This is why anytime I had a claim that wasn’t my fault I wouldn’t allow my insurance to pay out. I contact their insurance company (available on Police report) and deal with them directly.
IIRC you had a difficult time getting a Police report, correct?
That’s what I have done on the rare occurrence that someone busts up my car. I think a few years back when a utility truck backed into me I gave my insurance a heads up but didn’t file a claim. The utility company wrote me a check with no hassle. I made sure a cop showed up and wrote a report.
If he can’t get a report from whatever government agency he’s dealing with I’d go to the press and embarrass them.
Don't big utility companies insure themselves......as in cover any accidents themselves. When I worked for the large conglomerate (Warner Communications formerly Warner Brothers) they owned 1000s of vehicles, and they did it through an insurance broker just to have the right forms etc., but they paid out for any accidents......kind of like having their own insurance company.
Possibly. All that mattered was that I got a check. I recall way back in the early 90s someone smashed my truck and I definitely talked to the other guy’s insurance. I’ve also talked to insurance companies when I can find out who runs down my mailbox.
The point is not to pay any deductibles.
.....also, I could be wrong but we have "no fault" insurance. So, I think that we are compensated by our insurance company, and then they go after the other person's insurance company.
I am amazed at how many people on Judge Judy don't have insurance. A lot of them say they were going to buy it the next day, or they forgot to send in the money. Many of them also don't have a license! But they don't see anything wrong in driving to the store or to a party. Never thinking they may injure someone and have to pay a few $100000s in compensation.
Some deadbeats figure they are so broke that they are lawsuit proof.
I seriously don't think they think that far into the future. They think only of the here and now, I have a car, I need to get to the liquor store, why mess with insurance or a license - only suckers do that, nothing could possibly go wrong.
I’m no expert, but AFAIK, someone has to pay the deductible. Since a guilty party is not identified, it is you. Even if something falls on your car without you in it, you pay a deductible, and that obviously is not your fault.
There is indeed a guilty party identified. The insurers have that information. Now, whether this guy has changed his story of "Sorry, I just didn't see you" obviously I do not know.
Oh, sorry, you mentioned cameras and I thought otherwise.
But, that guy would have to pay them the deductible and then they pay it back to you.
Obviously the guy who hit you is now denying it was his fault.
I still have not heard a peep from the insurance adjuster but on Friday I got cranky and sent an email to the local brokerage who wrote the policy. I got a fairly quick call back from someone there, not the agent I deal with but someone else. She said that she had not been able to talk to the adjuster either, but spoke with someone at the insurance company that she knows. That person did some checking and said the deductible has now been waived. Where it gets strange is that she said she asked that person if she could tell me this, and the person there said not to. But she decided to tell me anyway. They are just one very screwed-up insurance company apparently.
@ab348 I think it is just part of the way it works these days. They do everything possible to avoid having to pay out. Adjusters have more on their plate than they can handle. Don't forget, they get pay raises and promotions depending on how much they can avoid paying. It was smart getting your agent involved...that is one reason for having an agent. The agent has some clout, so they replied to the agent, but the official word has to come from corporate. Nothing gets done efficiently and speedily these days.

Stereo in the Accord isn’t as good as the ELS in the TLX. But, it’s not night and day difference. It’s good in it’s own right.
Driving dynamics…..no torque steer in the Accord, which is somewhat surprising given it’s FWD vs TLX SH AWD. But, steering is a big light vs the TLX. Accord has a sport mode, which tightens the steering and the shock valving (mine has the active suspension). Sport mode in a hybrid is kinda crazy. But, both the electric motor and ICE are used for acceleration when you press it, which doesn’t make it fast, but does make it quick.
PUG in the TLX vs RUG in the Accord.
I’m getting about 43 MPG regardless of highway or city driving.
Accord is super quiet, which figures given it runs on the electric motor most of the time. Transition to the ICE comes on is seamless and mostly unnoticeable.
Rides well. Materials are quite good.
Typical Honda product. It doesn’t do any one thing the best. But does everything well.
I'm somewhat surprised you like the Accord better than the recently designed TLX. I've seen a few new TLXs in the wild and they look really nice. Other than thru car reviews and online viewing I have yet to see a new Integra.
So, got the lowdown on the house I was trying to buy down @kyfdx way. It sold….for $2K more than I offered.
I told my real estate agent I would not get into a bidding war. So, she didn’t come back to me to make another offer. On the one hand, I’m disappointed I missed out. I really liked the neighborhood and the house. On the other hand, I doubt the delta on my offer and selling price would have been a lot more than $2K if I DID get into a bidding war.

