"I read that there is a $1500 dealer rebate through Jan. 2..."

Really? On 2005 Accords? If that's the case, suddenly $50 under invoice doesn't sound so great! Do you have a link to this info?

Almost every used car is sold at auction.. That is where dealers get their late model used cars.. That way they get exactly what they need for their inventory.. Almost every car you trade in to a dealer gets sent to the auction as well..

I priced a 2005 Accord EXA4 on carsdirect.com and it is $400 below invoice. However, the more loaded ones have less of a discount. $1500 dealer incentive seems like a lot on a 2005 and I too want to know more? Honda must want to do something to not come in second place against the Camry this year. Also, the Toyota and Nissan incentives end this month so look for better ones from them for December. It is true you can get good deals close to New Years Eve but the selection might not be as good. So if you know what you want it is a good idea to at least make a deposit to locate something by Christmas.

It's hard to tell who is getting what deals where without ZIP codes. Rebates and Incentives are regionalized. What ZIP codes are you shopping in?
I'm in the 22405 ZIP code. The only incentives here on the 2005 Accord here is low APR.

Back in January of 2004, I got a 2004 Accord EX V6 with navigation for $27,374 OTD, or $25,251 before taxes, tags, and other fees at College Park Honda. Haggle some more.

I placed a deposit on a 2005 Honda Accord LX V6 Sedan, and continued to research prices. Before I took delivery, I learned about the safety recall concerning the driver's airbag, which the salesperson HAD NOT communicated to me. I was advised that the vehicles affected are ALL 2004 Accord L4 4-door vehicles, as well as certain 2005 Accord L4 4-door vehicles. In order to complete the sale, the dealership dropped its price further to compete with the Cars Direct price. As I would not complete the purchase unless I qualified for the 1.9% APR financing, the contract was not binding until I signed the finance agreement. Don't be too quick to sign. It's not over until...
  • ktnrktnr Member Posts: 255
Honda currently offers $1,500 cash back on certain 2004 leftovers. On 2005 models, they're offering 1.9% APR for up to 60 months to qualified buyers (credit score of 720 or higher).

Personally, I thought CarsDirect was a joke. By surveying area Honda dealers via E-mail, I was quickly able to find which dealer had the lowest internet prices. CarsDirect later admitted to me over the phone that they'd be getting the car from that same dealer, at that same price, and then tacking on a $500 markup to cover their end. In my case, $500 would have been a lot to pay for somebody else to send a dozen e-mails on my behalf. To their credit, the guy on the phone was honest about it.

Ultimately, I got my 2005 Accord for $168 below dealer invoice and destination together(plus tax and tag). Again, CarsDirect would have been $500 higher than that.

Research the dealer "holdback". Several sites I've seen currently show a holdback of 3% of the base MSRP for Hondas. So depending on how long a car has been in a dealer's inventory (1, 2, or 3 months), he can make 1%, 2%, or 3% of base MSRP. For an LX 4-dr auto, that would be $614.25 at the 3% rate (MSRP = $20475).

That's how they can sell for below invoice.
  • trekkiemonstertrekkiemonster Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the information. If you have any sources to determine whether or not a "holdback" is available on the 2005 Honda Accord LX V6 Sedan, I'd certainly be interested in learning about them.

Several dealers in SoCal are offering 60 month, zero pct financing through Honda Finance. Should I expect this will result in a higher price?
  • clovisguyclovisguy Member Posts: 49
Yes and No. You can still get a deal close to invoice and obtain the 100% financing saving you at least $1500 on financing charges. However, if the dealer was getting an incentive to sell the cars for less the price could be well below invoice. The 0% financing is just a traffic builder because most people with very good credit aren't going to qualify unless they put a large down payment. The Honda Dealer in Fresno advertised 0% financing with 0 down for 60 months but dropped the zero down last weekend. I bet they got a bunch of pissed off people with very good credit that couldn't qualify or were upside down in their trade still expecting to get out of them without cash.

