Good luck in your ventures as well. I know I will have to make a decision eventually, however as we all know.. that is never in the dealers "best interest". It is nice for those in N.Cal and the deep south get some VERY sweet deals.. I'm hoping that will work its way up to the pacific northwest!!
How much should I expect to pay for an 07 Honda Piolt LX 2WD? I am located in Southern California and dealers here are advertising the car for 25,000. I was thinking 23,500 OTD would be a good figure to aim for? What do you think?
With or without Honda Financing? Using Honda Financing you should be able to buy an AWD EXL-N for 29,000 plus doc and TTL. That doesn't even touch the dealers holdback so if they have inventory they should be happy to see it go for that. For non-Honda financing add $500.00.
It sure seems like it can vary greatly depending upon region a bit. I haven't made too great an effort to shop around at all local dealers since I have been waiting to see what the new dealer incentives look like after 7/3. However, my time spent in the Seattle area looking around for a EX-L AWD NAV has mostly hovered around $30,500-31,000. I've haven't had any luck yet on getting into the $29k range.
They didn't specify, but thats something good to keep in mind. Thanks for the info...I am going to try to go on the 4th to purchase it if I can get a good deal.
I'm not seeing dealers in the Southwest getting to that low of figures. It appears that either the invoice pricing on Edmunds is lower or they won't budge to $2500 under invoice. I was told that there is the $2000 manufacturer to dealer incentive or $500 with financing. When I asked about "standard" financing and $2500 below... I was told you can't combine.
Best prices this weekend for 2wd EX-L RES was $28,800, and AWD EX-L (no RES or NAV) for $27,600. Can't wait to hear about updates on incentives for 7/3...
That's pure baloney, run from the dealer or idiot salesperson who's trying to tell you that. 2K no matter what. 500 more with HFC. This I am absolutely sure of. I basically shopped on-line and used the biggest dealer a state away to leverage smaller closer dealers into a invoice - 2500 + doc fee and of course TTL. They still make the 2% hold back and get to clear a 2007 because the 2008s are already coming off the loaders here in New England. I'm not pulling the trigger until the July incentives are announced which some say is tomorrow while others say will be July 5th. Good luck to all Pilot shoppers!
Will do... I am hanging tough until after 7/5 as well. I made an offer I could live with today ($2500 under invoice with Honda standard finance), but no dice.

Can only answer what I am seeing here in the NE. I'd go online to about 10 dealerships in your greater area. Ask for their best internet quote. The first ones I got were invoice-2500+doc fee + between 400 to 600 additional profit. But those with heavy inventory got down to 2500 below invoice plus docs and assuming HFC financing. As they say your milage may vary and it looks like it is on a regional basis. When you're negotiating with them, let them know you know what the invoice, incentives and hold back is.
And please correct me if I'm wrong. Invoice (with Dest. charge) runs about $32,600. So to get -2500 would mean purchase price of $30,000 give or take a little. So that makes sense ... but I can't quite compute where a goal of $29k comes across as reasonable to shoot for. Maybe $29,500 with Honda financing, but anything else that gets us down to $29k????
According the Honda website the current offer runs through 07/05. I know a lot of people have targeted 07/02 but I think they snuck in a few extra days. I guess they are thinking maybe dealers can eek out a few extra bucks with a "big" Independence Day Extravaganza before they need to go to a fire sale.
I just checked the edmund incentive page. I didn't see any of the rebate to dealer or customer. Only showed low APR. Anyone knows where to find it? I am sure it still offers that $2500 incentive since the carsdirect.com still has the special pricing till 7/5/07. But it didn't show how much the incentive is in cardsdirect.com.
I am watching the price too... I don't want to buy too early or too late and don't want to miss the deal. :P
I'm glad you're all talking about this. . . I'm in Chicago and the best price I've gotten so far is $27,601.31 not including anything else. That's if I take the cash back -- and $29,601.31 with the special APR (2.9-4.9%). They are saying it ends on 7/5/07. Is this a good deal or should I wait? I know it's getting close to the 2008 models, but don't want to pass up these incentives if there won't be better ones down the road.
I know you can't predict the future, but for people who are experienced with car buying -- what's your best guess? Buy now or wait??
