Hi everyone. I'll be submitting email requests for bids to 15 dealers for an EX-4cyl-sdn with curtain airbags tomorrow, and buying by the end of the month. Thanks to this board I already have a good idea of the internet buying process (this will be my first new car) and an approximate price I should expect. I'll choose the best offer in the middle of next week, but can't travel to buy until Sat. the 29th. My question is: after I've accepted a bid, how do I ensure that the car will still be there a few days later? Should I be expected to put a small down payment via credit card? If so how much is typical? Any advice on how this typically works would be appreciated.

Just purchased a 2004 Accord EXL-V6 Graphite Pearl for $23,250 at Gunn Honda in San Antonio, TX. After adding options-fog lights, gold emblems, rear deck spoiler came out to $24,200 +TTL out the door. I didn't think I could find one this cheap but it worked out great. That said, I rec'd quotes from vrious dealerships in the Austin and San Antonio area ranging from $24,900 to $50 over invoice (w/o the added options). It paid to shop around cause I saved $1000 off invoice. the dealer is a no-haggle place and they are easy to work with and very courteous. THis is the second Honda I've purchased from them and the 2d time was just as good as the first. If you're in this area and looking for a new Honda, definitely check out Gunn Honda in San Antonio, TX.

    Hi,
I just started sending out for internet quotes and I was checking on a 2004 Honda Accord Sedan DX with auto trans.
A dealer e-mailed me with a quote: $14,627.00 plus sales tax and registration fees. A/c is another $1295.00 extra.
    Is this a decent quote?
Would it be better to go for a Lx model?
    I'm in southern California BTW.
    Thanks.......Joe Carnut
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
Only you can decide whether the extra stuff and better resale of the LX is worth $2000 more than the DX. With the LX you will add 2 speakers, power locks, keyless entry, cruise control, steering wheel audio controls, better handling, and factory-installed AC. Also, depending on how long you keep your cars the LX will be much easier to sell than a DX.
  • joecarnutjoecarnut Member Posts: 215
If it were only $2000.00 more I think it would be worth it as I would definitely get the a/c. I had just put in an e-mail to him to see how much more it will be for the LX.

Do you think the price is OK on the DX though?
It seem like it is well below the Edmunds TMV invoice price.
Anyone else have some SoCal accord prices?
    Thanks.........Joe
  • joecarnutjoecarnut Member Posts: 215
I got the LX quote back. It was $17817.00 at the original dealer I contacted and also the same from another one I contacted. I'll see if I can get it down some, but it looks as though I may need to wait for summer deals.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
The price seems OK on the DX. Not sure what the market is like in SoCal but all Accords can be had here in GA for invoice or less.

How much did you want to pay?
  • joecarnutjoecarnut Member Posts: 215
No more than $17000 for the LX.

I have time on my side, and I'll have to check the prices on options for the DX. I want a/c and possibly the power door locks if reasonable. I'll have to see how it works out on paper. Also from what I've read on these posts I should be able to get the price down a little as this is an initial quote from the dealer.

I have been checking cars as of late and never really considered the Accord because they didnt seem affordable at the time. Then I thought maybe I would keep my car another year but would still send for quotes just in case a good deal popped up. Then I got the DX quote, and it got my motor working again.

    Thanks for the advice anonymousposts.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
With the current $400 dealer cash I would think that you could get the LX for $17,500 + ttl without problem. $17,000 might be doable depending on how anxious the dealer is to move inventory. Invoice is $18,500 so even $17,500 is a great deal. Couldn't hurt to try for $17,000 though. Send the dealers a counter-offer of $17,000 + ttl and see what happens.

If you want power locks and AC I would stick with the LX. power locks would be aftermarket and might affect your original manufacturer warranty.

The particular Accord LX you are wanting has a MSRP of $20590. including the $490 destination and handling. I can sell it to you for $18288.+ TTL. This would give you a drive out figure of $19653.16 including taxes and titling fees.
You will not find any unwanted accessory packages on our vehicles nor any hidden fees.

I would avoid the DX. Unless you keep your cars until the wheels fall off, you will lose much more in resale, than you save on the front end.

    Hello:

We have been procrastinating about purchasing a Honda LX 4 dr. 5A sedan/side airbags for sometime. I have gotten excellent information from this board on internet purchases--especially from Musicboy. I have one more question: Is it better to solicit a bid by asking the dealer's best price for an X model or make an offer?
If I make an offer of $18,000 OTD for this car and the dealer says no should I continue to negotiate with the same dealership?

