I was getting some service done on my MDX this weekend and while browsing in the showroom I saw one of the salesmen surfing Edmunds. I asked him what he used it for. He said he had a customer coming in and he was getting ready for the numbers they were going to throw at him. He said that most people come in and quote Edmunds. Funny, he said that customers don't realize it, but they can get almost 20% more than Edmunds list's it for. So he said that he usually fights down to that number and let's them think they are getting the best deal. I typically use carsdirect for pricing, I wonder how the two sites compare.

Interesting enough he doesn't read the forums on the vehicles he sells, hasn't even looked at it, I tried to point him to that section as well.

He didn't give me any warm and fuzzy feeling about the sales process, but did give me a look into the strategies that go into these negotiations ahead of time. I figure any future car I buy will be over the internet/phone to the best price, then I will go in and test drive. One on one in the showroom we consumers are at a disadvanatage.

Funny, he said that customers don't realize it, but they can get almost 20% more than Edmunds list's it for.

You mean they can save 20% off what the TMV price is? Or are you talking about a trade-in?

TMV reflects what buyers in your area are currently paying for a car. So it's like an average (with some other factors thrown into the mix).

A savvy shopper can beat TMV. More here.

I purchased a new MDX Touring with Navigation and RES plus accessories (installed) tow package, satin Chrome sidesteps, Wood trim panel, Wood steering wheel, Cargo cover, All season Mats, Rear spoiler, Side Moulding, Moonroof visor, and fender flares for 43,933 plus tax and reg. I think I could have done better but the dealers were just not ready to budge. did I get a good deal?

He meant 20% more off the price. So Edmunds TMV was high in his book.

Just got a tour/nav pearl white at 2500 off MSRP. Could have gotten 3000 off if it was any other color. Dealer are more willing to negotiate now compared to 6 months ago...

Thanks Sbcooke. Lots of people beat TMV. Maybe not so many with the MDX though.

Someone asked me where I purchased my MDX in PA. It looks like its okay to post the name of dealership but not the salesperson name.

    Apple Acura
    York, PA

I thought these guys were very easy to work with. Its a small dealership with only a few MDXs on the lot but negotiable. It's not far from the Washington DC area (approx 100 mi). It was well worth the trip as Apple was much more negotiable then any dealership around DC. 'Course with the current price on gas maybe this has affected sales on SUVs.

If anyone needs more info on Apple Acura send me a note to bflgroupie@hotmail.com. I would be happy to provide the sales guy's name.

Looking to buy an MDX in the New Orleans area. Has anyone bought a base model MDX and if so, how much are they coming down (if at all).

Also, I've seen MDX Touring RES, what does RES stand for. I thought I was pretty astute about the MDX, but can't figure out what RES stands for.
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
    RES = Rear Entertainment System

Planning to purchase MDX Touring with DVD/NAV System (plus accessories)in June/July 04. Could use some advise on honest competitive dealers, pricing history and negotiating strategy.

All-in MSRP pricing with destination and accessories (floor mates; cargo liner; wood steering wheel; mahogany shift knob; wood trim pannel; cargo tray and side molding) is $44,550.

How much above or below invoice can I expect to pay.

Just purchased a MDX Touring w/Navigation from Lindsay Acura in Columbus, Ohio.

Shopped for quotes from all DC Acura dealers, but no one came close to the great deal from Lindsay ($39,700 including destination, all season floor mats, wheel locks and rear tailgate spoiler).

Two DC dealers actually told me I was getting an inaccurate quote at $39,700 as the MDX is the best selling luxury SUV on the East Coast and nobody is selling it for that price. The Internet salespersons at Chevy Chase, Rosenthal, and Radley Acura all had the same story: cannot quote price over the internet...come test drive and then we'll talk...MSRP is what you should be paying for this area. Chevy Chase Acura called me twice using their old sales tactics, although I requested no phone calls. If I wanted that type of experience, I would have walked into the showroom.

