When I purchased my Tacoma, I overheard the salesman and manager speaking about holdback. They quoted 2.5% on A and 3.0% on B. I think I read that A is a car on the lot and B is a car waiting arrival. I am pretty sure they make these percents on MSRP. So for a $28000 MSRP price they are making either $700 or $840 if you buy at invoice. At least this is my understanding of it at my dealership. I am sure they make incentives on these vehicles also, but I think they must meet a quota before they receive them.
["Side note: Is anyone else having problems with discoloration of their dash? The dark grey upper portion of mine now has a large white spot where the color came off while I was cleaning it this weekend. There were shiny dark spots on it the day I picked it up, thought it was excess protectant or some slopped soda pop, which is why I cleaned it. It was in one of these areas where the dash discolored. The other shiny spots are still there even after a good protectant/cleaner pass. Guess I get to find out how the warranty service at my dealership is earlier than expected. Wonder how much out of pocket this will be to replace if I have to pay..."] That's rough, not to mention time lost. I haven't read about that before. They will want to know what kind of solvent you used, so you may want to have the bottle on hand going in.
Good info on A and B holdbacks. There are also 'spliffs' I beleive the term is. It's a reward payment forhigh volume sales. That's in addition to Dealer Holdbacks. Still having trouble justifying the gas savings on a Tacoma 4 cyl vs. a Tundra with that quiet V8 power. It sure is nice, but not necessary.
I think my credit card is due a refund because I'm returning the Toyota Extra Care Extended warranty for $858.00
I purchased a Taco Pre-Runner Double Cab TRD '05 on June 28, 2005. Total out the door w/ tax and license is $26,381.50 I wrote a check for $26,380.50 using the Capital One Auto Finance Auto Finance Check.
Inside the finance manager office, I decided to buy the alarm system $399.00 and Toyota Extra Care Warranty $858.00.(Total $1258.00) I decided to put these two charges on my credit card.
To make a long story short, the finance manager added these to my finance contract as follows...$26381.50 + $1258.00 = $27,639.50 - Downpayment $1258.00 = $26381.50
I wrote the dealer a check for $26381.50 which pays for the truck in full from capital one auto finance. . The alarm and extended warranty I paid for using my credit card. Now, they refuse to give me a credit for $858.00.
The dealer said, Toyota will return my $858.00 to my finance company in my care because it is in the contract. My argument is, Carson Toyota has been paid by Capital One Auto Finance for $26,381.50. The Accessories I purchased alarm/extended care warranty I charged on two credit card transactions. I'm upset because I believe it should be returned to my card. Who is right?
First, I think it is a deal for toyota warranty. I was quoted $2000 and then with negotions about $1500. I think best deal that some posted was about $845.
Dealer should refund you the money if they have not sent the money to the finance company that underwrites the loan. IF THEY HAVE, just get it from them. when you go to them, they should and will. They will say something like they will prorate the remaining mile on the truck, BUT New car warranty applies now until 36K. Extended kicks in after this is up. You'll get the money, just be patient.
For a '05 Tacoma Access Cab V6 AT 2wd TRD off road package I was quoted $600 over invoice. Dealer claims invoice was 23,129. Out the door price about $26,400. Fair Deal?
The dealership had it color matched and re-colored under warranty (awesome, they are definitely earning serious brownie points in my book since it was basically my mistake). The area that was repaired is a little bit shinier than the rest of the dash but that may back off some once I go over it with some dash protectant and a soft cloth in a couple of days after it is completely cured (the spots that had to be repaired were from elbow grease only, the rest of the dash where I went over it with the protectant looks great so it wasn't that).
The service writer has also given me the option of replacing the entire upper dash under warranty should I feel unhappy with the looks of the repair. I told him I'd wait a week and see how it looked and decide how I felt about it then. Overall I am extremely happy with the service department so far at Larry Miller Toyota in Peoria, AZ. Much better than the service departments at the two dealers I used on my old car. Totally different experience than I expected knowing it was my mistake they were fixing (I did let them know that up front, I have moral problems ripping anyone off, car dealers included).
To badness: Thanks! I think so too... Tacomas are a right [non-permissible content removed] to find in Speedway Blue in AZ, only 3 available, the one I got, one that was shipping and another on the ground up in the northern part of the state.
Ask to see the invoice to verify they aren't BSing you.
