...You guys think it is overpriced?

....FWIW: last summer......NEW 2005 EX V-6 6M coupe currently in my garage was $23413 prior TTL.....

    ..again: FWIW.

    best, ez..
  • thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
I disagree. 22k will not buy a certified one.

For instance: I have a 2005 civic lx with only 1600 miles on it. its certified. Sale price: 18000!!!!!

I know, I know, its more than it was brand new. The certification process and warranty can cost alot of money (as we all know).
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,755
    yer certainly allowed to disagree.

every time i go to buy a used car, I run into a couple of dealers who think my price is unrealistic. Ya know what? It may take a couple of weeks, but I get it for my price every time. Just takes the right dealer with the right car. Patience is a virtue. :)

Oh, and, yes, certification CAN cost alot, but it doesn't have to. On an '05 with low miles, unless its been abused, it shouldn't cost very much to certify.

the certification costs are not the only thing the consider.

The previous owner trading in a Honda for a new one has a lot of power in the negotiation process. Everyone knows how much value these vehicles hold, so if a customer says that I want X difference or I'm not buying, then the dealership may have to "over-allow" for the vehicle. Sometimes, in fact, over-allowing way more than nec. to make a deal.

For instance: if someone was trading an 04 Accord for an 06. Say trade in value was 17,000 however the customer just HAD to have 18,000 to make it a fair deal in their brain, then I would have to over-allow 1000 dollars of profit from my car to make up for it. And we all know how we are not allowed to make a dime of profit.

After I put in 18 and possible totaling 19000 into the vehicle in certification repairs and reconditioning, then I have to pay for the 12/12 and 7/100 warr. and those arent cheap. the car could then be in the low 20's. Then I mark it up to what the market could bear with the demand of the vehicle and its availability.

    Make any sense?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,755
of course it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is allowing that to cloud your carbuying judgement. I don't care what a dealer actually paid for a car. If he/she overallowed, that's not my problem. A car is worth what its worth, end of story. If it is worth $18k at auction, it does not matter one iota that a particular dealer paid a customer $19k for the one on their lot. Its still worth $18k on the wholesale side.

It can work the other way, too. If a dealer paid lower than wholesale on a trade, that's their business. If they got that same $18k wholesale car for $17k, I still have to assume its worth $18k wholesale and pay accordingly.

I understand. I am not here to change your mind, just give you and everyone else info on how things work from our side of the fence. Used cars, especially certified Hondas, do not have the markup that people think they do. Just b/c we paid wholesale or a little above or below, doesnt mean that are expenses of getting that vehicle ready for retail are fixed. Therefore, folks come in here offering 100 above trade-in and then bad mouth us for not making a deal when there is no way possible to get there from here.

The new car market has spoiled buyers into thinking that they can buy every vehicle a certain way. Sorry, its just not so.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,755
    I understand.

BTW, I usually offer $2k over wholesale on a vehicle valued $15k and up.

All this being said, realize that I have NOT checked wholesale on the unit in question. My numbers, in this case, were merely based on "if i can't get it for this, i would be better off buying new."

very true, in most instances. I usually use pre-owned certifieds as a justification or a means to reach a certain payment budget. If a customer needs to be at X a month and the only way is on a 2 year old certified with 30-40K miles, then so be it.

I really wanted to keep my purchase in NoVA, but I just couldn't rationalize it given the Accord Coupe price I received at Sport Honda. For one, the NoVA dealers all wanted me to spring for $289 or so for processing; Sport Honda only charged me $49. And the purchase experience was absolutely above-board and no-pressure with Sport. Can't say it would have been the same at Bill Page, as they only gave me their final price after I told them what I found elsewhere.

I was NOT looking fwd to purchasing another car, but I was forced to replace my 15-yr old Prelude. I may have left $$ on the table with Sport, as I didn't counter their offer one penny or try to get them to add any free accessories. But it floored me they would willingly come in so low on their first price. And there was absolutely NO pressure...

I'd say you are getting a good price as best deal here in San Antonio for a 06 Accord LX model is 19,445.00 plus tt&l.
  • mvs1mvs1 Member Posts: 462
That takes the cake...now a consumer must pay more for a used vehicle due to another consumer getting a decent deal???

This is now called over-allowing? I'd love for that to be on the sales contract along with window etching, rust protection, political contribution, and the conveyance fee "everyone" has to pay.

