And speaking of washing machines ... My fairly new (2 years old?) GE top loader developed a glitch. I think the problem started when it became unbalanced, but the symptoms are it won't do the "drain and spin". There is actually a setting on the front panel for "Drain and Spin" (I always wondered why that was there), and that will work.
A quick search on the internet found a fix. Pull the power plug, re-plug, then lift and close the lid 6 times within 30 seconds. Which will reset whatever got tripped when it encountered the "out of balance" condition. I still have to try it out to see if it's really fixed, but here's fingers crossed!
That is interesting. We also have a GE top loader. It's about 4 years old. Sometimes my wife will mention that the clothes are wet when the cycle stops. Not all the time - just once in a while. She also said the "drain and spin" thing adds water before spinning which doesn't seem right.
I agree with the solution of just pull the power plug. Leave it out for many minutes or half an hour. Then plug it back in.
My Whirlpool that's 3 years old would occasionally stick between a fill period where water is put in and the washer is adding a little more and the next step. I unplugged. Waited. All is good!
Sometimes if I waited during the stuck period it would figure out where it was and continue the cycle.

Does yours do it every time?
The first time a problem occurred, I was washing a small rug, and I expect that it "unbalanced" at that time. When I went to unload, the rug was much wetter than I expected, but there was no water in the tub. I just ran the dryer twice, no problem. I have run 3 or 4 loads since then, and each time when I come back the tub is full or partially full of water, but not soapy water, which makes me think it stalled on the rinse cycle. I'll update you later on whether the fix worked.
I recall “helping” my son get his first car. He’d saved up some money, but needed a little help from “BANK OF DAD”.
We went to look at an Echo. Honestly, it was as miserable of a car as I can ever recall. Loud, slow, cramped, well built for what it was, though.
We ended up getting a Hyundai Elantra, which at the time was cheaper, but worlds better than the Echo.
As an aside, @jmonroe1 hope good health reigns in your home soon!
Of all the luck on our drive home today I got behind a silver 4dr Echo on 462, a two lane country rd, 55 mph speed limit, heavily traveled. The Echo cruising at 45mph. I was able to safely pass but it took miles before an opportunity allowed me to do so.

Annoying when folks don't even do the posted limit to be honest, can get dangerous when multiple vehicles attempt to pass them. Just don't get why folks won't do the posted limit though!

Although the limit is under posted 90% of the time for me; sometimes (rarely) in some rare places you see a properly posted high speed limit that only good drivers should do in good cars.

Unless there's a minimum speed limit posted or they're in the left lane of multiple lanes, they don't have to drive at exactly the speed limit. They can drive below. If cars stack up behind, it's nice if the slower driver can pull over somewhere for the faster fish to pass, but...
Holy crap… just went in to change my signature and realized I’ve been with you knuckleheads since March of 2006. That’s longer than I’ve been with my wife.

............and the other day I got behind a Prius in the left lane with 2 lanes going East. He was doing 50 mph in a 60 mph area with cars stacking up behind him......I can just imagine the guy "I am driving my Prius and I am saving the world and the guys driving the gassers can just wait.....they shouldn't be in a hurry anyway". Doesn't the guy know I am trying to get to my pickleball game!
@henryn I can understand unplugging the washing machine....kind of reboots or resets it. Not so sure about opening the lid 6 times, though one Youtube guy says there is a switch on the door....he gives a way to test it. Did you try Youtube.........there are a few different sites? This guy says it is an easy fix...probably even I could do this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAWMiHfinxk
was on a weekend getaway in the country (Berkshires in Mass) so largely boonies and windy roads. Saturday after dinner heading back from town to the lake house (about 10 miles) on a relatively main road. still some curves but nothing crazy. varying speed limits (35-45 mostly). when I turned on was behind another car that proceeded to do a pretty consistent 10 under, regardless of current SL. at first was wandering around on the right shoulder a bit too. might have been an old guy. or someone after a few too many. or a lousy driver.
the weird part is that the car was a Porsche Boxster, on a perfect Porsche driving road!

