I'm also in Northern VA, and am getting ready to begin the negotiation process. I'm waiting until the last month of the year to have the greatest leverage. Please let me know how you do. I also confirmed today that there is a 1500 rebate.
Tell me...is the rebate off the lowest negotiated price, or is it part of the negotiated price?
I just said 1500 off invoice, I never negotiated even down to invoice yet. And I've been discussing various models with him and he said that yes he would honor it. He also said "its not a rebate, its a special that Acura is running this month".
I also have another area dealer saying they'd give me 200 below the best internet offer I got and free oil changes for life.
I'll let you know how I fair. The good financing rate ends 7/5 though so I don't know how long you want to wait.
My mistake...I meant the last week of the month, not the last month of the year.
The dealer in Chantilly I heard from stated that the rebate is good through June.
In case the dealership in Chantilly is one of the ones you are dealing with, we should try to negotiate a package deal (2 guaranteed sales) provided we both get $X under invoice. It may provide some leverage giving them too guaranteed sales...
I just purchased the touring with nav for 37600 (invoice minus 1500) at Paragon Acura in Queens, New York. The price inclued the 570 destination charge. This trip is closer than Philly. Good luck.
did they say whether the $1500 is the amount they are willing to negotiate off the invoice price or is it the msrp price. It would be great to get for 1500 off the invoice but i think that might be wishful thinking. let us know how you do. thanks.
That is definitely better than going to Philly! I think that is an excellent price you got for the touring +NAV considering that these MDX prices will not come around again until 5-6 years from now. Thanks for the info, will try Paragon too. Enjoy your new MDX, at least you already got to the "good part" of this shopping experience.
They agreed to 1500 under invoice. No one is paying anywhere near to msrp these days.
And I am talking with Pohanka. The one in Falls Church said they'd give me 200 under whatever the best offer I got, so I'd like to at least get another 300 from Pohanka. I'd prefer Chantilly since its closer and their service dept is open nights.
Great. Last 2 questions - how do you determine what the true invoice price is? Are you using Edmunds, or another site, or taking the dealership's word for it?
Also, are you negotiating with the destination charge separate, or included in the 1500 off invoice?
I was using Edmunds as a base for invoice. We never discussed what "invoice" was. Haven't discussed destination charge either. If I get 1500 off what I consider invoice including destination charge that would be $37330 for the Touring with Navi, which I can't really complain about. Plus I want to try to get another 300 off for beating out the other local dealer, bringing me ideally to around $37k even. However I do want the chrome side steps, so hopefully he will give them to me around cost too.
I will probably right back to him later today or tomorrow, I'm trying to prolong the process til the last week of the month too. So I can get the best deal possible.
Could you please give me the breakdown of your purchase at Paragon Honda (ie. fees and extras) and the Out the Door price. Thanks. I'm gonna prob purchase my MDX there.
I have to tell you guys if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. I have been reading on here for about 2 months trying to get an idea on what I should pay for an MDX. When I seen the numbers that where being quoted from the dealer in PA, I was like wow.... So I called them and they told me 37,300 for a touring with the navigation system.. So I loaded up the 2001 MDX with the wife and the kids and almost 3 hours later we where there. Well here is when it got UGLY. I was told the 37,300 was for a touring with the rear entertainment system. So we went back and forth Got the manager involved. Got them to agree on the 37,300 for the navigation. We sat down to go over the numbers and he started to add 570 for the destination charge....429 prep charge I was like are you kidding me. Long story short.... We drove home another 3 hours with no new MDX..... So now I am going to my local dealer where I should have gone in the first place..
So you're at 1500 under invoice from Pohanka? I'm looking at a Touring w/NAV and DVD by the end of the month as well. I'm talking to Pohanka and Radley as well. I bought a TL from Radley on 12/31/2004 (talk about a great day to negotiate) and have had a great experience.
Are they adding the 570 destination charge on top?
So I clarified with Pohanka. I had first emailed saying other dealers are offering $1500 under invoice. He responded with a yes, we are offering that. When I asked specific price to clarify he gave me $1k under invoice + destination for the base and only $500 under for Touring with NAV. I am trying for more. I'd rather go to PA and save another $1k if thats the case....
