Having all those CarPlay options would seem to make the Genesis implementation more complex, not less. What do you use all that stuff for? I have CarPlay on the ATS but have only used it once, to see if it worked. It did, but I found it rather cumbersome and not particularly useful to me.
On the iPhone, so long as you have an internet connection using CarPlay, you can use Siri to navigate through everything including sending texts, responding to texts, make phone calls, dictate emails and respond to emails, select each song on your music library that you want to play and put it in a queue, etc., and bypass the car’s system. It works separately from the car’s system. All I do is say “Hey Siri” and Siri operates everything I command Siri to do. It takes some time and practice to master it.
I do not answer or send emails or texts while I am driving. But Siri announces when I have new emails or texts when using CarPlay and asks you if you want Siri to read the messages or texts to you and whether you want to respond - which Siri will do for you by dictating a response. Siri asks if you want to hear the dictated message or response and even asks if you want to send it.
Quite sophisticated and all accomplished without using the car’s interface (voice command) system - but rather using CarPlay to manage interactions.

I have never found voice commands or Siri to work reliably, so I never use it.
You make a good argument as well as a critical point. If I had difficulties with CarPlay I would not use it - which is what I did for years when driving Mercedes vehicles! 🤓

They actually might have caught wind of the Dept. of Insurance complaint; that'll get a reaction. Something probably like "how about we come up $300" to fix the discrepancy with your auction value?" Not mentioning they should pay more then that though.
I told him that I was filing a complaint with the state board of insurance and reminded him that I had asked for Monroney labels for the comps and that he had not sent any. I also reminded him that I had provided Manheim auction data proving that they were not even offering auction value for my Q7 (thanks to @qbrozen )
The agent was cc’d and I told the agent that I would be looking for a different insurance company too.
The voice recognition works great in my 2er as well as the wife's X1; the Mini's system is less adept. When I worked at BMW I found that even the most fervent acolytes of the Church of St. Jobs usually preferred to use the factory navigation system as opposed to CarPlay. That said, I'm a big fan of Siri Eyes Free; it's very convenient to be able to ask Siri to read new messages at a push of the VR button.

The good news- Liberty Mutual finally spoke to the bus driver and has accepted 100% liability.

Did you include in the letter that when depreciation is high the Insurance companies are quick to say "all you get is true market value!" However, when depreciation is low (or non-existent), suddenly the market value is meaningless.
I find the hypocrisy of insurance communications to be outlandish. It's like they have no real rules.
Reminds me of a Diminished Value delay tactic used. I think @snakeweasel defended the practice of saying that you don't incur the loss until you sell, and if you don't' sell for years you get an unjustified windfall bonus from a DV claim.
Of course, that excuse is invalid, illogical, and just a delay tactic, for if you tell the insurance company to sign on the dotted line that you will sell the car within 30 days for whatever XXX value you can get, and then they'll IMMEDIATELY pay you the true market value of an unblemished equivalent car less what you sell it for, they will not sign on the dotted line.
What they will do is revert to some other invalid excuse to not pay the claim once you check that box off the list. It's just a delay tactic; selling it won't stop them from lowballing/refusing a DV claim. I could see them accusing you of "giving it away" or some other nonsense.
As I've said before, a DV loss is immediate, and incurred the second your car is wrecked. Before collision you had an asset of XX value, after the collision your asset is worth no more than YY value. The difference should be immediately compensated.
After all this run around I would just send my estimated loss to the owner of the bus with a note saying that this was the amount you are suing for since their insurance company is not acting in good faith. Might spur some change of heart.

I seriously doubt that would do any good. The owner of the bus is represented by his insurance company, and the insurance company lawyers. His insurance company will just tell him to sit tight, they will take care of everything. And most likely they will take care of it before it goes to court, one way or another. Which doesn't mean they won't drag it out for years first before finally settling.
The last time I was in a court room being considered for jury duty, it was that kind of case, an auto accident with injury liability. Neither side wanted me on the jury, and I was quite happy to go home.
Seems ridiculous that they won't pay you what it's worth. It was their fault, so they need to pay you what this exact vehicle was worth at the time with all the options it had. Act in good faith as you've given them ample opportunity to do just that. The time has come though to get this done, be happy that no one was seriously hurt and let you guys get on with your lives! End of story...pay for all the damages and maybe a little extra for all this nonsense going on now. You folks have been very patient which speaks volumes for your character. But, the time has come to just do the right thing here!

