The navigation software can always be updated by purchasing a new cd from the dealer. It costs about $185. I live in southern california and so far i have no problems with my nav.

I am considering buying a similar car, and the price you paid seems right. Do you mind giving more details on the dealership/address?

Thank you in advance, I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate having access to this information.

Would you mind telling me why you changed your mind about the Toyota?

I thought I wanted a Pilot but after driving was disappointed in the interior (felt more like a truck, no woodgrain, column shifter, etc) and have been a bit put off by the poor mileage people have reported on here.

I am currently looking at a Highlander but can't get the price (Limited 2WD w/nav) below $29,800 plus t t and 599 dealer fees.

    Pilot EXL 2WD w/nav was $28,200 plus t & t.

Would love your thoughts (and anyone else who is knowledgeable about both cars).

    Thanks!
  • red03red03 Member Posts: 8
One of the reasons why I purchased a pilot instead of the Highlander is cargo space. The highlander is smaller than the pilot.

For me wood grain is a personal chose. Those items can be easily added to the car and wouldn't even come close to the price difference you mentioned. IMO, wood grain is out. I also have a toyota corolla, which my wife loves, and has "wood grain", but it is simply plastic. Cheaper cars have cheap things.

As for the interiors...come on. You are buying a econo box on wheels. If you want interior, buy a ferrari or aston martin. You get what you get for a cheap car/SUV. You are buying either SUV for cargo space and quality.

If you are worried about poor gas mileage then you are going to want something hybrid. Unfortunately and as you know, the pilot isn't available in a hybrid version compared to the Highlander hybrid. But to be honest, are you really buying a SUV to save gas? I see that you are buying the 2wd version, but why? why not buy a station wagon of some type, like a subaru outback, instead where you'll get better gas mileage with potential the same cargo space??? Of course we would like to be as economical on gas with a SUV, but this is almost a contradiction in terms.

I can't comment on the Toyota's nav system. I know that the Honda systems are based off the alpine nav systems. I do really like the alpine nav systems. They may not be the best, but they are pretty straight forward to use. I have them in my other cars, including my corolla, and they work great. I have a feeling that Toyota does use a version of an alpine system. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Either car maker will produce a long lasting vehicle in terms of quality.

I guess then it comes down to price. Just my two cents.

    Good luck.

I am also newbie in SUV market. Only because of Price i like PILOT. For price of 2007 Honda Pilot LX(V6),we are getting only 4 cyl in Hilghlander.
  • tuggerstuggers Member Posts: 52
I am a single person with three cars, trying to get down to two that will meet my needs. I have a Benz convertible that is good to tool around in. I'm keeping it. I have a V6 Accord (99 with 40,000 miles) and a Mercury wagon (also 99 with 30,000 miles)

I travel quite a bit, not generally by car but need luggage space for trips to airports and cruise ships. Sometimes I'm gone 6 weeks so lots of luggage. Plus I have a great dane who needs room when she travels with me.

I want something comfortable for highways and around town. I hate to use more gas than is necessary because we are just using too much period.

And of course I want the best price.

Below is info I received from a dealer by e-mail today that I didn't go with when I bought my Pilot over the week. The internet salesman at this dealership refused multiple times to quote me any price other than MSRP unless I came to the dealership to visit him in person (dealership policy supposedly), so my business went elsewhere to someone willing to give me decent quote before I agreed to come visit. He followed up today and I notified him I bought elsewhere. I am positive based on earlier interaction with him that this e-mail was sent as a mocking swipe at me for buying elsewere, but it is good info for everyone else.

"Did your dealer give you the $997.35 holdback, as well as
the $2,500.00 "dealer cash" from our "invoice" cost of $30,696.00? If not, you paid a great deal more than everyone else who purchased a Pilot this week, unfortunately."

So he could be lying, but if true then it looks like their cost for these vehicles right now is about $27,200. Amazing how he wouldn't provide me a quote (citing dealership policy) while I was interested, but now is willing to send me their cost in an attempt to make me feel like I got ripped off buying somewhere else!

Monday (Memorial day) in AL. All pricing was done through multiple dealers via e-mail. After getting the best price, I showed up and signed the papers. No haggling, easy straight forward purchase.....
  • dbagsdbags Member Posts: 4
I purchased in AL, so would be a long drive for you...

It included luggage rack, back mud flaps, and the VIN ectching (including all that undercoating crap).

I was negotiating with dealers yesterday for a Pilot LX 2WD and thought I had done enough research to get a good price. I settled on asking for an $27,000 otd price for a Pilot LX 2WD with accessories that the Honda "Price and Build" site MSRP'd at $28,811. Most seemed receptive, one dealer accepted outright, but I passed because I just didn't have time to get the deal done today.

