CPAP update ... got a phone call from the device provider.
Turns out I will be getting a new CPAP machine, whereas before I had an APAP system.
What's the difference? A is for Automated, meaning it adjusts the flow of air into the mask during the night.
In other words, I'm being downgraded.
However, the delivery time for the new system is 6-8 weeks, not 6 months, so I'm OK with that.
Over $500 to purchase, all in.
If your doctor believes you to have sleep apnea, I recommend getting a CPAP. It's amazing how much better you'll sleep with use. Yes, it takes some time to adjust to, but after a week or two it was not a big deal.
I've been using one for 10 or 15 years now, and the few times where I haven't had it were miserable.
FYI, there are two types of apnea - physical and mental. I, lucky for me, have both.
I agree 100% with your observations. As much as I hate the mask I won’t sleep without it. I’ve tried once or twice and between my wife elbowing me and telling me to stop snoring or holding my breath and the poor sleep I get without it anyway I’m resigned to its use.

O.k. Feeling a little better. The HVAC guy came out this morning. Said it would be at least $8,000....KA-CHING! Has to replace the old 10 seer unit with the minimum 14 seer unit. Replace copper lines, interior coils, filter box...as another poster had said. Said something about drywall, which I don't think is correct. Mrs Jip gave me the report. It's a clear shot from basement a/c and furnace to outside. Runs thru a rectangular chute in the ceiling. So not sure why they'd need to do anything with drywall.
This company installs York and Trane systems. I told the company rep I preferred Trane. He said they had been licensed York installers for decades,, just became Trane installers 3 years ago. But in speaking to Mrs, Jip said York is better because it has a better warranty. So, any opinions on which is better....York or Trane?
Also, we could move up to a more efficient or 2 stage system, but we'd have to pay for the price difference. They also suggested utraviolet light for cleaning the air? Never heard of that.
Is it a gas furnace? If so, I'd get them to quote the whole thing. The big advantage we got was variable speed blower on the furnace (even though the A/C unit is single stage). We can't even hear it run, any more.
The direct vent pipes are bigger than on your old one. That might have something to do with drywall? I know they had to drill a bigger hole through my foundation to accommodate them.

I would go with Trane or American Standard, which is essentially a Trane, made by the same company. According to CR York does not have a good repair record after it ages. We have an American Standard Silver Series SEER 16 with the variable speed gas heat and have been very happy with it.

In my experience, the quality of the installer and the after-sale service they provide outweighs the reputation of the brand of the HVAC. UV light purifier? I wouldn't; you'll still need a filter.

I still don’t see why it’s not the neighbor’s responsibility to pay for it. If my car rolls out into the street and hits a parked car it would certainly be my fault. Why does someone’s chimney get a pass? If the chimney fell inward and damaged the guy’s house his insurance would cover the additional damage, why not your property?
Can’t you at least get your deductible reimbursed?
I asked my agent that question. She said the wind caused the chimney to fall. The wind caused the property damage, not the chimney. I can see both sides though.
Our house was built in 1974 and last year the chimney needed some extensive tuckpointing. If you don't take care of problems like that the chimney can crack and fall.

When I had my gas furnace put in in ‘06 I got it in my head that I wanted it to have an electronic air cleaner (not UV, but the electrostatic kind with plates), so I had them add that. I came to hate it because it was constantly popping and you could hear that in certain parts of the house. Plus you had to clean the thing every year anyway which was a pain. A couple of years ago I noticed I wasn’t hearing the popping any longer, investigated, and discovered it had crapped out. Rather than getting it fixed (if it even could) I just bought a couple of filters that are the same size as the plate units and those seem to work well.
I now find myself wondering how much life the furnace has left in it. It’s a Tempstar high efficiency one and I have never had a problem with it but it being in its 16th year I am wondering.

The furnace can last a really long time. It's usually the central A/C unit that goes first.
Our A/C made it 18 years. Decided to replace the furnace at the same time.

I still can’t see it. If the wind blew down the neighbor’s whole house and it fell on your house and knocked it down too, would the neighbor’s insurance pay for his house but not yours? And if you had no insurance would you just get to sleep in the rubble?
I’m sure there’s a legal justification that I’m not seeing but it just seems unfair.

Sign of the times, earlier today after returning the CR-V to mom I turned onto the street that leads to our neighborhood. Lined up to turn onto the street that I had turned from were 15 various SUVs, black, silver, white. Not a sedan in sight, other than the one I was driving. Continuing down the street oncoming another 3 SUVs, then 2 pick up trucks and finally a Corolla!

The way most people avoid color on their cars is quite puzzling. I was thinking that the new iPhones that come in red and green seem quite popular, so maybe that would lead to a renaissance in car colors, but it hasn't happened yet.
Tornado comes through... Will they check to see if the tornado actually hit your house, or if you just got in the way of the neighbor's house blowing by?

@jipster I think you mentioned an ultra violet light. It is a small light bulb that is supposed to kill bacteria or something. We didn't have any problems with our Florida furnace, but during the annual inspection our excellent service man said the ultra violet light wasn't working....he asked if we wanted to replace it....and he rolled his eyes. I took that to mean don't bother, so I didn't and he seemed to think that was the right decision to make. That was before covid, but I don't think ultra-violet lights kill covid anyway.
I still don't get the concept....a neighbors chimney falls on your home and his insurance doesn't pay for it. It is an act of God or something? I thought the neighbor bought a policy to protect him from having to pay when something goes wrong....on his property - like for example when a piece of his house falls off and destroys someone else's air conditioner unit.
We watched one "Better Call Saul" on Netflix. The concept seems good but it's not quite good enough to watch more....but I really like his car. He is a very unsuccessful lawyer, and he tries to meet with potential clients by not letting them see his awful office or his car;
Tornado comes through... Will they check to see if the tornado actually hit your house, or if you just got in the way of the neighbor's house blowing by?

