    You got your Honda for 18393 + 384 = 18777 plus tax/tag.

The invoice for that car is 18430 and transportation is 515, for a total of 18945.

So it look like you got your car for about $170 under invoice. Since I am used to paying about $250 over invoice, I think your price is very good.

Thanks for the information. I have never done car-buying over the internet, but I will try it in January and see if my experience is as good as yours.

I've bought 4 accords since 1993 and I've always paid below invoice including my 05 EX-L navi last Oct.
  • 3c33c3 Member Posts: 76
When we talk about "invoice price", destination charge is usually included. I have never received a quote or discussed any price with the dealer without the destination charge.

I'm glad that California limits doc+tire fee to $50.
  • ktnrktnr Member Posts: 255
I didn't realize that "invoice price" includes the destination fee. If that's the case, then Grand Honda in Chicago is selling the '05 Accord LX 4-dr automatic at $612 under invoice! My understanding is that Honda isn't offering any dealer holdback on '05 models. I'll leave it to someone better informed than I to explain how that's possible.

Anyway, all I did was cross-shop area Honda dealers via E-mail for the lowest price. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I should have cross-shopped all the area Toyota dealers too and used their lowest bid on a comparable Camry in my negotiations for an Accord.

Many of these low price posts don't mention a trade-in which seems odd. I would have thought that most people do have a trade-in when buying a car and that's where dealers count on making money. I was fortunate enough to have my old car totaled in an interstate pile-up caused by a semi and I used the insurance payoff as a cash down payment on the car I've been wanting anyway.

Hello, can anyone tell me whether I'm on the right track here? I'm shopping for the 05 Accord EX w/Leather and Navi, MSRP is $29215, invoice is $25835 and dest. is $515. Est. tax & lic fees (according to Edmunds TVM) sre $2295. Grand total comes to $28645, assuming my figures are right for the tax & lic. What should I be willing to pay OTD? I am also looking at an 04 that they agreed to the price of $27500 OTD for, but the financing is higher. Any advice??? Thanks!

    Hi Ktnr:

___Dest. is included in Grand’s pricing and I don’t know where you heard that holdback disappeared for the 05 Honda’s but something that drastic would have hit the automotive world like an earthquake. I am sure more would have heard about it.

___If you want to talk TIV’s, all bets are off because most will get fleeced by $1,000 - $4,000 or more in that scenario on the trade alone. A trade is only worth what they can be purchased for at the next auction no matter how great the condition. Go read some of Terry’s auction and TIV posts in the RWTIV thread.

All I knew of is 1.9% financing on '05 models and a $1,300 incentive on '04 leftovers. Edmunds says there is currently no manufacturer-to-dealer marketing support for '05 Accords.

I guess that I misunderstood what holdback is. I looked it up online just now and it appears that Honda provides dealers with 3% holdback on total MSRP.

For a 2005 Accord LX sedan w/automatic, with a total MSRP of $20,990, 3% is $630. Less my price $170 below invoice and the dealer made $460 on my purchase (the car had been only recently delivered to the dealer). My understanding is that holdback is roughly equal to 90-days of floorplan interest. I can see then why dealers are anxious to turn inventory quickly.

Thanks for making this clearer. I see now how people are able to buy below invoice.

    Hi Muzik,
Did you get the Accord w/Navigation or without? I'm trying to get a feel for what I should pay, looking at getting the EX, V6 w/leather & navi. Figured you would know since you are from so. cal. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks :)

    Hi Ktnr:

___I wish I knew how Honda dealerships can survive on less then full HB because there sure are a lot of them doing just that nowadays! Isellhondas is saying there are no internal incentives on the Accord and when you start talking a total profit of $500.00 on a $20 - $25,000 investment as well as paying the interest as it sits, extra staff, lights, property taxes, mortgage on the building, paying the salesman somehow??? etc. and you don’t know how long it will take to sell, $500 looks awfully small imho. The “Ask a Car Dealer” forum experts are saying dealerships are making there money on Used cars and the Mechanics so they are making money but it appears not to be from new car sales?

___When I was at the Honda dealership here in Gurnee, IL. tonight, I saw a brand new white 04 EX w/ a 5-speed stick (that’s going to hurt) and Curtains sitting on the showroom floor. I know why it was on the showroom floor and I know if they are going to eventually move it, they are probably going to be losing more then just their shirt. Invoice = $20,290 - $1,300 (04 Rebate) – $594 (3% HB on invoice not incl. dest.) = $18,396 + $490 (dest.) = $18,886. If it had a gray interior (only available w/ Graphite, Blue, or Red), I might consider making a loss leader type offer of say $17,700 or so on or around the middle of January after a 9” snowstorm and its been 10 below 0 for the last 3 or 4 days ;-) It has the wrong color interior, it is not exactly what I am looking for, and it is not a PZEV unfortunately :-(

___I am dreaming of course :D

    ___Good Luck

Your dealer made $460 on your purchase because you paid $384 for doc fee. In CA, we can buy the car at your purchase price (or less) with only $45 doc fee. How much is the dealer really making? $121 (or less)? I don't think so.
  • muzikmuzik Member Posts: 5
I haven't bought yet. They only have w/o navi in the color I like for $24,300 plus tax and the other stuff. That is around invoice or a hair below. I'm not going to fight anymore...looking to buy this week, maybe tomorrow. I'll let everyone know how it goes. They want almost full retail to add the navi.