It sounds like this car can even be purchased for less than $18,000 OTD because of dealer incentives. I wonder if I should offer $17,8000--and even ask them to include free 5 year 100 K warranty, but then what if they don't take me seriously...? Thanks for all suggestions.

I would try for $17,500-$18,000 if I were you. www.carsdirect.com is showing that you can get a 2004 Accord LX automatic for $17,682. I would counter-offer with $17,500 and see what they come back with. If they come back higher then counter-offer with the carsdirect price for your area. Dealers should be anxious to move these Accords because it is closing in on the end of the month. Additionally, all 2005 Accords will have side airbags and side curtain airbags as standard equipment so they are going to want to move the 2004's before the 05's hit the lots later this year.

The vehicle described more specifically is a 2004 Honda Accord LX 4dr Sedan w/Dual Side Airbags (2.4L 4cyl 5A) (CM5644EW). I purchased one on January 30, 2004 for $17,752.33 (incl. destination and processing fees but not TT&L.)I paid $18,480.90 (incl TT&L)(mud flaps, wheel locks and pinstripes were included at no extra charge.)

You can read the complete story of my experience by reading my mesage #3825 here on Edmunds Town Hall Honda Accord: Price Paid And Buying Experience.

I don't know how the tax title & tag structure in your jurisdiction is calculated so lets just compare the price (incl dest) before TTL on the vehicle.

The true dealer cost on the vehicle (including destination) is Invoice ($18,808) minus Holdback ($610.50) minus Incentives (???) which is $18,197.50.

Now its been reported on these boards that there is a $400 "Marketing Assistance" to the Honda dealer right now. If that is true you should reduce the true dealer cost to $17,797.50. Therefore, it appears that you probably can do better that the current quote from this dealer of $18,288.

The only way to know for sure is to set up a situation in which area dealers will bid for your business. I've written extensively on this process on this board before and so as not to annoy regular readers with my experience again, I will refer you to the relevant messages that I have posted here regarding my process or answers to others questions about it.

You can get to them by going to the top of the page here and typing in the message number in the appropriate space and pressing “Go”. The messages are 3825, 3878, 3898, 4207, 4247, 4281, 4310 and 4389.

miragesea> Is it better to solicit a bid by asking the dealer's

    Hi miragesea,

My advice is to solicit the dealers bids first. Don't end up negotiating against yourself by offering some figure that they might have easily beaten had you just given them the opportunity.

By sending out the "Request For Bid Form" along with indicating that you are sending it to multiple area dealers you have already pressured them to probably make you their best offer first thinking that you might just grab the first reasonable offer and they will be out altogether. You can always make an offer to your Internet salesperson to meet "your" price at a later stage. Someone will if you've got enough dealers in play.

There will be some who will want a second bite at the apple and will call you to see how their deal stacked up. The dealer I ultimately bought from did exactly this. Their initial deal was not really close to being the lowest but they offered to beat the lowest price I got by $200.

miragesea> If I make an offer of $18,000 OTD for this car and
miragesea> the dealer says no should I continue to negotiate with
    miragesea> the same dealership?

Just tell them if they want to "earn your business" they will have to do better than that. Hang tight and someone will.

You may want opinions from others but this is what I would do because it works.

Just last weekend I helped a friend purchase a 2004 Nissan Frontier Ex Cab pick-up truck using my dealer "Request For Bid Form" and Fax attack method and once again the area dealers were falling all over themselves to beat the lowest price he had received.

Having evaluated the true dealer coast in that transaction I was once again suprised at how good a deal he got. Not only less than the dollar amount he was looking for but an upgraded vehicle to include everything. I guestimate about $1000 in savings over what he initially expected and had tried to negotiate the old fashioned way.

    >> www.carsdirect.com is showing that you can get a 2004 Accord LX automatic for $17,682<<

Are we talking coupe or sedan for that pricing?

I was just looking at Cars Direct price (using a Dallas, TX area zip code) and I was getting a target price of $18,907 for the 2004 Honda Accord LX 4dr Sedan w/Dual Side Airbags (2.4L 4cyl 5A) (CM5644EW) which is the model that manum was getting quoted on.

As per my earlier post, the true dealer cost for the vehicle(including $400 Mfg to Dlr incentive) is $17,797.50. But that doesnt mean he might not find a dealer willing to sell it cheaper (and/or to add accessories) to move it off the lot for the reasons you stated in your post.

