    Hi,

I'm shopping around for preowned cars and came across a mint 2005 Accord with 88,000 miles sold via a dealer. This is my first time buying a car from a dealer and I had a question for everyone about pricing. The car is listed for $10,000 which is about $2k less than the retail bluebook and about equal to the "excellent" private party status on KBB. The car has had one owner, no accidents, and regular servicing at the dealership according to Carfax. It is really in stellar condition and drives beautifully.

I tried to negotiate the price down and the salesman wouldn't budge. He pointed to the KBB and said they were already selling it for below that and on par with the private party value.

I feel like I should do some kind of bargaining at least but maybe this is really a fair price? Unless I'm prepared to walk away, I don't know what other bargaining chips I have. Does anyone have any tips for how to handle this?

    Thanks,

    Rich

Regardless of the books.... that's a lot of money for a nearly 6-yr-old car that maybe sold for $22K-$23K new..

88K miles isn't exactly low mileage, either...

Hondas hold their value pretty well.... That makes them relatively expensive as used cars... On the plus side, there should be plenty to choose from, as they sold hundreds of thousands each year... Have you checked AutoTrader for comparable asking prices in your area?

    regards,

Yeah - there's only 1 or 2 that come up on AutoTrader - and of those, one is manual (wife doesn't know how to drive) and the other is just too good to be true - I think it's a suspicious listing. I thought that what those guides say is pretty much considered at least a "fair" price. And in this case they're already below the retail number on those guides. Check NADA and the estimate is even higher there.

I am hesitant about this purchase - but it seems like a decent deal - and I'm confident the Accord will last a while. I'm also going to have a mechanic check it out to be safe. I saw some other cars in the same price range and year and the condition was nothing compared to this. Arggh.. I hate these big purchases!

Redhotslk, thank you for the info. There are at least 20 LX-P Accords in the color I want sitting on lots in my area. I would think these dealers would want to move them before the 2011 models arrive.

Anyone hearing about any new incentives for dealers to get rid of the 2010 models. The 2011 Accord is up on the Honda website now and I read a press release that said they are supposed to be arriving in August.

    18450 vehicle
    250 document fee
    1168.75 tax

People are talking about $1200 dealer incentive, what is this?
this dealer is around 3 hrs from where i live, no one in my area matching to this price.
    Please share your thoughts. Thanks

need advice on whether or not this is a fair price for a 2010 LX-P Automatic...have not been able to get any of the dealers to budge on their online quote.

    with 0.9% financing:

    MSRP - $23,605
    Selling price - $20,828
    tax - $1,827.26
    Registration - $420.75
    TOTAL - $23,076.01

i've even asked for selling price of $20,000, but no go. is that not a reasonable offer?

    carformae,

Your price seems decent. When I bought my LX-P past weekend, my car price (car + destination) was $20,578. I had emailed over a dozen dealers and that was the best price.

I had emailed all of them to see if they would sell for $20,300, but all of them except for one would not meet the price. The one dealer who did say yes, would not guarantee the color I wanted (plus he sounded a bit shady on his emails), so I did not buy from him. So I went with the second best price which was $20,578.

I don't think your offer of $20,000 will be accepted by anyone. At least not by any dealers here in northern jersey.

    hi,
is 23650 OTD a good price for 2010 accord EX-L?
base price quoted with destination is 21900. no addons but they are extending the powertrain warranty to 7 year/100k

can someone suggest on where to get the addons like mud guards, cargo tray, wheel locks, tint. the price given by dealership for the above is too much.
    please advise.

Jerseygolfer - sounds like a good deal you got. Do you mind sharing the dealership name and any other recommendations with your purchase. did they through in any add-ons?
    thanks.

    jason2md,

I bought my car at DCH Academy Honda (Old Bridge, NJ). I went with the 0.9% apr, instead of the $1,200 incentive. I got gray/gray color.

They would not throw in any add-ons. I bought one accessory - trunk liner, paid $113 for it.

I would email them and get a price in writing. When I went to sign the papers, they did not try to pull anything, and everything went smooth. It was a Saturday morning and the whole process took 2.5 hours.

