We need some appliance stories. I'll submit mine: I noticed the Lennox heat pump system kept using backup heat yesterday--cold outside. I checked this morning and the outside compressor unit isn't running. No air handler fan. No compressor. No clicking. No nuthin. Grrrrr.
Will call for service tomorrow. I need to check on Lemon Law for heat pumps in Ohio. Now that this one is 4 years old it's had several major repairs. I can't wait to see what this one is. There's still a 5-year warranty on some things with this unit. I feel like I'm back in the 60s where cars lasted 60K miles and then you started expecting repairs and traded it in.
Sorry to learn, very aggravating. Our Carrier lasted almost 14 years before needing anything more than a capacitor. I was leaning towards replacing it with another Carrier but learned their quality is not as good as it once was. A trend? We went with a 16 seer American Standard. Fingers crossed, all good so far.

The outside unit has a replacement air motor, replacement blade, and replacement compressor, along with new freon for the "burned" freon that was in the unit when the compressor burned up.
There also was a problem with the reversing valve, IMHO, in September or August, but they couldn't find anything when they came and tested it.
Inside box has had the air blower motor replaced along with its controls.
I'm thinking of asking the store owner what I can replace it with since it's being so undependable. If it hadn't had a 5-year warranty that the base model doesn't have, I'd have spent a boatload of money.
I can't wait to see what's wrong after I call at 8 am tomorrow. I passed on the emergency service since the resistance heat works really well on this unit.
I'm thinking I'll ask about a replacement unit that's more efficient than even this one is and see what the owner says. Otherwise, I'm checking into an extended warranty.
Maybe when I get one of those automotive fake warranty calls I'll ask if they insure heat pumps.
Here's one from Columbus Ohio. This was around the time Imid Jr was at The OSU. I think this article is allowing the mayor to deflect from the full corruption involved. But journalism is dead and propaganda has been in as a substitute.
I recall how the good people governing the cities all of a sudden become so certain of how powerful the protection against speeding and red light running these cameras are, and how well they'll protect the public from injury. As we see with the monies from other countries coming in to corrupt, the local corruption is based on money from the lobbyists for the red light camera folks.
Ohio has worked to outlaw them but we have this home rule law that the locals keep using to try to get cameras in action in their communities.
Years ago I left a message with a local city that was pushing their cameras and how they stop red light running, asking how they didn't protect against a speeder running a light and hitting a car in the rear killing the driver. I never got a call back from the safe director or whatever title he had been given. ********************** Cincinnati has had 3 council members caught accepting money in about 9 months. Years back the community was able to get red light cameras put on the ballot and voted it down, otherwise Cincinnati likely would be like DC is with cameras raking in the dough.

It's all about the money. Fortunately the Kentucky legislators have ignored the IIHS/Safety [non-permissible content removed] and hence we have no automated revenue generators anywhere in our fair Commonwealth.

At one time Ohio tried requiring an officer to be present for the camera's tickets to be legal.
Next Ohio required the amount of money the taxing division with the cameras earned from the cameras be cut from their state subsidies, essentially meaning they make nothing from the cameras.
Now Ohio is back to square one with the cameras being turned back on after Supreme Court decisions. If only the legislators could have gotten a statewide referendum on the ballot--I can't recall if that was attempted 15 years ago or not. And this thing called 'home rule' keeps being used to justify the ability of the local yokels to profit from the cameras.
I just boycott anything from the cities where the cameras are turned on. Don't drive through if I can avoid it. Don't shop there such as Lowes/Home Depot, etc..
Before the local newspaper dropped the emailed in comments from readers, I suggested developing a camera that could detect corrupt politicians and issue them citations. That was when the Dayton city had a Mayor, then state representative, who showed up drunk among lots of other scandals.
@imidazol97 ...I think the municipalities are hoping it’s a little too convenient to send in the fine with no points added to your license. What they didn’t plan in my case, I guess enough of us decided to fight them, it cost too much to hear the cases and not worth pushing the boundaries of using red light cameras.
It’s easy money if they can get enough people to just pay the fine without getting labor on their end involved.
Funny.....on Christmas Eve, Butler County (the county I live in) announced they were running a DUI check point from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They arrested no one. Why that was not totally predictable, escapes me.
I wonder whose bright idea that was? And, how much overtime that cost the County.
Quite a big “bah....humbug”!!!!!!!!
Never underestimate the greed and ignorance of some of our community leaders.

I think I mentioned the last time this topic went around that the city of Albany NY installed the cameras with the intention of raking in $2 million in extra revenue. What the got was exactly zero as all the money went to the camera company for contractual fees.

Corruption at the municipal govt level is always easier to get away with, it seems. I have come to the conclusion here that voters/citizens do not pay attention to municipal politics for the most part, and as a result those poltroons get away with all sorts of dubious things. We certainly see examples of that locally.

You could google something like problems with Lennox Heat Pumps. On one site with reviews they only get just over 2 stars out of 5. It looks like others have had problems too. https://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/lennox.html It sounds like yours should have almost all new parts by now.
Nice! That's exactly what I was thinking about. IIRC there was a similar case in the Seattle metro area, I think one of the northern suburbs. Of course, it only made the news as a quick blip and was out of the cycle within a week. Might have also been a case where yellow lights were shortened after camera implementation - that kind of stuff should result in elimination of both position and pension.
And don't get me started on the take received by the camera operator - alive and well on the local toll express lanes, too. I wonder how many higher ups in these companies have family members or entitled old frat bros in municipal government positions.

