Wait wait wait. Are you out of your mind? Air fryers are way too fast and dangerous. Let the pros deal with that. You'd be lucky to be able to handle a pan on an open flame, my friend. And let's not even talk about how they do it in Germany.

Only when I'm in reverse gear
Actually, recalling all the times I've been hit in life:
1. I was parked and someone turned into my side backing themselves up too soon/early/sharply (I was speeding 0 MPH). 2. I was stopped in a line of traffic at a stop sign and got rear-ended (I was speeding 0 MPH). 3. I was stopped and hit from the side in a parking garage making a 3-point turn into a parking spot (I had braked in time to be speeding 0 MPH at time of collision). 4. I was going about 20-25 MPH and someone decided to start a left turn in front of me just at the wrong split second, colliding with my right front edge. 4. I had just engaged reverse gear after the first point in my 2 point turn to back up into a parking spot, I might have moved a foot at 0.25 MPH before the rear camera could even engage (less than 1/2 second after engaging reverse).
So 4 out of 5 of your accidents happened when you weren't moving - or almost not moving. You could be right then, the faster you go the less chance you will be in an accident.
, and there's a good reason for that, and the same applies to bad drivers targeting you and your vehicle, including that Garbage truck that hit you when you were a dead and sitting duck.
Since you mentioned the garbage truck incident. We were stopped at the light. The garbage truck hit us in the rear probably going 45 or 50 mph. He hit the right side of the rear bumper harder - off center a bit, my car was propelled forward on a 45 degree angle and went up the curb on the other side of the road...between a cement telephone pole and a bus shelter. That was a 45 mph difference in speed. I was sent off on an angle, so what I can tell you is you would have to be hit exactly right to continue in a straight line.
But, how was I supposed to keep moving when I came to a yellow/red light? I guess, speed up and go through so I wouldn't be a sitting duck....don't think a cop would let me off with that answer!
Also getting estimate on new front door package just for kicks. And I really need a new shed, but hate to drop $3k on one of those. Might try to paint it again, and throw some fresh plywood down since the floor is somewhat spongy.
We had our front door replaced a few years ago by Home Depot at Home Services. I don't like to plug HD, but there's one guy (licensed contractor) that does the work. I picked out the door, he comes and measures, picks up the door at HD when it comes in and then installs. It came out perfect and cost around $1,200 for everything.
Wow, $1200 for a door? I’m thinking of replacing my front door when I have some storm damage repair done. Simple wood frame steel door is about 200 bucks at HD.
What was the installation cost? Did they do anything other than install the door and hardware?
I think that was about the cost of our front door. If you get an energy-efficient one they are heavier. Ours is beautiful. We got it at the time that such expenses were tax deductible too. On another note, we are hoping to re-do the kitchen counters and cabinets later this fall. Depending on circumstances of course. I’m also very happy we made the decision to buy out the Volt lease before all this started. I really do not want to be car-shopping now. Love reading about others doing so, however!
My front door is pretty bare bones, just a simple 6 panel steel with no lites. Screws into the framing through the hinges so it’s a quick installation. I’ve priced some at Home Depot for between $200-400. Half hour installation time tops.
I was just curious how much they charge to put it in. If it costs more than $500 I’d be motivated to do it myself.

He hit you off-center. He hit you with a garbage truck. Apples and oranges, unless you can find a Youtube video of a garbage truck going 36 over 155 MPH. Also, 36 is a lot less than 45, and he is orders of magnitude bigger and heavier than you, because, garbage truck.
As to going through the red light, if it helps avoid an imminent collision, and you can do it safely, I'd do it. This is why I don't like cops that would ticket a situation where you were doing the safe thing, but technically in violation.

my door is more because it will have glass in it, and apparently the sidelight panels add a crazy amount to the cost. And it would be pre-hung I believe because of the style. so need to pop off a bunch of trim, then pull/cut out the old frame, then prep the opening and install the new frame. I assume the sidelights go in separate, and are not part of the frame, but I have never seen that type of door installed.

