2015 Toyota Highlander Lease Questions

I have been shopping around for a week or so in metro Chicago. I finally settled on a 2015 Highlander XLE AWD with the captain's chairs for the second row - $275 option. Base on the car is $37,700+275+885(Delvry/Proc/Handl0=$38,860. The Costco price is Sticker of $39,060 discounted to $36,384. The dealer I am working with is giving me a discounted price of $36,900+402.27(doc/plate/title/etc)+$3,000(sales tax)=$40,302. They won't match Costco and I told him that I wanted to lease it with no money down. He told me that he gets to a lease payment of $575/month for a 36 month lease, 10,000 miles. I asked him for the residual and the money factor - $25,259 residual and 5.52% money factor(0.00230x2,400). The residual % equates to 64.7% of the sticker price. This doesn't add up, I think. I am new to leasing. So, any guidance and thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

With the numbers supplied, I get a payment of around $568/mo, so that's pretty close. But, .00230 MF is what's killing this deal. Wow. And, of course, Illinois lease taxes are especially onerous.

I don't have any lease info for Toyota in Illinois, but the Highlander has just about zero lease support, except for the really high residual.. Have you tried another dealer?

Yes, similar result. They say that they input numbers into the system and Toyota generates the result. So, I think I understand that the residual is the $ price that I would have to pay should I elect to purchase the car at the end of the lease term. Right? Since I only put around 6,000 miles on a car a year, I am probably going to purchase it.

Another question, why wouldn't I put any money down on at lease signing which would lower my lease payment?

What is the lease payment if the MF is 0.0018??

Drops the payment by about $35/mo.

I was looking to see if there was any MF/Residual info on a 2014/15 Highlander LE Plus. I'm in NJ and looking at 24/12K or 36/12K. Thanks!

There don't seem to be any published numbers for the Highlander this month. Given how popular they are, I can't say I'm surprised.

My guess is that they'll be expensive to lease.

Hello from Southern California. Does anyone know the current MF and residuals for the XLE models (AWD and FWD, if it makes any difference)? Ideally looking for 12/36 but flexible with mileage/duration if there's a sweet spot. Thanks!

    .00180 MF and 65% residual.

That's a strong residual, but it's only effective for a base model that has an MSRP of $30,300. Toyota residuals are almost impossible to calculate and the higher the MSRP, the lower the effective residual. You actually have to ask the dealer about the exact unit you are interested in, and they look it up on the invoice.

No 2015 Highlander lease information - it's been this way for a month or two. Very popular and I suppose no reason for Toyota to offer any incentives.

We are in NJ and are in the market to lease a 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE with 2nd row captain seats. Our local dealer told us the MF is 0.001375 and the residual is 25,079 with a MSRP of 39,100. We worked out a deal of 469/month based on a dealer price of 37750. I haven't ever leased a car and haven't bought a car in over 15 years. Does this sound ok?

With your numbers, I get a pre-tax payment of $412.62; your quote of $469 seems high, even accounting for sales tax.

Can you confirm that the dealer is using TFS for the lease?

I can't confirm. I just called and our salesperson wasn't there. Another salesperson told me they typically use McGraw for Toyota highlanders with 12k leases. If our monthly payment is $469 including taxes can you help me compute the offer price the lease is based on?
  • ccsbnjccsbnj Member Posts: 5
I also forgot to mention we are only paying for taxes, title and fees plus the first month's payment. No down payment.

As noted above, I'm getting a much lower payment based on the information you've provided. You'll have to ask the dealer to break down their math for you. And, reach out to another Toyota dealer - competition will only help your cause.

No Toyota numbers this month on the Highlander - too popular to support would be my guess.

I got these figures towards Toyota Highlander 2015 XLE FWD, and not sure if these are on the higher side.
So effectively, the dealer toyota at cool springs in Franklin,TN is offering me $471/month for 15k/36M with $3k down payment. The money factor he's offering me is: .0029, which contributes to 6.9% APR, which I think is on the higher side.

I wanted to check with you guys if this payment is on the higher side, or is this reasonable?

    Thanks,

For the SouthEast Toyota distributorship, I show the base money factor for top tier credit to be .00197.

.0029 is ridiculous... should be plenty of Toyota dealers in Nashville... I'd shop around.

