I just put together a teak bench for our shower room. That was for the wife to use for shaving her legs or some such. I can still stand up. Most days.

Not a car story but we did get a new shower installed this weekend. Replacing a 20+ year old basic shower that the builder put in.

That looks nice. Are you really that old that you have to sit down when taking a shower? :'(

It does look nice. I assume there wasn't a bathtub there before installing the shower. :)

More. Trials and tribulations for abacomike. Fell at home after losing my balance and ended up back in hospital 2 weeks ago. I am back in rehab as an inpatient. Getting a little pain relief but it’s slow going.

I am hoping to get home in a week or two. My back is the culprit this time. I am very sore and frustrated / not to mention depressed over this and the last 12-13 weeks of my life. The double bypass of my heart arteries took a lot out of me.

Hope you guys are all well as I mend my lumbar area of my back.

I do hope all ends up well with a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear of your continued health problems. I hope the recover isn’t too long.

The last time you mentioned health issues I told of my older brother falling at home. After a hospital stay he went to rehab for 10 days before discharging himself home. He seem to be on the mend but like with you it isn’t easy living alone when you get old.

Wow! I bet that gets under the skin of a few year-round residents!

My wife and I were out doing a few activities yesterday for our anniversary, and one of them was on a college campus in Erie. The person we were meeting said, "There's a big parking lot out front, so you shouldn't have any problem finding a spot, but students are starting to show up on campus again...." Well, we get there, and there are kids students everywhere! We were fortunate in that a car was pulling out just as we entered the parking lot, which I imagine ruffled a few feathers of the five cars that were circling the lot (most likely waiting for someone to pull out). So, if that was "starting to show up," I imagine it will be very busy the next time we try to stop by there!

We took one kid back to school last weekend, although he probably didn't need our help. He's the one we don't worry about too much. Taking another one down this weekend. He's closer to home and only has classes two days a week, so he'll probably be coming home more often this semester, even thought I said he'd be better off getting a job, building that bank account!

Absolutely! There are always myriad jobs available on and around campus, so he should definitely take advantage of his good fortune on the class schedule. If nothing else, I always appreciated how accessible everything was when I was in college. It is amazing how much time one saves each day when you're not commuting, shopping, cooking, etc. You know, all that stuff we do as bonafide adults! :hushed:

Happy anniversary, we did that last month. I’m sure I’ve have a few more of those than you guys.

If you were at a campus in Erie, I’m sure it was the Penn State Behrend campus. Son #1 did one year there and thought it was better than the main campus because he could actually talk to his professors without much of a hassle and he really disliked the size of the lecture halls at the main campus. He went so far as to say if he had to do it again he’d have gone there for all 4 years. The only reason he went there is because the main campus screwed up scheduling 2 of his senior classes so rather than staying an extra semester to take those he transferred to Behrend so he could finish in 4 years flat.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good online bank that's FDIC insured? I need to move to a different bank. Looking for good savings and good CD rates, not necessarily tops among the competitors, but good because of no surprise fees or hassels with depositing and retrieving funds.

I had to look it up: Gannon University. Very much a downtown city setting and colocated with Hamot Hospital, which, IIRC, is where a friend was stationed for her MD residency about ten years ago. Her family moved to Iowa, which is where she attended med school, after completing the residency.

    @imidazol97,
We use Synchrony Bank. Also, Vanguard has some good savings rates and brokered CD's.
I avoid the 'callable' brokered CD's.
Not too long ago, I was going to open a new CD.
One of our banks best rate was 4.85 APR. I got the same CD, same bank, through Vanguard at 5.35 APR.

Do you have an iPhone? If so, I recommend an Apple Savings account. It is very convenient to use, no fees, and easy to monitor. Current savings rate is 4.4%.

I haven't used their checking, but have had mortgages and CDs with Third Federal, based out of Cleveland. Very good customer service, and strong CD offerings (at that time)

Another vote for Charles Schwab. They have an FDIC bank, and as mentioned, the brokered CDs are the best rates you can get.

CD rates have really dropped since the last time I looked.

