One of the first things I do is remove any dealer decals. This one was a bugger to get off as the car was originally sold at this dealer and I suspect it was on there from the start. A little WD 40 and patience it gave way.

Regarding wedding costs: those of us out here in the hinterlands, at least when I was in the target age, were appalled by the amount of money people "back East" spent of weddings. In 1969 I was an usher at a wedding for a friend of mine who was marrying the daughter of a prominent director at one of the only two utilities in AZ. The reception was held in their back yard (they did have a pool), and it was considered perfectly acceptable. Buffet food and drinks. Most weddings out here in those days involved a reception in the church hall or the father's house or yard

I later learned that this was totally unacceptable to those in the East, and midwest too, for that matter. This cancer seems to have moved out here, so I guess there's that these days.

The latest wedding scam is where the bride's family begs the groom's family into helping finance the wedding. Two of my friends got hit with that.

It’s not a scam. It’s just how things are done these days. Everything split 50/50. It’s not like the old days when an expensive wedding was a substitute for a dowry. Our kids got married a year ago, pre-COVID. We split costs a third each way — kids, us, groom’s parents. We didn’t beg the groom’s parents. It was just understood and fairly upfront. That’s pretty typical, especially when the couple is early 30s rather than just starting out. We all helped with a down payment for their first house too.

You call it "How things are done."
I call it a scam.

You don’t know miles nor condition, so how could we possibly put a value on it? If it wasn’t in Canada, I might have been interested depending on mileage.

My first suggestion is to hook up a jumper box and see what happens.

How about Master Limited Partnerships (MLP)?

MLP is just a vehicle for the investment. It would depend on the investment. A lot of these are Real Estate or Oil related. While they may provide income, they can also lose a lot of value.

Not really suitable as a replacement for a CD.

More risk = more reward. A CD is minimum risk but almost zero reward these days. When I started the 401k with my company I said to myself I wanted total security so I chose the stable value bond fund. 2% a year but almost no risk. A few months later I realized I was being too cautious since I could afford to lose it all. I switch to an S&P 500 growth fund and doubled my money.

Of course it lost 34% during the pandemic but it’s back to the positive now. You have to take more risk to get returns these days.

It depends. If it's your whole portfolio, you wouldn't want to be all in cash or all in risky investments. Sometimes, more risk means you lose a lot. It doesn't guarantee you a bigger reward.

My responses were about where to put cash that was in a CD. Assuming you have a balanced portfolio, I gave options.

True. Risk tolerance is an individual decision. Someone only able to tolerate CD level risk shouldn’t be rolling the dice. In my personal example the amount risked was small and represented a tiny fraction of my investments. What I was trying to say was that in an ultra low interest environment you have to take some risk to get a better ROI.

My son got married last year. My contribution was the rehearsal dinner and the cost of the DJ. Not sure what his mother contributed, but I suspect some of the other costs.

I have sons too and I’d expect to contribute to theirs as well. As we have endured this horrible COVID year, I look back on last years wedding with such joy. 200 people from many different places and countries, all together for a weekend of celebration.Unimaginable now. It wasn’t ostentatious— it was just a lot of people to entertain and 2 different cultures. I don’t regret a dime. Never did I dream I’d go an entire year without seeing any of these dear folks. YMYV.

So he wanted to know how to do it. As I was thinking about that his Mother said something like, “as long as we don’t lose anything and can at least get back around the 1% interest we won’t get from our bank savings account that’s fine with me. He laughs and says, “I’ll give you at least 5 times that, are you kidding? Before I could blink she says, “oh, we’re not trying to get rich doing this, 2% is good enough”, as she looks at me and says huh? I said, “well what’s wrong with getting rich with this. After all we did carry him for many years by feeding, clothing and picking up a good part of educating him. But you just gave away the store so we’ll just have to live with that.”