I would appreciate any info on December MF/RV for AWD 2015 Highlander XLE in the mid-atlantic. If there is no specific program - the standard MF for top tier credit would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I'm sorry, but we have no Highlander information. Expect high money factors, but also possibly some high residuals.

No supported lease numbers for the Highlander this month.

I was quoted MF= .0018 and residual appx 60-61% on an AWD limited in VA. The residuals vary by sticker, but that may give you a rough idea.

I'm a 2013 Highlander Leasee that has gone back (lease is due in Feb '15) to see what deal I could get on a 2015 Highlander, I was offered...

    2015 Highlander LE AWD
    MSRP 33,370 Residual 21,882 (65.6%) (after 3 years)
$0 "down" but at signing I would be paying $1330 TOTAL upfront in fees (this INCLUDES 1st month)
money factor of 5.4% (I converted it) and I qualify for Tier 1 credit (not the Tier 1+)

I live in the North East

That's probably accurate. Highlanders are popular and therefore not cheap to lease.

I've never leased before, so would appreciate some advice. Looking at 2014 or 2015 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited. I live in Las Vegas, but am willing to travel regionally if the deal would be better. What type of lease terms should I expect?

We don't have any specific numbers, but the Highlander is one of the most popular - and hard to keep in stock - models from Toyota.

So, expect leasing to be expensive.

Has anything Changed in regards to finding information about the Toyota Highlander MF/RV infomration, or is it still in high demand.

I live in the DFW area and am looking to lease a FWD Limited Platinum and would like to know what I am working with. They have 6 of them on the lot, so maybe I have some play, maybe not; at least 4 dealership in a 20 mile radius in DFW...

Thanks for the service you guys provide.

We have RV information - 59% for 36/15 on the FWD Limited Platinum. No MF information, which leads me to believe that it will still be pretty expensive to lease.

What lease term? How many miles per year?

Toyota dealers can use TFS, but they are not required to.

Use the pricing tools at the top of the page (make / model / year) to help establish a target price. Net cap cost is the target price adjusted for any additional taxes and fees, minus any down payment.

I've answered some of these questions already. Can't give you a payment without knowing the MSRP or selling price.

To compare it to the Honda, we'd also need to know the MSRP and selling price of the car you are interested in.

We have RV information - 59% for 36/15 on the FWD Limited Platinum. No MF information, which leads me to believe that it will still be pretty expensive to lease.
I have a dealer giving me information over e-mail, which is amazing to me right now. Here is what he said for the Highlander Limited Platinum with some specific information on a 12k/36m lease including MF and residual, looks like there is some bumping going on with MF, but wanted to ask the experts their opinion. I am just looking for a fair deal, so I hope you can help... I calculate a RV of 58% based on the example of the car below.
From the dealer in the DFW area...

Rates for Highlander with Tier 1+ Credit are .00170
Equating to a 4.08% interest rate
Unfortunately there are never any incentivized lease rates on Highlander

36 month 12K mile Residual is $25,821 The vehicle below is the one I used.

We have heard of MSD's but they are a nightmare to do, because of all the hoops to jump thru we stay away from them.

    Model - 6955 LIMITED PLT - V
Exterior Color - 0070 BLIZZARD PEARL
    Interior Color - LA00 Ivory

    MSRP
    Base: 43,280.00
    Installed Options: $1,215.00
    Total: $44,495.00
My calculations at a 6.25% tax rate (Which I have to pay in Texas) on the agreed upon value of lets say $42000 = $ 2625.00
He mentioned a documentation and title fee of the following:
$279.50 For Titling, Registration, and Doc Fees
So I would pay the taxes, fees and first month of lease up front. I want to do security deposits to lower the MF, but that is not going well as you can read from above.

    Can you check my math?

Leaving all taxes and other fees out I calculate a $564.71 monthly payment. I would pay the following to drive out First Lease Payment + Taxes + Fees.

This is without MSDs, Each MSD will most likely be $600.00 so I am thinking $3,000 for 5 MSDs to lower my MF to 0.00120 (at least) and thus lowering the monthly payment to $530.80. This would require a $6,435.30 to drive out which seems lofty, but I would get $3,000 back at the return of the lease. This is based on the below calculation:
Adjusted First Lease Payment + Taxes + Fees + 5xMSD
Is it strange to pay taxes all up front or do most include taxes in their loan? What is your opinion on the MSD value to reduce the MF? Any comments on the math from your perspective?