One thing: they wanted me to come back to pickup the license plates, but I live an hour away, so I requested they mail it to me. They said they will try... I guess they don't want to pay the $10-20 cost for FedEx. But no way am I driving all the way there to pickup the plates!

Here is the breakdown of the costs (excluding the trunk liner):

    $19,828 car price
    $750 destination
    $1,440.46 sales tax 7%
    $7.50 NJ tire tax
    $299 DMV
    $249 doc fee
    ---------------------
    $22,573.96

    21900 w destination is a great price.
The lowest I have seen for EX-L auto was like 22600

I paid 23100 with all the dealer stuff installed back in February, and got a good deal I think.

Meanwhile after 6 months, the rattles and buzzing noises coming from various places inside the car is annoying me dearly.
  • chimpi99chimpi99 Member Posts: 15
    thanks for the reply.

    deal is locked for 21963 + 210 (tint,cargo tray,wheel locks,pin stripes) + 6.25% + 311(registration fee) = 23850 OTD
  • alexwalex1alexwalex1 Member Posts: 33
Got this deal today in MA:

    20825 including destination
    299 dealer doc fee
    125 registration
    Taxes (6.25%)
    Total: 22604.44

Got 4 free oil changes thrown in for a good measure
I think did OK. Any comments? 2011s are on the lot already...

I went to a Honda dealer yesterday trying to find a 2010 Accord LX. It was my first visit to a dealer in years. My hope was that because the 2011 Accord will come out soon, that the 2010 Accord will be easier to negotiate down. They gave me a quote of 21,699 for the LX-P, brand new-----I then test drove a 2009 EX, 4cl, that had been on the lot since 2008! The sticker price was 27, 565 and they said they could get me down to 23,000 or so. I left. Wouldn't you think you could get a 2009 EX now for WAY UNDER sticker??? Like, 19,000 or so? Thoughts and experiences please. This site rocks.
  • temj12temj12 Member Posts: 450
That is a terrible deal compared to other posts on here. They are talking about less for a 2010 EX-L. I would not want a car that sets around for a year. I would pass that right on by.
  • impala10impala10 Member Posts: 1
Wanted specific color and interior. Did the Edmunds email to 3 local dealers. Two responded, one of which I had already visited in person. Edmunds TMV is $22,255.00. I want the .9% financing.

Dealer #1, who I had visited earlier, bottom number is 23,620 with financing. Dealer #2 has been jerking me around I feel. Accepted 22,000.00 then said couldn't do it with .9% financing. Then called and offered $22,500.00 with financing but said he would need manager approval - I accepted. I had to call back to confirm deal as he failed to email contract. He then says manager won't accept 22,500 how about 23,750 - I said no thanks as I am now bidding against myself. The dealers are saying they need more if financing but I haven't seen anything to confirm this on the internet.

I am probably just going to forget it and not call him back.

    Thoughts?

Just go amexnetwork.zag.com and you will get the best price in your area. FYI, I got $23,700 for Honda Accord EX-L with special APR .9% for 60 months.

    chimpi99,

Thank you for your reply. Appreciate your time.

I live in NC, so i would probably not contact him. However I'll see if i can use that price to make a bargain here.

The best price i can get here is $24,800 OTD. This price is including the 3% NC tax.
  • sg101sg101 Member Posts: 19
You could probably get it for $22,500 - $22,700 but I don't think lower than that especially since you're not taking the $1,200 incentive. I just got my Accord LX from Diamond Honda in City of Industry -- and it was a really good experience.

Was just quoted 16995 for a 2009 LX Accord. 25k. Black exterior, full tint, upgraded/sporty rims. Clean carfax. Is this a good buy? Seems so.

On August 12, 2010, I bought a Honda Accord V6 EX-L with Navigation for $28,350 with .9% financing. Had I not taken the .9% financing, then the cash price of the car would have been $27,300. Anyways the total for me came out to be, $28,350+$399 (Doc)+$1,797 (6.025% tax)+$210 for Utah Licensing. The OTD price was $30,756. Since I got .9% financing, I financed the whole amount and I drove the car home paying nothing up front. My first payment of $524.41 will begin on Sep 11. I got the car in Bali Blue Pearl. And I love that color. You could get this color only in the 2010 V6 models and beginning 2011 that color is no longer available.