Is that 26,400$ after taxes title & licensing? Are you trading anything in? Are you putting any money down? If you are trading in your taxes will drop a bit as the total value of the trade is deducted from the purchase cost of the truck before taxes are calculated. Check build some vehicles here and at KBB with the same options you have been quoted on and see what the invoice and "what others are paying" comes out at. Take printouts of all of this with you and compare it to the dealership vehicle.
In then end it is really up to you. Do you feel that the price you were offered is fair and how bad do you want the vehicle? You might also see if they are willing to negotiate or add some extras for free, such as an alarm or tinting, etc.
Look's like the truck is in Big Bear or thereabouts. I'm in Riverside and looking to buy a 2005 Double Cab Pre-runner Long Bed 4X2, with the TRD Sport option pkg. #4(PK). From which online site did you get your quote? Which dealer honored the quote? Thanks.
You are correct, your card should receive a credit. Hopefully your finance company will refund you the money if they receive it. However, you can call your credit card company, explain the situation to them and tell them you'd like to dispute the charge, just in case you do not receive the refund from the finance company.
Thanks, I'll call my credit card company to dispute charges. It's just so time consuming and irritating because the finance manager refused to listen to reason and look at my receipts. He just kept on muttering, "it's on the contract".
I'll look away to the fact that they returned my new vehicle in dissaray after they installed the alarm. I'll look away to the fact that an employee of your dealership stated I wasted their time purchasing the extended care warranty from them in the first place. Can you say, you were shoving it down my throat???
Now this? It it wasn't for the internet sales department / fleet of that dealership, I have no idea how they stay in business. I just had to vent.
I'll just keep saying, "and you want me to fill out this Toyota Sales Survey" favorably?
Your survey is a good starting point to reiterate your displeasure with the finance department and the dealership as a whole. When I purchased my truck in June, I had a really good experience, until I got to the finance department. When I completed my first Toyota survey, I wrote that I did not enjoy the time I spent in the finance department and that the employees there need to learn to hear and accept "No" the first time.
The young man in the finance department tried to sell me the extended warranty and what he called stop gap insurance. He even tried to get me to finance the truck with them even though I went in with excellent financing. I finally said to him, "I don't like things being repeatedly pushed at me after I've said, 'no'. I'm not paying for anything extra so please let me sign the necessary papers so that I can head home."
Sorry it took so long to reply but i haven't been in the forum for a while, but yeah to answer your question, it's a prerunner. I am so loving my truck!
What is the solution to this problem? (dealer can't get an allocation for a particular vehicle in my region) I am willing to go to a different region if that's the only way I can get the truck I want. Locally they tell me that they have never been able to get a 4x2 Tacoma Prerunner V6 manual drive. But if it's listed in the Toyota literature, surely the company is willing to build that model. It's just a matter of finding the right region where they are allocated. Right or wrong?
I won't be into work until later today, but I'll be happy to find out what region has them available if you'd like. I had a customer the other day that was looking for a Sienna in a particular configuration that they don't build here in NY so we had to get one out of the CAT (Central Atlantic Region) to fulfill their needs. It's all a matter of how much time/effort/expense you're willing to go through to get the particular configuration you want.
Tthanks, Ken. Yes, I'd appreciate finding out what region has the model/configuration I'm looking for. I'm in the Finger Lakes Region of central NY. If the model doesn't exist in that region, I'd be happy to go farther afield, preferably in the Northeast or CAT.
What exact specifacation of Prerunner are you looking for so I can help you out. Regular cab, access cab, or double cab? Auto or manual transmission? V6 or 4cyl? If D-cab long or short bed? Thanks for the additional info.
I have found a few that are available. Where are you located at so I can direct you in the right direction? BTW, for information for those with email addy's that are public, they are often found in the person's profile along with info about the person doing the posting.
The prerunners with the configuration and package you're looking for seem to be available in the CAT region of Toyota with most of them in VA and MD. I know that I have had some luck in the past being able to switch vehicles in our allocation for vehicles in the CAT region, but it is a bit of work. I don't know if any of the dealers local to you are familiar with how to do this as they didn't bring up that option. There are a few with just the FE and SN options and many others with several other PPO (post production options) set up on them as well.
>The prerunners with the configuration and package you're looking for seem to be available in the CAT region of Toyota with most of them in VA and MD. <>
Isn't part of PA. in that region also? Closer to him.
In my search, there were none in the PA area. All of the ones that I saw were in VA and MD. I would assume that a PA dealer may be able to preference a vehicle for him if they needed to however.
