As long as it is completely thawed and you don’t overfill the oil you should be good.

Im paranoid so I’d fill the fryer will water and dunk the turkey so I knew exactly how much oil to put.

Dont forget take the giblets out and rest it 20 minutes or so (just tent it with foil) before carving so the juices redistribute.

A thermometer in the oil wouldn’t be a bad thing to make sure the temp stays consistent through the process.

the best turkey I ever had was one that was deep fried. The wife would never go for it though.

My wife went to Wegman's at lunch. She said it was a total zoo. Gridlock in the aisles!

We really only go there once a year.  7am on December 23rd.  By 8:30 when we are out of there it is pure bedlam !!

They really have the best seafood and variety of cheeses and meats for our anti pasta platters we do.

I made a huge mistake of buying the Prime rib at our local ShopRite last year.   The butcher cut exactly what I wanted but I wasn’t happy with it.  The cuts I’ve gotten from Wegmans were just better quality.  It’s not worth saving 10-15 bucks for something you make so infrequently.

Rastellis up in Marlton has really good meat. We go there usually when we want something special. A lot less crowded too.

I’m going to the in-laws so all I have to do is eat. My wife is bringing a homemade Pecan pie. Last week she did a test run and I ate so much I think I was in a sugar coma. :p

we host thanksgiving. A bit of stress and expense (mostly the wife gets stressed, for no real reason). But nice to not have to do long distance driving for at least 1 holiday.

I’m cheating a bit. We are using a Waring countertop fryer. Uses 2.5 gallons of oil and rotisserie’s the turkey through it.

I have done the outdoor thing before and took the exact same prep steps as you, @tjc78

We have a local restaurant cook the turkey for us. My wife and my sister in law provide the salads, sides, and deserts. We only have 8 people in all.

    Sounds delicious!

My Italian wedding soup is simmering on the stove now! My mom is making baked ziti tomorrow and then the 21 LB turkey goes in the morning of.

Way to much food.  My wife takes a step back from this holiday but does our big Christmas Eve open house/ 7 fish dinner

I cook Christmas Day since it’s her birthday.  Usually I get a prime rib from Wegmans.

Christmas Eve sounds similar to how it's done in Poland. Multi course dinner with no meat. Fish, bigos (cabbage dish), pergies, home made mushroom soup, pickled herrings, traditional vegetaqble potato salad etc. In Poland Christmas Eve is more important than Christmas Day. We open our presents on Christmas Eve too.

Beef stew in the crock pot tomorrow and leftovers on Thursday.

Have you ever installed a dishwasher? I don't mean a brand new install, just replacing an existing one? It is pretty straight forward. We're talking maybe 20 minutes. Actually easier than replacing the faucets on the sink.

Oh, don't bank on it! The last one I did had a different inlet valve. No idea how or why, but I wound up having to pull parts off my old dishwasher and creating a hybrid connection. It was the strangest damned thing.

Yep!  There are two main types, and naturally your replacement doesn’t have the same one.

Also... granite/stone countertops can make it a pain to get it secured.  You can’t screw into the bottom of the countertop like with wooden tops.  Mine is no fun to get back in securely just right.  I believe the countertop guys have a clip they can epoxy in now, but didn’t when I had my tops done 7 years ago.

Newer dishwashers have side clips to screw into the cabinets. Much easier than gluing a wood strip to the countertop.

That’s what I have, still not as easy as the old way. Mine is also a pain, because the left side is just an end panel and if you go too far you could go right thorough it with the screw.

Oh yeah. Forgot about that part. I relocated the tabs to the sides of the DW and screwed them into the cabinets.

EDIT: and I just read the rest of the thread to see others have mentioned this. IIRC, the last one I did had slots on the top and sides of the machine to choose where you inserted the tabs.

I am always amazed how pricey used Jeep Wranglers can be. I was thinking about what RB could get for his in a private sale and came up with a comparable in my area:

Now consider that my same year Chrysler convertible with similar mileage sold for $10k less.

Looks like good ‘ole GG is taking everyone out for Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow. Going to a local place (maybe @kyfdx knows it) called The Grand Finale (https://grandfinale.info). Not complaining, as I have way too much to be thankful for. It will be my son, my older Sister and her Husband, my yougest sister, two nephews, one niece, two grand nieces and me.

Thanks LG. You cost me my Thanksgiving food that was spoiled and forced me to go out to eat on what has been a traditionally family gathering at my home.

Not heard much good about the LG fridges (should have checked before I bought). Frankly, their warranties aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. They have ghosted me. I haven’t heard a peep out of them since I requested warranty work. No time frame.....no talk of having someone....ANYONE.....who is willing to fix it. A big fat NOTHING!

Not 100 % sure, but I do have faith that VISA will apply a credit for the contested charge on it.

So, did a bit of research and went looking for a replacement last night. Stay away from Samsung, and of course, LG. That leaves the usual suspects like GE, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Frigidaire. From what I can gather, the latter 3 are all made by Whirlpool and the GE is still made down in KY, even though they are now owned by Haier. Saw a Whirlpool I liked.

