All the invoice prices check out fine on edmunds and kbb, the fleet mark-up is only $200 because the dealer mis-quoted the truck 3 times (sorry for the "mistakes" - ya right).
They let me walk out with the quote above citing that they cannot remove the TDA fee (Toyota Dealer Advertising). Is this a legitimate fee or can the dealer remove it and still come out above invoice on the truck?
Please advise on everyone's experience and knowledge regarding this TDA fee.
Thanks for your help!!! - Hammer out
Ken
But if you are looking for a lower price, you'll have to negotiate on another charge rather than the advertising fee. It's a nice truck, and the price looks reasonable to me - I wouldn't let it go over a fee that the dealer has no control over!

Thanks for the additional info and good point. Don't get too hung up on the details as it appears they are giving a pretty decent deal as Kirstie said.
Ken
Just by way of disclosure are either of you affiliated with Toyota in any way? Not that I'm paranoid, but after Saturday's session at the dealership I'm convinced everyone is out to get me!!!
How about the Dealer Holdback? There is a 2% Dealer Holdback/Factory to Dealer Incentive (2%) that pretty much offsets the TDA fee. I pointed this out to the dealer and he said they only receive the Dealer Holdback if they meet their quota. I thought they get it on every unit they sell.
I appreciate your advice to not get caught up in a fee of this magnitude, but this is the 4th round with this dealership (previously quoted lower price only to reveal "mistake" when I made down-payment).
I don't trust this dealer, but they offer the best price of three sources in my area.
Ugh. Thank Again! - Jack
I work for a dealership in Buffalo, NY and have worked with Toyota's going on over 10years. If you're really not comfortable working with them why don't you see if one of the dealers that you're more comfortable working with would be willing to match their pricing? Also, if they're already the most comptitive price, what else are you hoping to accomplish? Again, Holdback is an assessment that the dealer DOES get back from the manufacturer, but almost no dealer will negotiate into the holdback. This is in place specifically for being able to sell vehicles at or close to invoice and still be able to have enough revenue to keep the store open and pay the bills.
As I always say, the best price is NOT always the best deal, and is saving $100 worth having to feel like you have to take a shower when you deal with someone? Not for me personally. Just my $.02. Good luck on your purchase.
Ken
I'm tring to decide between the Sport (PT) and Off-Road (OG) packages for the 2005 Prerunner (7188).
I like the lumbar support and color keyed grill/door handles/mirror/bumper of the Sport package (but I'm not too crazy about the hood scoop).
I like the locking rear differential, skip plate/gas tank protector of the Off-Road Package. The wheels look more rugged on the off-road, but I'm OK with the 17 inch wheels on the Sport as well.
Any other considerations I should note? Which do YOU prefer and why?!?!?
I need to make my mind up quickly... Thanks for any inputs! - Jack
Other than that it all comes down to what you prefer in look and ride quality which there is a difference.
Good luck on your purchase.
Ken
I test drove both the Sport and Off-road Prerunners (just around the block), and didn't notice much difference! Are there more pronounced differences between the two in ride quality at highway speeds or other driving conditions?
Man, I hope that scoop doesn't start to whistle at 75 mph!!!...
Thx Again - Jack
Ken
Thanks!
I just ordered a 7188 Prerunner Double Cab short bed with PT, DZ, CF, and BK. In AZ the TDA for this truck is $471 which shows on the dealer's invoice but not on the edmunds or KBB invoice. Taking this into consideration I paid $200 over invoice - the total OTD price is $26,791. This is a special case because the dealer made 2 previous pricing errors and cut the markup to $200 after I walked out on them.
My next best alternatives were $500 over dealer invoice and they had higher doc fees. Just remember $500 over invoice plus $471 TDA will look like $1000 over invoice on the edmunds/kbb sheets! None of the dealers or brokers I consulted would drop the TDA (said they couldn't - negotiated other stuff but not that!).
Hope this helps and good luck! - Jack
Just wanted to let you know that I just ordered the Prerunner Double Cab with the SPORT package. It will be here in 2-3 weeks. I like the color coded handles/mirrors (although I wish they left the grill and bumper chrome!). I like the sport wheels (off road ones are nice too), and mostly I loved the ride and handling feel of the sport buckets with lumbar support.
The LSD better not leave me stuck in the sand when I go mountain biking, and hopefully some day the cheesy hood scoop will grow on me!
Now it is time to accessorize. Where are the best deals to get items like the ovalized tube steps, spare tire lock, locking lugs, bike attachment, etc?
Thanks again! - Jack
For the bike attachment, you probably want to look into one for the hitch and one that mounts over the bed. I prefer the ones that mount over the bed so that you still have access to opening the tailgate though.
Congratulations and keep us informed of your experience picking it up and choosing the accessories.
Ken
Thanks, Bliss
Just curious.

