I seem to recall one fellow around here who liked to do his own DIY oil changes. He is a very knowledgeable guy, and you know what, the $40 cost of an oil change ended up costing $5000.
What's that saying about a little bit of knowledge can be a bad thing?
I see it happen in business and in peoples personal lives like my SIL....tries to save a few bucks and it ends up costing him way more. He's the one who made an AWD car into a 2WD car :(
****Besides, I like to keep knowledgeable people employed - I may need them one day, and it is good for the economy.
Don't I know! Oil changes are hellishly complex; I'm about to stop doing them- my anxiety level is much too high. I may yet adopt the "Ignorance is Bliss!" mantra...
Even I can do oil changes correctly on my GM's. I don't on the Malibu and Cruze because both are still under warranty bumper bumper. Dealer cost is not outrageous so I've had them do the changes.
Good, glad to hear it. Personally, I would rather hmm, play tennis, play pickleball, read a book, read the newspaper, listen to music, take Trixie for a walk, watch something on TV or streaming.....in fact, almost anything than do an oil change. And what do you do with the old oil anyway....have to take it somewhere to dump it........beyond me why anyone would want to DIThemselves.

We ordered a pizza for the first time in about 10 years...just for a change. It was OK, but the toppings were hard to find. The second night we had the other half and we added our own toppings....made it 10X as good.

We liked that one so much we got a frozen pizza with our groceries.....we added our own toppings....just pop it in the oven for 15 minutes....it was the best pizza of all and cost 1/3rd the amount!

Next time your traveling between the Great White North and the Mouse State stop by and we'll take you out for some real pizza.
Thanks....that's a great offer and I have had excellent pizza in Chicago actually. I will keep that in mind....would love to do it - hopefully will get back to Florida one day too.

Speaking of great pizza in the Chicago area - although I prefer NY pizza to be honest (I lived in Chicago and the northern and western suburbs for 23 years) several come to mind:

Uno's and Duo's in the downtown area (famous for their deep-pan pizzas)
HomeRun Pizza in the western suburbs (softer crust pizza with tons of cheese).

Here in Southeast Florida the pizza is obviously identical to NY pizza - thin crust with tons of cheese. I prefer garlic and pepperoni with extra cheese. I'm drooling as I write this post!😉🤓

There is a pizza place that opened on the other side of town some months back. I convinced the wife to give it a try and it's now our "go to" place. Most of their pizza is NY style, but I was browsing the menu and discovered they also offer a deep dish option. Figured I would give it a try and - oh my! - is it good.

    Nice to have choices.

You are quite blessed to have NY and authentic deep dish pizzas at your disposal. Down here, their deep dish is not the Chicago authentic style.

NY style Sicilian (square thick and loaded with cheese) is another favorite of mine. Hard to find it outside the NYC area.

*I am sure an oil change is easy to do since they use minimum wage teens to do them at the 5 minute lube place down the street. It has nothing (zero - 0 - nada- niet) to do with anxiety, it is because I have got better things to do with my time. I have done all that stuff when I drove my old cars....I choose not to do it anymore - some of us have a life.

I was recollecting back to when I was a kid (6-8 years old) and my father driving the family downtown to Manhattan from Queens on Sunday afternoons to have lunch at the 31st Street Restaurant off Third Avenue in my grandfather's 1947 Dodge Sedan with Fluid Drive. I remember it had suicide rear doors and was quite comfortable.

We were too poor back then to have our own car - so Dad would borrow his Dad's Dodge (grandpa didn't drive - he had it so his children would have something to drive).

Thinking back to those days, things weren't so bad - life was less complicated and less stressful even though we didn't have much. I spent most of my free time playing with my brother and our friends in the park across the street. We played lots of handball and basketball.

But I just remembered the beige Dodge Fluid Drive my Dad borrowed from his Dad once or twice a month. Those were the days! 😇

I have a Dyson that is about 5 yrs old. I paid way too much for it. My wife was surprised that I bought it and still won’t use it in fear of dropping and breaking it. It won’t stand on its own so you have to set it down carefully when it’s not hung on the wall to charge. About a year ago the beater bar motor head stopped working. It was out of warranty so I was prepared to buy a replacement part, hoping not to buy a new unit. Dyson sent me the needed parts at no charge, which was a very pleasant surprise. The run time from the battery is starting to fade and the battery isn’t replaceable so not sure what’s next when it becomes unusable.