Not working today so probably hit up the local stores as well as Lowes and Home Depot.

    Anyone have opinions about Whirlpool?

I believe Frigidaire is an Electrolux-owned company, does not have ties with Whirlpool. It's Maytag that is another Whirlpool-owned brand.

I have a Whirlpool fridge, french door with bottom freezer in form of a drawer. It works well, keeps the climate really well, but it has one serious design flaw, IMHO (at least my model) - the fridge door itself has this little tab that seals it, but it's too rigid, so it requires a positive force to be applied, not just typical self-closing momentum other refrigerator doors do. You won't believe how many times I discovered a cracked open door after several hours. Food would not be spoiled, but there would be frost forming around the pump vents. It's trully annoying. A warning buzzer would fix that problem, but my fridge doesn't have it.

Another issue was a freezer water evacuation tube (for defrosting feature) had a grommit (nipple) made of a rubber that aged quickly, which in turn would block the tube and resulted in water spilling to the bottom of the freezer. Whirlpool redesigned that grommit piece and evacuation tube with a durable plastic and was even provided some replacement support for those owners who asked early enough. I did it on my own anyway (it was cheap and relatively easy to do). I believe currently sold machines are fine, as I don't think they would insist on that flaw if they fixed it on the existing machines. I also have the icemaker tray feeder (in the freezer, not door) occasionally clogging with the ice (then it spills water on the bottom of the freezer). I know now how to deal with it and since I use very little ice, it doesn't bother me. It may actually be a very reason for the clogging, as the icemaker is not being exercised often enough, so residual water may be freezing in the feeder.

So sorry GG. I have both LG (stove and microwave) and Samsung (fridge) appliances (as well as Kenmore and Bosch) so I am very interested in your story. So far I’ve been very happy with all but the Kenmore washer and dryer. Looks like it may be the same story as with car dealerships — it’s not just the sale but the service after. A lesson for us all. Here’s what one large independent store had to say at the end of a review:

“Now you know the most reliable brands. However, if you buy a whole kitchen, there is a good chance you will still need service. Bosch, Thermador, and Whirlpool's brands (Jenn-Air, KithenAid, and Maytag) have the best tech support and part availability.
Samsung, and especially LG, have bad reviews all over the internet because they do not have the infrastructure to support their growth. The product works. Their logistics need to be beefed up.”

This same review noted that the reliability rate for even the best brands was lower in the higher end lines of their products. So Whirlpool has a higher reliability rating because they sell less complicated appliances. Their higher end lines have about the same reliability rate as the others.

It seems LG's reliability statistics are a bit worse than average, but if they actually had enough parts in store and had proper service contracts everywhere they sell them, they would have been OK. It's never great to experience premature breakdown, but when you see what can only be described as abject indifference, it becomes one-time deal for you. It doesn't seem like they really care at this moment. They see growth in sales, so they think everything is great, it's only when things fall of the cliff, they will look closer. They have to run out of "one-time customers" and their families/friends, they may start paying attention, which will take some time.

Funny, one of the 3rd party LG techs I had originally called last week finally got back to me just now. They can’t even come out until mid-end of December for LG fridges. He said the compressors are known issues with recent LG fridges (the ones with the 10 year warranties). Pretty knowledgeable guy....said LG is aware of the issue and can’t get enough compressors to cover the ones that have gone bad.

He was honest and said LG isn’t really on top of the fridge issues and he’s swamped with just LG repairs (he repairs all of them).

He also said there’s a class action law suit against LG for the issue. Interesting.

I do hereby retract my statement about installing the dishwasher yourself. :o

I have done my own installs a couple of times, and it was very easy, but apparently my experience is far from universal, so I will count my blessings and move forward.

The dishwasher was pretty much the only appliance that was left in my house when I bought it as a HUD foreclosure. It has a leaking front seal, which I have never bothered to fix. I just use it for storing my pots and pans, which I almost never use. Can opener and microwave, that's the ticket!

Thanks for the info on the other brands.

Also, Amana appliances are now owned by Whirlpool. They got it when they bought Maytag, who in turn got it from Goodman/Daikin, who bought Amana in the '90s. Daikin kept the Amana name for heating and cooling products and sold off the appliance division. My experience seeing Amana appliances these days in stores is that they are a low-end brand. Unfortunate, as I remember when Amana was a prestige brand.

It is what it is. It’s Thanksgiving. At least for the next day or two, I ain’t sweating it.

I remember when Amana was a big deal. Mom was excited to get her Amana RadarRange when we moved to Knoxville in '78. That thing was heavy, all metal and glass and expensive! She used it for 15+ years! Also had an Amana side by side that also lasted 15+ years without any repairs.

    Anyone have opinions about Whirlpool?