I haven’t watched it yet, but Saul was Walt’s lawyer in BB. The Better Call Saul series is all about who Saul was before getting involved with Walt.
I really want to watch the series, but the wife hated BB (didn’t finish it) so no way she will watch it with me

I felt the same way about BB. Tried to watch it but the people were so vile it turned me off, so I turned it off. So this spin-off series has zero appeal for me.

It has a very strong cult-like following though.
It’s one of the polarizing series. Starts off a little slow and then builds and builds through the seasons. The use of symbols and colors throughout the series is unmatched and the acting was spot on
IMO the second best series of all time only beaten by the Sopranos.
Some nice lines in the 2023 G90 - in comparison to my 2021 it has some nice improvements. Major difference is the pricing! Mine MSRP’d for $74950 and I paid $$69,990+++. The 2023 with the V6 will be close to $80,000 sticker and they are selling for $2000 over sticker due to shortages.
It’s a great automobile with almost no options. Mine had 2 options - wire wheels-lookalike and $350 extra for the Gold Coast Silver metallic paint. I just turned 5600 miles on it at 13 months old. I have no plans to buy a new car - especially considering what I would have to pay.
It’s the only car I know of that comes standard with every conceivable safety feature and things like heads-up display, autonomous cruise with self steering, cameras on all 4 sides of the car, leather, and an audio system (lexicon) with an external amplifier in the trunk. Not to mention a 5-year bumper-to-bumper warranty (10 year engine and drivetrain warranty), 3-year complimentary maintenance including wiper blades, alignments, brake discs and pads, etc.
My dealer just opened one of the first stand-alone Genesis dealerships in the nation which is stupendous. They pick up your car for service and give you a G90 or G80 as a loaner. Best car I have ever owned - even better than the S Class Mercedes I had for 3 years.
Tornado comes through... Will they check to see if the tornado actually hit your house, or if you just got in the way of the neighbor's house blowing by?
And if your house drops on the wicked witch of the west, are you liable?
Depends on the weather and also where the wicked witch of the west is standing when the afore mentioned house crashes down on her. Also depends if the house was in poor condition and the witch sent a certified letter to the homeowner prior to the incident…
I just started CPAP therapy. I have to say…. While it’s working I absolutely despise the mask. I’m truly thinking surgery is the answer. I’m sure losing weight wouldn’t hurt either.
I happened to see a commercial yesterday for Inspire, a device like a pacemaker they implant to replace the mask? Anyone ever heard of that? Bueller?
If I had sleep apnea I would talk to an ENT for a consult about it. I have heard of good results from it.
The Inspire is an interesting device. You turn it on and it provides an electrical stimulation to your tongue which causes your tongue to move forward (anteriorly) to open up your airway. The device is $30,000 IIRC.
You have to have a “drug induced sleep endoscopy “ to see if you are a candidate for it. You get a protofol infusion until you start to snore and the ENT looks through your nose with an endoscope to evaluate your airway. (Not that I’ve done one recently…)
There are also more simple devices that are mouthpieces that have adjustable bands that move your jaw and tongue forward that also open your airway (Panthera). Those are about $1200 (they also include a sleep study) but I do not think it is covered by insurance.
Some devices work better for some while other devices work better for others so YMMV.
One interior wall was rotted, but it was held on with about 10 nails, not screws. May not have blown down if it was screwed in.
Still sounds like negligence to me, but if it is considered an Act of God and won’t affect your rates I guess it doesn’t make any difference. But I don’t trust insurance companies.
Acts of God can affect your rates. Using the actual payouts they will use a more complex math formula to come up with a modifier to adjust your rates by experience. If you don't have very many claims or it's been a while since you made a claim it usually won't affect your rates by much, if any. But if it commonly happens then guess what?

It's not the fact that the neighbors chimney falls but what was the cause of the fall. If due to poor upkeep by the owner then the owner would be liable because it was his/hers actions (or lack thereof) that caused the damage. If it was a storm that blew off a perfectly good chimney then the owner was not responsible because they had no control of it.

Ultra violet light could kill most things except some bugs (it's the same light that causes sunburns). However the intensity of the light and duration of the exposure are the major factors. A single UV light in a duct isn't going to expose anything in the passing air long enough to do anything.

Tornado comes through... Will they check to see if the tornado actually hit your house, or if you just got in the way of the neighbor's house blowing by?

You know that it is the prequel to Breaking Bad, right?

I’m only going with what they told me! I do know if I wake up in the middle of the night it is pushing more air than when I start to go to sleep.

I may look into it.

No, I didn't know that....I thought it was a new series. I only watched one, it was OK but I got the impression I could find something with a little more substance to it.

I haven’t watched it yet, but Saul was Walt’s lawyer in BB. The Better Call Saul series is all about who Saul was before getting involved with Walt.
I really want to watch the series, but the wife hated BB (didn’t finish it) so no way she will watch it with me

It has a very strong cult-like following though.

It’s one of the polarizing series. Starts off a little slow and then builds and builds through the seasons. The use of symbols and colors throughout the series is unmatched and the acting was spot on
IMO the second best series of all time only beaten by the Sopranos.

Oh, puh-leaze. I haven’t seen it, but there ain’t no way in heck it beats Sesame Street in that category