I am from the Pittsburgh region and will be moving to the Cleveland area. So I am willing to get a car from whichever area has the better price. I am looking at an Honda Ex w/ Navi coupe. I was quoted a price of around 26,000. I am wondering anyone's thought on this price or for any advice that can be given. Thanks

I've been reading posts from various people who have gone way out of town to buy their Accords, and I have a question: What about service? Especially in-warranty adjustments and the like?

IOW, isn't it a hassle to buy a car 50 or 100 miles away and then have to deal with any problems over that distance? Will the Honda dealer around the corner take care of you if you didn't buy it from them...or will they tell you to go take a hike? (Literally.)

I guess that was more than one question. :-) Thanks in advance.
  • rampedramped Member Posts: 358
Any Honda dealer will honor your warranty repairs. However, some dealers may prioritize their service appointments so that their own customers have preference.

I have never had a problem getting warranty work done on any car I own, even if it was purchased at another dealer. People move all the time.

    Hi,

I'm looking for new Accord EX automatic with side curtain airbags in Los Angeles. I have received quotes between $20,108 to $20,800. Base my calculation, the dealer cost after 3% holdback is $20,325. Currently, there is $400 cash incentive to dealers so the cost is $19,925. However, I found carsdirect.com quoted $20,058 in the end of April. Furthermore, someone paid $19,600 and $19,800 in San Fransisco last week of April. Do you think Honda gave more than $400 cash incentive in the end of last month?

I plan to buy silver Accord EX within one week.

    Thanks
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
The price I was looking at was for a 2004 Accord LX sedan. For my area code (Atlanta metro) the base price for a LX manual is $16,900, the automatic is $17,680, and the automatic with side airbags is $17,907.
  • rampedramped Member Posts: 358
I received a two quotes on the same car last week in Orlando via the internet. Both were in the 20,300 range.

As the end of the month is coming next week, there is a possiblity that some dealers will eat some of their holdback if they need to make a figure. But, remember, a deal far below invoice that becomes stacked with a variety of fees on the back end can become a bad deal.

I would suggest asking for out the door bids, with all fees and taxes included. Good luck.
  • gregoryvwgregoryvw Member Posts: 9
A no haggle dealer in the Quad Cities(Ia./Ill.) quoted me 22,500 over the phone for an ex-l(auto)...comes out about 150.00 over invoice. I'm stuck in rural northeast Mo.(Carsdirect won't even give my zipcode a price for the car), the closest dealer is forty miles away, and I've not yet approached them for a quote. Three or four other dealers within a 150 mile radius, but I sure would like to deal with the one closest to me....

Do you think the 22,500 is about as good as I'm likely to do given my relative isolation and inability to pit 10 or more dealers against each other? To complicate things further, I'm in the market for about a thousand dollars worth of accessories(moonroof deflector, mudguards, gold trim, rear decklid spoiler), and am wondering if the outrageous prices my local dealer asks are generally negotiable? I mean, c'mon, 245.00 for mudguards?!

Also, I will ask one more time....when should I reveal that I have a trade in('01 Maxima)?

Sorry about the mishmash of questions here, but am hoping someone will jump in to advise me again. Thanks in advance
  • rampedramped Member Posts: 358
No point in hiding the trade. In fact, it might help you. Go to a couple of local places and get it appraised, and then try to squeeze a few bucks extra for it from the Honda dealer to counter his high prices for accessories.

Before you go to the Honda dealer, decide how much you want for your trade, and then calculate an out-the-door offer (Price of new Honda with accessories minus value of your trade plus all taxes and fees). Keep it as simple as possible. Since there seems to be a $400 manufacturer to dealer incentive on the sedans, you should not accept any price over invoice.

Remember, you don't have to buy the car until you get the price you want. Honda will likely keep offering incentives to dealers through the summer to clear out the 04s.

A '01 Maxima is a nice ride. In fact, if I were you, I think I'd keep it a while longer. Good luck!
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
If I were you I would get the prices of the accessories you want from www.handa-accessories.com and see if you can get your dealer to match their prices and then you pay their standard labor charge for installation.

Most of you folks are lucky. Arizona has a 7.6 to 8.2 % tax PLUS a VLT of about $500 on a new $22-23K car. Outrageous. One figures about $1500 tx and lic on a $20K Accord...whew...I bought a 2004 Accord LX V6 last June for $20,500 incl trunk tray, splash guards, wheel locks, and an extended 60K mile powertrain warrany, but the tax and license fees made it an even $23000. Ouch..no wonder I buy a new car only evry 8-10 years! lol Peace!

