Another BIG boost to the EV movement.

GM plans to Suck Lithium from the Salton Sea to beef up Lithium Battery production. The process will have a lower environmental impact than traditional lithium mining.
We all know that lithium is needed to produce EV batteries, and that there aren't too many places in the world to mine it. But GM now has a plan to extract it from the Salton Sea in California. Here's how this process is supposed to work.

GM just announced that it became the first investor in a project run by Controlled Thermal Resources. CTR will pump hot, salty water from deep below the Salton Sea and extract the lithium from it, along with clean thermo energy at the same time. Cleaner water goes back into the Salton Sea and the ground beneath it. It’s a win-win. You might even add another win in there when you consider the California Energy Commission’s estimate that the Salton Sea area could produce 600,000 tons of lithium per year, which is amazing since the entire world’s industry produced a mere 85,000 tons of lithium in all of 2019. Good for GM. That should put a dent in the Chinese monopoly which was a big concern of mine.

I used to live a few miles from the Salton Sea. They are continually extracting minerals from that “sea”, which is really a misnomer. It is not very wide and is only about 30 miles long - more of a lake than a sea. 🤪🤪

    More a mistake than a lake. :s

I love state government; A couple of months ago I tried to get raises for my staff(not for me) and was essentially told that the cupboard was bare. Now our Governor announces that Kentucky's General Fund ended the fiscal year with a $1.1 billion surplus.

Just got off the phone with my grandson (the 20 year old pitcher on a scholarship to UCSB). He hurt his arm throwing again so he had the Tommy John surgery done at Eisenhower Medical Center this past week by the same surgeon who does the White Sox. He is home recuperating now. He told me it would take 12-18 months for a complete recovery with an 85% chance he’ll be stronger than ever. Of course there is a 15% chance he’ll never recover.

I asked him about his scholarship and he said the university is going to honor it since he had signed an agreement with them. I don’t know exactly how that works, but I know my son is on top of that stuff. Insurance covered everything except for $3000.

The only thing that’s worrying him is that he can’t take notes in class because he is right-handed. I suggested recording the lectures and making an effort to buddy up with some classmates to share their notes and to join in on study groups. The college is going to help him out with that.

This is just an example of how precarious professional and collegiate athletics are - you have to be darn lucky to avoid career ending injuries. I pray to God he’ll recover. He is concentrating more now on his plan B which is the study of kinesiology which this particular university is known for.

While my son was at The Ohio State University, many of his professors videotaped each class. And some had videotape of previous classes since they kept the same day-by-day pace.

So if my son had to miss classes going for interviews or something related to his activities with the Student Government, it was easy to catch up or keep on online from afar. I hope your grandson will find that some of his are available on video. I also recall my son talking about daily class outlines on the internet available for some classes when he had to miss class.

But back to OSU, I remember that I was stunned in son's Freshman orientation at how each student position in one lecture hall was actually wired with ethernet for the student's laptops. Of course WiFi was probably in the others just like in all the dorm rooms.

Depends on how they have titled themselves. "The" is part of the name. It has led to lots
of comments off and on. My guess is that it was done to make clear the difference between
Ohio University and Ohio State University. Some folks have had lots of "fun" talking about
    the "The."

Some of the fun from the quality campus newspaper at The Ohio State University.

When I went to law school I had a Professor Ham; he was an excellent prof and years before an OCD student had attended and taken comprehensive notes in all of Hamm's classes. These notes became known as Ham-O-Grams and they relieved countless students of the chore of note taking. I took a business law class that had a prerequisite course that I hadn't taken and I still scored a "B" without a lot of effort- thanks to my trusty Ham-O-Gram...

Is he at a teaching institution where he would be the chairman of the department of cardiology or is he at a non-teaching hospital where he is chief of cardiology? Those are completely different things.

Chiefs of departments at non-teaching hospitals mainly deal with issues within the department- people who don’t want to play by the rules (not dictating reports or not signing charts), people causing conflicts etc. I’ve done that for 8 years and it is a real headache. No pay and more trouble than it is worth. Some see it as a stepping stone to being chief of staff.

We had a guy in our group that caused all sorts of trouble and a local small hospital was not going to renew his privileges if he applied. We have a rule that you have to cover call at all facilities covered so it was a problem. If he applied and was denied privileges then it is reportable to the provider national data bank. He resigned and now teaches at The Ohio State Anesthesia department. How ironic.

Some get to deal with fun things like this - really just involved in the talks because it is IU Health’s issue

I thought "The" was just a way to spot invaders from California when they talk about local roads "The 405", "The 5", etc).

Regarding the "The" thing something about protesting too much comes to mind.