I have so far driven 500 miles in this new car and I have no issues. All my doors open with ease (no issue with the drivers side door as has been reported in this forum), the engine is super smooth. The VCM is only felt if I want to accelerate very fast otherwise I can not tell when it engages or disengages. I did not find any issue with the transmission abruptly shifting at the 22 to 25 mile range (again another issue reported in this forum earlier). Also there is no creaking noise that I can notice coming from within or outside of the car. There is of course the well known road noise that you get from any Honda Accord. But I am a past Accord owner and it does not bother me. In fact, that road noise feels good to me as I know on what kind of surface I am driving. Before buying this car I test drove a 2008 BMW 528i (certified car) but the overall feel of the Accord was better (and of course it is a new car). The engine power seemed similar to the BMW. At least I did not see any difference.

My only regret is that the car does not have memory in the drivers seat, I did not get the rear camera and there is no iPod connectivity. All of these are available as standard accessories in the 2011 Accord in the same trim level. So perhaps I should have waited and examined the 2011 Accord before I made my purchase.

Interesting since the BMW 5 series could cost more then 50,000. Amazing I miss the drivers memory seat too. Btw, I changed my tires with only 17000 miles on my 2006 6 speed coupe and it now as quiet as a Lexus. The oem michs are terrible and super noisy IMO. Bought contis extreme contacts DWS. Transforms the car.

I am in Northern Virginia. Can anyone provide me the dealrship name where I can find the good deal?
@Impala: What Dealship did you go to? I am looking for the same model.
  • bluepearl1bluepearl1 Member Posts: 7
The BMW 528i that I drove was a certified 2008 model with about 30,000 miles on it and their asking price was $35,000. It drove very well but the difference is not significant from driving a 2010 Honda Accord V6. Also my friend who sat in the back seat liked the seating in the Honda much more than the BMW. Finally we went with the Honda. I also like that the honda uses standard gasoline. The BMWs only take premium.

Just got off the phone. Made a deposit on a Accord EX-L V6 to pick up monday. The salesman came to my house to show me the car and to pick up my trade to evaluate.
Trade is a 2006 Saturn IOn for 4k.
The dealer's first price AFTER trade was 26,000.
Offered 22,500 out the door with the trade. Total 26,500.Sticker just over 30,500 with dealer stuff. Sales tax in VA is 3%. Expected to negotiate but not willing to move much.
They came back with yes as long as I take dealer stock (white-demo with under 600 miles or grey).
    Monday we will see.
  • bluepearl1bluepearl1 Member Posts: 7
To dnmann, you were probably offered a good price. I am assuming that you are getting an Accord V6 EX-L with Navigation. As for as your trade, you will be the best judge of the offer that was made to you, but I would think that you should have at least made a 6,000 on it. I would also check the car (Accord) really carefully since it was a demo car and have 600 miles on it. Usually with a demo car, you are supposed to get a 1000 dollar price break. Are you also getting the .9% financing. If not, insist on it. I would hope that you will keep us informed regarding your final purchase and good luck with your new car.

I purchased a new pearl blue Honda V6 LX 115 miles. I got a great deal!!
But not at first. I went to tamaron Honda (Birmingham,al) and they wanted 27,360.00 out the door for a 2010 V6 EX and that was including a 2002 Honda LX with 145000 miles. Guess I had retail written on forehead. It was out of my budget so I had to go to a 2010 ex 4 cyl there final was 22,000 So I thought that was a good deal(was wrong). I wanted to drive it home before it signed on dotted line. I took it to a friend and he told me to find another Honda dealer and see if they could beat price.
I called Townsend Honda (Tuscaloosa,Al). Now hold onto your seats.. They had the same 2010 ex 4 cyl for 18600 out the door with trade. The 2010 EX V6 was 22860.00 out the door. I drove car back to dealer and told them I found a better deal and the were pissed. They asked who and what price. They even called them and verified (Cloke and dagger style) They still said the were lying to me and said it was impossible for them to sell these for that. I took my old Honda and traveled 70 miles and got the v6 I wanted... The other dealership called and said they would do whatever it took to get my business but when I told them I already signed on dotted line they hung up.
I will never buy from tamaron Honda.. They were very unprofessional. So if you want a GREAT DEAL CALL TOWNSEND HONDA TUSCALOOSA ,,AL I Bet they beat any other dealers price.. Happy shopping.
One final note. Tamaron said ( we sell hundreds of cars a month and they have only sold 30 this month.) well now they sold 31 and they got my 22860.00.
I bet those other car buyers that went to tamaron will go to Townsend next time or after they read this. And remember by law you have 3 days to return a car no matter what you sign.