I'd advise you to wait until after the new incentives come out. That's what I'm going to do. Dealer inventory seems to be high, so the incentive likely won't go away or even go down. There's only room for it to go up as the 2008s roll in. If you are in the Chicago area, check out O'Hare Honda. They're offering about $600 less (right now) for an EX-L 4x4. Call them or email them before you decide to do anything else. Keep us posted.
THANK YOU! You made my life much easier w/ your response. I have 2 small kids and going anywhere (that isn't fun for them of course) is an ordeal. GREAT. I'll sit tight and wait. And thanks for the O'hare suggestion. I actually just heard a radio commercial for them and forgot about it. I live closest to Ed Napleton, but it was a small lot (I know they have other dealerships in the area), but the selection was sad.
And I'd just read a thread about some trembling between 65-75 mph. Should I be concerned? Should I take a test drive on the highway with the very car I'd like to buy to make sure? THANK YOU!!
I am waiting as well... the economic laws of supply and demand do exist in the automotive world (although many dealers would say otherwise ) Check out the dealerships on-line and it is fairly accurate to see how many Pilots they have in stock... locally for my region (NW) some dealerships have 50 - 100 in stock.... the prices HAVE to come down when the 08's start to appear... its just a matter of being patient!
As to the test drive... no matter WHAT vehicle you purchase, and just before you start filling out the sales contract... just say to the salesperson... "lets take this baby out on the road!" Give a good 5 mile+ run through as many types of road speed you can. You always want to make sure its seems perfect for you.. you are dropping alot of cash for this vehicle... if you notice vibrations, or squeaking... say to the salesman, make note of the issue and you'd like to try out a different one to compare. You are NOT inconvienencing them at all!
And just for a side note... when you have a good deal you are pretty sure you are going to commit too.. please find a babysitter for the kids. I did a sale with 3 boys once... it was so distracting and the salespeople recognized it and took advantage of me. You HAVE to be at the top of your game...
You're going to want to take the exact car that you are considering purchasing on at least a 15 mile test ride where you can get up to speeds from 65-75 mph. This is the range where the vibration will occur. Make sure that you have the radio off and told the salesman to be quiet. Test it throughout that range with and without cruise control and with and without the A/C on. You'll know if it has the defect if you test it like that. Don't let the salesmen tell you that the tires have flat spots from sitting parked too long either. Those flat spots only last a short distance before they are driven out. Oh yeah, and make sure you try to find a smooth road.
Thank you for all this helpful advice. You know, the more I find out, the more I realize how unprepared I am -- and this is with days of research from all kinds of sources.
I took a test drive last week, but kept it to side streets -- I'm not used to an SUV, so I wanted to see how I felt in it. I will certainly be more specific -- with the car I choose, and make sure it's in this exact car I take for the highway drive.
There seems to be so many things to be duped on, even after a price is agreed upon. Any other major issues to be aware of? And is it best to go with dealer financing? What do they consider excellent credit? I know I'm over 700, but if I'm not high enough, will this greatly affect the rate? I've also heard of dealers lying to you about your score to not give you the best rate. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
You're right. They make it seem like they're doing YOU a favor by selling you a car. And with gas prices so high (Chicago has the highest in the nation), I can't imagine people will clear their inventory without an incentive.
And when I do get to the point of buying, I will not bring my toddler along (my infant is only a few months old, so she has to be there) but I know exactly what you mean by being taken advantage of in this situation. It's distracting to buy eggs and cheese with kids, I couldn't IMAGINE buying an expensive SUV with them in eyesight. http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com/media/townhall/webxicons/emotorcons/emo_smiley.gif
This has all helped tremendously! This is the best source for informing yourself against shady treatment. Please keep in touch and post when you've made your purchase!
re: Your credit score and financing rate. Aa a general guideline, you should get a very good rate for any score above 700. However, the 'best' rates generally go to those with 750+ scores. Dealers usually get income/incentives on the financing as well, whether it's a % of the deal of flat $ amount. I have heard anything from 1-2% incentives for certain financing options to $500 if they put through honda financing.
The lowest quote I received for NJ was $27,423 for the EX-L. I am also waiting to see what the incentives for July will be. Today, I received a call from the dealer informing me that the current incentive expires on 7/5/07.
MSRP is $34,740. I am trying to help my sister with this deal. Dealer says he can't give her as good a deal because she is paying cash. There is also a $399 charge for wheel locks, pinstripe, protection. And a $399 dealer overhead charge.
