@oldfarmer50 Here's what gets me....a 2008 and a 1999 Crown Vic for $5000 miles, or would you rather get a bank loan for an extra $7000 and buy a 2014 C250 with 35000 miles on it (no scratches, no dents, no strange stains, no hand made console)? I think you will usually come out ahead when you spend more.....unless you are very good at choosing low mileage inexpensive cars. The $5000 could be $5000 down the drain completely, the C250 will be worth something for a few years. Just my way of looking at it.....and I have bought my share of cheap cars...a few good ones, a few really bad ones.
Ended up finding him a Jetta that was maybe 2 YO with 20K miles, and some warranty. Required a small loan for a couple of years, but offset by no maintenance or repairs, and getting vastly better MPG than what he had before. pretty sure on a monthly cashflow basis, the new car with loan was cheaper. Then after a few years, he still had a relatively new, lower mile Jetta that was paid off, and should last him a long time.
@explorerx4@28firefighter@tjc78 I probably shouldn't have used the C250 as the alternative....it was just that when I researched it's trade in value as $10000 I was surprised you could potentially buy a car that is like new for that price. I know those old Crown Vics are cheap to fix and pretty much trouble free........but I wouldn't trust buying one unless I knew the story behind it. Paying $5000 for those Crown Vics could be $5000 down the drain. It could be one repair after the other, and not dependable enough to get you to work.
I have had very limited funds before, but if at all possible, I would probably get something like this Sonata from Carvana https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/1705052 $11000 36000 miles, clean, a warranty. You should get 5 years out of it.....might cost $1000 more a year to own. Those Crown Vics eventually do breakdown.
I have been there and done that................paying a little more a year for something CAN cost less in the long run.
That Sonata is something I would buy. A lot of the depreciation gone out of it but plenty of life left.
That’s what I did with the kid’s 10’ Fusion 29k miles for $8150. His previous, an 05’ Sable was 11 years old 49k miles for $3500.
As our finances improved so did the price we could pay for a car. Maybe the $2k hooptie buyers are just people on their way up.
@oldfarmer50 , has your son's Fusion needed any repairs since you bought it? My son's 2010 Mercury Milan (1st cousin to the Fusion) has needed a new throttle body, an emissions valve, new rotors, new tires, brakes, battery, and recently a passenger side mirror. Going to replace the pcv valve this week. I replaced all myself, a friend helped with the brakes. Current mileage is 150,000. My son has put 50,000 miles on the car in 2 years. Hoping it lasts for at least for another 2 years without any major repairs.
A friend from my misspent street racing era now has a company that installs and repairs gravel driveways. He did a great job on mine:
Nice long driveway with a twisty but I have a suggestion. Put in concrete or blacktop and you can do a burn out to get rid of the carbon just before you garage it. Your cars will love you for that.
jmonroe
Boy, I thought I had a long driveway.
My gravel driveway is over a 1/4 mile long. In the North we have to plow snow. Now that the snow is mostly gone and I hope that plowing is over, it's time to get the gravel off of the grass. Not a pleasant task. That will take several hours over several days. I'm getting to old to try to do it all at once.
I never got the previous $600 check even though my wife got hers in the mail. I checked a few days ago on the IRS site and got the “we don’t know” message. Not good.

Then again, sometimes it’s the quacks who make real progress in medicine. Remember Dr. Barry Marshall who claimed that stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria not acid? He was called a quack for years until somebody actually bothered to test his claims. Now they give you antibiotics instead of Tums.

It's been a long time and even though I remember the story I don't recall his name. But didn't the criticism come from testing that theory on himself then reporting the results from that experiment instead of a typical clinical research study? I don't recall the "quack" label so much as the critical review of his method.
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
I had that bacteria that causes ulcers years ago: h-pylori. The two-week antibiotic treatment was sort of nasty, bad taste IIRC. Little omeprazol for a year or more and all good. I remember in the late 50s my uncle being told by his doctor to eat raw hamburger as a treatment for ulcers. I guess I can't complain about the two antibiotics in the treatment for the h-pylori I was given.

Forgot about needing a new alternator. Still, mostly minor repairs and routine upkeep. But, you remember correctly. 5 grand. Bill Collins Ford wanted to put a remanufactured engine in the car, or have it rebuilt. I replaced the throttle body.. Runs fine. But yeah, at that time, getting 2 years out of the car sounded pretty good.

Mirror whacking must be a design problem for Fords. On the kid’s car there was a “damage reported” on the CarFax. Turned out to be a mirror whack by grandma when she was pulling into the garage in Florida. We knew this because the next service entry said “passenger side mirror replaced”.