Think I mentioned that my dealership body shop took my car in to repaint the bumper, but then couldn't get to it, didn't I?
Well, they did. They're offering me to use one of the dealership cars (used) to run around in, as they scheduled the repair for this week.
Not sure the year, but it's a recent body style Malibu....60K miles. Price is right (free), so not complaining.
Guessing it's a '20?
Anyway, I remember renting a Malibu when I was still working full time and traveling. At the time I thought it was an attractive vehicle. I don't recall it being terrible in any way, and I do recall it was sprightly.
Fast forward to now, GM really decontented it (or maybe my memory just sux). Hard plastic all around on the inside. Seats are hard and flat. Drivetrain isn't even remotely worthwhile. Engine is loud, harsh and slow (way slower than my Accord, and it's a hybrid). Transmission is jerky. Steering wheel only provides a suggestion of what the car is doing.
That said, the brakes feel firm and responsive. And, the doors shut with a reassuring "thunk". Even with 60K miles, there are no squeaks or rattles and it looks well put together. It's surprisingly roomy, inside. It rides well.
I know Chevy is dumping the Malibu (again). But, in reality, it wouldn't take much to make it competitive. I think most of the transmission and steering woes could be greatly improved with just software and tuning.
Another $35 in interior materials would go a long way in making it more attractive. Another $10 in sound deadening would do wonders, too.
It's supposed to compete with Accords and Camrys. As it stands right now, it's not even in the same state.
Update on the washing machine. The trick with plugging / unplugging then raising the lid 6 times did not help. The problem is not a straight forward mechanical problem, as it will drain and spin when the controls are moved to "Drain & Spin". I tried going from "Precise Fill" to a specific water level setting "Medium Load", and everything worked normally again. I can live with that.
Seems every repair starts with unplugging it, and plugging it back in. Oy!
gg - That must be some shock going from a 22 Accord hybrid to the decontented Malibu.
May your time in the Malibu be brief.
I have to remember how to update what cars we have. My daughter crashed the Camry - totaled. The last Toyota in the family is another daughter's Prius. She and it moved to Richmond.
We now have six Mazdas for 5 people. You can't beat them in that class.
I'm waiting on the new Mazda 6. Not running out and buying but I'm intrigued by what they're trying to do.

Look for a little white barcode just above the registration in the left corner windshield. It’s probably a rental car. We stage tons of them at body shops for customer use while their cars get fixed. I think my company has bought up every Malibu in existence so that might explain the decontented equipment.
I don’t think the Malibu is supposed to compete with anything any more. Like the old line Ford Taurus around 2008 GM is just maximizing its’ already amortized tooling by selling in bulk to the rental companies. Was you car black or very dark grey? That must be the cheapest paint. Occasionally we get a white one too but never a color that doesn’t scream “rental”.
I actually like the car. I’ve driven some lease returns with over 80k that ran like new.

I've had Malibus as rentals and service loaners since the mid-00s, all 4 generations in that time, from the ugly '06 that drove surprisingly well but was otherwise unappealing due to both styling and interior design/finish, to the new one that debuted in '08 which was surprisingly good (though not "spritely" in any way with the base 4-cylinder, though OK on the freeway), to the next generation with its unhappy styling and tight rear seat which really did not appeal in any way, to the current one which is crippled by the undersized 1.5L Turbo engine. The one I had was saddled with a plethora of black cloth (same as used on the seats) on the dash and door panels, making the interior an unappealing total black hole. It was a good car in search of a decent engine and some creativity in the interior design, though both of those could be rectified if you went for the top-line Premier model, but you're unlikely to find one of those as a service loaner beater. I didn't notice any excess of interior "hard plastic" compared to any other car in its class but I know that is a requirement of the automotive press in any review of a GM car.

Will look. I thought maybe it was a trade in, but could be a rental as my bumper repaint is at a different building from the Honda Store I bought my car from.
Not bad cars. It's just obvious to me it could be a good car, if GM did just a little bit with transmission software, materials, and NVH. But, as you say, they aren't going to given its short life span and amortization.

I seem to remember getting a rental Malibu that had the same engine as my old Cadillacs....4 cyl turbos. Those were torquey. The engine in the current Malibu is not.

True, lots of black cloth.
You get the 2.0 Turbo (not exactly the same one used in Caddys IIRC) in the Premier trim and it (at least used to be) available as an option package on the 2LT model if that is still offered.