I recently purchased an Accord Coupe EX-L (4 cyl, 5-spd Man)in the Atlanta area.

    Paid 20437 (Car) + 430 (fees -- docs, titles, etc) + 1458 (Taxes) = 22325 out-the-door.

The car price was about 200 under what Carsdirect quoted me. The unadvertised Honda manufacturer-to-dealer incentive probably helped; I suspect the dealer is hiding some profit in his document fees, but most of the dealers around here seem to have high doc fees too. There were actually two better out-the-door prices, but they were on my second choice car color; I figured it was worth an extra $30 to get the color of car I wanted.

I had great luck with Internet solicitation. I emailed eight dealers; six responded back immediately, and five followed up with email quotes. Of those, two were under the CarsDirect price. I emailed the lowest bid back out to the other dealers, and all of them matched it or came close, so it came down to who could get me the exact color car I wanted the quickest. It was a very low stress, low hassle experience -- I fixed the OTD price via email, then went and did the paperwork and picked up the car. The internet salespeople who didn't get the deal were all very polite and friendly.

The dealers and internet salespople who gave me the best experience and competitive prices were Honda Car Land (Roswell, Devon Brown), Carey Paul Honda (Snellville, Joe Stafford & Forrest xx), Mike Patton Honda (Lagrange, Ronnie Barnes), Curry Honda (Atlanta, Ben Choi), and Gwinnett Place Honda (Duluth, Marianne Glaser).

Of course, no one wanted to give me much for my trade-in -- I ended up going to CarMax and selling the vehicle for $800 over what the dealer offered me. A great experience overall, though, and I love the car!

I'm currently negotiating with a couple of dealers in Colorado on a 2004 Accord EX-L coupe auto 4-cyl. Is $23,500 OTD decent for that basic config or should I try to get some options added for that price? Specifically I'd be interested in the auto mirror, premium floor mats, wheel locks, and splash guards. Thanks for the input.

    Hi,

I am moving to Austin next week. I am looking forward to buying a Honda Accord LX sedan. Can somebody please recommend a good Honda dealer?

    Thanks a lot.

If you are talking about Austin, Tx you probably won't get the best price by staying in town although there are three dealers in the immediate area. Several of us have had very good buying experiences at Gunn Honda in San Antonio, about 90 miles south. Gunn is a "no haggle" dealer with very good pricing, usually well below invoice. Contact the internet salesman through their web site and you should receive an immediate reply. Good luck and welcome to Austin.

Has anyone actually purchased/installed the optional metal trim for their Accord interior? I can only find one picture of it on the internet, and unfortunately the only picture is on an otherwise beige interior--a poor combination in my opinion. I was wondering what it would look like with the black interior, especially the EX models. If anyone has it or especially if you have a picture of it, please share your comments and/or photos! Thanks.

Thanks to all who responded to my questions....greatly appreciated. I wanted to ask Cooksie, though, for some detail on his experience with Zimmerman Honda in Rock Island. I was referring to another Honda dealer right across the river in Iowa. Could you please give me some idea of the deal you got at Zimmerman? I notice they don't have the car I'm looking for in stock(white ex-l) and I'm wondering if they're good about bringing cars in from elsewhere....matter of fact, their inventory didn't show even one new ex-l in stock. I'd really appreciate anything you could tell me about your experience....thanks!

    Gregoryvw, I'm a she :)
THey didn't have the color I wanted in stock either, but went and picked one up for me the next day.
Just about invoice price. And a pretty good trade in for my KIA. It was the best deal I was offered. (and they are easy to work with too). If you call, please tell him I sent you :) I am sure they will get the car you want. Best of luck. I just LOVE my EX L.
PS, do you have VW's too? I have a 1960 bug I am restoring.
  • gregoryvwgregoryvw Member Posts: 9
You're a she, and I'm an idiot. My apologies. I don't normally consider myself sexist, but I got caught this time, huh? Thanks so much for your reply. Did you have any accessories installed on your ex-l, and if so, how were their prices with installation? I also am curious about doc fees.

I'm wondering, too, about your overall impressions of the vehicle. I'm coming off a Nissan Maxima which I love and am a little worried about the 4 cylinder having enough power. I'm also pretty neurotic when it comes to squeaks and rattles and am curious if your car has any. Any thoughts you have as a new owner would be of interest to me.

And, no, I don't currently own any VW's, but I had a bug and a bus back in the 70's. We do own, though, a 66 Falcon Futura with which we can't seem to part.