My experience with the internet manager from Lindsay was worth the $50 plane ticket plus the great deal I got. Loved driving it home with the Navigation!

    Thanks edog11 (#1049) for a wonderful referral!

on your purchase! I live in DC and purchased an MDX from Lindsay back in August. Like you said, they are easy to deal with, and they do not play games like most of the DC area dealers. Just curious, what prices did the DC dealers quote you?

Anyone purchased an MDX Touring in the New Orleans area? Getting ready to purchase and would like to see how much they are coming down off sticker.
  • edog11edog11 Member Posts: 12
You are certainly welcome for the referral. You are right, the DC area dealers just want to play games and don't get it, or they must have enough customers willing to pay MSRP. It's good to know you benefited from my post, just like I benefited from Eddiemac's post. Enjoy it!!

phillybigeasy, I too am looking at the 2004 MDX (Touring, NAV, RES) in the New Orleans area. The salesman at Walker Acura stated that they would discount $1,200 off MSRP. Not a great deal in my opinion, although no "hard-ball" negotitating has taken place yet. They probably think that they are they only worthy Acura dealer in the area (Acura of Baton Rouge has very little selection and a somewhat poor reputation from what I've heard), so you are "forced" to buy from them, especially since the next closest dealers are in Mobile, AL, Ridgeland, MS and Shreveport, LA, respectively. Also, as I'm sure you are aware, this vehicle is no longer in such high demand as it once was (Walker had at least 15-18 on hand). When they get the color I want in stock, I am going to offer them $1k over invoice, fully prepared to walk away. Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck with your purchase, please post the details of your deal.
  • phillybigeasyphillybigeasy Member Posts: 31
Thanks todd53. I travel and have stopped at Acura dealers in Beaumont, Ridgeland, Little Rock along with Baton Rouge, so I'm not about to be held hostage by Walker. I'm fully prepared to buy out of state and they're ready to sell to out of staters. BR had about 5 base models in stock. My company is taking my company car away in August, so I may wait until then to buy, I've heard the '05 model isn't going to change too much. The salesman in Baton Rouge said I'd get a real good deal since the 05's will most likely be out by then. Keep me posted on your deal and good luck, I hope you get the $1k over invoice.

I've heard the '05 model isn't going to change too much... Can you share with as what did you hear. I am looking to buy MDX in May, but now, after read your post, not sure. Any body had any input on this question?
    Thanks
P.S. Any recomendation for a good price in Los Angeles Metro Area are welcome.

We just got our MDX with Nav this Saturday at $38,945 + tax, license and $50 doc. fee. Our experience with this dealer's internet manager has been excellent. However, not all dealer's internet manager works the same way. It's worth your time to shop around.

Is this price include destanation Fee? Can you recomend me your salesman?

The best way to exchange emails here (and avoid most spam harvesters) is to mark your email public in your Profile. Use the Town Hall Profile link at the top left to make changes.

You might try quotation marks or some other indicator when you're quoting someone else in order to avoid confusion.

Just curious to know if you checked with the triangle dealers for the MDX. Who was the salesperson at Winston Salem. I am in the market for the same vehicle.
    Thanks

Who was the salesperson at Winston Salem.

You'll have to settle for the name of the dealership and NOT the name of a salesperson. Read the intro at the top of this page.

I got my MDX with Touring for $37,000 (Including Tax, Title, Regestration). What do you all think about price.

We got it on Friday (April 23rd)

    Thanks
  • hms3hms3 Member Posts: 4
That is a good deal considering the margin on that vehicle is razor thin to begin with. 2004 and 2005 are pretty much "mark time" years for the MDX. Look for a more agressive design for mid 2006 introduction. The current styling while somewhat dated has provided all MDXs a solid resale value and the residuals from leasing companies are tops in the industry. If the new TL and RL are any indication, the '06 MDX should be a monster!!!!!!!!!