Currently the Hyundai Sonata has a score of 9.0 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 88 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

Exactly. For the $600 my wife got a paper check, my younger son got DD and my older son and I got nothing. At least we can take a credit on our taxes and get it that way.
Just seems funny that the government can send money to a million dead people but not the living.
I should have corrected one thing, the letter my wife got said she would be getting $1400, not $1200. Still, puzzling why they would only sent her the letter but give the money to me.

A used book salesman huh? Back before I met she who must be obeyed I came across a pretty good used book store a couple of towns over from where I lived at the time. Good selection of good condition used books at very good prices owned by a guy who seemed real nice. I started hanging out there and was friendly with the owner and you can read about him here.
Those stories aren't true, I never robbed any banks and didn't kill anyone....though that guy must have been the most interesting bookstore owner in history. For the record, I didn't sell "used" books, they were new books and it was for a major publisher....one owned by the same company who does Superman and Bugs Bunny.
So what you are saying is that the jury failed to convict you.

I ask you, is this any way to run a railroad?
If it's $2800, that has to be the extra $1400 ea for you and the wife. Looks like you are still missing the $600 from early January.
They send the stimulus check the same way they send your last refund. So if you file a joint return and have your refund deposited into your personal account then your personal would get both your and your wife's stimulus payments.

With its new DBX, Aston Martin becomes the latest high-end manufacturer to embrace the SUV as a way forward. With an MSRP of $200,000, 12 MPG, 542-hp, 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds and 5128-pounds that is a heavy price tag indeed. Still, I believe it probably would be more successful in a BEV format. You'd be surprised how many "dumb" doctors are out there..
Yeah and I couldn’t get into med school. Can you believe that? :@
jmonroe
If you can't get into med school then you should go to chiropractor school.
Who wants to go through life being called a quack? The only thing worse would be a used book salesman. My newish next door neighbor is a chiropractor.
jmonroe
@bwia Nice looking car but the badges make me think it is a Genesis. Ford copied the front end perfectly, they should have to pay for plagiarism. $200000 is a bit steep, I'd consider it but not sure about reliability and a dealer network. No matter how much money I had, I don't think I want an oddball car that can't be serviced within a reasonable distance. Of course if I had a chauffeur and a servant...they could take it in for me.
I know you aren't a fan of U.S. News but for me it is a fairly good place to get general information....though I would also do more research to confirm. Buying a 2010 Sonata as a used car! Rankings & Research The 2010 Hyundai Sonata's #4 ranking is based on its score within the 2010 Affordable Midsize Cars category. Currently the Hyundai Sonata has a score of 9.0 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 88 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.
I don't recall ever offering an opinion of US News and World Report before. Although it wouldn't be the first place I'd look for opinions on used cars, or dishwashers for that matter.
In any event, that article is 6 years old. Buying a 5 y-o used Hyundai is quite different than buying one that is 12 years old. They were mostly disposable cars so they age out rather quickly.
I was behind this for a little while yesterday. It's out of focus, but it says, "SENIOR DRIVER".
I didn't know this was a thing. At first I figured it was from Florida, but it has PA plates. I did not get a chance to view the driver.
I think I encountered a relative of that driver this morning. I was waiting at the light where the entrance and exit ramps for I-87 intersect with a local road. I looked across the intersection and I see a car waiting for the light pointing in the wrong direction. Evidently this woman was driving the wrong way on the interstate so she was exiting on the entrance ramp. This ramp is part of an interchange with multiple highways and arterials so she must have been driving the wrong way for miles to end up where she was.

I must have done the same with another relative. Today when I went to get my Covid shot I arrived at the clinic about 20 minutes too early. They were quite explicit in the notice of appointment to say they didn't want you to come inside more than 5 minutes before your appointed time, so I sat in the car in the parking lot listening to music for a while. Parked next to me was a Dodge minivan. I saw this very old fellow come out of the adjacent drug store using a wheeled walker. He trundles along quite slowly with the 3 bags of chips he bought in the bin of the walker. I lost sight of him after he went past my car. A few minutes later the alarm on the minivan next to me started sounding off. I look around and see him with the liftgate open trying to stow all his stuff. I dunno if he was hard of hearing and didn't notice the alarm and flashing lights, or if he just didn't care. But it went on for at least 5 minutes before he finally made his way to the drivers door and unlocked it at which point it shut off. Not somebody I would want to encounter in traffic.
Speaking of the DBX and its 12 mpg, it is worse than I thought. Doing a little back of the envelope calculation it is equivalent to 3 MPG riding a horse from Philadelphia to Boston in 1776.
Not exactly an apples to apples comparison but considering it took 8.5 days to cover a distance of 308 miles on horseback averaging 12 hours a day, that translates into 3 mph. Some sources indicate that it took as little as 3 days in 1776 to make that 308 mile trip. If true, that horse would be traveling at a phenomenal pace of 8 mph but it would be a dead horse.
I never got the previous $600 check even though my wife got hers in the mail. I checked a few days ago on the IRS site and got the “we don’t know” message. Not good.

