I'm in the process of donating my car to charity. The tax write-off benefit will be more than the dealer was willing to give me. I typically drive cars for a long time, until the maintenance becomes excessive. I do not choose to sell cars myself as I do not want potentially undesirable people showing up at my house at night for a test drive.

Depending on the condition of your 91 Accord, you should be able to get at least $1000 on a trade if not a little more.

Let us know exactly how much your cousin paid and what the dealers in Georgia are charging. If you save more than $1000, you might as well buy it out of state and have a shipping company ship it to you for $500-$1000(that's from east coast to west coast for 1k)

This post is awesome. Totally helped me in my 2hr negotiation battle with Honda World. I went in with a price of 400 over invoice (seemed to be ave of what everyone else was paying on this discussion). They were amazed at what I knew about the car and what others were paying. They tried to tell me this wasn't accurate, that prices are different throuout the country, yada yada yaada. Even tried to tell me that other people might be paying 300-500 over but no one at Honda World is buying them that cheap. So after threatening to walk and go to one of the other 50 Honda dealers in so cal we settled on $500 over Invoice (what's $100 over 6 yrs?).

    23675 invoice
    500 over
    24175 total

Edmunds is awesome. Hopefully the auto makers won't force them to quit the town hall postings.

Let me know which Atlanta dealers are dealing for under invoice or close to it and a contact name if possible. I'm coincidentally going to Atlanta on business Sun day through Friday. I'll check them out. If they walk the walk, maybe I'll buy one from them. Thanks!

    Hey,
I'm leaning toward getting an accord with NAVI and wondering what you guys think is a good price to lock in (as that's what was asked). I'm thinking if I'm willing to put down a deposit a month before they get the car (and thus they get the holdback money), I'll only pay them 25,100 or so, as I'd seen the non-NAVI EX-V6 as cheap as $23,474. Guesses as to if that price, or better, is being had?
  • robtflrobtfl Member Posts: 36
Invoice on an EX V6 w/ navi 4dr. runs $25,012.03 plus add $460 shipping costs. I don't think you'll find many players for that number.

You can buy a new car from out of state without paying state sales tax until you register your vehicle in your state of residence. I've bought cars from Ohio, Missouri, & Oklahoma and paid no sales tax until I registered in my home state (Maryland 5%). I drive away with a 45 day temp tag.

I have been wanting to find out what the invioce is in Canada but there seems to be nothing on the internet, so just want to see if anyone could tell me where I can find that informtaion.
In the US, I understand that dealerships are selling at a 10% profit margin but I've heard that it's less than 10% here in Canada, is that right?
  • compuman1compuman1 Member Posts: 26
Thank you guys for all the information to help us find a better deal than we can get here in Florida.

robtfl, I don't have the name of any dealers in Atlanta but since carsdirect guaranteed price in GA is $200 below invoice for an EX-L4, I guess they will tell you which dealer to go to that will honor their price. Keep us posted !

    Thanks

    Hey all,
those going to Atlanta, please report back about how it was with the dealerships. I'm likely to go down and buy from Hennesey Honda but am waiting on a nice graphite V6 with NAVI. If you pick up a EX-V6 in Grahpite your buying my car... or at least the one I was initially going to get until I started leaning towards NAVI. Tell them they do right by you and I'm on my way.

Well anyway, please let us know how they were as I don't want to go down there for nothing if they play games.

I am looking to buy an accord EX-L I4 automatic in orange county, CA. Carsdirect.com shows almost 1000 over invoice which seems too high. People who live in orange county who bought an 03 accord recently, could you please post the prices you paid and name of the dealership you bought the car from and your experience with the dealer? Thanks in advance.
  • elcarionelcarion Member Posts: 2
That was with little negotiation! They were very willing to negotiate against Toyota (and another local Honda dealer.)
It may also be due to Honda Motor Company having to restate their sales projections on 10/29. Their stock dropped 12% afterwards!

I have a question for the ones buying there cars out of state. If you're trading in when you return to your state do you own pay the difference between your trade in and the new car?
    Ex. 20,000 new car - 15,000 trade in = 5000 taxable amount.

I may head on up to Atlanta if I can strike a deal.

    Thanks!

    Hey juzuboka
I've been trying to find the same information. Has anyone bought a new Accord in Canada? Does anyone know the invoice price or the dealers margin?

    Thanks
  • slick505slick505 Member Posts: 11
Anyone bought it recently? Want to know how much you paid.

If not, what I expect to payfor '03 model? invoice + dest. is $21,159.
  • ajrosenajrosen Member Posts: 10
Slick - Just picked up my 2003 EX-V6 from Boch Honda in Norwood (I live in Newport, RI). Got it for $24000, $325 over invoice, but they did have a $200 doc fee. Still, the best price I've been able to find in the area. If you plan on going, email me at ajrosen@cse.buffalo.edu. I can get a $50 refferal fee :)

All in all, it was a pretty good experience, but the girl I worked with was pretty clueless. But they did accept my offer of $24000 without argument.