My reason for posting is that in reviewing this forum it seems that I should have been asking for roughly $6000 less the $28,811 otd, or $22,811? Am I understanding things right? Or is it, minus $6000 from the MSRP, then add tax, tag, dest. charge, etc.

I'm a day late, but not yet a dollar short. Please set me straight!

Basically $ 6,000 off of msrp before TTL IMO.

Most people are getting between 5800-6400 off MSRP now so you have a decent deal. Is it Wyler or Superior Honda ?

    Sounds about right...

    My calculations are
    Invoice 30101 (excl destination)
    Holdback 1033
    Fact-Deal Incent 2000
    -----
    Net Invoice 27068

This does not include those elusive hidden dealer rebates for Advertising Assistance and FloorPlan Assistance. Those are REALLY hard to find out!

the same happened to me. i had a dealer who wouldn't give me his best OTD price so i went elsewhere. He later followed up with me a few days later asking me if the dealer honored his low price. I had a feeling that if the price i paid for was something he could beat he would have made me feel guilty too. Lucky for me, the deal i had was unbeatable.
  • tuertuer Member Posts: 4
how much it is off MSRP depends on model. The higher end model gets more discount. LX is hard to get $6K off MSRP. It does not include tax and document fees.
  • randy50randy50 Member Posts: 15
Thanks dbags. I will shop around here that model and price.
  • mhawkermhawker Member Posts: 5
Thanks for your replies, everything's clear now. Seems like I was asking for just about the right out the door price.

I am also looking for Pilot in Cincinnati area.

Selling Price $26,500 - Did you take low APR ? Otherwise you would have got another 2k less ? Is this correct?

The reason I asked this that I found this in another site.Almost same 2k is the difference.

"Just put in an order for a new 2007 EX-L AWD (no RES or NAV). I was quoted 26,412 by the internet sales manager, and I think they were surprised when I showed up and wanted to buy one at that price. "

    Thanks in advance.

IMO the $26,412 would include the $2000 back offer. I would advise you to talk to The Honda dealer on Beachmount - Honda East. Send me an email on car space and I will give you a the name of someone to talk too, send cornucopia an email and ask about his buying experience there.

    Hi l101858r,

I have sent you an email.

BTW,Sometime back I sent an email to Performance for price and they are still following it up. It shows that they care for business.

I did the same thing with Kingswood chrysler, I have not got a reply and have to call them.

    dbags,
I am in Birmingham, AL and am looking to buy a lx as well. Would it be possible for you to post the dealership (and sales man)? The best price I am getting for the lx 2wd is more than $23,000 + TTL. Thanks much!
  • cornucopiacornucopia Member Posts: 23
Generally speaking, it does not depend on the sales, but the manager and most important, as long as you know the price other can get, it will be pretty easy to deal with any dealers, based on my experience. Have the price in mind and talk to a few, it will then be done.
  • dbagsdbags Member Posts: 4
I got it from Precesion Honda in Jasper. Ask for Ray and tell him I sent you....

    Very good experience....
  • 07exlres07exlres Member Posts: 11
I also live in Birmingham and highly recommend Precision Honda in Jasper (45 min away). I purchased an EX-L w/RES on Saturday, June 2nd, based on email exchanges.

    A bit of history:

I'm really not a "new car" guy. I generally buy 2-3 year old vehicles and I started out wanting to purchase a used 2006 or 2007 Pilot EX-L, in this case. Problem was, the supply was very limited and the prices weren't all that attractive (example: CarMax wanted $28,900 plus TTL for a used, low mileage 2006 EXL w/RES). Once I found this message board and learned that I could possibly buy a new 2007 for less than that, I was hooked.

I launched my initial email campaign on 5/22/07. I got a ~70% initial response rate (28 of 40), with 6 dealers ultimately providing competitive offers and seeming like they were ready to deal. Negotiations continued via email until I had a low offer and all of the other competitors had declined to match or beat it.

I only spoke directly with the Internet sales manager at Precision after we had agreed on the price (5/31). Once the agreement was reached, I called to make certain that I had actually received an "out-the-door" quote and that there would not be any surprises waiting for me when I went to take delivery. Everything seemed on the "up and up."

Arrived at the dealership shortly after they opened on Saturday morning, signed the papers, wrote the check (this was a cash deal) and was on my way in less than 30 minutes! No surprises, no takeover man, no funny business of any kind. Best new car buying experience I have ever had, by far.