I guess we are commenting on a July 9th post. I know the SIL bought a used Rogue (don't ask????? ) that cost $24000. He got run off the road by a truck - he says, but he probably did it himself - and the car was a write off. This happened 4 months after he bought it. I don't talk to him but I hear he is really upset because he paid $24000 and they will only give him $22000. In this case, they probably gave him the generous wholesale/trade-in price, but I am not going to waste my time explaining it....let him stew about it.
MJFloyd1......are you saying they are offering $300 under auction or wholesale price? I suppose they can try, and it might be hard to fight it....but, they might just be testing to see if they can get away with it.
I remember when we were all working on the Volkswagen TDI buyback. I was driving around in a 2013 Passat TDI which was going to bring me a $5k profit (turned out to be over $7k). Some idiot ran a stop sign right in front of me, luckily I saw him, anticipated his insanity and was able to miss him. All I could think about was $5k going up in a puff of smoke as there was no way the insurance company was going to pay me what I was anticipating from VW on the buyback.
It all worked out in the end, but it made me nervous, I can tell you that. I was trying to figure out if there was some way to buy insurance for the extra added value in that Passat TDI, but of course there wasn't.
I love CarPlay, works great for Pandora, Waze, etc
As I've noted before I seem allergic to nav apps and since I seldom have need to use them, I don't have much repetition that would help me to get used to their generally confusing commands.
I don't know why you'd need a jewelry app in your car unless you're in that business.

Even though I have lived down here in Southeast Florida for 21 years now, I still frequently (two or three times a month) use my car’s GPS system to navigate using step-by-step directions to get to a destination less than 5 miles away - specifically a new doctor referral or a store or a restaurant.
In the Genesis G90, I have the option of using the internal GPS system or the Genesis Connect system which uses an external source with step-by-step instructions with instant traffic notifications for re-routing. I have used the Connective Services for destinations a few times and the rerouting for traffic congestion or traffic accidents was very helpful.
I’ve been seriously considering having a professional apply one of those ceramic coatings to my car’s exterior paint because my car is always parked outside in the strong summer sun and other exposed elements including aerial bombardments with resulting “splats” of turds. Any suggestions as to recommendations vis-a-vis brands or dealers?

You would have been fine in the TDI if you had gotten hit - as long as it ran and drove. I remember people bringing wrecked cars in and just collecting the repair check and also the full amount for the buyback. Some even brought stripped vehicles in for the buyback and then sold all the parts. Crazy.

You should have tried to get on that jury. You could have learned some lawyerly tricks.

You could be right. Insurance companies try all sorts of trickery. Years ago I got hurt at work and needed surgery on my arm. 100% worker’s compensation which requires total payment of medical and lost income by law.
After telling me my surgery was all approved and not to worry they started questioning how the injury happened and refused to pay the doctor (illegal). Months later they went through a farce of an appeal hearing before paying what they were legally required to do. It was then that I learned that this was a typical tactic used by insurance companies to delay payment so they could earn a few more pennies on their investments.
I wasn’t asking for any monetary settlement for the injury or any residual disability but if that situation ever occurred again I would certainly get a lawyer and sue their greedy butts to hell and back.

Speaking of annoyances with in-car assistant systems such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, I am breaving a sigh of relief surfing the net ad free. Frustrated and often interrupted by the many ads and pop ups on YouTube and other popular websites I decided to download and install a free ad blocker.
I chose one that said it has the ability to block unwanted ads and pop-ups instantly, for faster web browsing. And it does.. . I have been using it for two days free but today I got a solicitation to upgrade to a fee based professional version that block 100% of ads and popups. The free version works for me, so no need to upgrade.

In the real world, we must remember that nothing is really free - even the air we breathe costs us money in order to ensure cleaner air in the form of higher prices for products from companies that pay fees and penalties for polluting or cleaning the air from production pollutants.
In the end, we (the consumer) pay for everything! 🤓😤
Just received a tax collection notice from the IRS on my 2019 return for $1,080.41, which represents $884.02 for late filing and $117.87 for interest and penalty. Bummer!
I believe I have a good enough excuse since I was stuck in the Caribbean for 9 months because of Covid-19 restrictions. Any suggestions on how I should proceed? I don't want to go to jail.

