To cap it off (not to annoy anyone) there is no sales tax in Oregon. I must admit I was also seriously tempted by an offer made by Tonkin Acura of Portland of $2000 off a 2005. If you have any questions you can contact me by email - it is public in my profile.
(PS to the web host - I hope I did it right this time. Thanks for the help)
Thanks,
Mike
You must remember that when the 04's came out they were going for at or around the list price.
You must also look view the depreciation over the life of ownership of the vehicle not the day you drive it off the lot. The curve decreases dramatically the longer you own the vehicle. If you plan on getting rid of the car soon then I would just lease one...
Another factor that Edmunds doesn't take into consideration, I believe, is availability. Try finding a MDX on a used lot. I haven't been able to find any in my area. This increases the value of the vehicle by perception and demand.
Also, your car, although an '04 model year has effectively 0 miles and in excellent condition, you will be rewarded for this over the life of the vehicle in increased value or reduced depreciation however you view it.
The only way you are going to get below invoice is if the factory gives you or your dealer an incentive to reduce inventory, however, I haven't seen ACURA need to provide these incentives in the past to move their inventory. It moves itself.
I bought my '99 TL beginning of the model year and paid sticker. I just bought a '04 MDX and paid 40,100 for NAVI/RES and protection package - the body side moldings on May 11 through the internet sales manager.
I will guarantee the '05 will have a higher sticker price because of 1. inflation, 2. Weak dollar and you will pay near sticker for the '05 vs invoice on the '04.
Good luck!
I'm wondering if I can expect prices to dip at all or if I am better of just getting the job done now.
$33,637 ($300 over invoice for base vehicle)
$663 for Parts & Labor to install accessories
$2,058 for PA Sales Tax
$123 for Tags/Documentation
$36,481 Total Out the Door Price.
Purchased at Apple Acura in York, PA.
Had similar offers from Reading Acura (Reading,PA), Motorworld Acura (Wilkes Barre, PA), Baierl Acura (Wexford, PA), and Lehigh Valley Acura (Emmaus, PA). All were offering internet quotes at or close to invoice for 2004s. Some would only deal with vehicles on the lot, others (such as Apple) were willing to go find the vehicle from another dealer.
Based on my experience you should have no problem getting a vehicle close to invoice at this time (at least in PA region). Only issue may be finding the color combination you like.
This is the third vehicle I have purchased using the fantastic information from the Edmunds Forums as benchmarks. Thank you all for sharing your info as it has been incredibly helpful!!!
For your base model, the spread between MSRP and invoice is $3,600. Even if I could find a 2004 car at invoice, for $2,000-2,500 more I'd rather wait for 2005 model.
The only improvement to the MDX I've heard of is XM radio. I was having trouble justifying the price difference between an MDX and Pilot for the 2004 model. For 2005 I suspect anybody not completely infatuated with the Acura brand name will have an even greater difficulty justifying the price difference. Especially considering the MDX is being redesigned for 2006 and a 2005 will be out of date in less than 12 months.
For me personally, the dilemma is even greater. I got exceptional service from the Honda dealership in my S2000, certainly every bit as good or better than I have experienced with my two Acura's. And, for whatever reason, the MDX exterior style is not as attractive to me as the Lexus GX470, the Volvo XC90 or, for that matter, the less expensive Pilot.
It looks to me like the MDX will limp through 2005, awaiting what will need to be a substantial re-design. A very nice vehicle for sure, but just not nearly as price/value/feature competitive as it once was.
Volvo is coming out with a high efficiency Yamaha V8 for its XC90, Lexus is upgrading the engine on the GX470, the Pilot is getting substantially more than a "face lift" for 2005. Almost every other competitive vehicle out there is already "fresher" than the MDX, even after their token headlight/taillight change for 2004. How many times does Acura think it can facelift the MDX before the consumer catches on?
IMO, the 2005 MDX cannot command an $8k premium over the 2005 Pilot simply through a bit more leather, fake wood trim and an extra year on the warranty. I'm considering SUV's that range in price from the $32k Pilot to the $50k Lexus GX470 to the $60k Cayenne S (I know, very impractical). So I could easily afford the $40k MDX if it offered real value over the Pilot. But I don't think it does and if it remains essentially unchanged for 2006, Acura is going to be giving them away.
P.S. We will be dumping our 1996 Trooper. Remember the gussied up version called the "SLX" that Acura tried to sell for about $10k more than the Trooper? Perhaps not. Acura sold about 11 of them nationally the last year they were made. You would think they might learn a lesson from trying to milk the Acura name without offering real value. Lexus and Infiniti learned similar lessons several years ago and seem to have gotten back on track.
P.P.S. Just to give credit where it's due, the Honda S2000 I owned offered EXCEPTIONAL value. The state of the art engineering that went into that limited edition hand built $32k car was truly amazing. The next closest competitor is the $60k Boxster S. So it's not like Acura lacks the ability to keep the MDX in a leadership position. It just needs to want to.
But I changed my mind and bought a RX330 instead.

If you can turn time back, would you buy RX330 again or go with MDX?
For "inemer" - I am currently looking to buy either an RX330 or an FX35; to replace my TL-S (NOT the MDX). In my mind the MDX is the still the best all around 7-seat vehicle available. We are on our second MDX (recently traded an '01 for an '04) and love it. BUT it is our high capacity family car. IF one does not need the space the MDX offers then I'd certainly consider alternatives.
Originally I wanted the MDX for its great looks and extra capacity (7 seater). My wife wanted a smaller SUV which would fit in the Garage. Since I already have a Odyssey, I went with the Lexus.
However you should choose what is good for your needs. Both have advantages and disadvantages. However the thing that really pushed me against the MDX is the rating in the KBB. Too many complaints for the MDX compared to the RX.

As stated earlier, I am seriously considering trading my TL-S for an RX330 or an FX35 (so I am not bashing either one - I like them). What has been my biggest surprise in my research is how problem prone the Lexus RX is! I have been following two of the top dedicated Lexus Forums and have been disappointed to see the very high percentage of problem related threads. I can assure you the percentage of problem related threads to non-problem threads is MUCH higher for the RX than the FX or the MDX (it is a very simple exercise to do a Google Search for the specific forums and see for yourself).
Lots of compalints on this on DOT website. In addition, the transmission seems to fall apart after 70K. No surprise that RX 330 tyrannies replacements are back ordered!!
Up to date, the sale of MDX is down by 2000 units.
43,500 units manufactured compare to 45,100 units this time last year.
MDX wish list will be the 300 HP V6, new trans. with 6 speed, DVD/CD comb., bluetooth, Sat. Radio,
new colors, new console, 2nd row seat folds flat to the floor, new and better leather interior like the RX330, improve Navigation system, larger moonroof, intellegent frontal detection.
Premium is the Base Model.
MDX has:
Premium (Base)
Touring (Bose, passenger memory seats, roof rack etc.)
Touring with NAV
Touring with DVD
Touring with DVD+NAV
I can't post names/emails per rules here.
However, if you just shoot several e-mails to local dealers via Acura website, you should get competitive deals, especially now with 2005 coming around the corner. You should be able to get the 2004 very close to invoice.
Good luck.
do u know if they were offering similar 700 or so over invoice on base models? thanks
I'm in NJ. What dealer did you get your MDX $700 over invoice?