Just reading this gave me cold chills- I can't imagine how much courage it would take to attempt even one of these tasks: DIY
1 is simple for anyone. add cabin filter to that, which is just as easy.
but the rest all fall into the category or, it depends. If you have a decent tool set, none are conceptually impossible, but how simple really depends on the car. And not everyone is really ready to tackle some of this (or depending on condition, would ever want to).
headlights, well, a 65 mustang is a bit different than a fancy car with HIDs. A halogen bulb is usually easy, unless you have to take the front valance off. Battery, not on a BMW! and some are easier than others. Brakes most people aren't equipped to handle. Oil change, can be a real pain without a lift, and considering how cheap a dealer will do it, probably not even worth it.
Cabin and Air Filters, headlights, etc I’m all for trying. In fact I plan to swap the headlights on the ZHP from the OE ZKW assemblies to the OE AL headlights.
Brakes and oil change I may do on the ZHP at some point, just because I’m curious to do it. But I also consider letting my mechanic do it to be a wise investment of my time and good for relationship building. Don’t have any concern I’d break anything or something silly like that.

I've changed HIDs, and brakes are a doddle, as the Brits say- especially fixed caliper brakes- Brembos, ///M, etc. The only thing that gives me pause is BMW now has a lifetime guarantee on pads installed at the dealer- that might pay off depending on the vehicle and driving habits. As for battery registration, as I've noted at length, there literally is an app for that- if you want to DIY on your BMW it's only $60/year and worth every penny.

....or like I say, rather let the guy do it.....I got lots of other things I would rather be doing. Screw up the electricals on a Mercedes....not worth it! Especially if it is the rear battery that 98% of the population didn't know existed. Might depend on the value of the car too whether you want to DIY. My neighbor/friend took their CRV to the fast lube place.......leaked oil until he took it back in to the 5th time and they finally put in oil filter #5 the correct way. That's another thing....buy all the right tools and then find I hate doing it! Some people can repair cars, some can play a piano, some can paint a picture.....we are all different.
Getting back to vacuum cleaners. Mrs D100 really liked her Dyson Cordless, but, it quit working after about 6 years. She bought a Tineco A11 Hero+ Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, from Amazon. She is thrilled, has lots of features and works way better than the Dyson. It has halogen headlights which really show where there is dust. They designed it much better too, easy to empty, extra filter, and easy to change the battery (Dyson was a real pain). It is a lot quieter and the motor kind of sounds like a sports car! At $240 it is a real bargoon!
Another speeder incident - I suppose I can believe that one, as the vehicle should have some power, and roads in that area can be fairly straight and empty
A kid speeding in dad’s car? I hate to admit that I was that kid at 16 (not the dui part though). I put dad’s ‘66 Dodge Polara station wagon through it’s paces.
I used to drag race my mothers 1958 Hillman Californian against a friends 1962 Hillman Minx. Top speed was probably 65 mph.
If that’s what I would have had to drive as a teenager, I would have just stayed with my Schwin.

I hope it has a speed limiter on that sports car motor.
andres3" That 191 MPH maniac has a greater chance of killing you rear-ending you at your "speed limit or just above driving" than they do rear-ending the other speed maniac going 155 MPH, whereby the collision force is only 36 MPH.
Dino; Just pure junk science. Primary collision force is not the only factor influencing its outcome. Vehicles going 155 mph and 180 can just barely touch each other their motion will become too unstable to handle, most likely killing both drivers in the aftermath, just watch some races from the past. Cars are complex systems of multiple connected masses with links of different stiffnesses, as such have mutlple degrees of freedom, so when forward speed is changes, each of those DOFs will respond differently when an additional upsetting factor is introduced (such as "little bump" from behind).
Snake; don't be to sure about that, sure that 191 mph car hits the 155 mph car at a speed of 36 mph relative to the 155 mph car, but that car is still going 155 mph. A 3k to 4k pound car doing 155 mph has a lot of kinetic energy stored up in it that will have to be released in the accident. It's not the same as hitting a stationary car at 36 mph.

