercial purposes. Depending on what you need you can go to bankruptcy auctions (the majority of restaurants go belly up) or equipment supply houses where you can often get used equipment cheaper.

Blockbuster news: Carlos Ghosn out at Nissan, and arrested by Japanese authorities:

    http://www.autonews.com/article/20181119/COPY01/311199981/ghosn-will-be-arrested-in-japan-on-suspected-financial-law-breach

TOKYO – Nissan Motor Co. is preparing to fire Chairman Carlos Ghosn for allegedly under-reporting his income and using corporate assets for personal use, a company spokesman said.

CEO Hiroto Saikawa, 65, will recommend to the automaker’s board of directors that Ghosn be dismissed, Nissan spokesman Nicholas Maxfield said Monday in Japan.

The company is also planning to fire fellow board member Greg Kelly, 62, who rose through the executive ranks as a director of human resources.

Ghosn is believed by Nissan to have under-reported his income over multiple years and misused corporate assets. Kelly was “deeply involved” in the scheme, Maxfield said.

While Nissan did not immediately comment on the magnitude of the alleged income under-reporting, the Jiji news agency said Ghosn under-reported nearly 10 billion yen ($88.7 million) in compensation as nearly 5 billion yen. The Kyodo news agency said it took place over five years, from 2011 to the present.

Media reports said Japanese prosecutors arrested Ghosn for alleged violations of the country’s financial laws. Ghosn voluntarily went with Tokyo prosecutors, the Asahi newspaper reported.

    Fall from grace

Ghosn, 64, one of Japan’s highest-paid executives, is joint chairman of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and one of the industry’s most storied leaders.

This marks a stunning fall from grace for the man who pioneered Nissan’s comeback and has been credited for leading one of the auto industry’s few successful automotive partnerships, the long-running tie-up between Nissan and France’s Renault.

Ghosn expanded the alliance to include Mitsubishi Motors Corp. in 2016, by engineering Nissan’s purchase of a controlling stake in the smaller Japanese rival. Mitsubishi had no immediate comment on its plan of action following the news, a spokesman said.

Nissan did not say who would replace Ghosn as chairman nor when the board of directors would decide to remove him.

Nissan was expected to hold a news conference about the allegations later Monday at its global headquarters in Yokohama, just south of Tokyo.

That’s pretty much of a knucklehead move for someone in that position.

The only LG appliance I have ever owned is my current microwave oven.  Bought it last year for $139 - 1500 watts.  The only thing I don’t like about it is that it is very noisy.  But it cooks evenly and the results of heating leftovers are quite good.  But after hearing the experiences on the forum here, I doubt I would buy a large LG appliance.

I’ve been very lucky with Whirlpool.

Oh my. I know that feeling from our Whirlpool's losing the blower motor/circuit board.

I suggest A-Z Appliances, which has done our servicing. They are Cincinnati, Dayton, Springfield area company. They may not be LG authorized, but it sounds like no one else for LG is in area!
    https://atoz1.com/

So the fridge showed temp of 37 deg but was warm? Strange that temperatures would be wrong. I'd suspect a compressor out. But the erroneous temp reading might indicate a computer went bad and isn't controlling things and isn't updating the readings.

Frankly, I'd trust my Whirlpool, Maytag, Kitchenaid brands because at least I have authorized service folks who will get next day appointments if possible for diagnosis.

I know A-Z does other brands because the guys have commented about trouble getting parts.

I don't know what your level of frustration is on this deal. But I told my wife if I'd know I was going to have trouble getting a slow order part, we would just have bought a replacement refrigerator instead of thinking ours would be fixed. \If they make an equivalent style to the design for the handles on the microwave, double over stove, wishwasher, we could have had it installed the next day. Costly, but DONE. Would have been easier than buying a Walmart dorm fridge and then having to readjust for long term wait for part. BUT Lowes Warranty got the part problem FIXED.

Two years and more on the warranty from Lowes of the 5-year warranty.

The problem today is so many various parts on Whirlpools and various products, that trucks done carry most often replaced parts so they can replace them THAT day on the first visit. It's always order in or what my service techs prefer is order at Dayton Appliance Parts (large regional company) and have it at the store the next morning for pickup--if DAP doesn't already have that part in stock.

Just spitballing here but we had a similar problem once. Turned out to be a blocked fan. Little tiny 4” gizmo that blew air across the coils. That was enough for the fridge to become hot to the touch and stop cooling. Once the air was flowing we haven’t had a problem since.

    The Sandman/Driving Fool :)B)

Sandy, have you considered asking for a leave of absence from Hertz? Up here we have a bunch of transporter “snowbirds” who take off to Florida every year and have their jobs waiting when they return.

Might give you the break you need to recuperate or to decide to pull the plug totally. I work with a number of guys with bad backs and I can tell from the look on their faces when the pain is starting to get to them. I try to be considerate by giving them the comfortable seat or holding doors open. Little things.

During my farming career I seldom went without some joint or limb injured or strained so I know it can wear you down. Fortunately, my type of farm had significant winter down time so I had a respite to recover, at least mentally. Maybe that would work for you too.

Just in case?  You mean to throw the microwave out in?  I look at small appliances like this - if it costs less than $200 and breaks down after 2-3 years, I am not about to aggravate myself with the warranty department or the repair department.  You have to call them to get a return receipt or repair ticket.  You pay for shipping it to the facility and wait for weeks to find out if the warranty will cover repairs.

I would just prefer throwing the darn thing out and replace it with anything but the brand that failed.  At least I have a new microwave to cook and heat up things.  Not worth the stress to me.

I reached a milestone today when it comes to new cars - I have now had this S450 for 1 year and 1 week - the longest I have kept a car in almost 25 years - and i’m Not done yet!  Honestly, if there was anyway I could keep this car for the rest of my life (driving life that is), i would sign on the dotted line now!

This is, without any doubt, the best car I have ever had.  The car has been back to the dealership only once since I got it 53 weeks ago - for it’s first A Service which turned out to be complimentary.  Not one repair or fault with this car.  Magnificent!  :oB);)

Well, we had a couple of evenings with temps in the 60’s, but we’re back into the mid 70’s at night and mid to upper 80’s during the day.  At least it was nice for those few days.  Running the AC 24/7 once again.  But I prefer this to snow and temps in the 20’s and 30’s.  Couple of more weeks and we’ll be cool in the evenings and comfortable during the daytime.

First, never underestimate the power of a Chick-fil-a sandwich to make people go crazy.

Secondly, I agree that traffic at Walmart is nuts. At the store I use they have several 3 way stop intersection near the entrance. I assume this is to prevent cars backing up and blocking the main public highway by allowing cars entering the right of way.

The trouble is that the knuckleheads don’t acknowledge the 3 way stop and are always darting out from their stop sign into the entering cars thinking they have a stop sign too. I nearly broadsided a soccer mom with her kid just last week as she did a rolling stop.

It will only get worse as the season progresses.

Thanks, @imidazol97 ! I called both of them, yesterday a.m.

Talked to them both. One said it needed a new compressor. But, parts availability has been scketchy. Even then, he said he’s backed up until mid Decenber, at the earliest. The other didn’t return my phone call.

I think I’ll be getting their attention shortly. I charged it on my Visa to get an additional year of warranty. On a lark, I called their customer service people to see if they could help. They said they wouldn’t have any other access to service companies than I have.

But, they went ahead and put a “contested charge” for the entire purchase price. Someone, somewhere will notice that.

The downside, looks like I’m not hosting Thanksgiving (U.S.) for my sisters, nephews and my son, which I was supposed to do. Doesn’t look like this will be resolved anytime soon, either.
