Nice car. But, for $52K I expected more.

Did a test drive on city streets and on the interstate for about 20 minutes. It had the new “all digital” gauges, which was kind of slick. Steering is better than 3 series of the past. Nice grunt off the line from a stand still. MOtor sounds a little rough (especially compared to the silky V6 my TLX has). Stereo can’t come near the ELS in my TLX. Handled fine.

But, for $52K I could buy the Stinger GT or the GENESIS G70, both of which are much more dynamic to drive and has all the bells and whistles the BMW had. That $52K doesn’t even get me the hot 6 turbo.

Thanked my sales person, but mentioned his car wasn’t enough to get me to change vehicles.

I just feel BMW is pricing themselves out of the market compared to the competition.

Not meant to demean any here who love BMWs. There’s lots to love. I just can’t see the value equation.

Hey, I have one and I think their prices got out of control, especially for some of the packages and options. For example, wanting 300 bucks for Apple Play (at the time I bought mine) was beyond ridiculous.

The 2014 MB GLK 250 BT, (2016 morfed to MB GLC) got new shoes & alignment (could have gone another set of shoes) after 76,000 miles. 😂👍 & 3 oil & filter changes. 9 mm left on brake pads. I’m glad the seats are not leather.

I’m keeping this one for the long-haul. It’s great not having to pay all the extra: insurance, registration, maintenace: scheduled, unscheduled, etc., for multiple cars.

You have never heard of the Eisenhuth horseless vechile company? Their one and only model was the Compound made around 1905, less than a thousand were made and IIRC only one exists to this day. It is interesting as it had a 3 cylinder 5 stroke engine. The combustion occurred in the two cylinders on either side of a larger middle cylinder. The exhaust from the two end cylinders was expelled into the middle cylinder which increased power and reduced fuel consumption.

The deadline that POTUS established for trade deal(s) for imported/exported vehicles with the EU is due to expire shortly - the penalty for not agreeing on a trade deal was supposed to be a 25% tariff on imports and the imposition of a tax on EU vehicles made in the USA that do not contain a certain percentage of American-made parts.

My take on this tariff threat is that its a ploy to get more plants built in the USA which would increase employment opportunities and sales of raw materials.  What do you guys think?  Will POTUS attach tariffs to these vehicles or not and why do you think that way?

The POTUS has never made it a secret that one of the administrations’ priorities was to get manufacturing back on shore/to the USA.

Many states, counties, cities, like to slowly to quickly KILL the golden goose/geese once it/they decide to nest. CA killed the Toyota Carolla, Tacoma plants, for example.

Three examples that seem not to be being killed would be the Mercedes, KY and BMW S. Carolina, plants. VW before all the brouhaha put a $ 6/7 B plant in TN.

I think he should finish one project (China) before starting another one. It feels like a straight up obsession, when he speaks about German cars in the US and it sounds like a personal vendetta against Merkel, more than anything else. She wasn't nice to him, you know. Besides being potentially ruinous for some companies and the consumers, placing tariffs on passenger cars under national security clause is beyond ridiculous.

LOL... I know there's a rugby star named Eisenhuth. I shoulda known that there was an auto connection, especially coming from this group :) Since there's only one Eisenhuth owner, that might not be much of a club...LOL

More owners club discussions are going to be created, and I think they'll be a good place for owners to commiserate, remember favorite models we owned, share photos, and all that fun social stuff. If your make isn't there yet, it's not a slight, just that we started with 10 to see if we'd have any traction. Seems like we do, and I'm going to keep "watering the garden" to grow things. I bet there are some makes that should be added before Bentley or Lamborghini, and your requests are welcome

Here's one of the hiccups in that strategy; transplants like BMW and MB in the south produce a lot of vehicles for export. If he lays down too many tariffs, between counter tariff cost and country's citizens responding in kind, those plants will probably have to layoff. May affect the Boeing plant in SC too. That is in addition to American citizens getting hit by the impact from parts price increases even in their Detroit vehicles. Unintentionally, he may be hitting the core of his political base. These days, sometimes I feel like we're constantly flying in turbulence.

We USED to have owners clubs, so we're reviving the concept. Just a place for owners of XYZ to meet and greet, a place for newbies to perhaps find things out about XYZ from people who own them, and generally spread the sense of community that we have here in Cars & Convos.

I think the ship sailed years ago. When Edmunds went for "granularity" and torpedoed all the active boards ten or twelve years ago, many people gave up on the site and went on to the various social media sites to discuss cars.

Time will tell. I'm a creature of habit, which is probably the only reason I'm still here, but I can think of dozens of very interesting people who used to post on Edmunds who haven't been heard from in years.