Looking for dealers or salesman in St. Louis that anyone can recommend (or stay away from.)
  • cheapiamcheapiam Member Posts: 11
I can only advise that in NJ, you can pickup a 4D EXL V6 for $23990 with 1.9% Honda Financing(NO TRADE). The balance consisted of 6% Sales Tax, $119 Doc fees (ok - higher than some $49) and approximately $250 for a 4 year Tag (Standard in NJ these days on all new vehicles). So even if you take out the potential padding of $70 for Doc fees, the price was $24060. No idea of the cost of NAV, but only 3% seem to even buy it these days.

Hope you get it for less than the $24300 quoted.

I didn't notice any STL Accord shoppers, but here's a link listing posts by members who purchased a Pilot in St. Louis. Many have reported positive experiences at Huey's. Although I didn't purchase a Honda, I did shop for one and found Huey's staff friendly and pricing competitive.

I live in NY, Westchester County and just purchased a Honda Accord LX for $18,900 excluding sales tax and tags with 60 months 1.9% financing. I think this price is just about at invoice+Destination costs.
  • kwietstorm6kwietstorm6 Member Posts: 11
I am going to look and test drive a 2000 Accord coupe ex with 50,667 miles on it. Dealer is asking for $13995 (+ tax tags) for it. It does fall in all the book values (nada, kbb and edmonds)for certified.

    $13995 @ 7%
    $975.65
    =$14974
    +$118 (title fees)
    =$15092 their price

Do you think my lowest offer on the price of $13000 (not incl a 1K-1200 down payment) is too low or can I go lower? Have been researching for awhile and I am trying to figure this out. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Just got an internet offer for a 2005 Accord EX-L.

    $22,061 + Tax/Tags (in PA)

IS it possible to beat this?

    Hi Jgarmd:

___Not by much from my reads! The weekly deal from the Chicagoland area Honda dealership I use for comparison has the EX-L at $21,888 + TTL this week.

I am still looking myself but I got quotes from Hueys and others in area that include a dealer installed protection package. The cost for this package is $305.00 it includes the trunk tray, splash guards, and wheel locks. They say they won't sell without it. I am not paying for something I don't want. Keep me posted tld.
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
That's a good deal if there's no high "document" fee to pack the price. If it's $22,061 total, plus only the tax and license fees that don't go to the dealer, then the deal looks very good.

The Accord EX-L (I have the '04) is an outstanding car....Richard
  • susanssusans Member Posts: 5
This forum has been very helpful thus far, but I have one key question before purchasing tomorrow. I am not sure whether this price is good because they are exclusive of the destination fee. If anyone could look this over & let me know if I should continue negotiating the price, that would be great.

'05 Accord EX w/ leather sedan:
$22,015 (which I had to negotiate)
    $515 destination (taxable)
    $230 "writers fee" (non-taxable)

I live in Boston. Tax is 5%. I have no trade-in. I was approved for the 1.9% APR for 60 months.

(I still may chicken out an get an LX for much less when I get there tomorrow. Their quote for that is 18,644 + destination, tax, and writers fee. I will not buy that car unless they offer close to 18K based on what I've read here.)
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
It's the "writer's fee" that makes this an OK, but not great deal at this time.

Everybody MUST pay transportation, so that's really part of the car's cost.

The "writer's fee" is pure revenue for the dealer and packs the price--here in California, that fee is limited by law to $50 (including a $5 tire disposal fee).

So, you're really paying $22,760 plus TTL (costs that the dealer must pay to government entities).

In August, 2003, I bought the same car--the 2004 EX-L--for $22,700 + TTL which is only $60 less than your deal. Transportation cost was $460 at that time and there might also have been a very slight difference in the invoice price (mine is a PZEV which was about $150 more than non-PZEV).

So you have essentially the same deal now that I had almost 16 months ago which was good at that time.

In reading the posts here, it seems that slowing sales, competition, that the Accord is now in the third year of its 5 year cycle, and traditionally favorable December pricing, have made the car somewhat cheaper than it was a year ago--but not by much.

The LX is probably the best deal, dollar for dollar, but you'll enjoy the EX-L MUCH more, I think.

I wanted an LX, but picked the EX-L because I insisted on having side curtain airbags which weren't available on LXs last year (they're standard on the LX now).

The leather interior, 8-way power seat, dual climate control with automatic feature, alloy wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, etc. make the EX-L much more of a near-luxury car. If you can afford it, go for the EX-L.......Richard
  • susanssusans Member Posts: 5
Thanks so much for the response. I will negotiate for a better price. I don't think it will be too difficult.