Does anyone have experience or an opinion regarding the V6 versus the 4 cylinder engine offered with the Accord. I know there is a 3 mpg difference in gas mileage and a significantly higher starting price but is is worth it? Pros and cons? Thanks
  • tcvb22tcvb22 Member Posts: 50
The insurance for the V6 is about $40 more a year with my current insurance company.
  • dschekdschek Member Posts: 11
    tcvb22,
Are you looking for 4 dr ?
    I paid 25,660 OTD (7%) tax for 05 4dr ex v6 :)
  • brownsfanbrownsfan Member Posts: 3
I bought the same car but the '04 model (the only difference is the side air bags are standard on the '05 model) with mudgards for $16,500. I'm in the cleveland area and had to beat them up pretty bad to get that price. their best offer before I tried to walk out was 17275.
  • richards38richards38 Member Posts: 606
Look through the comments posted in this forum to read many comments about 4 vs V6.

The bottom line is that you MUST test drive both of them before buying if it really matters to you. I did not test drive both prior to buying my 2004 Accord EX-L 4 sedan with AT because it was fast enough for me.

I finally drove a V6 a few weeks ago and have no regrets about buying the 4 cylinder car.

If you expect to carry many passengers, fill the trunk with heavy luggage, pull a trailer, or pass slow vehicles on 2 lane roads, then perhaps the V6 would be the better choice.

I think most people would be well served by the 4 which is very quick, smooth, quiet, and refined...........Richard

I was able to get a Honda Accord 2004 LX AT sedan for 17,500 (18,300 OTD). I know that this is after the fact, but was this a good deal? I was kinda winging it with my negotiations. Basically, I'm a first time car buyer and I was solo.
  • ktnrktnr Member Posts: 255
The $3,300 premium to get the LX-V6 over the 4-cylinder LX works out to about $2 per day every day for five years.

Consumer Guide lists fuel mileage for BOTH engines at the same 22.4mpg in mostly city driving and 26.1 mostly highway. Personally, I'm doing a little better than that with my 4-cylinder at 28mpg mixed city/highway.

Besides price, the only downsides I can see for the V6 are slightly worsened handling (reported in Edmund's Editor's Review of the 2003), a timing belt which has to be replaced at 105,000 miles (the 4-cylinder uses a chain instead), and the low and mid-range torque is less than I'd expect given the 240hp-rating.

In my experience, downsides for the 4-cylinder are some vibration and "thrumming" below 2,000rpm. Also, I can definitely tell when the A/C compressor is on - something I'm sure I'd notice less, if at all, with a bigger engine.

Both are great engines but I'd say it comes down to whether value or luxury/performance is your priority. There's little doubt that the 4-cylinder represents a better absolute value. However, even a fully-loaded EX-V6 is a great value in a mid-size, near-luxury performance sedan.

When test driving both engines, I'd encourage you to keep the A/C on and note the low-end, off-idle differences the feel of each. In handling, the heavier V-6 is a trade off between feeling more substantial and yet also understeering more. I'm confident that a majority of buyers would choose the V-6 if cost wasn't an issue.

17,500 is way way way too high at this time. My quote was lower than that in August.

    dschek,

Yes I'm looking for a 4 dr EX V6. Can you tell me where you got that price and the zipe code. Thanks.
  • glohgloh Member Posts: 3
Oh well. Live and learn. I'm just blessed to have a new car. That was the only dealer in my area that had a 2004 LX AT Accord. Another reason why I was winging it. Guess I could have posted here before I went to the dealer. Thanks for the info.
  • ktnrktnr Member Posts: 255
Without side and side-curtain airbags, the 2004 Accord received a rating of "Poor" in the IIHS's side-impact crash test (driver sustained multiple serious head and internal injuries).

For 2005, the Accord now has front, side, and side-curtain airbags standard across the model line (along with variable inflation force, dual-threshold deployment, and out-of-position sensors). With all six airbags, the IIHS rated the Accord "Good" (low risk of injury) in the same severe crash.

Why were you eager to buy a left-over 2004 model without side-curtain airbags?
  • glohgloh Member Posts: 3
The 2004 Accord LX has side airbags, just not side-curtain airbags. I was aware that this was the only real difference between the 2004 and 2005 models. I was looking at price. In my investigations of dealerships, I found that generally speaking, 2005 models were $19000. That's $1500 more than the 2004 model (well, for the price I got). I guess I should say, I went in looking for a certified used 2003 Accord that was priced at $16500. So in my mind, I got a deal.

sounds like you got a great deal.....congrats on the new ride......what do you think your best price would've been on a 2005 LX automatic? I'm starting to shop this weekend in S. Florida, and local dealer internet email offers coming in at $18700 ......what do you think a is realistic price to shoot for, considering its a new model?