As always, thank you to everyone for what you do!

It's nice that you're working with a Toyota dealer that is so forthcoming with their information.

Texas is one of a few states that taxes the entire selling price of a car for a lease (GA and MD are the other two). This greatly increases your monthly payment when compared to a similar lease in a different state. You can choose to pay those taxes up front at lease inception or add them into the cap cost and pay it off over the life of the lease.

I have no knowledge of an MSD program for Toyota. Given the high base MF for the Highlander, I can't say I'm surprised that one exists.

Using the $44,495 as the MSRP and $42,000 as the net cap cost, along with a 58% residual and .00170 MF, I get a monthly payment of $565.07 - remarkably close to your estimate.

If you're comfortable with the selling price, no reason not to do this deal. Highlanders are expensive to lease under the best of terms; just worse given that you live in Texas.

Texas is a great state, I pay taxes on a lease by have no state income tax, so it all breaks even in the end.

Well a new detail just crept in, I was asking if the financing was through Toyota and he stated the following...
It is thru Toyota, Standard State Tax of 6.25% plus fees of $924.50
So I Guess TTL just got a big boost from $279.50 to $924.50, is that most likely the inception fee of $645 on top of the other fees? Probably not something I can argue too much.

The dealer keeps typing "thru" instead of "through", I don't know why that bothers me

Their MSD program by the way lowers MF by 0.00008 per deposit. He indicated that Toyota has a standard deposit of $475 per reduction and can go up to 9 MSDs, which would not be a bad thing. So MF of 0.00098 (from 0.00170) with a $4275.00 MSD... I will crunch the numbers to see where I maximize my MSD value.

Some good news was that he agreed to give 7% off of MSRP which takes the agreed upon price from $44,495 value to $41,380.35; Not too shabby for a highly rated vehicle per many publications and loaded to boot.

At that price it really comes down to Lease or Buy now...

My intent is to return or sell in 3 years so I can have Apple CarPlay in my next vehicle, a very critical feature in my next purchase so that my phone can actually be really useful in the car and not gimped by auto manufactures terrible dash technology. I wanted it this time, but I am a year too early.

If that is my plan, should I buy or lease? Thoughts?

Appreciate the confirmation on our monthly lease estimate, not too sure why I am off, but at that difference it must be a dollar somewhere?

I will come back with updated numbers later today... It is getting exciting.

Here is what a dealer is proposing for my lease of a highlander limited platinum in Los Angeles. Separate of def not putting down 3 grand upfront am I crazy or are the numbers a little off. The only way I can get to 560 is to put the money factor pretty high in my little calculator.
Seams like a bad deal to me, thoughts?

The base MF for the Highlander is around .00160, so pretty high when compared to other makes and models.

Agreed, $560/mo is a lot for a Toyota.

I am having difficulty getting exactly the numbers for the monthly payment of $560.03? But I am close using my spreadsheet.

Including your tax in the loan I calculate a payment of $560.26.

This is based on the loan being calculated from the MSRP $43,540, Agreed Upon Price $41,185, CAP cost Reduction (Down Payment of $3,000), 12k/36Month, RV of 59% ($25,821.00), MF 0.0015, Doc Fee ($80), Acquisition Fee ($650), $3,396.21 in CA Taxes.

I do see a "RATE" line on your screenie that indicates 1.8 which would actually translate to a 0.00075 MF which is the lowest I have ever seen, so that must mean something else? Perhaps a purchase APR versus a lease rate? Based on the numbers however I seem to be calculating a MF of 0.0015 which is better than I have seen in DFW for MF values.

When I calculate depreciation ($17,719.00) and multiply it by MF x 36 months I get a rental fee of 956.83 which does seem low to me, so perhaps your MF is higher, but a factor of 0.0001 but that seems fairly insignificant?

So how did the $560.03 get calculated?

The price you agreed to with your dealer is a little more than 5% below MSRP. That is good, but I think they could knock of 2 more percent on the agreed upon price unless demand is still high. I would try and shoot for 6-7% discount from MSRP to help lower the cost, but my math shows $560.26 with $3,000 down.