I also appreciate the comments on EX-L vs LX. I know the price is much higher, but I do think I'll like the EX-L much more. Thanks for the pep talk.
  • 3c33c3 Member Posts: 76
Price is way too high. Invoice price is $22,561. Carsdirect.com price for my region is $21,961. Buying directly from dealer should be less than carsdirect.com. All prices include destination. Check carsdirect.com with your zipcode.
  • clovisguyclovisguy Member Posts: 49
A dealer in the 93611 area is advertising the 05' EX-L AT with PZEX for $22696 or invoice plus fees. That is $140 more then the carsdirect price.
  • susanssusans Member Posts: 5
Actually the carsdirect price is just a few dollars more than what this dealer offered. I guess Boston is a little more costly. Still, I will try to negotiate a few hundred less. Thanks for the responses.

I just took delivery on a 2005 Graphite Pearl Accord EX-L. The final price was $ 21,672 + Tax/Tags. The dealer claimed he lost $25.00 on the deal (YEAH RIGHT). There is no way a dealer sells a car if they are gonna lose monry. He claimed that hey just needed volume so that os why they let the car go at that price. Previous to this they would not budge off of $22,061, untill I found an out of town dealer to beat that price. They tried like ALL HELL to suck me into some rust proofing and Extra Warranty purchase. They claimed that they ordinarily would have rejected my offer, but that they needed the "numbers" this month. I don't know of this was the best deal I could have gotten, but I just didn't want to drag this out any longer. What do you all think? I still think the "car dealership" business is sham and contend these guys make a $hit load on every car, they just hide it better. Perhaps the salesman is not making the big profit, but someone is. Thoughts?

I have an email quote (absolutely no haggling) for a EX-L, V4, automatic for 21898 (+ tax, tags, fees)in silicon valley. I expect the fees to be low (CA standard is $45 for doc and $5 for tire). Comments on the price ? carsdirect.com for silicon valley is 21961 so this is $63 less than that...

    Hi Jgarmd:

___You received a great deal so just be happy that you did as well as you did. Shysters is a common description but a bit extreme in this case considering what the dealership and the salesman actually earned vs. your Insurance Company over the next (your age of death – today’s date) years or the profit given to Circuit City on that Big Screen HDTV you might have purchased last month …

___Remember that your Honda salesmen has to send his/her kids to college, place food on the table, and purchase Christmas presents just like you, I, and Isellhondas.

    ___Good Luck

That's lower than last year's price for the same car. I paid $22,700 (including the $50 doc fee) plus tax and license for the '04 EX-L 4 in August,'03 right after the introduction of the 2004s.

My deal from S.F. Honda was actually pretty good at that time--about $238 over invoice.

That was at the start of the Accord's second year of its current style and demand was stronger then. It looks like Accord sales are slower this year and especially this December.

I think your deal is very good.......Richard

Is that quote from Autowest Honda (Fremont)? If not, you should get one for comparison.

    Wayne:

Thanks for the post. In reality I was treated very well by the dealership (it was the 2nd car I bought from them in the last 1 year). I guess I just NEVER trust what they say is the invioice price. Yes, I know that I should not care if they make a profit, etc..but I just hate the fact that it is a game too see how much money they can make off of me. Yes, I understand this is America and is Capitalism, but it always feels so shady.

I truly believe that the dealers/salesman make FAR more money that they say, and for this reason I am always trying to "cut into" that margin. Oh well, these are my issues. I love the car so that is what matters. I am encouraged now that I feel I got a "fair" deal. Thanks for all of your responses.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
You did get an opinion from someone who sells Hondas...me.

The tone of your post reeks of bitter hostility. You seem more concerned over that a dealer "might" have made than the good value you received. There are no secret profits that someone took from you.

    Again, I'm glad I wasn't your salesperson.

I hope you can now relax a bit and start enjoying your new car. Life is short...

I want to thank you for being here and providing the insights and perspective that you do.

You are probably not the only car enthusiast visiting this site that happens to sell cars for a living. However, rather than lurking or hiding yourself, you're open about being a Honda salesperson and you've been willing to be a resource to members of this forum.

    Thanks for your participation.

Thanks richards38 and 3c3 for responding to my questions about the quote of 21890 for a V4 EX-L in Silicon Valley. My quote is from South Bay Honda. I will call AutoWest Honda this morning for a comparison - thanks for the suggestion. Also, I have to go in today to make sure the quote is "real" and applies to all similar cars on their lot (not for just that one car, which happens to have been sold just before I get there). So far my experience with them has been excellent, I will post later today how it holds up. Thanks for all the help on this forum !

My local Honda dealers says he can finance me through Honda Finance at 9-10% even though I have a recently (4-months ago) discharged bankruptcy. The catch, I must put 30% down on the car. I do have enough cash (ok, cake) for the 30%. Some questions:

Can anyone confirm this is true or has anyone done this before?

and Is the 30% on the purchase price or the "out the door price" ?

I'm trying to keep the number of inquiries down as I rebuild credit. Household bank said OK at 19% (tooo high!) another Eloans, just said no. I hope this dealer thing works?, Thanks for any advice, Kathy