Thanks. I checked the Carmax.com site for Laurel MD and found the exact model I'm looking for. However, they reported an invoice price that is $2,237 more than the price reported by Edmunds.com and an MSRP that is $2,368 more than the price on Edmunds. So who do I believe? Is one of them lying, or is there some difference in vehicles? The descriptions appear to be identical.
The difference in the Carmax selling price and the "What others are paying" price on Edmunds is $1,281.
Make sure that you're adding all of the options and destination charges. Plus Toyota does charge dealers TDA or an advertising fee on their vehicles that varies by district as well as region. Between the two, that should be the difference you're seeing.
I used the same Maryland zip code (20910) in getting these two estimates (Edmunds and CarMax). Maybe I just can't recognize the difference in these two vehicles. Here is how they described the two trucks:
CarMax: 2005 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab PreRunner V6 2WD (M 2D Extended Cab "Our price INCLUDES Freight charges of $540 (cars) or $565 (trucks/minivans)."
Stock Number: 2630490 Exterior Color: Silver Streak Interior Color: Graphite Model Code: 7163 Current Store: Laurel Toyota in Baltimore/DC No Haggle Price: $22,718* Destination Charges, Dealer Prep: $0 MSRP: $24,239 Factory Invoice: $22,085 Savings From MSRP: $1,521
Manufacturer's Warranty: See Store For Details Extended Service Plan Equipment** Air Conditioning ABS Brakes Power Steering Cloth Seats Air Bag(s) AM/FM CD System Power Windows Power Locks Power Mirrors Alloy Wheels Cruise Control
National Base Price MSRP $19,070, Invoice $17,495, TMV $18,251 SN SRS5 Package #2 w/Fog MSRP $2,235, Invoice $1,788, TMV $2,004 Destination Charge $565 Regional Adjustment $4, Color adjustment -$20
Can you detect any difference in these two trucks (other than Fog lights listed by Edmunds, but not by CarMax)?
Both quotes include destination charges. Since both were based on zip code 20910, I can't imaging how there would be a difference of $2300 in advertising costs.
So why the differences in MSRP, invoice and price?
From my experience.. (bought my Taco last month), most dealerships will list the otions individually, but not the package code. Example, my Access Cab has the Off-Road package #2, but the dealership's online description just mentioned the individual features (you can get the same main features on an SR5). The truck at the dealership might be Off-Road or Sport and just not list that........
Mystery solved. An email from CarMax in Laurel MD explained: ""The reason that you came up with a different MSRP is because the vehicle that you inquired about has different equipment from what you mentioned. This vehicle has:FE OG DK Z1." In other words: FE = 50 states emission package (but that's standard on every vehicle), OG = off-road pkg. #2 ($4400), DK = Preferred pkg. (leather pouch on side of seat for owners papers), and Z1 = carpet mats, door seal, & first aid kit. I don't want or need any of those, and I saw no indication of them anywhere on the CarMax website. But you're right: special packages were included but not mentioned.
Lesson learned: Info on dealers' websites may be incomplete. A telephone conversation is required to make sure the ebsite lists what you think it lists.
I just pick my truck up on 4 Aug. Here is all of my info to help someone else out!
7594A/2005 4WD Tacoma Double Cab V6 (Auto) Radiant Red OPTIONS PT - Sport Package #2 w/Tow
MSRP $29,492. factory invoice $26,734 My Price $26,834 $100 over invoice price! Tax $2,083 Title $319 Tire Fee $8.75 Documentation/All Other Fees $45 Final Out The Door Drive-Away Price 29,290
We are in the market for two new cars this year, one being a Tacoma Double Cab longbed Prerunner with few or no options. The only option we WANT is the curtain airbags for front and back, but this is not mandatory. The dealers where we live (San Antonio) are not being responsive. We are willing to travel (free airline tickets in US) or have truck shipped to get what we want.
Can anyone give us advice or help us locate a truck of this description? I have tried searches in New Mexico, Arizona, and even the DC area, but going to individual websites is tedious and not very productive. Also, can anyone recommend a specific dealership, or even tell us if 2005s of this description even exist?
I would highly recommend Internet Sales & Leasing - DCH Toyota of Simi Valley (about 50 miles north of LA, CA). I found them easy to work with and bought my Double Cab short bed there. Just email them, if the truck exists they'll find it (they had to go more than 50 miles for mine cuz it was a fairly rare configuration - 7188 w/ OG, GY & EJ for $25,000) Good luck - I'm only 600 miles into it, but I think its an awesome truck so far
Conducted almost all of the business on the phone and in email. I was very picky about what I wanted. They don't make the truck I wanted in Impulse Red in this region (Central Atlantic), so my next choices were black or Indigo Ink. It seems most are white, Radiant Red, or silver. Sorta screwed my leverage a bit. Still...