There is a downside to using an adblocker. Many sites which depend on advertising revenue will block your access to their site if you are using an adblocker. I often pursue things on the internet, following one reference to another to another, and almost inevitably I will hit either a paywall or a site that won't let me read because of the adblocker.
To get around the adblocker problem, I use the adblocker on Chrome and not on Microsoft Edge. The paywall problem, that's not so easy to get around.

All kidding aside, just because you were in the Caribbean should not have prevented you from filing electronically with a charge to your checking account or debit card, I would think. That would be the IRS’s response. Or use the snail mail to file and to get proper forms.

Ah, jail ain’t so bad. These days, they have weight rooms, free HBO and you can get a date every night without even asking.
Seriously, I’d just write them and explain your situation. Covid disrupted a lot of things so they may forgive at least any late penalties. Did you ask for a filing extension?

farmer, even if you request the automatic extension, you still have to pay what you expect to owe. Not sure what kind of wiggle room they give you if you are a bit off though. so when in doubt, file the extension form and send them a bunch of money. once you get the final filing down they will send it back if you are over.

Yeah, maybe.
Our CPA filed an extension for both the wife and I, and our stepdaughter, as she couldn't get the forms complete by the deadline. You can file the extension with an estimated payment of $0, which she did for all of us. Turns out the wife and I are getting a refund, while the daughter owed. We got a letter and statement from the IRS with the balance due for the kid, which we promptly paid (not a lot of money).
However, our return has not yet been processed - checked with the CPA on this and was told the IRS is months behind in getting returns processed, and to be patient.
Getting hold of someone at the IRS is virtually impossible now - I think only 10% of calls (or less) are getting through to an actual human.

I learned a lot when the 2015 E350 was crushed and became a write-off, and the insurance company tried to replace my car with one that didn't have all the features, even though I paid for full replacement insurance. What I learned is stonewalling is a common practice and adjusters who can save the company money get promoted and/or bonuses. When dealing with an insurance company keep that in mind.

Bwia, I am sure what you said is true but I doubt the IRS will be sympathetic. Late is late and they aren't going to believe everyone's story, because there are a lot of people who will have all kind of excuses. Is there really a separate fee for late filing and then another one for interest? It sounds like the $884.02 was what you would have owed and the $117.87 is the interest on that amount.
You never know unless you try, but I would be surprised if they give in. Sorry.
I had good experiences with the IRS. Not so much with SSA

The IRS still owes my family a good chunk of change. Been 1.5 years now and my parents last tax return still says "Pending." Nobody answers the phones and I can't make an appointment. So there is NO way for me to talk to anyone about this.

The IRS is underfunded and understaffed, to a great degree. The reasons for this are political, so we had best not discuss it here.
The SSA is ... how should I put this? Rather ridiculous in the way they operate. It is almost comical in some ways. The IRS is at least logical, they may be slow, they may be hard to deal with, but in the end the numbers will add up and make some kind of sense. Not so much with the SSA.

As I've said before, a DV loss is immediate, and incurred the second your car is wrecked. Before collision you had an asset of XX value, after the collision your asset is worth no more than YY value. The difference should be immediately compensated.
While the loss is immediate and incurred at the time of the accident it's not realized until the asset is disposed of. Until the asset is disposed of you do not have a true loss in value. Case in point, many many years ago I had an accident in my car that only had around 50K miles. Of course there was a loss in the value of the car due to the accident, but I drove it another 150K + miles and basically junked the car as all the value was gone. At this point the accident had no effect on what I got for the car, so while I did incur a loss I never realized any loss.
Of course I would have realized a loss if I sold the car right after the accident, If I would have sold it at 100K miles I would have incurred a loss but not as much if I would have sold it right after the accident. The longer I kept it the smaller my realized loss got until it vanished.
If I were keeping the books on a company that had a company car in an accident I would not write off the loss until the vehicle was sold and I had some documentation on what the car would have been worth.
__________
The loss is that you can't sell your asset for what it was worth prior to the collision. Semantics aside, that's the reality. That loss has to be compensated.
The reality is that your asset has been repaired and likely to a condition where the cars performance is the same as prior to the collision. At this point you are no worse off than prior to the collision. You only have a loss when you go to sell the vehicle and until then any valuation on the amount is strictly guesswork and dependent on multiple variables.
It's the same as when someone buys their own "salvaged" vehicle back from the insurance company. You don't get docked if your salvaged vehicle gives you reliable performance and doesn't happen to kill you for 10 years vs being a lemon or fatality waiting to happen. Why should you be docked for keeping the car or living?

