One of the first things I do is remove any dealer decals. This one was a bugger to get off as the car was originally sold at this dealer and I suspect it was on there from the start. A little WD 40 and patience it gave way.

Anyone remember when they would use metal dealer logos and DRILL HOLES into the trunk lids to mount them? A few years later rust would streak down from the screw holes!

I think FL has a low cost of living in general - low taxes, lots of cheap housing, and for a long time known for low wages - so retirees or remote workers can come in and feel well off. Add in the weather, and you're a magnet.

In WA, we also have no income tax, relatively low property taxes, but some other cost of living inputs are expensive (housing especially), so it kind of evens out in terms of taxation. Some locals moan and whine about taxes, not understanding the taxes here aren't the issue.

Relatively low property taxes? You ARE kidding....right?

If you think 9000.00 a year for our 2400 sq. foot house in Issaquah is low than you are right on!

Add our ten percent sales tax and high car tabs and we are taxed pretty well I would say!
I'll tell you what, I'll pay your property taxes if you pay ours.
Probably not. A gal I know pays 1500.00 a year in South Dakota.

Still 9000.00 seems like a LOT!

My son got married last year. My contribution was the rehearsal dinner and the cost of the DJ. Not sure what his mother contributed, but I suspect some of the other costs.

Have told my son on many occasions, I won’t spring for any costs for big wedding. But, if he wants, I’ll spring for two round trip plane tix to Europe, hotel fees for a week, and travel money. He’ll enjoy and remember that trip more than any wedding.
I barely remember my wedding day, it seemed to go by so fast it seems like a blur.

As he tells me, “that’s up to the female”. As I reply...”Says who?”.

Says every man who has had a long successful marriage, Happy wife, happy life.
I think I've mentioned this before, but back in 2007 we were remodeling our kitchen and my wife wanted to install a double convection oven. On another mail list I asked about the best oven brands and one guy opined that she probably didn't need a double oven and I didn't need to spend so much. I replied:

"My wife doesn't ask why I want a 300+ hp 155 mph car to drive to work, and I'm not asking her why she needs a double oven. Hell, I don't care if she gets a triple oven."

Communication is VERY important in a marriage...

Yes, and I avoided those dealers. There was one major dealer that had a large dealer logo that was a three pointed star held on by three small screws. Looked awful on large cars and overwhelming on small cars.

Yep, remember those back in the 50’s. I’m pretty sure those barbed things were made out of what was called pot metal back in those days. @isellhondas, we’re showing our age.☺️

    Turntable restoration......before pic....

I have since “buffed” the dust cover. Not perfect, but getting there.

Motor is “dead nuts” accurate speed wise. These “quartz lock” motors on direct drive turntables of the era were amazingly accurate and robust.

The isolation engineering between the platter and the motor is a marvel. They include some pretty sophisticated suspension and vibration absorption technologies. In addition, this thing is heavy, which helps with vibrations, too.

Switches are pressure sensitive but electronic. Disassembling them, cleaning and reassembling today.

The bad...some of the plinth is damaged. Still not sure how I’ll fix it as it’s veneer. Headshell is cracked, so I need a new one. If the headshell is cracked, pretty good bet the cartridge is damaged, too. Not sure how old the stylus is. So, may as well replace the whole cartridge/headshell.

Overall, not in bad shape for a 40 year old turntable. Gonna take me a week or so to finish. Headshell will probably be hard to find.

I had a Zenith stereo back in the early 70s. I was quite taken with it as it cost $250 which was quite a sum back them. I never knew it would become collectible 45 some years later.

We can't even go to a store to buy Boxing Day Specials.....total lockdown in Ontario for 4 weeks beginning today. Only grocery and hardware stores allowed to open at 50% capacity. No gyms, no restaurants (take out only), no skiing, no getting together etc.
Had to do it I guess, the numbers were treading upward and hospitals could get overwhelmed.
What’s the vaccine status in Canada? I’m not sure how that works internationally. My brother who is a respiratory therapist right on the front lines got his shot and is due for the 2nd on Jan. 5th.

I’m not sure where I fall on the pecking order but my contrarian nature makes me reluctant to get it regardless of my at-risk status as an elderly codger.

Same here in Vermont. This State has been quite good at maintaining a lowish level of Covid infections. No national policy, so it's up to each State to do whatever they want. We talked to friends in Florida, and no restrictions at all.
We went into a McDonalds for lunch in Rutland the other day and they were closed for sit down dining. Because we dared to enter the premises instead of using the drive thru we were required to sign in with name and phone number for contact tracing.