2005 Double Cab 4WD Long Bed in Indigo Ink Pearl (Koon's Annapolis) with (PK) TRD Sports #4 with Tow (DX) Deluxe stereo 6CD (CJ) Bed Mat (E5) Exhaust Tip (C4) Floor Mats
MSRP w/ Dest $30,323 Price $27,767.63 Add $100 processing/reg advert Taxes and Licensing
They offered up the platinum warranties, and the one I wanted (7yr/75k) was $1736. I told them I would pay half that. They gave in without a fight. Figured that was about the going rate according to the Taco 2005+ forum. Their finance rate couldn't even come close to ELoan.
They were easy enough to deal with even with the normal "you're killing me" routine. We got to $80 apart at the end. (I was having fun by this point) The sales manager wouldn't budge, but I ended up getting $40 of that plus she took me out to lunch!
Just don't tip your hat as to how much you love this beautiful beast of a truck (I tipped), be flexible (I wasn't), and you should get a great deal at this time of year.
Used the Costco Auto program, in case anyone was curious. They sent me to Vandergriff Toyota in Arlington, TX and I got the following: 2005 PreRunner DoubleCab Short Bed Color: Super White/Ash
Factory options: 6 Disc CD Changer (not JBL) TRD Off Road Pkg #2 (with towing)
Port options: (Gulf States) Extra Mile B (B0)
Dealer options: (Costco deal waives these, but I wouldn't have paid for it anyway) Environmental Package (Scotch Guard? / )
MSRP: $26685 (not including the "Environmental Package" which they wanted some insane amount for) Paid $24776 (not including tax, title, license, etc)
Edmunds doesn't have the port/distributer option pricing, but the NADA site showed invoice on this to be $23654, but that doesn't include those nasty Toyota advertising fees which seem to be inescapable here.
Apparently, the deal with the Costco plan is 1% over invoice with no dealer options allowed. No haggling on it either.
The experience at Vandergriff was fine, although the wait to see 'the finance guy' took forever, evne though we weren't financing through them. He tried to pitch a couple of add-ons but took our "no" without a fight.
So, did I get a deal, or am I a sucker?
PS: The only part that ticked me off was haggling on my trade: an '02 RSX Type S in awesome condition (1 tiny door ding), and 34k miles. They low-balled me at $14000 and tried to tell me that because they couldn't haggle the Tacoma's price that they couldn't give me more for my trade. BS, I said and I was able to bring them up a bit to 14,500, still about $250 less than I wanted.
Brand new-2005 double cab-4x2--long bed with TRD sport #4 w/tow (MSRP $3,995)
Also: 6 speaker JBL w/subwoofer, Factory installed chrome tube steps, Tacoma carpet mats, and all weather mats, Door jam protectors, and a full tank of gas!
MSRP: $27,948.06 (plus 55 bucks of gas and all weather mats) Price: $23,808.28 which comes out to a "drive out" price of $25,700 (this INCLUDES tax, title, doc fees, etc) -also, there was NO trade-in, and i got 3.4% financing through credit union!
Other dealers in my area were asking up to $29,000+ for the exact same truck! But i held out and got it for about $1,000 under invoice!
After a four month wait the dealer has finally got my 05 4X4 Double Cab Long bed TRD Sport coming in. He now tells me he has a 06 ($400 more) arriving two weeks later. Should I take the 05 or the 06? Has there been any changes over the past year that is worth paying the extra $400? The other thing is I have just compared the length of the Tacoma long bed to my current vehicle (00 Tundra extra cab) & it seems about 8 inches longer. Just wondered if anybody out there who has the double cab long bed finds it a hassle to park or excessively long? Moving from a Tundra for the past 6 years, I feel I want a bed of similar size & the short bed just looks little small in comparison. I would appreciate any advice or direction you guys could give me. Thanks, Paul
I suppose it's down to both Trucks being the exact same (options etc) which I believe they are, the dealer tells me:
"As for differences, both models are the same, however, there's usually minor improvements in vehicles from year to year that are unpublished such as better materials, improved emmisions, etc."
Guess it's the 06 then, thanks for your advice. Still wondering about the length of the DC LB would love to hear from current owners with regard to handling parking etc. Thanks, Paul
I've heard that opinion here quite a bit, but an '05 purchased at the end of the model year will appear to have a year's less miles on it when you go to sell it. Providing there's not much difference in the body style or options, wouldn't than make it pretty much a wash?