Here is how they wrote it up:

    MSRP $34,140 (incl dest)

    Sale price $28,182 (incl dest)
    TTL $930
    Doc fee $388
    OTD $29,500

They threw in cargo tray, rear splash guards, wheel locks and anti-theft VIN window etching.

I contacted 30-40 dealers in the Southeast and this wound up being my best "verifiable" quote. I had one other dealer offer to go lower but he had no Pilots in stock, was somewhat evasive in the emails and didn't seem too interested in doing business. A number of dealers flatly refused to match or beat $29,500 (including all of the metro Birmingham dealers). Several said that it was a "losing deal" and urged me to get back in contact with them once I found out about the hidden catch in the deal I was offered. There was none.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. Might not be the cheapest EX-L w/RES anyone ever bought but I'm confident that it was a decent deal and we are happy with our new vehicle.
  • slb3slb3 Member Posts: 7
Thought I'd share my recent experience (June 3, 2007):

$28,200 for the EX-L 4WD without any dealer installed options

    MSRP $33,840 (incl. destination)
    Invoice $30,530
    Mfg to Dealer Cash ($2,000)
    Price paid: $28,200 + tax & license

    So basically $5,600 off MSRP

Through the Costco program, the "firm" offer was $28,500 including wheel locks, mud guards, and trunk liner (all of which I find worthless). I found the better deal after doing the "Get a Quote" feature on several dealer's websites.

I feel good about the Pilot price, but I think I got hosed on my trade-in.

First things first, Thanks to all who post here the information you provided was invalueable.

    Facts and Figures

I started researching the Pilot EX AWD awhile ago for a friend at work. When she was ready I sent out quote requests to dealers in a 50 mile radius (15) on 5/29/07 and recieved back quotes ranging from $29018 + fees to $25004 + fees.

On 5/31/07 I contacted the internet sales manager with the $25004 quote to see if he was for real and he assured me that on the last day of the month he was ready to deal.

We went down there (Commonwealth Honda - Lawrence, Mass.) that day and 3-4 hours later finalized this deal.

    MSRP $31540 (incl dest)

    Sale price $24811
    Dest. $595
    Doc. fee $193
    OTD $25599
    No tax for NH residents

She was offered the 7/120 extended warranty starting at $1700 to a final offer of $1200 which I am not sure if there was a dedutible or not but she refused.
    Online price is $960

    Also offered:

    Splash guards $90...Online $40
    Cargo tray $123...Online $67
    Wheel locks $88...Online $34
    Cross bars $236...Online $136

    Refused all!!!

Overall a good learning experience and I would deal with them again if need be.

    What do ya'll think?

I hope this helps someone else and thanks again for the information!!!

I've read all the messages regarding getting the best price quote and am getting a bit overwhelmed. If ask for a price for the EX-L 2WD (don't need 4WD in OK) at $24,500 (this includes the $2000 dealer cash back)would this be a good deal? Should I go higher or lower. Thanks for your thoughts.
  • jfritschjfritsch Member Posts: 958
$7700 off MSRP would be unbelieveable for right now. Nail him down immmediately over the phone for doc fees taxes title and such, get the VIN and play hard to get when you get to the dealership for 24000 if possible. In any event getting it at that price is great and you should jump on it if he isn't blowing smoke or you didn't get a typo.

    2WD.

I would assume that the AWD model would sell for ~$1300 more (or about $30,800 OTD in Jasper, AL, w/our tax rate of 3.25%).

Thanks for sharing all the info on this board… most helpful.

Looking in Minnesota and have the following two deals.

    Pilot EX AWD
    MSRP:29290
    Internet Price:24295 (plus TTL)

Pilot EX-L AWD w/Rear Entertainment System
    MSRP:$25,440.00 (from dealer's website)

I think the EX-L deal is too good to be true, but would welcome thoughts on the EX deal.

Wanted to share my experience of Purchasing Ex-L aberdeen green from Jacksonville, FL

As I had a trade-in, I knew that I won't get the best deals anyway after going through Carsdirect and edmunds I sent out emails out to three dealers. Tried using Costco but response was not good.
First dealer Lucas quoted me 27,521 + dealer add-ons +TTL

Ended-up buyiong from Coggin. Overall buying erxperiece was good. The trade-in value was in the lower end of my range.

MSRP: $34000 (including Dest/Dealer add-ons: Wheel Lock, Mats, pinstripe, rear mudguard, reverse sensors)

    OTD : 30,400
    Negotiated Price: 28500

mAY NOT BE THE BEST DEAL, after reading all the post. But I am quite happy with the buy. :)

    I will post pictures later-on

    Thanks