Canada is getting shipments in dribs and drabs each week. Those are divvied up and sent to provinces based upon their percentage of the total population. Then it is up to provincial health officials to determine who gets them. In the first week of availability we had 900 health care workers get it here. No idea when it will trickle down to the majority of us poor slobs but it’s probably months away.

It seems everyone is dumping on the USPS, but sometimes they go above and beyond.
Some important documents got mailed to me from Germany.
The address was missing the town and zip code.
Someone hand wrote it in and the papers arrived today.

I sent steaks as a Christmas present and I don’t know who delivered it but it got there. I sent some cards with cash inside by USPS and they got there too. Really amazing when you think about it.

As the father of an engaged male offspring, I'm going with scam. ;)

The real scam is the entire wedding industry. Conditioning girls from early age that their life would be over if they don’t have some lavish over-the-top party with white doves flying over or whatever else you read in these magazines. Doesn’t even matter the income tier, it always has to be more than makes sense and attach “wedding” to anything and you double, triple, or quadruple the price, just because you can. No wonder desperate bride’s families are hitting groom’s families for money. If 72-84 month car loans are now normal, so will be groom’s bill at the wedding. The only way to deal with this would be lower the demand, perhaps the pandemic will change the mindset and cure some bridezilla syndromes...

Sorry, it’s not “desperate brides’ families”. It’s just being more egalitarian and recognizing the fact that most people getting married are older than in generations past. I was 22 and in grad school when I got married. My daughter was 32 with an established career. Same with the groom. So people divvy up the responsibilities differently. I’ve been to many of her cohort’s weddings too. There’s a huge range, from a courthouse wedding with a local party after to a 3 day festival. I don’t think there are any set expectations. Everyone contributes what they can.

Not kidding at all. Property tax rates in WA are not particularly high. Tax obligations can be high because of insane property values, but I only have crocodile tears for many of those in such a bind. Tots and pears for their well-being.

The problem with WA taxes is that they are often regressive, but the WA tax burden isn't in the upper echelon of heavily taxed states.

We are slightly behind the U.S. in getting vaccines out. Both countries have bought millions of doses, and we have similar plans for distributing it. I'll get a vaccine shot as soon as it's available. So far almost 2 million dead in the world, 350000 Americans dead, about 15000 Canadians.....and no real issues for someone who has been vaccinated. About 1/3 of people who get covid and recover say they thought they would die from it.

I have been to a wedding that must have cost $500000.....they had a 7 piece band and someone said the flowers on each table....there were about 25 tables, someone said the flowers on each table cost about $2000. It was in a castle in NY state.......for appetizers you went to the food of your choice, Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Italian etc.

The weddings I like the most are probably the least expensive, held in a tent in the backyard. These weddings are informal, friendly, not pretentious, and real.

I like all types of weddings, although that huge one sounds pretty over the top. I guess they employed a lot of people! It’s just if you have a large extended family they won’t all fit in someone’s yard! And if people are flying in from other countries, they’re not expecting a half-afternoon ceremony and then they go home. It’s more like a big family reunion. That’s what ours was like. Our own wedding back in the day was very small and we paid for everything ourselves. I liked that too.

I would say that claiming that a state is higher or lower in taxes is hard to do because most states the tax burden varies across the state. Property, gas and sales taxes vary across a state. The tax burden I have here in the suburbs of Chicago is way higher than it would be in in some smaller town in downstate IL.

It is really hard to compare total cost of owning a home in various states because the taxes are structured in different ways. How public schools are funded is a first start. Here it's a mixture of local property taxes, sales tax, income/earnings tax in some cases, and state money from their income and sales tax. Ohio has a sales tax statewide and has an income tax, which had been reduced substantially over several years, but still is regressive in that it penalizes high incomes with a higher tax rate. There is no consideration given to different types of income such as long term capital gains like there is in the Federal tax code.

Local communities get operating money from property taxes and income earnings taxes in the case of some cities. Others have added on the regressive tax of red light cameras and speed zone cameras.

One of our more incompetent taxing units in the county has just resurrected their camera setup and raised the "penalties." I was really glad to see @graphicguy being able to back down the silly money grab on speed cameras while the media dummies still quote the city fathers saying that speed cameras and red light cameras save lives--with no proof that's valid. Sounds like election stuff. I venture into the political division that's bring back cameras occasionally and I have yet to see a police car on the road or parked at a donut shop; instead they pretend cameras will prevent aggressive driving, bad driving, and under-the-influence driving.