I realize the topic here is MDXs. But I am curious as to what you thought of the ML430. I feel the MDX is a better overall value, but there is something I like about the style of the ML. Maybe its the wide tires and sport wheels. But, I am curious how you would rate the ML from your experience?

Excelent Price. Where did you buy your MDX?
  • patmc102patmc102 Member Posts: 6
Just had the best buying experience and with a car dealer no less! Salesman was great, car came in exactly when he told me it would, gave me a good price. I brought a 2004 MDX with the Touring/Navigation with running boards, wide side moldings, cargo cover, cargo liner, wood grain interior, burlwood shift knob, wheel locks for 39,790.00. Dealer's fee for processing was $45.00 and tax was $2,984.25 and $12.50 for tire management (NY law req) for a total price $42,841.75. I did the whole deal over the internet and by email. The dealership was Heart Acura on Route 9 in Wappinger Falls New York. Everyone that works at this dealership (yes, even the Finance Manager:) are a credit to Acura. I am still pinching myself. By the way, I love my MDX!!!!

Anyone know what their money factor was when leasing their MDX?
  • icec97icec97 Member Posts: 17
The answer is NO. I have asked this question too, way back before I bought my MDX. So far I'm enjoying the navigation system. The only time that you have to spend $$ would be when you need to update, and you are talking a year, 2 years, or more. It would probably cost you around $150.00 for the updated disk. This is just my recollection.

I just get my MDX last night. This was so unexpected. We plan to do this 3-4 weeks from today, but when I call Keyes Acura in Van Nuys and get price quote $38,600 ($1000 over invoice. Acura 101 West asking for $39,700), my wife decided go down and check what can we do. Of couse they added running boards and wheels locks, witch add additional $800+ to price. After1 hr very professional conversation (if you can call this conversation) we get to $39,100. I know that some people will say that they have better deal. Congratulation to you. I get my and I am comfortable with this.
Thank you all for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would I recommend Keyes Acura? – Highly recommended! Would I recommend my salesman and floor manager? – Yes, I do. They guys was very sharp and this was my best experience to buy new car. If any one need names – e-mail to me and I will be happy to provide them to you.

Nav update cost is a little over $200 with tax and shipping included. There has been only one significant update (last October with a fix patch in January), though there have been small ones along the way for specific areas.

When we got our 02 MDX I discovered the nav system data base was over two years old. The major update I purchased and installed at the end of last year was about 15 months out of date, so don't expect up to date road or site information. Still, it is very handy and we use it frequently.

If you are looking to purchase an Acura MDX in the Washington Area, I would have 2 recommendations... 1) Dont buy an MDX. It is honestly the worst car I have automobile I have ever owned. 2) If your set on buying an MDX, dont buy it from the Chevy Chase Acura in Bethesda Md.

As far as the Acura MDX is concerned, it is the worst driving car I have ever owned and it gets terrible gas mileage (approx 14 mpg using premium gasoline vs the 19 mpg I was getting with my Toyota 4 Runner using regular gas) .

As far as customer service is concerned, the Chevy Chase Acura dealership in Bethesda Maryland has provided as bad of service as I could possibly imagine including 1) not having my new MDX ready on the promised delivery date even after calling to confirm that it was ready to be picked up. 2) Having oil tracked through the car during the 2500 mile oil change 3) having to return the car seven times to address a transmission problem with little to no attention to addressing the problem 4) having the General Manager and owner of the dealership showing no interest/concern over the problems encountered... Ultimately their recommendation was to 1) live with the problem, 2) hope the problem gets worse to the point that Acura would be willing to fix it or 3) trade my 2003 MDX with 6,000 miles for a 2004 MDX for a mere $9,500. After asking if Acura was willing to give up a 20 year Honda/Acura customer, the response from the owner of Chevy Chase Acura was that he didnt want to loose a customer but wasnt willing to do anything to address our problem.....