I am not trying to get a screaming deal. I think $600 over invoice is fair, but they act like they are doing you a favor. Not used to this kind of treatment.
Was this price with the special financing? I was told you can't combine both cash back and special APR, but then again, I won't be buying it by tomorrow, when they say will be the end of this deal. But there's got to be something as good or better as the days/weeks go on, don't you think? That was my main question from the start, and I thinking waiting is the thing to do.
Tell the dealer that you are not paying for the WORTHLESS pinstripes and locks...etc. It is absolutely absurd that they try to rip people off like that. I am morally opposed to the doc fee, but sometimes there is nothing you can do.
As far as $600.00 over invoice...that would be a huge ripoff right now. You should be looking at paying NO MORE than 2000-2500 less than invoice. In other words, take the invoice price, subtract the 399 for wheel locks, subtract 2500. That would be a more than fair offer for the dealer. He's already making a 2% holdback as well as about 1.5% floorplan on it....not to mention the doc fee of 399 which is nothing but pure profit. Roughly, that adds up to about $1600 worth of profit for the dealer (or more if they refuse to give you the additional 500 off for paying cash).
I'm looking to get the 4WD Pilot EX-L with the Rear Entertainment System (DVD), located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I've contacted about 10 dealers via phone, the best deal I'm getting is in the 29,500 range. I asked one guy if he could get me anywhere in the 28k range, and he said good luck -- didn't even want to give me a number at that point.
It was David Michael at Freehold, New Jersey. Also, DCH Academy Honda quoted me $27,498.00. I'm holding out for the new incentives for July. I will be purchasing on consumerreport.org a dealer pricing which will give me the dealer's cost for the car and work my way up from that price. This will include the holdbacks and any other deals they get from the manufacturer.
I'd have to agree with dpres... you are getting schnookered. The dealers put on this front to make you think you are getting a fantastic deal... but in reality you are not. The "extra's" are a farce and so not worth it! I don't know why they think they can charge 100 bucks to "install" floor mats! I'd aim for 28500 - 29000.
I think the new incentives are out as of July 6. I was at a dealer late tonight and they said they are better than the incentives that expired on July 5.
Thanks to the help on this forum I got an EX-L AWD in Maryland near DC for $27149 + $595 destination and $100 processing plus TTL. That's with only two days of e-mails and internet shopping.
Billy, congrats on your purchase... I am interested to see what incentives are going to be offered. I had another follow up call yesterday from a dealership still trying to get me to buy at over 30K. I had to once again gently remind the salesperson that I do believe in the laws of supply and demand... they've got alot of supply...and they are not moving. I'm a patient person. By the end of this month, I have a feeling that alot of them will be scrambling as I see the 08's are showing up on the dealerships websites.
The best price offer came from Landmark in Alexandria. Ourisman in Bethesda and College Park Honda agreed to match it. A couple of others said it's an impossible price. Ourisman in Bethesda is the closest dealer so we went with them. They are very good folks there, but like almost every dealer they do try to sell the undercoating, extended warranty, etc... it is their business but you just have to do what Nancy Reagan says: "Just say no." If for some reason you want the extras from the dealer be sure to specify them when getting bids.
They wanted to see my best price offer from the other dealer, so be prepared to bring a copy with you.
When getting bids make it clear that you won't pay for dealer-installed accessories. Good luck!
Billy
P.S. I also looked into a pre-negotiated price deal through USAA. It came in at $30,295 from a dealer 40 miles from my house. Some "deal."
My dealer just called and told me the $500 financing was gone but that dealer incentives on 2007 pilots have been increased to 3500 ! I'm heading there right now.
Got a similar call from several dealers today. The best one gave a price of 26,425 + TTL for a EXL 4WD. Will be visiting them today. These dealers are in Maryland.

$25,768 from Wilde Honda in WI. Seems like the new incentives are in place. Last year (last day of July) I was able to get almost $2000 below that price. Kicking myself for not taking it! Although the inventory was over 70 at this dealer that was a huge factor.
It was just a matter of time... now... incentives can vary by region. Do you have a website listing this information as a national incentive? Its about time for alot of us to pounce!
It's also $3,500 in the Southern CA. Honda doesn't have any updated information posted yet. However, my CarsDirect.com person told me incentive increased to $3,500 (their website doesn't reflect it yet. He said it will be updated tomorrow) and quoted me the price reflecting increased amount. So, I'm out to get my Pilot today.