Further the sales taxes by the state don't tax certain unprepared edible foods, but other items are taxed. The county sales taxes are added onto that and follow the same rules. In others states instead of a 5.5% state sales tax their total tax was 10% on some types of items but no state income tax. I don't know how their schools are funded.

The State recently got internet sales items taxed from most companies delivering items into the state--Amazon was the big target for the spenders in Columbus.

Tax theorists actually call that a "progressive" tax in that those who can supposedly afford to pay more do pay more proportionatly than some poor slob. Up here in Canada govts worship the idea of progressive taxes.

We need some appliance stories. I'll submit mine: I noticed the Lennox heat pump system kept using backup heat yesterday--cold outside. (The iguanas were all falling from the trees.) I checked this morning and the outside compressor unit isn't running. No air handler fan. No compressor. No clicking. No nuthin. Grrrrr.

Will call for service tomorrow. I need to check on Lemon Law for heat pumps in Ohio. Now that this one is 4 years old it's had several major repairs. I can't wait to see what this one is. There's still a 5-year warranty on some things with this unit. I feel like I'm back in the 60s where cars lasted 60K miles and then you started expecting repairs and traded it in.

I think in WA the average rate is under 1%. But when numerous Seattle suburbs have average detached housing prices approaching 1MM, if not exceeding it, it can be a little onerous I suppose. Of course, if I was lucky enough to have that equity and was in a position to do so, I might seek more mellow pastures and let a rat race participant overpay for my old abode. There are also reductions/exemptions for senior citizens under a certain income threshold, and I think the limit is around 60K, so not poverty level.

I've seen that high tax in crumbling urban area theme apply to Chicago and Detroit, too. IIRC, TX also has high property taxes. An old friend moved from suburban Seattle to Austin, and griped that the taxes there were a bit more than on his WA house that was worth a bit more.

Regressive taxes are those that put more of a burden on lower income households (those with less disposable income). The trickle down fantasy we've embraced for virtually my entire life has almost universally been shown to be a failure, not producing the benefits claimed by supporters, while resorting in the hoarding/hiding of wealth as the socio-economic gap expands and economic mobility slows. No powerful rich nation treats the top few as generously as the US.

No tax on unprepared food here in WA, but prepared food carries the standard sales tax.

I'd like to see in-depth independent audits of those camera schemes, and the greased palms involved in their installation and operation.

I was really glad to see @graphicguy being able to back down the silly money grab on speed cameras while the media dummies still quote the city fathers saying that speed cameras and red light cameras save lives--with no proof that's valid.

@imidazol97 ...I think the municipalities are hoping it’s a little too convenient to send in the fine with no points added to your license. What they didn’t plan in my case, I guess enough of us decided to fight them, it cost too much to hear the cases and not worth pushing the boundaries of using red light cameras.

It’s easy money if they can get enough people to just pay the fine without getting labor on their end involved.

Funny.....on Christmas Eve, Butler County (the county I live in) announced they were running a DUI check point from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They arrested no one. Why that was not totally predictable, escapes me.

I wonder whose bright idea that was? And, how much overtime that cost the County.

    Quite a big “bah....humbug”!!!!!!!!

Never underestimate the greed and ignorance of some of our community leaders.

@oldfarmer50 ...GOOD Audio Turntables were the sole province of the British for much of the 60s. The U.S. dominated in the ‘50s and earlier. As the Japanese did quite a bit in the ‘70s, they noticed and started building better turntables. They dominated the category in the mid-‘70s until the CD took over (mid-late ‘80s).

Sony, Victor (JVC), Pioneer, Denon, Kenwood, Marantz took over by making high quality turntables that were better than anything coming out of the U.S. or Europe at the time.

The one I’m working on is probably from the height of Japanese turntable market. Extremely well made...high quality components and assembly.

I’ll probably have $300 invested in hard costs and 20-25 hours of my time. Not sure what it’s worth once finished.

Zenith, RCA, etc. became after thoughts. They never really even tried to compete in the midrange-high end turntable field. Some players like VPI are still in the turntable business, but they’re niche, and quite expensive.

We need some appliance stories. I'll submit mine: I noticed the Lennox heat pump system kept using backup heat yesterday--cold outside. I checked this morning and the outside compressor unit isn't running.

I'll bet its a starting capacitor.

I got called on the carpet by Kentucky's Judicial Conduct Commission for referring to court costs as legalized extortion. They also didn't like me discussing DOT paperwork violations in open court using a German accent.