This was last year, but I usually look for antique bottles and glassware at yard sales during spring/summer/fall. At one sale last October, there was one of those robot vacuums sitting on a table. Looked like it had never been used. More out of curiosity than need, I asked the owner if it was for sale, and if so, why?
She said she bought it on eBay. But, it had the wrong plug (EU plug) and she couldn’t get it to charge. She said she paid $400 for it (not so sure about that). It looked well built and seemed to have some sort of navigation unit on top of it. I offered her $30 for it. We settled on $40 after a little back and forth.
Got it home, looked it up. The “brand” was Roborock, which sounded hokey to me. Apparently, they make a lot of these robotic vacs. I use international plug converters for when I travel. Hooked it up. The unit had a dock which it charges from. Put it on the dock after plugging it in, and voila, it charged. It works VERY well. More research showed that it does have a laser guidance system that it uses to guide it around obstacles. I schedule it to vacuum every day. It does so, and when it’s done, it automatically goes back to the dock to recharge.
What started out to be an oddity from a garage sale, ended up being something I use daily.
It's been raining here all day so when I drove over to the dermatologist for my appointment this morning, the windshield wipers were "chattering" terribly with the heavy rain (first time I drove the car in rain ☔️). So I called the dealership and they had me bring the car in at 10:00 AM.
It seems it was not the wipers, but rather the windshield. They had to apply a chemical directly on to the windshield and then it has to "cure" for an hour or two. Then they buff the residue out which cleans the windshield. They said it happens because the car was sitting at the port for 6 weeks and it sat at the factory awaiting transport. They also rap the window as well.
So, I should get my car back in a few minutes and will make sure the wipers don't chatter.

What about the fear of dropping a 1-of a kind screw or bolt or tool head piece down the engine compartment where it could go into a black hole and never be found again? I know, everything is replaceable, but it might not be IMMEDIATELY replaceable.

You would think they would have known that and prepared the car properly the first time. Reminds me, I was reading a review of the 2020 Volvo V60 Polestar which he liked quite a bit but it said the Heads Up display had lots of info, and you can see it even when wearing Polaroid sunglasses!
When my wipers chatter, it's the oil layer on the window along with the road grit. I scrub it with fine steel wool, or an SOS type pad, and water. Rinse. And in absence of the gunk on the windshield, wipers do great. In fact wipers on my Malibu have never been replaced. I use AC Delco wipers on my Cobalt for the beam type.

This might be long....but, a bit different; (From Dennis O'Sullivan, Wheels May 15 2020 QUESTION
Maybe you can help me! This problem deals with my daughter. She purchased a car from a used car dealer about two months ago and has not, as yet, put over twenty kilometres on the car. The unfortunate thing is that the day that she brought the car home, she found out that she had lost her job, as a result of the latest pandemic that we are all in. She has informed the dealer that she cannot afford the car now because she lost her job and all she got was their rhetoric, “she signed for and took delivery of the car.” When I called to plead with them, they told me that they could do nothing for me. What kind of a person takes this kind of advantage of a young girl that went from ecstatically happy to down right miserable, all in one day? Can you help?
A father in Halton
ANSWER
This story is a little more complicated than what you have described to us. First of all, she did not inform the dealer about her circumstances when she took the car back to the dealership. She just took the car back and left a note on the windshield that she did not want the car anymore and was going to stop any payments for the car. The used car dealer financed the car for her and told me that they had tried several times to reach your daughter but nobody answered the phone. They then sent your daughter a registered letter telling her that she had to pick up the car or they were going to start charging her storage. That registered letter prompted her boyfriend to step into the fray and that is when all correspondence stopped and the dealer is now suing your daughter. Most people, be it a used car dealer or anyone else that has a retail shop, never take kindly to insults and threats such as were perpetrated by the boyfriend. The dealer has told me that if your daughter had come back with the information that she had just lost her job, they could have worked with her in order to get her out of the deal, without the mess that she is now in. Dropping the car off and leaving a windshield message was not the correct thing to do if she wanted the dealer to help her out of her situation. Getting the boyfriend involved was even worse.
Even with all the abuse that the used car dealer has taken from her and her boyfriend, they are now still willing to work with your daughter to solve this without going to court, where she would surely lose. Here is what I have proposed to the dealer and they have agreed. To get out of the deal, I have suggested that your daughter pay the used car dealer’s cost, which is around five hundred dollars and they will take the car back without any further charge to your daughter. This is where you, as the father, comes in and helps her pay the five hundred dollars. Let this be a lesson to her that she should have taken responsibility for her actions and not rely on a passing boyfriend (mouthpiece) to solve her problems.