Got quoted $25776.33 for the SR-5 package #8 OTD. I'm in CA.
Another dealer said $500 over invoice for any package one, SR-5 package #8, TRD off road w/ tow or TRD sport w/ tow and cost for any PIO. He will send in the PIO items on the build schedule, and I'll take delivery in about 2-3 wks.
I'm looking to buy a 05 Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed w/ TRD Sport or Off-Road package. I've been getting quotes online from dealers in my area. This will be the first "new" vehicle I've ever purchased. I need a little advice on pricing. I have a set price in my mind that I'll let myself go to but I'm not willing to go beyond it. I just want to make sure I'm making a good valuation of what the actual price should be. I'm noticing that dealer invoice is about 10% less than MSRP. I figure I want to stay close to dealer invoice but am willing to give a little to let them make a living. I really need advice on tactics. I told them what I wanted and typically they come back with something that closely matches what I'm looking for. They give me the MSRP and then the "Internet Price." I notice that the invoice price is usually about $1200 to $1500 above invoice (the number I calculate and also the dealer invoice number they give me when I ask for it). How do I counter? Do I give them a price below dealer invoice and work back and forth until I can get $200 to $500 above invoice? I'm in a market where there are about 10 dealers within a 50 mile radius. So far I have about six giving me numbers. Say I have an MSRP of $29,800 and they say my price is $28,000. I figure that's about $1200 over invoice. Would $26,800 be a legitimate target I can reach? Lower? How would you attack that situation? Thanks in advance for the advice.

I posted this earlier. As you can see I got this 1K under invoice because the dealer was trying meet quota on June 30, I happen to call on that day, i also checked price on carsdirect.
Don't be afraid to offer anything even if it 2K under invoice, Dealer shouln't be upset, if they want your business. If they are upset which they'll look but that is just and act. If you let them talk they talk and talk until your are in their control. Dealer we went to actually tried to charge us higher finance rate so he can get the kick back and still break even. I wouldn't go for that. So at 1AM at the dealership, i told him i didn't want the deal and finally he matched what rate i got from capital one. The dealer actually told me go get a job.
Wait, is yours 4x4 or PreRunner? That could explain the price difference..... Mine's 4x4.....

I'd read the fine print on that ad... sounds like one of those... too good to be true... Are you sure it doesn't have "with $2500 cash or trade equity down"???
My Tacoma
I emailed about 12 dealers looking to get close to invoice. Only a few emailed back so I started to work them against each other. The most I could get them down was about $1000 - $500 over invoice. I would have settled at the $500, but I was not getting many results. I realized I needed to call. On my first attempt, I called the farthest dealer (about 1 hour drive outside Boston, 1.5 hour drive from my house) who accepted over the phone an offer for $200 over invoice, but they would have to find the car and I would need to come in with a deposit before they started the search. He was surprised that my offer for $200 over invoice was not accepted yet. Once I had his offer, I found a closer dealer that I had previous car service at with a close Tacoma package. I stopped by and looked at the car, walked in, asked for the sales manager and made my offer for $200 over invoice telling them I already had an offer for this on the table. They accepted without hesitation. This same dealer through their internet sales department was only about $800 over invoice.
Just picked up my 4WD Tacoma DC, LB, V6, Auto, Indigo Ink Pearl yesterday and the ride is nice so far. My prices with the options are as follows:
MSRP/Invoice
Base: 25,250 / 22,886
SR5 #3: 1,525 / 1,220
Carpet Floor Mats and Door sills: 188 / 115
Roof Rack: 339 / 219
Fuel: / 6
Destination: 565
TDA: / 353
Total: 27,867 / 25364
I paid 25564. Could be $200 over or $553 depending on how you categorize it with TDA fees. I felt like it was a good deal until my trade came in at a low price. I was hoping for $600 on my 90 Celica (needed tires to pass inspection), but was only offered $172. I was able to get them to $250 with 2 oil changes, 3M ScotchGuard treatment and paint sealant (detail wax) for a value of about $360 more. They were willing to throw labor only at me for the deal.
How are most of you categorizing invoice? With or without TDA?