So, after waiting for weeks to get an estimate and open date to begin the repairs, this morning was supposed to be the day. Yesterday afternoon, though, a Seinfeld moment happened. I got a call from Enterprise to tell me that despite my reservation, they were having "delays in returns of vehicles" and so they did not have a vehicle to put me into this morning, and so I needed to wait bringing my car to the body shop until I got a call from them today. So I'm still here at home waiting for that.
Good news from yesterday was that I received a voice mail from the mysterious insurance adjuster apologizing profusely for the non-communication and telling me that the deductible (and car rental maximum amount limit, oddly) had been waived and that it was on their books now as a non-fault incident for me. Odd since I never had an issue with the rental car cost max limit. She also noted that she couldn't find or had never seen the estimate from the body shop though, which is odd since they had gotten acceptance from the insurance company and authorization to begin the work whenever. The poor woman just seems out of it.

I’m not surprised at your rental car situation. Down here every airport rental location is short on cars by a massive amount. We sometime have to pull cars out of retirement and put them back into service just to meet demand. We then sometimes drive them hundreds of miles to get them where they’re needed.

He was in the low 90’s. The groan was because he missed the spot he was aiming for.
He attends Cal State at San Bernardino on a scholarship. They expect him to be in the mid 90’s when the season starts in January. The coaching clinic he attends is for his mechanics and rehab for his arm.

What gets me is you pay in for all these years....and then when you need their services you get treated like crap. And you are the innocent party...you didn't cause the problem!
I finally got a call from Enterprise around midday that they had found a vehicle for me, so I took off for the repair place before it went away. Even there it was confusing - they had no record of the deductible being waived, and the guy I had dealt with previously who told me it would be an 11-day stay wasn't there, while the guy I dealt with today insisted it would only be 8 days, which would be OK except that is what the rental car place is now expecting. Who knows how that's going to work out.
I ended up with a 2021 RAV4 with about 28,000 miles on it. white over black, a base LE model. Surprised at how basic these are. Controls are very different from what I'm used to. No smart key either, still using the old bayonet style. I'm calling shenanigans on any auto writer who praises Toyota's controls as being precise because the turn signal lever on this thing feels like it could break at any moment. Same for criticism of "hard plastics" because that is all this has inside. infotainment is basic and baffling but I got my phone paired at least. Feels peppy enough but the engine sounds rough like your typical 4-banger and there is a strange driveline sound at 40mph and up that made me think it had off-road tires, but it doesn't. For the longest time I couldn't figure out how to open the rear hatch either. Finally got it to work but not sure how/why. This is slightly wider than the ATS so I think I won't try to put it in the garage.

There was a response on my liking Mazda 6s. It said they had stopped making them.
Actually, they paused it. When the new 6 debuts (maybe they'll call it something else, but it's the 6 replacement) it will have RWD and a standard 6 cyl. A budget Bimmer.
I could live with that, though really, my current 14 3 at 82k has been absolutely flawless and a lot of fun to drive. I might end up buried in it.

I think the days of big V6s and V8s are now numbered. Sedans aren't really on most people's radar (until another alleged manufactured gas crisis hits, which hopefully won't happen if electrics continue their surge).
Last I heard about Mazda was they were working on an electric where the small rotary engine was used as a charging source for their electric, much like a hybrid.

Town assessor property values site added an extra zero onto the selling price of our old house. That should give our old neighbors a heart attack, not to mention the new buyers!
2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
should not matter. everyone's value goes up, so % paid goes down, to get to the same total tax paid. at least that is the theory!
at my old house they reassessed only a few times in 25 years. so after 10=15 years the discrepancies got pretty big (newer build houses were taxed a lot heavier). so when the rebalanced a lot of the older house owners got jumped up, but newer builds got a decrease. and man did the first group complain!