    Good luck!

    deyounk, juzuboka,

Although I can't answer the question directly, if you go to:

    http://www.carcostcanada.com

You can get the dealer invoice cost in Canada. The only downfall is that it will cost $25 to get the information. However, if you're serious about purchasing the vehicle, then $25 shouldn't matter since it will put you on a level playing field with the dealer. I have a friend who did this and he found it very usefull in negotiating with the dealer (on an Acura RSX).

    Hope this helps.

Just came back tonite from a central NJ dealer. After a little dealing got the price to $21000. Manager had to throw in a last ditch effort of $79 for wheel locks which I accepted. Think I got a good deal? This same dealer is currently advertising the LX seda, auto, for $18,495. Which is only $30 over invoice. I just wanted the EX for the bit more extra features. Comments?

Also reading about the tax incentive with trade-ins. Is there such an offer in NJ as well. Think of trading in a 99 Jetta.

    Thanks

I just emailed Tampa Hondaland to find out what their price might be on the Accord EXV6 and the price I received was 24,900.0 plus tax and tag and 360.50 in dealer fees which brings the total cost to (you guessed it) 25,260.50! (MSRP)! Am I stupid or what? Guess I won't be shopping there! Oh well, my search will continue here in Florida. Anyone received a good deal here in Florida at another dealer, am willing to travel from the Orlando area.

Check this site out. You have to get an ID and login. Once that's done, you can get a quote on a base car without options. Ontario prices only but I don't think that it matters. You should be able to get as close to that price anywhere else in Canada. Quote for a EX-V6 was at approx. $1400 below MSRP.

I guess I didn't negotiate as hard as you did but I bought the exact same car for 3% over invoice (close to $700 over invoice) plus tax, tag, and dealer fees of about $400, but I did my negotiations about a month ago before the slow sales were published. Could probably do better today. The car is worth every penny though and then some. It's a pure pleasure to drive.

Hey where can I found out what the dealer holdbacks are for each manufacturer? I know Honda has 3% but I cant find them for others...also Edmunds doesnt seem to have all the info for rebates/incentives/holdbacks listed for 2003.

Just bought a 2003 LX at 50 over invoice at central NJ dealer. Love the car and I think got a good deal. The mileage I got on three refills with about 60% highway driving is 29, 26 and 26 mpg.
  • umyayaumyaya Member Posts: 123
Anyone go to the Atlanta dealers as was mentioned last week? I'm interested to hear, specifically those refered through carsdirect.com.

    Compuman1:

I got the 3% over invoice deal from both internet dealerships here in Orlando. I went with the most professional - hands down, Classic Honda.

    Per Honda Service web site:

"Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?
Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.
American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions."

Hey my Man... I ended up buying from Brewster Honda in Brewster, NY.

$300 over invoice for a Graphite EX V6 Sedan... SWEET car. I really am enjoying it, and trying to listen to the wise folks in this BBS re: break in. I appeciate all of your advice.

My only drawback so far? 22 mpg on 60/40 driving (highway/city). I hope & have heard that will improve w/ time.

Finalised @ $18.5 yesterday for silver Auto I-4. The car wont be here till next week. Its on its way from LA. The only worry is, its made in Japan, if there will be any quality problems. Anyone, please throw some light, if the cars made there are as good, and why they are being shipped from Japan. Thanx.

    ajrosen,

I went to Boch Honda in Norwood. They don't have the model I'm looking for. They tried to convince me on the EX V6. The woman said what the $2000 difference? I said a lot when I don't need it. oh, also, they threw $26,800 for the EX at me. Then, I mentioned your purchase there...they went silent.

I'll shop around for it tomorrow or next week. It helps to have a game plan when you go in.
  • ajrosenajrosen Member Posts: 10
    Slick,

That's prety strange when it was so easy for me. I said $24,000, they said yes. Not much more than that to it. But I think it was on their list of incoming vehicles... dont' know if that made a difference. Sorry they aren't being as helpful to you. Good luck.

