Yeah…..my offer was rejected. Kind of disappointed. Curious, because my agent says the owner didn’t let anyone know if they actually sold it. More curious, if someone outbid me (pretty safe assumption), what where their contingencies?
Anyway, housing market is softening. I won’t get into a bidding war. Seeing some buyers remorse from many who have overpaid.
That sounds likely. And the chances are, if people pay $5000 or even $10000 over asking on a house, and if it is worth it after doing some research, that means very little over the next 10 years....$500 to $1000 a year for a home that will increase a lot more than that over 10 years....like it could double!
I'm not so sure about that - I've seen media reports that suggest there may be a 10-15% correction on housing prices in the US.
Make your choices and take your chances.
could happen. And I just went through this process. To me though, most important is finding the house you want where you want it. Price really is secondary. You have to live in the place. It isn't a rare baseball card you are putting in a safety deposit box hoping it goes up!
GG though, like me, will be selling and buying at the same time in the same market. I got a record for the neighborhood price (and would not shock me if it does not get topped for years) so even though I know I probably paid a premium on the new place, I should still be ahead if the market corrects (in that the old place would have dropped as much if not more).
Like a wise man once said, the only difference, is the difference!
now people who bought their first places this summer, they could be underwater for a while. which again is a real good reason to buy a house you love and want to stay in for a long time!
Amen to all.
I don’t want to be boxed in to HAVING to buy something because I sold my house and have no place to go (and no, I don’t want to move twice, so no temporary homes).
Push comes to shove, I like the house I’m living in. Would like something with less upkeep, ergo why I’m looking to downsize. But, if something doesn’t happen, I’m perfectly content with my current abode.
As an aside, I just signed a contract to work in NYC for a week with my old company. Won’t look a gift horse in the mouth, but why they can’t find someone younger and cheaper than me to do this work is crazy!
Shore house has the bonus that you can always rent it even if prices drop.
Yes. My grand plan is when the kids are out of high school to sell our primary and buy a bigger place at the shore. The current place would become a rental property.
Wife is on the fence about it. I said well it’s many years away so I have time to convince you.

Before I filed for Commonwealth's Attorney I told the person who assigns retired judges I'd keep that gig if they could guarantee I'd get 10 days per month. At $400/day with mileage and overnights comped it would give me some "walking around money," as my father would say- but they weren't able to do that.

There was a time when I said the same, "I never want to retire, what would I do all day?" Now that I have been retired for about 12 years I would never have wanted to work those years. I'd be hopeless as an employee, worker, business owner. I lost my motivation and desire to do any of that dog eat dog stuff. I play tennis and/or pickleball for about 2 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week. By the time I have a shower, read the newspapers, watch some tennis on TV, watch Netflix, take Trixie for a few walks...I have no idea how I ever had time to work.
The way I see it, any years after 60 are bonus years, and they should be used to do your favorite things....and working doesn't count. When it is all over what will you say, I really enjoyed working for my entire life....I didn't get to do what I really wanted to do....as much as possible?

I worked until I was a few months short of 70. I thought, why not? They will pay me to play with computers, and let me play with a lot of really high performance computers, so ... But as time wore on, it was more and more paperwork, more and more meetings, less and less playing with computers. And they kept getting more and more restrictive with what I was allowed to do with the computers. Never mind doing things the right way or the best way or the smart way, do it the corporate way. After being retired for 2 years, I have to agree with driver100, I don't have the time or the inclination to give to a job.

After retiring I took a few months just to decompress and adjust to what seemed like a permanent vacation. In retrospect I think it was almost like what you hear about with people experiencing PTSD, but eventually that passed and some offers to consult came my way. I did a couple but quickly realized I hated it and have avoided it ever since. For me, not having to deal with difficult or inept people (there are far too many of those in govt), deal with HR types (IMO, the most useless profession on the planet), and the policy bureaucracy that is endemic within the public sector (which I think could easily be reduced by 75% with no discernible effect) just became too aggravating and was something I was highly motivated to avoid.

Unfortunately, you wouldn't know what you have missed until it is too late. You think working is the ultimate......it isn't. It is good, but there are other things you can do that are more enjoyable. As @henryn and @ab348 have said.....there is more to life than working for the man. Try to find an interest you can start before retiring so you have something to get you started in your retirement years. You can't go from a full time job to nothing very easily. Another thing....75% of bosses are either inadequate, useless, on power trips, know less than I do. It is easy to have personality conflicts - you don't get that when you are retired. And if you do....occasionally I get a tennis guy who is a problem, but I can ignore them, but the boss will be there!
I don’t think I could ever retire, at least fully. I’d be too bored. To go along with living at the shore I see myself doing something down here in my later years. Driving the beach taxi, running a small shop on the boards, etc. Heck maybe even drive the Tram Car. That would be fun. (Google Wildwood Tram Car if you aren’t familiar).