I feel very bad for those in the business, when Toyota moves to direct purchasing for new vehicles... others (Honda, GM, etc.) will follow. Savvy consumers may end up paying slightly more, though well worth it when you don't have to spend all that cheese for tall boots.

Just curious. Did Sport Honda quote you a price first or did you make an offer? This will be my first brand new car purchase on my own so I'm a little nervous as to which route to go (try to negotiate on own, go through AAA, UBS service through my Credit Union, etc., etc., etc.) :confuse:
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,755
I think you meant '05, not '03, correct?
Because I have absolutely no problem finding certified '03s far less than $3k off new price.

go anywhere and ask for an 03 certified accord and civic and i'll promise you that they are only about 2-3000 less than what they were brand new.

An 03 certified Accord EXV6 would probably be around $20k, or $6,000 off new, right?
  • bridonohuebridonohue Member Posts: 17
they e-mailed me their quote almost immediately. no negotiation.

i don't think honda makes a lot of their cars in black. i wonder what the percentage breakdown is for colors. i got my new '06 in silver, but i originally was going to get black, and only one dealer had it. when i got my odyssey 2 years ago i had to special order it in black w/ L & dvd. in the 2 years i've had it i have only seen another black one once. wish they made the accord sedans w/ black on black leather. anyone know why they don't?

asbury pk-- was your coupe a 5 speed manual or automatic?
  • mvs1mvs1 Member Posts: 462
I guess maybe I don't have an idea....

when I purchased my 06 Civic EX w/navi. I had every honda salesperson on these boards ranting and raving about how MSRP was a great deal. A few weeks later I take delivery for roughly $500 over invoice.

As for used accords, civics, etc. I fully understand how these cars simply can not be cross shopped, most used cars fall into this category. Although, I'd be hard pressed to by a used accord/civic when left overs (at the time of my purchase 3 months back) are sitting in the showroom, on the lot for $3k-6k off.

As for "certified Honda" used cars, warranties can be purchased very cheaply, I don't get too excited over a used car with 15k miles on it, where the deal over-allowed, had to certify it (what a burden) $395, and the lot boy giving it his special wax job, then having to hear the salesmen say.......

Need I get into those extended warranties dealerships push on the consumer for $1500...purchased on the web for $495, yes they are honda car warranties.

Sorry but not everyone is a sucker... same ol' song and dance... like I said sit back and watch the car business change.
  • thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
500 over invoice is just 1000 under MSRP. 20 bucks a month.

    nothing spectacular
  • jkmail24jkmail24 Member Posts: 5
No that is the base price, TTL is on top of that. But that price itself is still more than $800 under invoice.
  • bridonohuebridonohue Member Posts: 17
not the whole year, but so what. what does honda care? they sell the odyssey with black on black available for the touring. why not the accord? anyone know for sure? is it that it doesn't generate enough sales? if so, why offer it on another model.
  • asburypkasburypk Member Posts: 3
The Accord Coupe I purchased is an automatic.
  • kfranci2kfranci2 Member Posts: 31
My 05 EX-V6 coupe is black with black leather. Have you considered going that route? It's a hot looking car - of course I live in Minnesota so scortching summer heat is not a problem.

I have received a quote of $25,118 for the above referenced vehicle + tax & tags (no doc fee will be charged). The offer is on an inbound car (ETA ~ 2 weeks) in my preferred color (Carbon Bronze/Ivory).

    What does everyone think?

That is $550 over invoice...not bad at all, I've seen a few do better, several do worse, but with the car in the color you want, and with the 6-speed (harder to find than auto), I'd take it. Enjoy your new car!

I did my homework and got two dealers to fight for me and one came down from 18600 to 18000 +TT&L. It's an 06 Japanese built Accord VP with AT. You think I could go lower? On top of their bottom line price, I also got the 7yr/100k warranty for 895 after going to jayhondacare.com and showing them the price. Please let me know soon if this is a good deal! I'll be picking up the car tomorrow from Holmes Honda in Shreveport, LA. Thanks again! Edmunds sure did help a lot!

    Hey,

I actually dealt hard with a dealer in MD and finally got the price down to $17,700 OTD. The extra warranty was $900, but I didn't take it. I've owned 4 Accords and I've never had a problem.

    I actually didn't think I got a good deal. Hopefully I did.