Is it REALLY not replaceable? Or is it like Apple products and they just say its not replaceable but the brave can pull it off?

My wife is out of her damned mind when it comes to vacuums. I have a dyson sitting in my garage that is relegated to car use. Her excuses for kicking vacuums out of the house vary far and wide, from “not enough power” to “It makes a funny smell.” My folks had ONE vacuum their entire marriage. I’ve averaged at least 1 every 2 yrs.
We have a Kirby which is around 22 years in our household.

Let's move on to air fryers. We ordered a NuWave Brio and it was delivered Monday. I'm making fish tacos this evening and giving it a whirl. From what friends tell us we have been missing out so if anyone has recipes send links!

I was at Target yesterday and decided to check their air fryers as I am interested in one. The top shelf of the aisle that had the air fryers had a bunch of nice looking display models yet not one air fryers for actual sale were represented in the display models.
Those are probably popular right now....so they are basically sold out. They probably don't want to sell the display models though you could ask. Try amazon!
I'll try that. I like the idea of an air fryer as I want to lose some weight and fried air sounds like a good low calorie option.

Everyone has their own tastes, but for me, no way is any frozen pizza an improvement over the real thing. And by “real” — I’m not a regional pizza snob. There are lots of variations, and as long as they’re being made with care in an oven at the proper temperature (which home ovens can’t attain) with fresh ingredients, they’ll be wonderful.

last gas grill I bought (happened to be at Wally World this time) I took one of the assembled ones. Then found out it was too wide to get into the car, at least with the wheels on. And I had no tools with me to take pieces off. So, wheeled it back into the store and exchanged it for one in the box, and put it together myself after all.

actually, I bought one as a housewarming present for the daughter when they got the house last year. From Lowes. had access to a PU that time, so took it home. Then discovered when I went to put a tank on, the dim bulb that assembled it had put the cross bars on the wrong ends, so there was no tank support. And they must have used a power tool because the screws were on so tight, I could not get them to budge. Then decided, why should i bother? So back into the truck, and swapped it for one that I confirmed was put together correctly.

moral of the story? It's handy to have a PU available. And if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Got my bill from my 5 day hospital stay near the end of March.
Top line total was almost 53K, 19k for room(billed as semi private, although a private room), 14k for pharmacy, plus another about 20K for other stuff.
My responsibility is about $1.500 after insurance.
Good thing I have insurance and a nice balance in my HSA.

Funny you mention that, as it hit on something I've noticed just in the last couple of weeks. Various pizza chains (Little Caesar's for one) both in the US and Canada are advertising how their pizzas are untouched from the time they go into their ovens until they are in the customer's hands. Great. But they quote oven temperatures of anywhere between 400 and 475 degrees in the ads. Those seemed low to me as I had heard of pizza ovens operating at much higher temperatures, up to 1000 degrees or more in some cases. This baffled me.

We have a couple of the Chicago pizzerias, Malnotti's, here - very thick crust of course and a higher sauce to cheese ratio. Son absolutely loves it, wife and I not so. The crust is tasteless and although I like sauce, I'm not crazy about how sweet it is with pieces of stewed tomatoes. Despite growing up an hour out of Chicago, I like NY pizza better and essentially the way @abacomike described but sans the pepperoni - no nitrates or nitrites for me.

I bought an assembled grill recently from Home Depot. I got it into the Enclave with the top hood removed.

Pizza? Everyone knows that deep dish is good but NYC/NJ pizza is by far the superior pie.

And yes IMO there are bad pizza joints. I once had pizza in Richmond VA that was laughably bad. Frozen may have been better.

Someone mentioned Sicilian style pizza, that’s good stuff too.

sorry, but I am a believer that deep dish is actually a Tomato casserole, not a pizza. Of course I grew up in the NYC suburbs so was spoiled!