I’m good with it. Mentioned I worked for a while in Puerto Rico for the company. They picked up the tab for my lodging, food and transport, even when I was doing volunteer work, and not working for them. I thought that was generous. Plus, it makes me a little more amenable to doing contract work for them.
The gig in NY will allow me to work with a couple of the folks who used to work for me. That’s a good thing.
I’m working a week every couple of months. That also works for me. It keeps me on top of things in my industry. And, they pick up my expenses and give me money for doing so. What’s not to like?
If I don’t want to do what they request, I’ll just tell them “no” when they ask.
That’s not IMO “working”. It’s having a fun hobby that makes you some money. Retiring is getting out of the full time/corporate/stressful grind rat race.

Passing on the right is permissible in a lot of situations, pretty much as long as you are on marked pavement.
On a two lane residential street?
I am not talking about the incident described just the comment that passing on the right generally puts the driver in the wrong.
I know around here in the rural areas it's not uncommon on a two lane country road for someone making a left turn to move into the oncoming traffics lane to slow down and make the left turn so not to impede a driver behind them. Of course only when there is no on coming traffic.

I am getting close to retirement and I am just settling into my current job and riding the next few years out. I could do it now but funds would be a bit tight and if I make it the next 5 years and three months they will cover my insurance in retirement.

——————————————— That’s where I was very lucky. My old boss called me because they needed help in an area that was ignored and my boss knew I could help. He told me he knew I wouldn’t put up with game playing and didn’t even want me doing monthly reports or going to meetings that I didn’t feel would be beneficial to what I was doing. I guess you could say I was given a free hand to do it my way and it was working perfectly. Again, I was very lucky.
Why didn’t they do it that way when I was a full time working stiff? The only way I can attempt to explain it is that upper management thinks they know how to direct their people. But in the end when the fire gets too high they throw up their arms and call in a fireman.

In my limited experience, when a house was taken off the market as sold, and then shortly afterwards showed up for sale again, it was usually a case of "failure to obtain financing". When I was house shopping, I always had "pre-approved financing", and made sure that the seller was aware of that.

GG had cash. You’d think if the top bidder flaked they would go to the next one and see if they were still interested.

Real Estate Agent just sent me a note stating the house I made a rejected offer for, that was pulled off the market, is back on the market. Weird.
The one in Newport? They didn't accept any of the offers?
Maybe none of the offers were high enough....in their opinion. They may have expected a buying frenzy, but the market could be cooling...it is here.
Unlikely.. @graphicguy stated he offered over the asking price.
There may have been other bids higher....maybe $5000 over asking, but they may have expected a buying frenzy like around here...........they like bidding wars and a $300000 house can sell for $350 or $400000 - seriously.
No, I didn't use my turn signal, I usually don't when I'm turning into my driveway. I should start doing that.
And I didn't check my rear view mirror at the last second, something else that I should have done. Mea culpa.
Something else I should do is hook up that dash cam I bought last year and never got around to installing.
Perfect example of why turn signals are critical for safe driving on every turn. It's the ones you don't see that need that signal the most. Better to just make it a habit to always signal for that reason alone.

At 65 I'm really enjoying the prosecutor gig; I have a great staff and with but a couple of exceptions the defense attorneys are a pleasure to work with. Today was a good example; we spent most of the day brainstorming strategy for a murder trial that starts next week. I was working on the opening statement while my assistant was putting together the audio visual exhibits. Everyone pitches in with ideas and suggestions. It's somewhat challenging yet fun. I've told this before, but at my election watch party in 2018 a friend who practices family law asked my wife If she thought I would run again in 2024. My wife replied, "If he does, will you handle my divorce for free?" That said, she has no problem with me taking retired judge cases after my term is up.

The way I see it, any years after 60 are bonus years, and they should be used to do your favorite things....and working doesn't count. When it is all over what will you say, I really enjoyed working for my entire life....I didn't get to do what I really wanted to do....as much as possible?

I believe you should work to live, not live to work.

That's my plan. Just doing a hobby, for myself, that can make a few bucks.

Of course, I didn't press 1 and I just hung up....but I am curious to know what would have happened if I had pressed 1. Just wondering how the scam works. I assume you give them your credit card info so they can reverse the transaction.

Company gave us off today as a thank you. Wife is stuck working and couldn’t take off.
I took the kids out to a junk food lunch and then to the water park. We have the season pass and they close after this weekend.
Surprisingly quiet for a holiday weekend, because many schools are back in session. Sure in a few hours town will be rockin’ again

We’re doing the same. Down at Legoland for a few days eating terrible food and making memories.
That’s where I was very lucky.

And, there are lots of videos of Tesla driver's who are asleep. This is a recent one near Niagara Falls Ontario...they shot the video over about 15 minutes. The guys seat is reclined and his eyes are closed.

My wife replied, "If he does, will you handle my divorce for free?"
That said, she has no problem with me taking retired judge cases after my term is up.