I will say this though, after the sale of the first flip, he took his family and us out for dinner at one of the more expensive fish joints in the Burgh. I’m pretty sure he’ll do that again. I can almost taste the one pound lobster tail I’ll be getting again. I know that took a few franklins from his profits. But I deserved it. Not so sure his Mother deserved it since all she did was point to a few areas and say, “I think it would be nice if you did this here”and more pointing saying the same thing. But don’t think for a minute I was going minimize all her help. 😳

The real scam is the entire wedding industry. Conditioning girls from early age that their life would be over if they don’t have some lavish over-the-top party with white doves flying over or whatever else you read in these magazines. Doesn’t even matter the income tier, it always has to be more than makes sense and attach “wedding” to anything and you double, triple, or quadruple the price, just because you can. No wonder desperate bride’s families are hitting groom’s families for money. If 72-84 month car loans are now normal, so will be groom’s bill at the wedding. The only way to deal with this would be lower the demand, perhaps the pandemic will change the mindset and cure some bridezilla syndromes...

Well it's Christmas eve and what a difference a day makes. Yesterday afternoon it was close to 60 and sunny, I actually was out with the top down. Today the high was under 20. A swing of over 40 degrees in 24 hours.

Our Daughter and SIL got up here from Orlando about noon and were complaining about how cold it was, they didn't believe me we got close to 60 yesterday.

As parents of the groom, we did the rehearsal dinner and the bar expenses for the reception dinner. Brought in alcohol of various types that the kids picked for the reception. The bride's parents helped physically bring in the alcohol stored in their garage, but we paid for most of it--they lived nearby. Bride and parents picked a country location with wedding in the woods.

Overall not bad. We actually padded the rehearsal dinner group with some out-of-town relatives of the bride who were in town the night of the rehearsal that added to the cost. Not normal groom's expense but we got to meet some very interesting people from our new daughter's family. Rehearsal dinner is normally only for the rehearsal participants.

Rehearsal dinner was in a motel's banquet/meeting room. Their food ability was great plus two other motel/hotels in their major brand name group were just blocks away. One of them was a party center with multiple party rooms and a ballroom along with food prep abilities. Because we were the only group for a party at our smaller well known motel, we had excellent service. The planning help from the event person at the location forming the menu was tremendous. The motel even comped one night of our two guest rooms out of the two nights. It was a spendy party but controlled alcohol flow to avoid DUI responsiblity.

We also paid for the majority expenses of the honeymoon although both kids were working and could handle that easily.

That could work...if they had something similar in Canada. It is kind of addictive looking at some of the cars being sold. I'll mention donating it to you....will you pay any tax and duties?

Driver, I would just get it to a shop that specializes on them to do basic inspection/checks on it, to confirm it is running condition, and figure out what it might need. At least that gives you a baseline.

That is probably the best solution....it sounds like she is 2500 miles away, doesn't want to go back to sell a car, and has no one there who she can rely on to do that....plus some people don't want to be doing things like that while covid is around. Maybe Carvana or something like that....they give you a price and pick up the car....don't think we have something like that in Canada.

These things are worth a lot more than I thought! I'd rather buy the 2014 C250 with 34000 miles for $10000, though that is trade-in, the Jag is the for sale price.

Certainly not going to be easy to deal with if she just left it some random place. So finding someone local will need to happen. And someone needs to have the keys!

Carvana won't take a car that does not run (or be known to). And I think they need the owner to be there to pick it up.

Selling it privately, or to a local used car lot, should be easy enough if Canada has titles like the US. She would have to sign the title and send it to whoever is actually holding the car.

The car is about 60 miles from me, I can help a bit but I am trying to follow covid rules right now....and things are very tight, only grocery and hardware stores open at 25% capacity for 4 weeks.
My niece is 2500 miles away from the car......got a job as a lawyer and took off.
My brother is about 1800 miles away from the car....he is more knowledgable about cars and is trying to help her out.
The car is in a garage....they said they would ship it to her for about $6000, but, she is in Vancouver and doesn't need a car.
I will be talking to my brother sometime in the next 3 days.
I was just looking for some possible avenues to try, or suggestions to help him out.

Hers could have 300k miles and seized engine, or it could have 40k miles and be in the wrapper. So a rough estimate is $100 to $15,000.

These things are worth a lot more than I thought! I'd rather buy the 2014 C250 with 34000 miles for $10000, though that is trade-in, the Jag is the for sale price.

The lifetime warranty probably costs more than the car. ;b