They only reassess 25% of the properties in the county each year. But, they did 100% of our town, and the word is an average reassessment of +30%. In theory, that should drop county tax rate by about 7.5%, leaving me with big, big increase. But, the county taxes are only about 20% of our total, so not so bad. The school and city taxes are the other 80%, and all of those properties were reassessed, so, a 30% tax rate reduction. Not as big of a percentage increase for me, but substantial.
I think I'm going from around $5500 annually to about $7500. Sucks, but I can't really complain. We've been chronically under-assessed for years. Even after the 49% increase, the assessment is still 15-20% under actual value.
I just had to (for the first time ever) write out a check for annual property taxes on my new house. Just the school tax (Billed in September). The rest (county tax) is IIRC in January. I think school is also about 80% of the total so the biggest hit.
in the past the mortgage company always escrowed. So I paid it every month so it did not seem as bad! At least the new place is about 1/3 less in total than the old one (I pay about what you do now which seems like a bargain compared to the old area).
but at least I am done for the year, and in a couple of years when the house is paid off, I won't have any monthly housing costs outside of utilities. That will certainly help cashflow. And if we are both still working, be a perfect excuse to get a boxster or something fun like that!
should not matter. everyone's value goes up, so % paid goes down, to get to the same total tax paid. at least that is the theory!
Oh, that's just what they want you to think. Govts do not work that way. Here, the annual charade is quite predictable. Property assessments go up by some %age each year. The city govt looks at that and then jiggles their tax rate to ensure they get more revenue than the previous year, although that usually means that their mil rate goes down slightly. The headline in the news is always "City drops tax rate by xxx" and councillors trumpet in the press how virtuous they are for reducing taxes. Then the tax bills arrive sometime later and everybody's bill is up by some %age thanks to higher assessed values. You never pay the same or less (unless your house has burned down).
I blame myself. Back in ye olden days when I was in charge of IT for the provincial dept that was responsible for property assessments, that section was a total mess, all paper-based, with very poor records, inconsistent procedures, and stone-age management. They rolled out reassessments every 3 years but they were mostly a joke. We put in a mainframe system with lots of brute force and at huge cost and effort to make everything electronic with standardized processes, better data and consistent formulae. The idea was to get assessors away from their desks and calculators and stacks of paper, and instead get them out into the field to actually visit properties and improve the accuracy of their records.
I have lived in this house for 25 years and have (thankfully) never seen an assessor once, so that obviously worked out well.
Last I heard about Mazda was they were working on an electric where the small rotary engine was used as a charging source for their electric, much like a hybrid.
That's how the Volt worked (but with ecotec engine)
But neither is really a hybrid, per say, since the ICE doesn't power the wheels directly.

LOL! If anyone can pull it off, it’s Mazda. They have the most Wankel experience than any of the other manufacturers. Plus, the rotary would be smaller, have less mass, and weigh less than any other gas engine. So, quite suited for that kind of duty.
Personally, I would love to see what they could do with another iteration of the RX. But, I doubt that is in the cards.
The rotary probably makes horrible sense for that duty, unless they suddenly figured out how to make it fuel efficient. Seems to me their old Miller-cycle engine would be better suited.

Would the seals be less likely to wear under that use? I mean, is a rotary better than a piston engine when running at a constant speed to charge batteries? I suppose they could use a really small rotary to compensate for the gas guzzling.

I am not a mechanical engineer, or automotive engineer, or any kind of engineer at all. But it always seemed to me that a rotary engine should be much more efficient than a reciprocating piston engine. I am aware that didn't work out so well in actual practice, but it still seems to me that it should have.
I actually owned a Mazda with the rotary engine way back when. An RX3 if I recall correctly. It was a lot of fun to drive, but I didn't keep it very long. The car was sporty, but only at high RPM, and you had to clean the spark plugs once a week in order for it to achieve those high RPMs. Then one day I checked the oil, which I did fairly often, and it was d____ near bone dry. No leaks, no nothing, just suddenly ate all of the oil. Which scared the bejusus out of me, and I sold it soon after.

C’est la vie!

The reason I got it is because I knew you wouldn’t get into a bidding war.

My 12-yr-old is going pretty hard on baseball at this point. He wound up making a top tournament team recently, which now makes 3 current teams: 1 tournament, 1 travel, 1 rec. Kind of the way it goes, unfortunately, because teams aren't always consistent. A year ago, we put all his eggs in the travel basket and the coach who asked him to join wound up canceling the season, and it was too late to go anywhere else. So, since then, we've had him go to several tryouts each season so he'd be covered. Now, of course, he has too many. Oh well. Good thing he has so much energy. He didn't even start playing till he was 10, so I'm pretty amazed at how far he's come in such a short time. I think he is mostly focusing on being a catcher, but he's proven to be a darned good pitcher, too.

He was in the low 90’s. The groan was because he missed the spot he was aiming for.
He attends Cal State at San Bernardino on a scholarship. They expect him to be in the mid 90’s when the season starts in January. The coaching clinic he attends is for his mechanics and rehab for his arm.
Glad you were able to see it!

Yes, thanks. They have high hopes for him.

He is a double threat because he is also a slugger. He hits lots of home runs due to his stature (6’4” tall and 220 lbs) and his legs are like iron.

Last I heard about Mazda was they were working on an electric where the small rotary engine was used as a charging source for their electric, much like a hybrid.
At camp late yesterday, he threw 3 pitches at 90 mph, 91 mph and 90 mph

at my old house they reassessed only a few times in 25 years. so after 10=15 years the discrepancies got pretty big (newer build houses were taxed a lot heavier). so when the rebalanced a lot of the older house owners got jumped up, but newer builds got a decrease. and man did the first group complain!

I think I'm going from around $5500 annually to about $7500. Sucks, but I can't really complain. We've been chronically under-assessed for years. Even after the 49% increase, the assessment is still 15-20% under actual value.
It's tough being on a fixed income, though..

in the past the mortgage company always escrowed.