And remember by law you have 3 days to return a car no matter what you sign.

There is no country wide law in the US that requires a car dealer to take a car back. the laws vary by state. Alabama does not have a 3 day return policy for cars.

We just signed at the dealer this morning. We think we got a pretty great deal. We got a 2011 Accord EX for 22,700 OTD except for TT&L which we'll pay for separately. We also got them to throw in window tinting. MSRP is 25,655. How do you think we did?
  • Sandman6472Sandman6472 Member Posts: 7,232
OTD means literally "out the door" which includes "everything"! $22,700 was not your true otd price. Add in every fee to get your true otd.

Got a quote from Bryan honda, Fayetteville NC for 2010 Accord LX/auto. Also, I talked to internet sales person. Without using 0.9% APR, $17886 (After $1200 cash incentive and $ 600 bonus cash) + taxes $566.55, new tag and title fee is $69 and DOC fee is $399 = $ 18920 OTD
With 0.9% APR $ 18486 (after $ 600 bonus cash) + tax 573 + 399 + 69 = $ 20127. The $ 600 bonus cash only available till 09/07. I live in greensboro NC and the local dealer couldn't even come anywhere close to this price. I am going there on coming monday to finish the deal most likely. Any body got better deal than this!

On a national sales board the number that is important to post is selling price. As you said because of different sales taxes (and doc fees and license fees) OTD is a worthless number to post here.

Purchased a 2010 Accord EX-L in Northern VA for an OTD of $28370.00 with the 0.9% financing. I think I could have got it for $300 to $400 lesser with the same deal. I think you need to have more than 710 on your credit rating to get the financing. Good luck.
  • zatireszatires Member Posts: 39
As stated on the above message, posting OTD prices only, in a national board is useless.

Please post, the MSRP of the car, the dealer add ons of the car, the negotiated price before all fees (how much off MSRP) and the fees that dealer charged.

That will be a lot more helpful to all other members that are reading the board.

We've had this discussion every few years here...bottom line, some of us like to see everything and some don't. If someone doesn't want to see everything, just skip over it...simple really. I like to se everything, so I read everything. An old saying folks..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! Being a long time Edmunds person, I like the consistency & continuity of this site...no need to change it. Hopefully the hosts will agree with what I've written.

See everything. I like to see that as well.
Itemizing really helps and makes lots of sense.
It should not be that hard, thus it is so much more useful.

    Instead of I bought X for 30,000 OTD it will go like this;

    I bought X
    MSRP: 28000
Add ons: 1500 (tint, caps etc)
    Negotiated price: 23000
    Dealer fee: 200
    Tax: 2000 (6%)
    Total OTD: 25200

Which one is more useful to those who read this board?

I don't know where the three day return policy comes from but this is absoultly not true. It only applies to solicited sales such as buying a timeshare.

That was one STUPID dealer to let you drive a car home without doing the paperwork. OF COURSE, the "buyer" is going to tool around in the new car that they aren't obligated to buy and shop the number everywhere.

They should be pissed. At themselves!

I pretty well searched all Honda dealers of South FLorida. I eventually got the best price from Ft. Myers. I was willing to travel 220 miles round trip till I found Coral Springs. They were gave me a quote of $800 better. However I did have to pay and additional $288 for tints and mud flaps. All in all I believe I still got a great price.
