Watched an interesting video of a mechanic tearing down a blown Hyundai 2.4L Theta engine, the kind that tend to blow up. This one had grenaded and thrown/broke a connecting rod, which punched a hole in the bottom of the block, quite impressive. I think he said it had well over 100K miles on it, maybe twice that.

Pretty much every wear surface he revealed during the teardown showed signs of good maintenance, no sludge, no scoring, everything very clean. That is until he got to cylinder #3, which still had the big end of the rod attached to the crank while the rest of it along with the piston was still in the cylinder. When he unbolted the end of the rod from the crank he found the two halves of the bearing stacked on top of each other after it spun.. He commented on how thin those bearing inserts were and they really did look very thin compared to others I’ve seen, though I’m no expert. Maybe cost-cutting gone too far. The rest of the internals looked very good. It was pretty interesting overall.

He said replacement engines were both hard to get and tended to be expensive because of demand.

I never understood the whole concept - get a truck and then basically anihilate its ability to actually be a truck by putting these stupid low profile tires. This one is not most extreme case I have seen.

This is the info from Genesis North America regarding the recall on my G90:

GMNA'S NORTH AMERICA AMERICA SAFETY OFFICE ("NASO") HAS FILED SAFETY RECALL 019G TO ADDRESS A CONDITION INVOLVING THE TURBOCHARGER OIL SUPPLY PIPE IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR GENESIS VEHICLES PRODUCED FOR SALE IN THE U.S AND CANADA. GENESIS IS CONDUCTING THIS ACTION TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF ITS VEHICLES FOR GENESIS CUSTOMERS.
THE LEFTHAND ("LH") TURBOCHARGER OIL SUPPLY PIPES IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES CAN CRACK DUE TO PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN OIL LEAKING ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. OIL LEAKING ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.

From what my Service manager told me, they don’t expect to have parts to fix the issue until after May 7th or 8th, and could be even later than that. It only applies to the 3.3 L V6 Twin Turbo engines (375 hp). I just hope they get the fix completed before it gets into the 90’s down here in mid-May or early June.

Depends who the losers are. If Houston, Purdue and UConn, that's not good.
None of those teams have played yet but it depends on how far your losers would have advanced on your bracket.
I have 5 losers, so far, but only had one of them winning in the next round, so hopefully doesn't hurt too much.
We have a family pool, so it's mostly about bragging rights. :)

The New England International Auto Show is back, 4/25-28, now $17(!) a ticket. And, as expected, the exhibitors look a bit sparse; Europe will be represented by VW (not the group, just VW) and McLaren. Usual Japanese suspects, sans Mazda and representing the good Korea (no offense to the good citizens of N. Korea), HyunKia.

CDJR is doing a Ride & Drive, perhaps I'll try a Tonal... Hornet. If I go as the latter years NAIAS has been less than stellar. I still have such fond (and oh, so distant) memories of the NYIAS at The Colosseum with my late father in the '60s/'70s. As well as solo trips to the Javits once my parents moved to FL.

Perhaps the roster will change, but it's probably more representative to just take a nice sunny day and cruise the closest Automile.

    And, UConn repeat!

@andres3, good to hear your wife is OK. That’s the most important part. From what I’ve heard about accidents there are always he-said she-said situations that have to be resolved. I know you don’t like insurance companies but this is where your insurance company is your friend. Right or wrong they’ll do their best to support their policy holder not the other guy. That person’s insurance company will fight for them.

Unfortunately, sometimes it’s a split decision but you can’t do it on your own unless you have deep pockets and have several unbiased witnesses who are willing to support you. I’ve been told that it’s not uncommon for witnesses to decide not to get involved at the last minute, so you have to be prepared for that. Maybe this is where dash cams help but I’ve heard they can lead to split decisions too.

    Good luck.

    jmonroe

No doubt even video can leave room for interpretation, but part of the problem is those so called "insurance arbitrators" like favoring the house with those "split" decisions. U-turns are a form of "left turn" and left turns are almost like rear-enders, the person making the dangerous left turn has the greater duty of care in almost any situation.