Drove a '20 Malibu at work today, black over black, and it got the job done. Nothing exciting at all. Then got into a '22 Blazer and liked it a bit more as it had a bigger engine and it moved when I floored it on I-95. After that it was a '19 Colorado, today must've been my Chevy day, and again, when floored, it moved down the Florida Turnpike at a nice clip. My last run was a special mission, delivering a brand new Jeep Wagoneer for some big wig in the company with 8 miles on it. Black over black with decent alloys which had just been detailed. Since it was going to our home office where we all meet in the morning, it was the last run of the day. Boss told me not to speed...but to get it there! This guy was waiting and naturally, the brought it to me at about 4:40. Followed my lead who drove the chase van and he got us there in decent time, just got behind him and stayed on his butt the whole way down, or as close as I could! All in all, was a busy day and we are getting much busier, something I'm glad to see.

Well our garbage disposal gave up the ghost so it looks like another weekend project for me. When we turn it on you can hear the motor humming but nothing is turning, using an Allen wrench it moves easily and water flows through it so there is no clog or jamming. Maybe I can get a hog and put it under the sink Flintstone style.
Have we discussed garbage disposals here yet? I think we might have.

Garbage disposals have reset buttons. Sometimes the motor gets stuck, and a reset fixes it. They last around 10 years. About half the homes have them. They can be eco friendly, grinding up food and going into waste water to be treated is efficient. Badger is by far the largest maker of home garbage disposal units. Don't skimp on power, for a few dollars more you can get a more powerful unit. ....and yes, we have talked about them before. Have we done air fryers?

Sort of. Badger is a model of In-Sink-Erator (which was recently acquired by Whirlpool).

I don’t know if this pic identifies what year it is. Don’t know if it has a turbo (don’t think so, as it doesn’t have a turbo’s “peakiness”, and if it has a CVT, it is doing a very poor imitation of gear selection/changes as it’s always “Hunting” and never in the right gear/ratio.

I didn't double check but this may be of interest; Unlike competing units from Anaheim, Insinkerators have a bolt in the bottom that you can turn with an Allen wrench to clear a jam in the unit. The only way to un-jam an Anaheim unit is to stick a broomstick into the unit and turn. It’s nice to have both options.
There’s one other advantage, if you’re concerned about loss of manufacturing jobs in the United States. Anaheim doesn’t make its units in the USA. Emerson does some overseas production as well, but sells those products overseas. Emerson makes its units for domestic sale in Wisconsin. Anaheim makes its units in China. https://dfarq.homeip.net/who-makes-insinkerator-garbage-disposals/
Take it off and open it up, and see what you find. Can’t be too complicated a machine.
————————————————- Normally I would agree with that but @snakeweasel said he tried to turn it with the tool that you insert in the bottom center of the disposal and it turned freely. Given that and he hears it humming it’s more than likely the starter winding of the disposal is bad. There is no fix for that.
But it doesn’t hurt to pull it out and try the tool again and then give it a shake to see if anything falls out. You have to take it out anyway to replace it.

———————————————— I’m glad you didn’t ask me because I would have had to decline. Because of the Pirates I’ve lost my interest in baseball. Long ago I’d go to games but no more. If the owner spent money on the team they could be better but he’s in it to make money not win games.
Until there is new ownership this city will never have a decent team. And like I’ve already mentioned, he’s told the city when he steps aside he’s turning the team over to his daughters. If anyone in this city believes it will get better with them I’d like to sell them the Clemente Bridge.

If you're a Pirates fan, I'd go to the game tonight since they are playing the Mets, who have completely and suddenly forgotten how to win. Just a pathetic and disgusting fall from grace.

I could probably find a group if you are paying our expenses to get there and a good hotel, oh and food.

an hour.

Sometimes I see an older guy driving a big huge 1999 Cadillac (often with a vinyl roof) and I am thinking he probably had a great year selling real estate back in 1999 just before he retired

As it stands right now, it's not even in the same state.
gg - That must be some shock going from a 22 Accord hybrid to the decontented Malibu.
From what I've read the Mazda6 has sadly been discontinued. CUV/SUVs rule.

If its a 1.5 turbo it has a CVT. That could explain the lack of get up and go, refinement and too much noise.

As for the Malibu my sister has one and it's pretty nice and she loves it. However it's an older one, at the youngest a 2015 and may be older.

Have we discussed garbage disposals here yet? I think we might have.

I didn't double check but this may be of interest;
Unlike competing units from Anaheim, Insinkerators have a bolt in the bottom that you can turn with an Allen wrench to clear a jam in the unit.