Mine got turned around and refund paid pretty quickly. As long as the computer doesn't flag anything, it is all automated and no human ever touches it.
I expect that if you mail paper in, it could take a long time before somebody gets around to opening up the envelope and scanning it in. Same if it gets spit out for review or audit (assume that goes in some person's overloaded queue).
Tax software and Efile is really convenient stuff!

My IRS return is in its 8th week after date of receipt by IRS in Fresno. Waiting.

You make a good argument as well as a critical point. If I had difficulties with CarPlay I would not use it - which is what I did for years when driving Mercedes vehicles! 🤓

I already filed the complaint electronically
I love CarPlay, works great for Pandora, Waze, etc

That said, I'm a big fan of Siri Eyes Free; it's very convenient to be able to ask Siri to read new messages at a push of the VR button.

The last time I was in a court room being considered for jury duty, it was that kind of case, an auto accident with injury liability. Neither side wanted me on the jury, and I was quite happy to go home.

I know the SIL bought a used Rogue (don't ask?????
He got run off the road by a truck - he says, but he probably did it himself - and the car was a write off. This happened 4 months after he bought it.
I don't talk to him but I hear he is really upset because he paid $24000 and they will only give him $22000.
In this case, they probably gave him the generous wholesale/trade-in price, but I am not going to waste my time explaining it....let him stew about it.

Yes. They are $300 under auction value at present
It all worked out in the end, but it made me nervous, I can tell you that. I was trying to figure out if there was some way to buy insurance for the extra added value in that Passat TDI, but of course there wasn't.
I don't know why you'd need a jewelry app in your car unless you're in that business.

Now that’s funny, ab348!🤪😜
I wonder if anyone else saw the humor in your comment?
What would be even more hilarious would be that you really meant to question a jewelry store App in a car! 🤪😜🤓

The Taxman cometh.
To get around the adblocker problem, I use the adblocker on Chrome and not on Microsoft Edge. The paywall problem, that's not so easy to get around.
Pay the IRS what you owe them or don’t pay them and we’ll see you on visiting days.🤪😜
All kidding aside, just because you were in the Caribbean should not have prevented you from filing electronically with a charge to your checking account or debit card, I would think. That would be the IRS’s response. Or use the snail mail to file and to get proper forms.

Seriously, I’d just write them and explain your situation. Covid disrupted a lot of things so they may forgive at least any late penalties. Did you ask for a filing extension?

No it was St. Lucia. I tried to file online but I had problems with access and the latter part of my trip I became Iill with Myeloma. I'm still in chemo treatment for the illness so i'm hoping the IRS will be considerate and understanding .
Maybe if you offer to help them land a big fish(jmonroe), they'll go easy on you.

What I learned is stonewalling is a common practice and adjusters who can save the company money get promoted and/or bonuses. When dealing with an insurance company keep that in mind.

Is there really a separate fee for late filing and then another one for interest? It sounds like the $884.02 was what you would have owed and the $117.87 is the interest on that amount.
You never know unless you try, but I would be surprised if they give in. Sorry.

When I became my mother's guardian, she hadn't filed taxes in four years. Plus, no records.
The IRS was very accommodating, and waived all penalties and interest. Plus, provided me all of the income records they had for her.
I worked on the oldest return first, and sent one in about every month.
@bwia If you need someone to be your guardian, just let me know.

The SSA is ... how should I put this? Rather ridiculous in the way they operate. It is almost comical in some ways. The IRS is at least logical, they may be slow, they may be hard to deal with, but in the end the numbers will add up and make some kind of sense. Not so much with the SSA.

I expect that if you mail paper in, it could take a long time before somebody gets around to opening up the envelope and scanning it in. Same if it gets spit out for review or audit (assume that goes in some person's overloaded queue).