I get the insurance is supposed to fight for their insured, but believing a cockamamie malarkey bigly pile of manure story is another thing.
I got hit many years ago making a left turn. The cop ticket the other driver and my insurance was insistent that the other driver was 100% at fault.
Hence the qualifier "almost any situation."
I wouldn't say "almost any situation" as there are plenty of situations in which the left turner has right of way.
Yes, but those situations don't cause collisions often. The types of situations that cause collisions with left-turners is the left turner making a right-of-way violation. The other situations would be extremely rare in comparison, like rear enders being the person in front's fault.

I read an article that Oakland has an abundance of abandoned cars going overboard as apparently the Oakland Police are incapable of making tax dollars useful and doing their jobs with stolen and recovered/abandoned vehicles. If not the Police then who?

Traffic tickets must be REALLY PROFITABLE as they can spend more time on that rather than impounding and auctioning off these cars?

We’ve had 3” of rain so far with another 3” expected today from that huge storm moving in from the gulf. We’ve been under tornado watches and are currently under flash flood “warnings”. Winds of 35 mph gusting to over 60 mph in thunderstorms.

We have had a fairly mild winter, but it was one of the rainiest on record. It doesn’t take much rain to cause flooding along the southeastern shoreline here in Florida.

could have used it today. But didn't. still hibernating for the winter back in the shed. I was not expecting to need it so I did not unearth it and drag it to the garage yesterday (which requires leaving a car outside, which is why it stays in the shed). So this batch got moved via shovel. Not too deep (4" maybe) but there was some mixing, and it was really wet and heavy.

And so this morning I bid a fond hasta luego to the A7 as it was taken away via flatbed. Two weeks after the, "Drive system malfunction" was resolved, it returned last night at we were ready to leave for dinner/theater. Unlike the last incident, the car was now immobile as it would not go into gear. The dash kept advising me to start the car in order to select a gear, indeed it was started.
So, a call to Audicare, a couple of hour wait for the tow and it's off to Audi Cape Cod to go under the knife. One year of warranty left....

Mr. Tow Guy, spoke little English, but we were able to communicate as I used my little spoken Spanish. But he was quite pleasant and efficient. And, on a crutch as he wrecked his knee in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago. He showed me pix of his surgery, ugh, now I'm ready for lunch...
As I said, in broken Español, see you later to my favorite car (hasta luego a mi coche favorita?), he pointed to the M240 in the garage and said no, that is your favorite car! I believe he said he also has a 330xi turbo.

So, I'll await word from Audi, drive the M240 in this wonderful weather (monsoon) and (as always) think about what will replace the A7 possibly next year. Shame, two years of 0% financing still to go.

I also found my next PHEV- the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+. A 40+ mile pure EV range coupled with a twin turbo I6. 603 hp and 0-60 in around 3.5 seconds.

oh, don't fret. As long as you own an Audi, the chance for drama is very high.

For those needing some Spring in their life after having some big snow, here's a neighbor's yard (well a very distant neighbor).

The daffodils are a nice touch. My wife’s are a little behind those but still about 3 weeks ahead of normal thank to the snowless winter. I guess they can get fooled too.

The news story said the owner had been planting the daffodils for quite a while. There are wood chip-covered walks like a park. Beautiful.

We always enjoy going to Cincinnati where one of the hillside parks over the Ohio River has daffodils blooming early most springs.

Was behind a Lyrique or whatever it's called for the first time this evening. I wasn't impressed by the styling. I wasn't impressed by the styling many months ago when I saw a truckload of them. Odd taillights.

I was more impressed by the S550 and the Genesis 90.

Ya know, I think I finally have you figured out. You like all this speed so you’re never late for dinner.

Gotten worse. For a change forecasters guessed low.
Probably another 8” since changed back to snow 4 hours ago. Snowmegodden out there.

Told the wife I might be playing the snowbird card.

And somehow I don’t think I am putting grass seed down on Tuesday as I had planned.