Speaking of classic audio systems I read that McIntosh is resurrecting the high end brand name, but this time as an audio system for the the 2021 Grand Jeep Wagoneer. The price of the McIntosh was not disclosed but a $6,000 list price is anticipated. I had never heard of this American brand before but it has a long history going back to the late 1940's. Read more at: https://www.worth.com/mcintosh-labs-car-audio-system-2021-jeep-grand-wagoneer/
McIntosh home audio gear is great stuff. Older pieces hold their value very well. The components typically have glass front panels and high build quality. I’d love to have a few pieces from them eventually.

Happy Boxing Day to those who celebrate that tradition.
Thanks! We can't even go to a store to buy Boxing Day Specials.....total lockdown in Ontario for 4 weeks beginning today. Only grocery and hardware stores allowed to open at 50% capacity. No gyms, no restaurants (take out only), no skiing, no getting together etc. Had to do it I guess, the numbers were treading upward and hospitals could get overwhelmed.
Same here in Vermont. This State has been quite good at maintaining a lowish level of Covid infections. No national policy, so it's up to each State to do whatever they want. We talked to friends in Florida, and no restrictions at all.
We went into a McDonalds for lunch in Rutland the other day and they were closed for sit down dining. Because we dared to enter the premises instead of using the drive thru we were required to sign in with name and phone number for contact tracing.
That's good that they are attempting to track people...if need be.
You’ll really be ecstatic when they start asking if you have “the proper papers.”

I think it is convert your whole home into a radio receiver and live somewhere else.
I think FL has a low cost of living in general - low taxes, lots of cheap housing, and for a long time known for low wages - so retirees or remote workers can come in and feel well off. Add in the weather, and you're a magnet.
In WA, we also have no income tax, relatively low property taxes, but some other cost of living inputs are expensive (housing especially), so it kind of evens out in terms of taxation. Some locals moan and whine about taxes, not understanding the taxes here aren't the issue.
Relatively low property taxes? You ARE kidding....right?
If you think 9000.00 a year for our 2400 sq. foot house in Issaquah is low than you are right on!
Add our ten percent sales tax and high car tabs and we are taxed pretty well I would say!
I'll tell you what, I'll pay your property taxes if you pay ours.
Probably not. A gal I know pays 1500.00 a year in South Dakota.
Still 9000.00 seems like a LOT!
She has to live in South Dakota, though.
Ha! Yes, this is very true. She's a California transplant and she claims that she loves it there!

Well. "The Guy" just left from the Lennox store that installed the unit. I discovered this morning after talking to the service lady that the outside unit would run if I reset the breaker in my electrical box. It didn't look like it had tripped.
But the outside unit tripped the breaker after about 45 seconds. Rinse. Repeated.
Just waited for the guy.
Current draw on compressor and air fan were great. When he went to add freon he found the outside metering valve went bonkers. Covered under 10-year parts warranty on all parts and under the 5-year labor warranty.
I'm so glad they found something. To be continued.

In my search for a place to move to, there are a few rules I won’t break.
One is, I won’t go to a place that has outlets in a shopping center parking lot to plug in your block heater. Or anyplace that actually needs you to have a block heater.

Positive news and good progress. Always better when they can actually locate the problem.
I've sown the seeds that I'm not content with this unit and am considering change. I even said I'd be open to replacing at a small price to a multispeed compressor premium unit. Also mentioned different brand.
A lot of the complaints about Lennox are from a period where a their evaporator coils are having copper tubes fail--becoming porous and leaking the newer freons. Otherwise the distribution is like other brands' comments I found. It's like many car brands that relied heavily on Takita brand airbags... and they failed.
I have to say the local business has been very great about stepping up during these repairs. They even got Lennox region to supply the freon when the compressor went bad and the freon was damaged and couldn't be reused. It's like a Mercedes store with free car washes and people who know every customer's name and values the customer.
I inspected my evaporator coil last night and I didn't see any copper tubes showing like on this one; so I hope it's one of the all aluminum coils which is now the standard. I suspect I would already have had a leak failure based on experiences of others posted experiences.
My leaking evaporator was replaced under warranty- a Rheem unit. Apparently it must be more efficient as well, my electrical bill has been noticeably lower since the new evaporator was installed.

When I replaced my system a few years ago (gas furnace and central air unit), they said the gains from the variable speed compressor weren't worth the extra cost. I do have a variable speed blower on the air handler.
Of course, I don't use my compressor for heat, so the math might work out better for you. IIRC, it was about $600 to "upgrade" to the variable speed compressor.
I've yet to figure out exactly what the system in the new house does. It's one giant unit with a 5 ton compressor outside, but it does have two zones that seem to run independently. There is a thermostat downstairs and in our master bedroom.
I can feel the heat running upstairs but not downstairs and the unit seems fairly quiet. Other times you can hear air rushing and it's blowing air upstairs and down. There are clearly electrically operated dampers on the unit with Honeywell controllers. It must be pretty efficient as my gas bill was the same here in 4200 square feet as my previous home that was about 1800. The heater was new in that home as well, but it was a much older home.
I'm not sure why they didn't just go with two units rather than a complex dual zone setup, but I'm sure it came down to cost.

**********************
Cincinnati has had 3 council members caught accepting money in about 9 months. Years back the community was able to get red light cameras put on the ballot and voted it down, otherwise Cincinnati likely would be like DC is with cameras raking in the dough.

And don't get me started on the take received by the camera operator - alive and well on the local toll express lanes, too. I wonder how many higher ups in these companies have family members or entitled old frat bros in municipal government positions.

One is, I won’t go to a place that has outlets in a shopping center parking lot to plug in your block heater. Or anyplace that actually needs you to have a block heater.

Of course, I don't use my compressor for heat, so the math might work out better for you. IIRC, it was about $600 to "upgrade" to the variable speed compressor.