Got the car for $37,600. I register my car in MA therefore my tax is 5 % tax, title and registration is $200 plus the the $45 fee for temp plate and $13 for wasted tire tax.
Requested quotes from Chicago & Cincinnati yesterday; we live in Indy. MDX Touring, no options. MSRP $39,725+570dest; invoice $35,785+dest = $36,355 - $1,500 dealer incentive = $34,855. Cinci dealer $37,500; Chicago dealer $35,075. Plus tax and doc fee. Tough decision, huh?
I had to make a trip myself to PA to pick up my car -- I had the deal pretty much closed before I ever got there -- did not end up with an Acura, but should be a similar process.
I dealt with the internet sales manager, and I did lease, but I can't imagine the process being different. I test drove the car elsewhere, so all I needed from the selling dealer, is to actually sell me the car. I had the price and details negotiated beforehand -- TOTAL out of pocket is always nice to know -- whether you are leasing or buying -- this way there can be no suprise fees. I had the credit app done before I got there. I had the VIN for the car, because I told them I had to insure it (which was true), and with the VIN there is less of a chance of them messing with you (Plus, you may be able to check if the car is one and the same as the one you want).
Since everything was done beforehand, all I did on the morning of pickup was do a walkaround of the car (and believe me, I would have walked just like you did if anything would be wrong, and I think there is less of a chance of them messing with you once the credit and insurance is done -- they have invested a lot more in the car, and they have to prep it for pickup), signed the papers, paid what I owe and drove -- a total of 1 hour including a "this is how to set up the garage opener, and this cool button will turn of traction control". I spent a lot of time writing emails and calling before I ever went there, but this was the most painless car shopping experience I've had to date.
I think the formula here is -- find a dealer who is trully an "internet manager" (which just means he is willing to negotiate remotely), and bother the hell out of him, so by the time you are ready to sign, he will feel bad letting you go, even if he doesn't make a dime off the sale.
Hey, "icantthink" I wanted to know have you got your MDX yet? I tried to contact them, 1st, they said there is no $1500 rebate. 2nd, the quote I got for NAV only, is even higher then your's w/ NAV and DVD. $391?? .. so I wondering if you really able to get the car 300 below invoice + 1500 off. Thx :confuse:
I am on the west coast, but have been doing about three months of research on leasing. The best thing to do is ask your lease questions in the lease forum. There is a guy who works for Edmunds who answers questions. We are getting a base MDX through American Honda lease with a money factor of .00178. I don't know if that rate is available for the touring. Car_Man on the lease forum can answer. The APR is about 4.27% Good luck!
Surveyed dealers in the Austin and 200-mile radius area. Best quote I got for a Touring with NAV was from Gunn Acura in San Antonio. Base price $38199, out the door $40,861.
I asked the dealer I am working with about the $1500 dealer incentive and he told me that he knew about it but that it doesn't apply to leased vehicles. I have always heard that you are able to negotiate the price of the car for a lease the same as for a purchase. Anyone have any comments?
Of course you can negotiate the lease price. Even if you aren't eligible for the dealer incentive, I would expect to be able to negotiate down to anywhere between invoice & $500 over, depending on where you live. It seems east & west coasts have better deals than here in the midwest.
I just bought a sage brush MDX Touring + Nav + DVD at Pohanka in Chantilly last week end, before I know about this debate. Our price was $39,300 (about $500 under invoice),added moulding, fender flare, blk side steps and read spoiler for $1800. Tax was about $1200, TL & Misc another $350. $43K out of the door.
Pohanka was just ok. Spent 3 hours there went thru all the back and forth with "I have to talk to my manager", and they were trying to get us to fill the financing paperwork while we already told them we will pay with a check... and then the usual why dont you buy this and that... felt more like we were in a Honda dealer.
I think we got a fair deal, and the car is awesome. Especially with the backup camera and voice command... Good luck and thanks for all the info on this site.