    Good Luck!
  • zy1zy1 Member Posts: 31
    Hi,

Your $17,700 OTD includes TTL or not?
    I got an offer $17,800+TTL.

    Thank.

Wouldn't the added features of the LX be a better deal in the long run? I'll bet the added creature comforts are worth the additional price. Maybe I'm wrong about this.

    The Sandman :confuse:
  • bus_speedbus_speed Member Posts: 4
The extra features were, if I read correctly:
    LX
    All value package features, plus:
    • 120-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers
    • Body-colored power side mirrors
    • Multi-reflector halogen headlights with auto-off
    • Variable intermittent windshield wipers

More speakers, power side mirrors, auto-off headlights, and intermittent wipers were not worth almost 2k ($1000 invoice. I talked the dealer here down to 19100 for an LX sedan +TT&L). I guess you get 16" wheels also, but I have already seen sets 2004-2006 16" Accord EX wheels/tires on Ebay for $500. I just couldnt justify spending that much extra money for stuff I see as useless.
  • 06vp06vp Member Posts: 6
    Hi,

Yes, that includes TTL and Freight (which I think they just put down on paper - even that can be negotiated). $17,800 is too much, push them to go down more.

As for the LX model, I was almost going to purchase a 2005 VP which has no keyless entry, power door locks, day running lights, cruise control, a/c etc. and I put an offer on an '05 LX instead. Obviously they didn't accept my offer.

I like the LX, but the '06 VP is a HUGE step above last year's model. It has the same engine as all the rest, has keyless entry, power windows/locks, cruise control, a/c etc. The two speakers that don't come in the back cost me only $40, and beleive me you can live without the power mirrors (and the map lights). And in the long run, the wheels on there will prove cost effective since they're 15" tires. The 16" costs more. If it were '05 and I had a choice between a VP and an LX, I'd go for the LX. For '06, unless you're going for the LX SE, the VP is a very attractive model.

Good luck with purchasing your car!

    Hi 06vp,

Oh, I almost bought that vp for $17800+TTL!

Could you please tell me your price before TTL?

    Thanks.
  • bus_speedbus_speed Member Posts: 4
Just picked up my '06 VP in Royal Blue Pearl. Awesome car! I couldn't get the dealer here to drop any lower than $18000, but they did give me a lot more than KBB value for my trade ($2000 for a 1998 Chevy Malibu in fair shape that needed new tires, had broken A/C, and had a crack in the windshield that was filled to keep it from spreading, but it was still noticable). Overall I like the car. The radio controls are kind of weird but it might just take some getting used to. I forgot that it didn't have map lights and the sunglass storage unit until I went to the dealer today and was walking around while they prepped my car and I noticed some LX's. I don't care about it. The one thing that I DO like is the storage compartment right below the radio. I can put a portable Siruis/XM unit in there and close it when the car is parked so people won't notice it. Overall, looking back on it, I would still get the VP over the LX. I can't justify spending $1000 for novelty items and bigger tires/wheels. Then again, I'm cheap. With a mild tint on the windows, the car is going to look great!

    Hi,

Your price is the out of door price, or $18,000+TTL?

    Thanks.
  • bus_speedbus_speed Member Posts: 4
$18000+TTL but since I had a trade worth 2k I only paid tax on $16000.

I just signed a contract for an EX v6 for invoice. I called three internet contacts at local (75 mi radius) dealers. All three were within 300 of invoice. The closest had the color my wife wanted and came down to invoice. If she had wanted an LX, there was another 500 dealer cash (only on the LX/some 4cyl/some 2dr/ etc- the details are all on Edmunds) to work with, but the heated seats were a requirement. The deal was VERY easy, but I am sure with some bargaining I could have negotiated another few hundred off the price. Sometimes time is more valuable then money. Based on Edmunds TMV and the posts above, Invoice is better than average. These dealers are all in the Pittsburgh/Northern WV area FYI. Good Luck

I bought my EX-V6 Navi on Friday. I paid $300 under invoice and I got a fair trade on my 2000 EX-V6. Test drove it on Friday and I already love the navigation, it was very accurate even when I was purposely making mistakes. I bought it at Bay Ridge Honda in Brooklyn where I purchased my last car. Good experience, I'll update everyone on the pick-up which is on Monday. Thanks for all the info and help I found on these boards.