A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
I really need more garage space, or at least a side parking area, to collect a few more cars. Wife noticed there was a little extra money in the checking account so said we should do something with it. She suggested paying down the mortgage. I said could just buy a car. Compromised on sending it over to Vanguard and forgetting about it.

3 days is possible but that's really pushing the horse. You should get 30 miles a day from a horse but can get 50 or more miles from a horse for a short period of time.
Since we are on this topic there is a town in Illinois called Half Day. It got its name due to it being a half day away from Chicago by horse, it's about 25 miles as the crow flies.

Got my first shot of AstraZeneca Covid vaccine today. Painless at the time and still no side effects I can detect.
Isn’t that the wannabe vaccine? Why don’t you guys up there get the real stuff?
jmonroe
Yeh, they should give AstraZeneca to wannabe car owners like Genesis owners. Pfizer and Moderna go to the real car owners. @ab348 In Ontario over 75s can get an appointment starting Monday - for the good stuff. Drugstores start booking over 60s on Monday - for Astrazeneca. If my Pfizer or Moderna (age 73) is going to take a few weeks I'll have to settle for the wannabe....74% protection vs. 92%.
@jipster , do the mirrors fold on the Fusion or are they fixed? Impressions on the Accord so far?
The mirrors fold forward, unfortunately not backwards as well. They are heated mirrors. Ordered one at Amazon for $44. Not difficult to install. 5 screws on the door panel, then pop it off. 3 bolts hold the mirror on.
The Accord has met all expectations. Best handling vehicle I've ever owned. Trade off is not the quietest or a cushy ride. On interstate,, able to avoid a huge semitruck retread that had peeled off a tire, without crashing. Averaging 34.3 mpg.
Only glitch is the collision mitigation system. Unexpectedly slammed on the brakes a couple of times as I was exiting the interstate. One was a bit of a jolt. The other minor. Maybe something to do with the thick solid painted lines. Not uncommon from what I've read. Just have to use your turn signals for everything, or turn that particular safety system off, which I don't want to do.
I did smell what I thought to be gasoline on the dipstick when I was checking the oil level. I understood that may be a problem with direct injection engines. The oil level was normal. I've done 2 oil changes. One at 5k miles and the next at 11k miles. Anyhow, Honda World looked at it. Said it was fine. Said no other complaints. I asked twice as there were some complaints on the Honda Accord forum. I have a pretty good warranty, so not going to worry about it.
Even if I had the money, hard no. Looks/profile that IMO are now generic (save for the brand identity front end), mileage barely better than a G550 for a third more MSRP - I can't imagine it selling to more than brand loyalists or overmonied undertaxed trust fund/entertainment/trophy spouse types. But if it keeps the brand alive...I guess.
It helps that we haven't spent any money since the beginning of the year on home improvements. That tends to take care of any spare cash real quick! Though I am eying a new family room TV and I think we need a gas grill this year. The old one, the burners seem to be breaking apart.
Went to Mecum AA yesterday. Some nice cars. My neighbor was there and bought a ‘68 Camaro for for $92k!
That’s a nice appreciation. I saw that when new that Camaro would MSRP as high as $3,5XX. My second new car was a 1968 Olds Delta 88 Custom 2 door hardtop with the 455 engine. The MSRP for that beauty was $4,5XX. Something tells me it wouldn’t fetch nearly as much as that Camaro. That Olds was on the high side in it’s day and was definitely not a wannabe.

finally put together the new tool I got for Christmas and tried it out. A compact, battery powered chain saw. Little chain, I think the reach might be 6" or so. Should go measure it. I was not expecting much looking at it, or reading the horribly translated instructions. But I got it put together and it seemed OK.
actually did a pretty good job. Much easier on smaller limbs and scrawny trees than using the hand saw I used before. Plus, so compact that you could use it at any angle and get into tight spaces. As long as you don't get greedy and go after too big a trunk! The few bigger scrap trees the wife wants gone will have to wait until next week to see if I work up the ambition to get out and figure out how to use the full sized gas model. That actually scares me a bit! But at least I got all the smaller stuff out of the way so I can easily get at them. Hopefully I don't drop one and take out a section of fence. That would be a downer.

Your son got 50k out of a $5,000 car (if I remember correctly)? That’s something to be proud of. Everything you mention is just routine repairs that you’d expect on any car that mileage.
What really impresses me is that he got that much use out of an engine that some “expert” told you had major timing issues.