Absolutely NOT on all points! China has been/is will keep slow rolling the USA. Don’t even start about copy right rampant infringement, let alone trade secrets stealing. Germany, et al, has been generationally miserly about NATO $ funding. So of course Merkel was PO’d. You come to MY country with total German red carpet treatment and you tell ME I’m a deadbeat? We may have forgotten, but the whole concept of building foreign cars plants in the USA ARE to overcome the LONGSTANDING 25% so-called foreign car to USA chicken tax?

The POTUS job has evolved into a 24/7 Informational & chicken with chopped off head action Overload Center. The White House is true CHAOS & hopefully controlled.

But on the other hand, with little to no internal manufacturing, etc., what kind of national security is there?

The big unknown out there may be how Americans respond to the inflationary impact of tariffs. At he bottom line, they are taxes on the consumer. Maybe he'll pull all of this off smoothly, or maybe he will create another Jimmy Carter economy.

After all, you all have been around here almost as long as the moderators (some of you even longer) and getting your experience and expertise involved would be great. The discussions are tagged so you can get to a list of them with no other clutter, and here's a link to Owners Clubs that can be bookmarked.

If we need to add more "clubs" to fit what's in your garage, feel free to create one or give one of the mods a yell and we can get it up and rolling.

What list, what club, what’s a bookmark?
Yeh, I went to Mercedes ownwers but how do you bookmark it?
I think it has something to do with that little star thingy under your user name but beyond that I’m lost.
Are you going to bookmark PT Cruiser OF?
You will probably have 2 members.
Yeah, and both angry. I looked at the Kia list and I was the only one.
Keep the faith I'm sure someone else will show up. I see there is a Subie Club already started and I might go in there to see what's going on. Plus, I might even have something to report.

As you guys know, I have been working on Mrs. j for a while now about her needing a new car. After all it's 7 years old now but just turned 36K miles yesterday. Anyway, as I'm looking at a new 2019 Legacy 3.6R Limited to replace her 2012 that is the same trim level, she is in the office lounge chair watching TV when she glances over at the monitor and says, "c'mon, how many times do I have to tell you I don't want another car and we're NOT getting another car, BUT, if we got one that is the color I'd want". I was looking at a burgundy exterior with the beige interior. Same color combo as the '09 Genny I had, which I'm still sorry I traded in for the '15 Genny that is an old man's gray exterior with black interior that I bought for myself as a retirement gift. To lay it on a little bit more I said, "here is the interior" as I clicked on the interior view. She said, "yeah, I like that too. I agree, that's a nice looking car". OK, now I'm getting somewhere.

Let me take a minute to explain why she doesn't want a new car. She doesn't want to get used to another car. Once she is comfortable with a car she just does NOT want to change. If she got used to driving a tank, and I mean tank like in Sherman, she wouldn't want anything else as long as it starts and doesn't give her any trouble. Honest, I have tried to think of a way to have her Subie break down or at least not start when she came back to her car after coming out of the mall but if she ever got wind of that I'd be a goner. So, I have to keep working on her.

Yesterday was a damn good start and now I have some hope. If you regulars remember, when I got my '09 Genny, she was dead set against me getting that car too because, in her defense, we really didn't need a new car. I just wanted one and luckily she really liked the color combo of my '09 Genny. You guys would have been sooo proud of me the way I worked her when I got that car, and like I said before about that purchase, by the time I was done with her, I had here believing SHE wanted that car and I was just an innocent bystander.

It might be working again and with any luck she might have a new car fairly soon. However, in keeping with the Edmunds policy of member honesty and full disclosure, I might be reporting the only thing my insistence got me was another few laps around the dining room table.

    Wish me luck.

Indeed, when it comes to the passenger fleet, average age is roughly 11.5+years (heavy emphasis on the plus) to answer the “tariff” question. Indeed, most of the passenger vehicle fleet, cars are not tariffed. So for example that’s why tariffed vehicles such as high-priced BMWs, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc. resale values drop like the proverbial falling rocks

The latest new car sales record is approximately 17.4 M. Most sophisticated car consumers know that. What goes unknown/said is the 34 M yearly used car sales.

Very difficult to predict because the POTUS and, I"m sure, his advisers, don't seem to have a very clear grasp on what tariffs can and can't do, and the unintended consequences of either. Basically what I mean is, no matter how you cut it, you cannot "win" a tariff war, ever, under any circumstances. One way or the other, the other side will get back what it lost. The big loser in a tariff war is always the consumer. Tariffs are just another form of taxation, and you know who pays for that. To put it another way, every "job" gained due to tariff pressure will cost the taxpayer at least double what the job is worth, or more IMO.

Ah.... just look @ Detroit ! ? 😱 Once the population was 1.4, 1.5 M. Due to loss of jobs, manufacturing, drugs, political mismanagement, etc the population dropped to roughly 500,000 or so. 144 sq mile parcel tax base sank 44 sq miles ? It’s a great time to get on the 30/40 years to 60/80 years rebuild. But @ this juncture, the crystal ball is foggy.