If I call, I'll tell them Cooksie(who is a she) sent me......Thanks so much!!

Just for information I purchased an accord sedan EX-L ; automatic 4 cyl. in the S.F. bay area yesterday for $22,905 out the door with 3.49% interest from my credit union. I flooded the bay area dealers with emails and got a bottom line price; and also had an email from a dealer 70 miles away or so that he would beat my lowest offer by 100$.(I got the $400 rebate and part of the holdback fees as a credit off the price for a total of $1192).It was time consuming but I think I got the best price in this area from the dealers that responded.Interestingly, The lowest price was from internet sales at dublin honda; and the floor salesperson gave me that price in addition to the $100 dollars less that the other dealer had promised.Just want to thank everyone for all the emails I read in doing this; you were very helpful. Hope I got a good deal--no one would go lower in my area it seemed.
  • cooksiecooksie Member Posts: 13
You're not an idiot. How would you have known?
I had the mud guards added. THat is it. Liked the look. around 100 bucks. Lets see, dock fee was 50 bucks. Haven't heard a squeak or rattle yet. I truly love the car.I love the bells and whistles. Love how it rides and drives. I am used to SUVs having had them for the past 6 years so was a bit worried about 'sitting on the ground' (and I am short too) but I am not one bit sorry. Took the car on a trip this weekend (300 miles) and had a great drive with little effort on my part. Oh, and gas mileage first tank was 33 mpg.
I drove the V6 first and really wanted it but, also wanted the great gas mileage, and the 4 was about 2k cheaper. I feel it has plenty of power. I had a KIA before though with a small 4 so.... With an upside down trade in, they made me a great deal!! I was very pleased.
By the way, the real name is Cathy Cook. Thanks for telling Jim, if you go that route. It was really painless (till the first payment! LOL) for me.
Best of luck. Mine is blue:)

I have a 99 camry and now am looking at the new camry and accord, both great cars. I still am not happy the way Honda packages things. Why do they still force you to get the EX if you want curtain airbags. Same goes for a power seat and an outside temp display for crying out loud. These are all things available on the LE camry. And while im on it, why cant you get a cassette player? I know toyotas not perfect either but they seem to make items more accessible without having to get the XLE. Actually is it worthwhile spending the extra to get the EX Accord?
  • ken972ken972 Member Posts: 162
I had a 99 4cyl Camry LE prior to my 04 EXV6 Accord and have been very please with my purchase. I was undecided between the two but needed a break from the cushy camry ride for a somewhat sporty ride. If needed you can get a factory cassette player as well as a outside temp guage installed if you dont want the ex. You can see them on handaaccessories.com. Curtain airbags will be standard on all accords for 05 if you are willing to wait.

Just purchased an Ex-V6 in northern Connecticut for $25,000 plus $490 destination plus $102 for paperwork. This does not include sales tax. Had to be firm regarding their mandatory "dealer prep" charge of about $385. After that, they just crossed out (without comment) the $ 100+ charge for the VIN number etching that is printed on their sales invoice and never mentioned an extended warranty.

I started this process by e-mailing a number of dealers with a price bid of $24,822. This dealer came the closest, so we went down to meet them and talk. With this start, good numbers in my folder so they knew they couldn't B.S. us, and being firm with their attempts to sneak in additional profit, it took under 15 minutes to negotiate the deal.

Finally, pulled the plug and purchased ex v6 sedan AT non-nav (graphite pearl) after lurking in here for a while. Car price was $22,600 including destination, out the door price in nj (6% tax) 24,3xx.xx. Decided to get decklid spoiler at the last moment and paid $490 with installation. Could have pushed hard on getting it for cheaper, i guess. Dealer threw in sun visor, mud guards and door edge guards at no extra charge.

I also got a quote of $22,3xx from another dealer for v6 coupe today, little too late.

Its been only 2 days but car has so far exceeded all expectations. car is so quiet and Electronic throttle control makes the ride smoother.

Had thought of getting metal-trimming but after seeing the gray interior which already includes some metal trimming (near gear shift box and door handles) - any additional metal would have been an overkill - in my opinion.

I bought an 2004 EX-L in Boston area a week ago. The internet everywhere shows the MSRP of this car is $24,790 but the one on my window is $24,940. Does this car have anything extra or it justs costs some extra $$$ in Boston area? Can anybody tell me why?

I did not do much research on the price before I bought the car. Paid $21,600 for the car and the total out the door is just under $22,900. Is this a good deal?

    Thanks a lot!
