I passed this old bird on the way to work this morning, then jumped out in the parking lot to snap a pic as it drove by. Sadly, it was a bit dark this morning to capture a car at that distance and speed (~35 mph), but I think it shows up well enough:

The body looked straight and sound, but it also had a headlight out.

I had a Lincoln of similar vintage. What a boat. I loved beating on that thing up and down the Schuykill Expressway through Philly.

That example is a "Williamsbug Edition".  In essence all that Included was two-tone paint but it sounds fancy.

Today saw the Volvo Amazon/122 wagon that's often hanging around, 2x MB W126 - 300SD and I think 300SEL, and an unmodified looking Toyota AE92 GTS.

The colors on that Lincoln boat keep me thinking John Candy driving that Merc GM in "Uncle Buck" :p

There's someone who must work at the grocery store we shop at who has a white Nissan 240 SX convertible in really good shape, at least walking around it. Not sure on the year, guessing mid 90's. I assume it runs well as it looks very clean inside and out, and not neglected at all. I gotta remember to take the camera in the car more!

There is one of those around here, used as a summer car by a member of the golf club up the street from me. I've seen it rolling past my place on its way there as long as I have lived here. I'll keep an eye open for it this summer.

Today spotted an unrestored looking ~65 Riviera driven by an old guy, an over-restored ~66 Mustang coupe, and an immaculate mid-80s Z-car.

80s Buick day.... 1st an 85ish Regal and same vintage Riviera. Both were black and looked good.

My Note 5 takes better pics than point and shoots from just several years ago. On my latest trip to Europe, I didn't even bring the DSLR, and have no regrets.
  • tjc78tjc78 Member Posts: 16,951
Yeah, I hardly ever break out the "fancy" camera (Nikon DSLR) unless its a holiday. My previous Galaxy S5 and current Iphone do just fine for most things. In all honesty I take more pictures now than I ever did before camera phones.

I remember paying $600 for a Canon 3 MP digital camera back in the day and $95 for a 128MB compact flash card. My how things have changed.

Saw an immaculate W123 in traffic today, sounded kind of tractory and it let off a little smoke, but no worse than the typical 10 year old diesel pickup around here. Also a pristine 86-89 Accord LXi.
  • tjc78tjc78 Member Posts: 16,951
My brother had one of those LXi Accords.  I hated that car...

Was taking a walk when one of those old Superman TV show Lois Lane Rambler like Nissan partial convertibles drove by quickly (convertible roof, but framed in windows). I can't remember if that limited run was in the late 80's or early 90's. Don't think they sold a whole lot of them when they were out.

Ooh I like that. Late run 129s can be tempting, they are nice cars, and not as complex as newer models. Too bad about the color combo, no black cars for me.

Speaking of those, I was out driving today, and spotted a similarly odd car parked at a lot - a 2002 SL500 "Silver Arrow" edition, a final run 129. Easily distinguishable by two piece wheels and body cladding. This one also had the unusual two tone silver and black interior - however, it was either a neglected or high mileage car, as the interior woodwork was far from pristine. I don't want to deal with that.

Also on the road, a ~70 Skylark sedan, late 70s Corvette, ~70 Chevy truck, 70s era Beetle cabrio, and a real unicorn - a LaForza.

Ha, only about 100% overpriced. They aren't collectibles quite yet, it's still just a nice old car.

I didn't ask if it was a never-sold display model, or some collector losing a lot of money storing it away!

Here is another oddball (I assume). I didn't realize they still had 6 cyl. S class models as late as 2006.

I bet it is a collector, or just a rich guy with a lot of cars who never had time to drive it. Either way, it's not worth close to 60K.

That S350 was a one year only model, and the only 6cyl W220 sold here. There were 6cyl S-class here for awhile, in modern times from 1988-1999. The W220 from 2000-2005 were all V8-V12, the final year saw the S350, then the W221 from 2007+ was all V8 or V12 until a 2012-only (I think) 6cyl diesel model was offered, which is apparently a cult car now and tends to be expensive when one can actually be found. Current models here are all V8 and V12 again. If that car checks out, it seems like a nice ride for 6K - maintenance can be intensive on those though, one would need to be careful,

Miled-up S Class Benz? Scary, to say the least. But maybe, with a stem to stern pre-purchase inspection, you could take a flyer on it if it passes rigorous testing.

I came across this wagon picture. I don't believe I've ever seen on, either real in the 50's or at cruise ins.
Does someone know if this is a 54 Conestoga, either Commander or Champion? The picture is labelled as Commander Regal Starliner...

I can't get the picture insert tool to work.

    .

I think it's a '54. The side strip looks like it's not stock. The wheel covers may not be. I forgot to look
at some pictures from brochures to see if that was an optional wheel cover.

Has to be a '54, because Studebaker didn't make wagons earlier in the 50s, and it's definitely not a '55 wagon. Studebaker only built 10,651 wagons in 1954, so by American standards, that would be a fairly rare car. Not super valuable, though. This one looks to have been nicely redone however, so it would fetch a decent price. Those hub caps look like they came off a '55 STudebaker Speedster. I think it is a Conestoga. Here's one for sale for $3000:

Spotted a beige 1979 Dodge Aspen wagon with the wood trim travelling south on Oxford Avenue near Tyson. The car appeared to be in pretty decent condition. Funny that I'm posting it as an "obscure car" as I can remember when these vehicles were dirt common.

I remember test-driving a new one in the fall of '77 with my parents. I actually got to drive it while they were passengers. It was medium blue metallic with the woodgrain outside, blue inside. I actually liked it. It drove well enough, a bit too much understeer, but it seemed a good size for the times. It was nice inside the cabin as I recall. The folks weren't crazy about it though. Not sure why.

My grandmother's cousin had a '79 Volare wagon, a 2-tone black-over-silver, with a red interior. It was a pretty nice car, and was still rust-free when she got rid of it in '96. I remember my Mom really liking it when it was new, although Mom ended up getting an '80 Malibu coupe instead, as she didn't really need a wagon.

That's a '54 for certain, a Commander by the 'V8' emblem on the hood. All Studebaker wagons were called 'Conestoga' in '54 and '55. The wheelcovers are Studebaker accessories and were starting with the '53's. Those Conestogas did have a wide side molding and if that one is not original, it's very close to the original size and location. I feel like I've maybe seen that car before, but then it does have Ohio plates.