It's Paragon Acura locate in Queens, NY. I got the touring with navigation. I believed that if you want the car that they have on the lot, you can bargain to get better price. Do more reasearch like look at dealers in NJ and compare price with salesman. My mistake was to jump into the contract to quickly. I know that I can get better prices with them. Good luck
You're on my side of the country-West Coast and I know that my dealer knew about it so yours probably does too. It is a dealer incentive-not really a rebate, that's why its not on the Acura site. Its just that some dealers are willing to pass on the incentive to the customers. Let your salesperson know that you know about it and that other dealers are passing it on to customers. I sent my sales person a link to this forum. Ask them if they are willing to compete. My sales guy promptly sent back an email with a price $1500 below invoice. I was shocked because before he wouldn't budge from $300 over invoice. Good Luck!
I'm in the Socal market and will be buying an MDX soon. I was thinking about trying the approach so many of you have used with success. I am going to email or fax my offer to the local dealer first and then send it out to the other dealers in the area. Based on posts here and information from Edmunds I am thinking of the following offer.
Base MDX 33,800 (estimated invoice) - $1500 incentive =32300. Is there any holdback on the MDX at this point? I am planning on financing through Honda Finance (HF) so I would guess the dealer receives a kickback for using HF. our colors are flexible with the only specs being no black exterior and only black interior.
As far as accessories I think I'll use HondaAcuraWorld from AcuraMDX.org. We're thinking about (1) Satin Black Side Steps, Rear Cargo Tray, Rear Cargo Seperation Net, and possibly the transmission/power steering coolers.
I went to my local dealer (HEART ACURA) spoke with the internet manger. No hagal no fuss 2005 MDX touring edition with the navigation system for invoice - the 1500. Great experience we will be picking up our Steel Blue MDX on monday.....
Paid $39,750 + tax/tags at Davis Acura. Then got $1500 for '93 Accord trade in w. 120k miles. Probably light on the trade in value but was offered $800 elsewhere. Very nice car. Pleasant buying experience. I'm sure they made their money but I feel like I made out ok. Thanks to everyone who has posted about their buying experience. It was a great help.
I have to thank everyone on this board, as it's been very informative. I live in Philly, and went to the dealership mentioned in the previous posts, and bought my Sage MDX Touring DVD & Nav for 38,700, and they gave me 5K for my 98 Durango with 87K. One thing I was confused about was the financing, as I got .09% for 3 years, and I am not going to complain about that??? No crap on the closing cost just your typical tire fee, and misc others totaling aroung $100. It was a good experience. Thanks again everyone.
To purchase through Costco you are supposed to contact the Authorized Dealer Contact through Costco- you can do it online at Costco.com "Services-Auto Sales". I found though that you can usually just ask the dealership if they participate in the Costco program. You can get a better deal than the Costco pricing though. My dealer said Costco pricing for the Acura MDX was $2000 over invoice. We were able to negotiate to $300 over invoice, and now we are at $1500 under invoice. It is a good starting point. I think that different dealers have different Costco prices, and I know that the amount over invoice depends on the type of car. Our Honda Accord was Costco price $500 over invoice. Good Luck
Anyone know when the 06 model is coming out? How much price reduction in the 05 models can we expect as a result? If we don't need to buy right now, what do folks think about waiting until the 06 model is out?
The MDX will be redesigned in '06 to be released as an '07. So factor into your considerations buying the last model year; I would suspect that depending on availability you would get a good deal on an '06, especially if you wait until late in that model year (e.g. about a year from now).
BTW to answer your question the '06 MDX will be released to dealers on Sept 22, 2005. :shades:
I am interested in buying this car from this dealership as well. Can you let me know if the 37600 is the total amount you paid and does your car includes any other options? thanks.

I'll keep you updated.
looking for an mdx with touring package - no navigation.
would like to pay minimal upfront costs - roll taxes and bank fees into lease.
any advice as to a fair/favorable rate?
any recommendations as to long island/new york dealers?
thanks.

I'm going to check the two hometown dealers this afternoon.
Anybody seen better?

Purchasing our '05 MDX was the best experience we have had in buying a new vehicle! Last new car was Honda Accord back in 1996......
Base MDX, Billet Silver Metallic with Quartz interior:
MSRP $37400, Dealer $35463, Costco $34311 -
less $1500 incentive = $32811
+ title/license/registration, no tax.
Thanks for all the great info you've entered in this forum....
and looking forward to your comments on the extended warranty.........