I have a little bit in a Vanguard money market at 5.35%. Mostly I use their high yield bond fund which pays an effective rate of 6% after fees. I believe you can link it with an outside bank account for quick withdrawals although I don’t do that.

There are also a lot of bank and credit union CDs that pay about 5% but that ties your money up for months.

BTW, the last two times I posted the screen froze and a message came up from Vanilla telling me to contact the website. Have we been hacked?

This would drive a lot of people crazy, but I'm an optimizer, so I use my local brick and mortar bank for a zero-interest checking account that offers Allpoint ATM access--I also have the mortgage and HELOC on my primary residence there. I have a Vanguard money market account for savings. And when I had CDs, I would generally shop the best rate available at the time online and send the money to that institution.

I have consolidated most investments at Vanguard, but the total number of accounts I have open for various things would be triggering to a lot of people. Old employer's HSA, new employer's HSA, one rewards CC for restaurants, one for gas, one for everyday purchases, one for Amazon, a Target debit card, a BofA credit card that I don't use but keep open because it has a ridiculously high limit, etc...

I'm similar; HSA, two 401k, three IRA... Credit Union for day to day, but three online high-yield savings accounts. CC for gas/electricity for the two-faced Audi and travel, CC for restaurants and a CC for everything else.

I went to college about 500 miles from home (home being SoCal, school was in Phoenix).

I lived with the mother of one of my dad's navy buddies - kinda like living with your grandmother. She had a 2 bedroom townhouse, and I paid the exorbitant rent of $150/mo to live there.

When I'm working on the baseball field I usually go somewhere for lunch. About half the time it's a fast food place so I have a fairly good understanding of what's going on.

Today, for some odd reason, I decided to go to Wendy's. I haven't been to the Wendys, near the field, in about 2 years because they are mean there.

I made my way through traffic, arrived there, and the electric company was working on their service. They were closed. :|

Feeling a little blue: Went to local Walmart today as Fox station and Salvation Army were sponsoring a "Stuff the Bus" event, collecting school supplies for kids. I donated a couple of backpacks (including a Patriots themed one; the local weatherman hosting seemed surprised I wanted to donate it!), pencils and calculators.
As I was driving out, there was an elderly gentleman standing in the (shaded) grass across the street from Wallyworld in a flannel shirt with a cardboard sign, "Out of work and homeless. Please help..." Something about that got to me, there but for the grace...
Took the better 7/8ths to Chick fil A for lunch, purchased a gift card and went back to give to the gentleman. Alas he was gone, drove around the plaza looking for him. No luck, can't shake the feeling that I've somehow failed the day.
I'll save the gift card for a next encounter.

We wanted our kids to go to small schools and not stay in town. So many from their high school class go to IU and they don’t seem to branch out much and it becomes high school 2.0

Our son went to a PSU branch campus near us. He lived at home. Mrs. venture wanted that.

It only lasted one year, then he went to the main campus with a zillion other people.

I know what you mean though. Many from his class were at the branch. He was much more diversified by going away. That's the good news. The bad news (for us anyway) is he lives in the next state now. :/

I can’t tell you the last time I ate at Wendy’s. So, for a change of pace I tried just last week, we went in, got in line behind two folks and their system goes down by the time we stepped up. I’ll have to try again because I remember their burgers are pretty good and even Mrs. j likes them too for a change but maybe I’ll try the spicy chicken sandwich you mentioned. I like spicy stuff but I know Mrs. j will go with the burger.

Today is Mrs. j’s birthday but I better not suggest that for tonight or I’ll never get a chance to go back. :'(

IU freshmen move in last Sunday till today. Full moon. Serenity now 😂

When the rest of the students show up the town goes from 86 k to 130k +

The college I went to was 5 miles from my home. No need for me to move in to the dorm.

We wanted our kids to go to small schools and not stay in town. So many from their high school class go to IU and they don’t seem to branch out much and it becomes high school 2.0

Well after high school I went into the service and after that I went to college. I started college at 23 years of age. And at that time I was living an hour away from where I went to high school.

This came up on my memories today. Taking my daughter to freshman year. She rode 8 hours hoping the wall didn’t fall on her.