Just a note for those looking at this model in North Texas. I have been monitoring this thread over the last couple months to see what people were asking and getting for this car. I knew that
invoice was about 23.6K, so I had a number close to this in mind.
I went to a local dealer (Lute Riley) in Richardson, north of Dallas today to do some dealin'. After test driving the car, we went inside to discuss price. I knew that this was the car I wanted, it seemed to be the best value in this class. I test drove an Altima V6 , but I just felt that the Accord was put together better and offered a lot more for the price. I may be partial to Hondas, I've been driving a 92 Prelude for 10 years.
Anyway, the price I was willing to buy at was no more than $500 over invoice ($24.1K). The first offer given me was the standard "how much do you want to pay a month?" question. I told them I will not deal on monthly payments, only selling price. That's when the salesman went to his manager and came back with an offer of $25K.
I said no way to that and stuck to my guns of 24.1K. He then brought his manager over to me and he went into his spiel about what a great car this is etc, how there is NO WAY that they could sell the car at my price. I told him fine, you have my phone number. Then he proceeded to offer me the car at 24.5, and said that I'm not giving them much of a profit even at that price! I told him you weren't willing to budge off 25K 15 minutes ago and now you're cutting 500 off that?
I said 24.1 or no deal, which sent him to his boss (maybe the coffee pot for all I know) and came back with a sheet showing what the invoice was for the car and some other price (dealer cost?), which was still $200 over my price. I still said 24.1 or nothing, which sent him back to HIS manager(?). A few minutes later, the salesman came back and said "congratulations, you got a deal".
Final price: $24,100 + tax (6%) + doc, tag, inspection fees (~$200). They only offered me $1K
for my Prelude, but that was expected as it has some pretty extensive body damage. I think I can get maybe double that selling it privately.
Sorry for the long letter, just thought I'd share my experience for those who might be looking for an Accord in this area. I'm glad that I stuck to my predetermined price, and that I would not give in. Don't know what other people are paying in this area, but think I did OK.
A question before I close: what is the best loan rates out there for a 4 year note? Are internet agencies or some major banks (ie. Wells Fargo) better than Honda Finance? They are offering me 7.5%, which seems a bit high for these times. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I bought a silver 2003 Honda Accord LX with manual transmission from Leith Honda in Raleigh, North Carolina on October 21, 2002 for $18,198 ($500 over invoice). At first, I thought I got a good deal, but realized some days later that I made a handful of first-timer's mistakes:

    (1) I was pre-approved for a new auto loan from my credit union on October 11 2002, and didn't bother to check the current interest rate on the day I went to the dealership. The interest rate for a 5-year new auto loan effective October 21, 2002 (the day I went to the dealership) went down from 6.5% to 5.75%! The dealership offered me 6.0%, which I accepted because I thought I was getting 0.5% off my credit union's rate! Had I checked my credit union's rate before I went to the dealership, I could have gotten a much better financing offer.

    (2) The car already had 107 miles on it!!! The $500 over invoice price was the FIRST offer from the salesman and I didn't bother to "haggle" a little bit! I think that with the 107 miles on the odometer, I could have negotiated a lower price, at least by a couple hundreds.

    (3) I didn't check the car's exterior well enough, and found out later that there is a paint scratch/chip in front. Not a big deal, but a brand new car should be free of these (and the odometer reading should be no more than 50-70 test drive miles.).

Although the car seems to perform well, I am not very happy with my purchase. Too bad, it's all my mistakes! :-)

Hi, Just thought I'd share. The market is very different here in MN. Dealers are having trouble keeping cars and wouldn't deal. About a month ago the best we could do was $500 off MSRP. Then a week ago the best we could get was $800 off MSRP. I used Edmunds to send emails to local dealers and said that I say Accords were selling for $300 over invoice and that we could buy today. Only one dealer of 5 responded. The best we could do was $24,400. This is actually a great deal for this area and one dealer we called a little closer to us wouldn't even give us a vehicle for the price. We now are the owners of a Desert Mist EXV6. Thanks.

I bought my Silver LX Auto from Autosport Honda in Bridgewater, sales man named Chris. Excellent experience with him, no pressure, took 3 test drives over 2 weeks before I decided. Tell him its the guy who traded in the Mirage and ask him to give me a thank you call if you do buy it from him.

Are there any tricks on Doc fee and Ad fee.
Is that fixed amount? How much is reasonable?
It's really confuse me. Also I see inspection fee, what's the point for a new car to charge inspection fee? Your explain highly appreciated.
  • hotneutronhotneutron Member Posts: 7
Thanks for the info. It would be great that I could get a deal as good as yours (50 over invoice). I could possiblly consider an EX now.
    Will let him call you...
  • apbangiapbangi Member Posts: 17
Many thanks for your comments, irish24. I really appreciate it!

I still feel that the 107 "test drive" miles is a bit excessive. I just hope that those who have test driven it didn't "abuse" the gas pedal and the brakes to the max. My readings tell me that these are the (bad) things that most test drivers do -- in order to feel how far this new model can go. This really makes me very uneasy. For some reason, I forgot all about this odometer reading when the salesman and I were done with the test drive and back into the negotiating/processing room. I would call this plain "inexperience".

Indeed, there is no problem transferring the financing to my credit union. My only regret is that I lost the opportunity to be offered by the dealership with a rate better than 5.75%!

With the slow auto sales (and others posting $0-300 over invoice deals), I couldn't help but think that I could have done much better. All I can do was to throw away the calling cards that the "smart" salesman gave me. :-)