Worked using Edmunds.com data, tips from carbuyingtips.com and through my credit union MembersQuote.com account. Got several offers for trucks with options fairly close to what I wanted but ended up going with a truck that had been on the dealer lot for a while because it had the tow package installed. When I was getting e-mail offers from fleet managers most were around 500-1000$ over invoice. One dealer was willing to drop another 300$ or so but didn't have anything in stock and was having to re-route a truck that didn't have the tow package that was on the ground in CA.
Ripping off the breakdown from mataco's post:
The truck:
2005 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab 4x4 V6 6Spd Manual Speedway Blue
Code: MSRP/INVOICE
DZ 200/150 - AM/FM/6CD Changer & 6 Speakers
PT 4565/3662 - TRD Sport Pkg. #2
CF 170/104 - Carpeted Floor Mats and Door Sills
N1 269/189 - Auto-Dimming Mirror
Fuel 0/6
Dest 565/565
TDA 0/321
Total 28014/25405
I was offered via the Internet/Fleet sales and paid 25900+TT&L. The truck was tinted by the dealer which they gave me for "free" (I'm sure I paid for it somewhere...). They didn't add any additional charges and were unwilling to drop any from the original quoted price. In the end I accepted based on the fact it was available that day and had the tow package. I didn't get remotely close to what I wanted for my trade in but had checked the offered amount against several other local dealerships and was given roughly the same trade in value everywhere. I would categorize invoice with TDA as most dealers I talked to were unwilling to negotiate that. On the copy of the actual invoice that I have it shows TDA as a line item for invoice. Overall I feel that I got a warm deal. It would have been hot had they given me a better value on my trade. Oh well, I love my new truck anyway. Now to get a clear bra for the front end and an alarm... In the meantime the truck is protected by Smith & Wesson .45 security service and the factory immobilizer.
Newby post, but I've read a lot of good info here.
Hey, what is the discount range for Taco's?
I have two dealer cost estimates; Consumer Reports & Edmunds MSRP/invoice qoutes and there's only $2K difference. Is that right? I figured closer to $5K.
It's hard to beleive a 4 cyl Tacoma is the same price as my V8 SR5 Tundra with lots of options. Any ideas?
Edmunds was not very accurate on invoice prices, it may be that they haven't updated for a while. KBB.com seemed to be fairly good for price info as far as options but a bit high on the base model cost. My credit union purchasing site was pretty spot on also.
If you are making an offer on a truck or working with a salesperson, ask to see the factory invoice. Most dealers that really want to make a sale will show you if you ask. I would suggest browsing the lot with a notepad and pencil without a salesperson present to find and note what you want (stock numbers, option codes, colors, etc.) and to get an idea of what configurations are standard in your area, then contact the fleet/internet department and work through them. You tend to get better deals that way. If you have a credit union membership check with them and see if they have any dealers they do fleet or discount buying through. Read http://www.carbuyingtips.com for some good info.
Side note: Is anyone else having problems with discoloration of their dash? The dark grey upper portion of mine now has a large white spot where the color came off while I was cleaning it this weekend. There were shiny dark spots on it the day I picked it up, thought it was excess protectant or some slopped soda pop, which is why I cleaned it. It was in one of these areas where the dash discolored. The other shiny spots are still there even after a good protectant/cleaner pass. Guess I get to find out how the warranty service at my dealership is earlier than expected. Wonder how much out of pocket this will be to replace if I have to pay...