Please advise of the particulars. I have been quoted $24300 plus tax, tag & docs for a 05-EXV6Auto

I feel there is some more wiggle room. Any suggestions?
  • ktnrktnr Member Posts: 255
My mistake - I thought buyers had to get the 2004 EX to get side airbags.

Most side airbags when used alone are large enough to provide head protection for the driver. Thus, side-curtain airbags hold little advantage for front seat occupants or small children properly seated in the safest rear-center position.

Sounds like you got a deal then.

I recently purchased a 2005 Accord LX. I started shopping several months ago. I was offered 2004 Accords at absolutely smoking prices, but I had to have the side bags and side curtain bags in the 2005. What is an extra $2K when you life is on the line?
  • ac2005ac2005 Member Posts: 5
I was quoted $22,000 for an EX-L AT. How does this rate for a first offer?

What is the actual invoice price of this car? Most sites I've seen list $22,047 but I was told $22,697 by a dealer.

And for those who have experienced both, what are the pros/cons of leather over cloth? Thanks.

Puchased a 2005 Accord Sedan LX 4cyl 5spd for 17925 before ttl at John Elway Honda in Westminster, Colorado. This is 300 under invoice and includes a 300 handling fee that they backed out of the price. Out the door was 19100. I used FIGHTINGCHANCE.COM to help me with the purchase. I saved a bundle of money and alot of my time by not having to deal with floor salesman and instead deal with the fleet/sales managers of the dealerships. I would reccomend James Braggs service to anyone wanting to go into a deal with confidence.

Thanks for the tip. We may be driving to MD (from NOVA) if we can't talk a local dealer into a lower price. Ahh one more question. Is the Nav worth the extra money?, kath

Purchased the car last night(11/30/04) from Spirit Honda in SoCal for $750 below invoice + ttl and 1.9% financing with 0 down.

I emailed local dealers two weeks ago and received quotes for $400 and $500 below invoice. I thanked all of them and told them I would review all offers and make my decision shortly. I waited until the last day of the month and made an appointment with Spirit. The internet department called me back and told me they were aggressively selling their cars and offered me $750 below invoice(I assume that price was good for yesterday only).

    PS
Thanks to everyone that has posted here. The information I found in this forum has helped me research my new car and gave me the confidence to attain a great price.
  • palegreenpalegreen Member Posts: 7
With all of these deals for below invoice, many of which also exceed the dealer holdback, I think there's gotta be a dealer incentive kicking around. Does anyone have the inside scoop? It'd be a great help in negotiations.

    ngm,

Can you provide the details of your final purchase price? eg. destination, title, plates, documentation fee, etc. I plan to go into Spirit Honda this weekend and I'd like an idea of what those numbers should look like. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I saw where you can get up to three internet bids from cars.com for free. They also, advertise in the Fresno Bee. Does anyone have experience with them or know the pros and cons? Thanks
  • ac2005ac2005 Member Posts: 5
    Thanks ngm,

How do you like your new car? Was your experience at Spirit a good one?
  • jmainesjmaines Member Posts: 2
OUT THE DOOR--Readers should list this as the actual price NOT including Tax, Title & Tags, because this varies from state to state. OTD should include only the car price with the Doc or prep fee included. These fees may vary from $45 to $350 and can make or break a deal.
  • 3c33c3 Member Posts: 76
"Out the door", by definition, includes everything. People should report the following for comparison: MSRP and/or invoice, purchase price, doc/prep fee, rebate. Tax and registration are fixed by the region, not negotiable, and therefore, meaningless.
  • ngmngm Member Posts: 3
    ac2005,

My experience at Spirit was great. Their walk-on car lot is small and they are currently under construction, but they have their inventory within a block or so. They apologized for the inconvenience, asked me what color car I was interested in and had one available to test drive within a few minutes. Throughout the process they were very nice and made me feel at ease. I never felt pressured or obligated to buy from them.

I got a very good quote from Herb Chambers on a 2005 EX V6 and was wondering if anyone has purchased a car from this dealership. It's a 2 hr drive for me so I want to make sure the dealership is reputable. I don't want waste my time if I take the drive. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

If you want to find some info on Herb Chambers quickly, I suggest using the advanced search feature (on the left side of the page). Search for "herb chambers," and make sure you click the "message text" option. We've had a lot of other Honda buyers report shopping experiences there.