Trade restrictions and tariffs were a major contributory to the great depression. Long term they generally don't work out well.

Hopefully it effects China in those ways. They have been levying tariffs against United States & it’s products since Nixon & Kissinger opened in the early late 60’s as VP to late 1969, 70’s China to US technologies, know how, education, training, markets, & capital markets.

    Here is a WSJ article (5membership) to Hawaii’s half built $ 9 B from $5B (20 miles) train in paradise? https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-a-20-mile-train-line-swelled-into-a-9-billion-debacle-11553270393

It is over everything: over time, over non delivery from massive traffic problems, over too many court proceedings, over budget (100% so far, 260% projected )

Indeed for all the environmentalists in Hawaii, I scratch my head on this one. The map shows large parts of the track are scheduled to be 12 to 20 feet UNDER seawater, IF the climate change environmentalists are correct.

I now have to laugh about Governor Jerry Brown’s bullet train. At least they honestly admit it that the bullet train goes NO WHERE and ..., it does.

You could have stopped at loss of jobs---the rest is speculative. Corporations abandoned the city, first and foremost, because corporations have no allegiance to city, state, or nation anymore. They do what they gotta do.

If you had the power to make say 10 major corporations disappear, you could turned Silicon Valley into a similar ghost town in the snap of the fingers, and neither politics, nor drugs, nor anything else could do a thing to reverse it.

If it becomes more profitable to build Buicks on the moon, or Toyotas in Siberia, that's what will happen.

OK, no more 500 word essays unless you actually "buy" a new car. Dream all you like, but, do it on your time.

I guess you're trying to tell me that, once again, I captivated you enough that you read my entire post. Without the need for a paper bookmark to get back to it later. :p

Because I read so much I have learned to skim long articles by reading the first sentence of each paragraph. Sometimes with your long novel posts...I read the first and last sentence. I showed my wife a car.........and, I might have a report that we bought it.

I was delighted. Drunk at 7:30 in the morning. Repeat offender.

His blood alcohol level was double the limit I believe, and that was taken later in the hospital ( .17 percent).

He had earlier been charged with intoxicated driving in 2013. When he was convicted of that offense, he was advised by a Superior Court judge that, “Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is inherently dangerous to human life. If you continue to drive under the influence and as a result of your driving someone is killed, you can be charged with murder.”

Charges of murder were brought by the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office following the 2017 accident and he received the most number of years possible.....21!

I am not religious but Amen.

Hmm, what are the codes here....21 years to life? Does that mean if he takes underwater basket weaving, etc. that he will be out for time served ?

The system seems to care more for the offenders rights, than they do the minority offended.

Meanwhile are we ready for $70. oil l? https://finance.yahoo.com/news/more-shale-cares-saudi-arabia-pushes-least-70-130345623--finance.html

Unfortunately there are no surviving family members. Passersby tried to save the child with CPR, but couldn't.

I should have been more clear. The deceased had to have family members that would like to "talk" to this killer. In the unlikely event there is no family, send out a request for volunteers. Got to find more than enough to get the job done.

Ah.... just look @ Detroit !

Now your last paragraph is highly highly speculative ? 😝 My points unfortunately were/ are/remain on point! So that Silicon Valley power that you speak of is not really hard to get & exercise incorrectly. One example remains Toyota. They got rid of one of Toyota’s plant. What remains unseen were the VENDORS that got killed supporting them. SoCAL got on the “get rid of Toyota” HQ band wagon. I think they are now learning how to speak Texan. 😜 boy howdy? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Motor_Sales,_USA

“Let me take a minute to explain why she doesn't want a new car. So, I have to keep working on her.”

Just pull a plug wire off while she’s sleeping. Make up some impending doom explanation and finish it off with a worry of how much longer before it blows up for good. You’ll have your new car in a day.

Great, just as I've got her leaning towards getting a new Subie, you lay this on me. FWIW, her 6 cylinder engine with 36K miles seems to be doing well, at least up to this point. So getting another one doesn't worry me. Hopefully Scotty was talking about the puny 4 cylinder jobs not the 6.

As for creating a fault to scare her into getting another car, that's fine until out of the blue one of my Son's lets it slip years from now how I scared her into getting another car. You guys will miss me for sure when that happens and everyone in here will come gunning for you because of it. :@

There are plenty of people well trained in economics who know what to do, but no one is listening to them. Historical data on this subject is immense and all of it points to: Don't ever, ever start a tariff war.

A lot of those recalls seem to involve those Takata airbags. I guess you take your chances with any car. Maybe I could interest him in a low mile PT. :D never had a recall.