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned. I'll guess the only houses that get mitigation systems are those that are sold and tested in a pre-purchase inspection. In our general area, probably the actual number that need mitigation is 100 X the number that have it. (because they haven't been tested).
But, I'd insist on a radon test, just to make sure the mitigation is working.

When we bought our house two years ago, the inspection revealed that the Radon levels were high, and a mitigation system was recommended. This, on a house that was only 2 years old when we bought it.
Spent $800 to have the system installed; the wife insisted that we use a company that was certified by the state and had a good reputation. Our system has a 7 year warranty.
Of the three houses we've owned, this is the first that has a mitigation system on it. I've noticed quite a few houses in my neighborhood have them, as well. I suspect it has to do with the ground the houses were built on.

Nobody is giving the full story. Were there extra fees added to the purchase price? Extended warranty? Did you take a test drive?
For windshields, use Bon Ami cleanser. Doesn’t scratch. Pros use it! And yeah, it’s usually the windshield not the wipers causing chatter. Just use cleanser/pad/alcohol on the blades too.
Radon? Most every basement has some. So good to gave the system. Just do a radon test as part of the inspection.

Recently a long saga of a guy that was doing some engine project and while picking something up, managed to drop a sharpie down into the intake plumbing. Of course it's speculation. On all our parts, yours included. But of all the contact I have seen over the last 30+ years watching several different forms of racing, I don't know that I have ever seen contact made with closing speeds of 30+ mph end well. Not to mention, any contact involving drivers who aren't so talented that they race cars for a living is even less likely to end well.
When we built our house 22 years ago, Radon testing was mandatory. My house didn't need it, but several houses in the neighborhood had them right from the start. I think a few have had them added since then, probably when a resale.

For windshields, use Bon Ami cleanser. Doesn’t scratch.
BonAmi and Barkeeper's Friend both contain oxalic acid IIRC and that's another good cleaner. The steel wool doesn't scratch either. I personally like the pads that have a cleaner in them, SOS, Brillo, etc..
Let's be honest, everyone here is guilty of a healthy amount of speculation. That's all these arguments are, is differing speculations and projections on what will happen when the 190 MPH MB AMG hits the 155 MPH Audi TTS.
Unless anyone here has experience recreating experimental real world similar type crashes on the Autobahn at these speeds? Prove me wrong.
Racing is a contact sport, not all the contact results in a fiery explosion or spin-out. I've seen plenty of bumps on the racing circuit on "straights" to prove my points. I've also seen well-timed bumps at turns to retake the lead, but these are almost always at a turn!

I have never seen two racing cars collide and both go in a straight line and come to a safe stop after.

But, how was I supposed to keep moving when I came to a yellow/red light? I guess, speed up and go through so I wouldn't be a sitting duck....don't think a cop would let me off with that answer!

I was just curious how much they charge to put it in. If it costs more than $500 I’d be motivated to do it myself.

As to going through the red light, if it helps avoid an imminent collision, and you can do it safely, I'd do it. This is why I don't like cops that would ticket a situation where you were doing the safe thing, but technically in violation.

there is something to be said for having a plain, simple house!

but the rest all fall into the category or, it depends.

Brakes and oil change I may do on the ZHP at some point, just because I’m curious to do it. But I also consider letting my mechanic do it to be a wise investment of my time and good for relationship building. Don’t have any concern I’d break anything or something silly like that.

QUESTION

Better start documenting the paper work!
But, I'd insist on a radon test, just to make sure the mitigation is working.

Radon? Most every basement has some. So good to gave the system. Just do a radon test as part of the inspection.
DIY? Yes things happen. I Follow a Volvo board, And there are some interesting threads. Recently a long saga of a guy that was doing some engine project and while picking something up, managed to drop a sharpie down into the intake plumbing. After some research and failure to get it from the top, required hours spent removing parts on the bottom (suspension maybe?) to get the pipe off from the bottom. At least if a pro does it, on their dime and time to fix!