I never did, but I saw the menus in the windows. Learned to eat Mongolian BBQ and lots of other good stuff in the course of 22 trips, some as long as 3 weeks, over a period of seven years. But, then again, your question answers itself.

One thing I learned was that "authentic" any type of food likely wasn't. Whether it's Mexican, pizza, hot dogs, etc.. So the Chicago style pizza chain around here likely is gutter food to someone who has had real Chicago pizza. Same for the earlier "New York" style pizza shops.

Chicago deep dish is pretty crappy already, so I imagine a poor imitation would be even more so. ;)

We have some great pizza restaurants in our area, and if you know where to look, you can find some really good authentic NY style pizza (but, they don't always use the words, NY or authentic).

Chicago deep-dish pizza is frequently done with too thick of a crust. Old Chicago is a national chain that is very guilty of that sin. The sides have to come up far enough to contain the infamous sausage wheel, but if the crust is super thick that won't happen.

My wife and I are split on which Chicago pizza is best... I narrowly favor Gino's East, while she has a stronger preference for Lou Malnati's. We both agree that Giordano's, while easier to find, is a distant third, and barely even look at UNO as a pizza place at all.

I learned something from it which is a plus. Now I am curious what the ones I put on the last time (car no longer with us though) were, because they worked great! And what Acura installs from the factory.

Acura does do wipers well. Mine are 3.5 years old and still going strong. No chattering, no missed spots, just a “clean wipe”.

My Malibu 14 wipers at 6.5 years are still fine. BUT the car has been garaged most of the time other than 4 months when it was on a dealer's lot in Illinois before purchase.

GM makes them to last. (I heard what you said.) :)

With other cars the hype and brainwashing by various wiper brands is hilarious. Mattresses, pillows, and vacuum cleaner hyping brainwash the same way.

I used to buy the Walmart wipers that were a step up from their lowest priced item. Then they discontinued both and went to a single inexpensive (cheap) blade. And I would just replace them every 6 months. I do steel wool the windshield when it rains every few months with Dawn. Wiper the blades with isopropanol.

With the beam wipers I started putting on ACDelco beam blades because I saw how well they work on the Malibu. So far so good. Costs more for the Cobalt and Cruize.

Scotty needs to be banned from here. PC. I watched the wiper blade video.

So many scientifically untrue, untested statements. LOL. He even throws in some conspiracy theory about how the stores don't want to sell them because they wouldn't get to make smaller profits per time from selling many more inferior rubber wiper blades more often to the unsuspecting public. That's right there next to the 100-miles per gallon carburetor some car company hid away after buying the patent for it back in the 50s.'

    This guy's awful.

Scotty is also a fanatic fan of Toyota products so what’s everyone’s opinion of this basic appliance? I’ve been following this for a few weeks and they reduced the price twice in $500 increments. Edmunds says dealer price is $12,450. Covid 19 bargain? Still a thousand or two higher than comparable Ford or Chevy...worth it?

I call it an appliance because most people don’t think Toyotas are exciting at all. The ones I’ve driven seem ok for their purpose. Basic transportation.

I was laughing when he admitted he had to change the valve cover gasket on his toyota every so many thousand miles due to leaks, but then he put on a silicon gasket. Why didn't toyota do that originally? I thought all those cars were perfect back in the day and had no flaws.

You need to keep up here, I already asked him about that. He joined the Space Force. I’m assuming that he needs a ride up there to take a test drive in that Tesla that Musk launched. :D

Camry looks nice enough if you want a basic car. Should last forever and be cheap to keep. And with those miles, probably a great Uber candidate (if Uber still exists?)

Uber was the idea. Reliable, most of the steep depreciation behind it, new enough to be ride share eligible until 2027.

Some people like Toyota “appliances“, others like hoopties, others like electric only vehicles, some like 0-60 mainly and still others like FCA or GM. I could bash those in the groups I don’t like as well but we all are enthusiasts - we just come in different shapes and sizes. That’s what makes the world go around.

No interior pics of that Camry unless I missed something. Hopefully it isn't trashed. But a silver over gray cloth Camry is likely the most anonymous car you can find, good if you are planning a bank robbery or other illegal activities.