We have a Whirpool fridge in Florida, 12 years old and still working. I am not crazy about the brand, but, I would replace it with another one. The condenser is pretty well the whole fridge, and I think they have learned how to make them. Fairly simple is probably best....less electronics. And, according to Whirlpool, they are made in the U.S.

In the U.S., Whirlpool has nine manufacturing facilities: Amana, Iowa; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Tennessee; Clyde, Ohio; Findlay, Ohio; Greenville, Ohio; Marion, Ohio; Ottawa, Ohio; and Fall River, Massachusetts.

In this 2015 survey, these were the best made American refrigerators:

    GE Profile PWE23KMDES, $2,600
    Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q], $1,600
    Conventional bottom-freezers

    Whirlpool WRB322DMBM, $1,400
    Whirlpool Gold GB2FHDXW[Q], $1,200
    Amana ABB2224WE, $1,350
    Maytag MBF2258XE, $1,100
    Amana ABB2224BRM, $1,250
    Maytag MBF1958XE, $1,150

IMHO, they are all probably good, and the price of these models is not too high.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to all. We celebrate twice a year, TG in Canada was early October, then we go to a pot luck with our U.S. friends tomorrow. I like having two Thanksgivings!

So yesterday my son(who lives in Charlotte, NC) sends us a selfie of him with Mookie Betts! Turns out my son was walking home from work and saw Mookie on the street corner and struck up a conversation. Mookie was in Charlotte on business and was going to catch the Celtics-Hornets game while he was there.

That's neat! I think I heard that later that night he (Betts) spent some time with Michael Jordan. Probably not as memorable for him, though. :)
    Here's the evidence...
Nice! He can always say that he got to Betts before MJ did. :)

I’m cheating a bit. We are using a Waring countertop fryer. Uses 2.5 gallons of oil and rotisserie’s the turkey through it.

I have done the outdoor thing before and took the exact same prep steps as you, @tjc78

We raised a turkey last year - she was nearly 35# after being dressed out! Too big for the oven, so I pulled out the fryer (outside!). It technically fit, though definitely too large for the stock pot. I just bit the bullet and dropped it in... after a long while slopping oil over the sides, it was eventually cooked to perfection. One of the advantages of a gravel driveway, I suppose.

    That bird was sooooo tasty!

I am always amazed how pricey used Jeep Wranglers can be. I was thinking about what RB could get for his in a private sale and came up with a comparable in my area:

Now consider that my same year Chrysler convertible with similar mileage sold for $10k less.

Nice looking Jeep, but what on Earth are they thinking with that spare tire?!

Not working today so probably hit up the local stores as well as Lowes and Home Depot.

    Anyone have opinions about Whirlpool?

And, every one of them aside from GE are made by Whirlpool. Overall, a great brand in my experience.

I have a Kenmore (Whirlpool) mini fridge (our main) and a mid-size upright freezer, both about twenty years old, and both work wonderfully. We bought a closer-to-full-size (e.g., what would have been considered full-size in the 1990s) Amana (also Whirlpool) refrigerator a few years ago - also an excellent product.

Thanks for the info on the other brands.

It is what it is. It’s Thanksgiving. At least for the next day or two, I ain’t sweating it.

@graphicguy I mentioned the company that is Whirlpool trained and authorized that I've had 3 times, A to Z. The service guys were very clear that the currently popular brands (then) being pushed in the box stores had trouble with service AND getting parts.

However, when told it would take 6 weeks more to get part, as I told the Lowes warranty rep, give me a new refrigerator and I'll pay $200-250 per year I've had it, and I'd take another Whirlpool from the store stock in the area without reservation.

I was stunned when the repairman for the fridge said the last part had been "lost in shipment" and it'd be 6 weeks per Whirlpool to get more electronic boards. But apparently after 10 days Lowes warranty had gotten them the part.

If I had to buy a fridge, I'd shop Lowes (they pushing big sales on some items) and generally have regular sales and I'd buy a Maytag, Kitchenaide, or Whirlpool. What one store doesn't have in stock, is at another store in the area to generalize. Home Depot tends to have slightly reoptioned models of some brands (GE and family) because Depot credit is held by GE for their cards IIRC. Makes it hard to compare prices. E.g., a dishwasher may have durable covered wires instead of vinyl covered, a higher priced option.

If there's a class action suit, might be worth putting the LG in the garage. Of course, greedy lawyers do the class action to get money for themselves, not for the victims--a la Stan Chesley and others.

Our Whirlpool side-by-side has glass shelves and ice maker is in the door, so no space lost on top shelf of freezer for it. There's a tube across the top of the freezer to carry coldest air to the ice maker at the front in the door. The side-by-side has more usable space in the freezer than the freezer on the bottom style has. I showed my wife in the store how the ice makers differed and the bottom freezers had a rolling tray to fuss with to get at food.

Stan Chesley wasn't greedy. He was a crook! That's why he has been disbarred.
Greed is good, if it also benefits your client. When you steal from them, you should go to jail.