Thinking of purchasing a Tacoma 4X4 V6 automatic... does anyone think they will have rebates available on the 2005's soon? I know the other incentives just ended yesterday, but I don't see any new incentives posted to Toyota's website yet. Since it's the end of the year clearance... how much under invoice do you think dealers will go? I got a few quotes and none of them are under invoice, they have all been $500 to $700 over invoice. Supposedly, one area dealer is offering employee pricing on Toyota's, but I really don't see any significant price difference.
I just purchased the Identical truck with the 6cd player for $400 over invoice at John Elway in Denver. I went through edmumds and recieved several offers from other deals in the area. All were with in a $100 of each other. 2005 ($27313) RM Parker, Colorado
I took advantage of one of the local dealers employee pricing. Sticker and Toyota website listed price at $25,050. With the employee discount, they took off 2,000. So I paid a hellova lot below MSRP, before taxes that is... I recommend Toyota of Redlands to anyone in SoCal. The salespeople were nice, not pushy, and called a couple of times to see how I liked my new truck. I wonder how much they woulda gone down on a 4X4 Doublecab...LOL I shouldn't think like that! I love my truck! John Elway... ewwwwww. Didn't like him in football, don't like his dealerships.

I'm looking for a Prerunner V6, manual transmission, access cab, with SR5 package #3 (SN). Preferred color Silver Streak.
Lee
I have found a few that are available. Where are you located at so I can direct you in the right direction? BTW, for information for those with email addy's that are public, they are often found in the person's profile along with info about the person doing the posting.
I'm about half way between Syracuse and Binghamton, not far from Ithaca.
Isn't part of PA. in that region also? Closer to him.
Check Carmax in Baltimore/DC I think they have one.

Can anyone give us advice or help us locate a truck of this description? I have tried searches in New Mexico, Arizona, and even the DC area, but going to individual websites is tedious and not very productive. Also, can anyone recommend a specific dealership, or even tell us if 2005s of this description even exist?
Thanks, bliss
Good luck - I'm only 600 miles into it, but I think its an awesome truck so far

Photos forthcoming on the taco photos forum...
2005 PreRunner DoubleCab Short Bed
Color: Super White/Ash
Factory options:
6 Disc CD Changer (not JBL)
TRD Off Road Pkg #2 (with towing)
Port options: (Gulf States)
Extra Mile B (B0)
Dealer options: (Costco deal waives these, but I wouldn't have paid for it anyway)
Environmental Package (Scotch Guard?
MSRP: $26685 (not including the "Environmental Package" which they wanted some insane amount for)
Paid $24776 (not including tax, title, license, etc)
Also: 6 speaker JBL w/subwoofer, Factory installed chrome tube steps, Tacoma carpet mats, and all weather mats, Door jam protectors, and a full tank of gas!
MSRP: $27,948.06 (plus 55 bucks of gas and all weather mats)
Price: $23,808.28 which comes out to a "drive out" price of $25,700 (this INCLUDES tax, title, doc fees, etc) -also, there was NO trade-in, and i got 3.4% financing through credit union!
Other dealers in my area were asking up to $29,000+ for the exact same truck! But i held out and got it for about $1,000 under invoice!
The other thing is I have just compared the length of the Tacoma long bed to my current vehicle (00 Tundra extra cab) & it seems about 8 inches longer.
Just wondered if anybody out there who has the double cab long bed finds it a hassle to park or excessively long? Moving from a Tundra for the past 6 years,
I feel I want a bed of similar size & the short bed just looks little small in comparison.
I would appreciate any advice or direction you guys could give me.
Thanks, Paul

I agree.
I'd only buy the 2005 at a significant discount. In resale terms, it's already a year old.
which I believe they are, the dealer tells me:
"As for differences, both models are the same, however, there's usually
minor improvements in vehicles from year to year that are unpublished such as better materials, improved emmisions, etc."
Guess it's the 06 then, thanks for your advice. Still wondering about the length of the DC LB would love to hear from current owners with regard to handling parking etc.
Thanks, Paul
OR
'03 Tacoma with 45K miles..
How much difference in price do you think? I'm betting it is a lot more than $400.... More like $2K-$3K would be my guess..

But, if you can hold out until Toyota starts rebating the '05's to clear them out, I'd bet you could break even.
FWIW: Edmund's TMV private party figures for the example you gave estimate $864 more for the '03. (PreRunner DblCab, 4WD, V6, no added options)
