I want a EX-L with entertainment package. The first dealer wont get below 32500.
Didn't push them at all since I bought a different car, but was ready to pull the trigger and try for lower by Dec 31st if my other deal fell through. They had the color I wanted on-line that's why I tried them first. Some of the other dealers have had approx invoice posts from ads, didn't get far enough to push any of the 5-6 guys in and around the city area.
Good luck.
28894 (Invoice)
+515 (destination)
-936 (hold back)
+ 700 (towing package)
---------
$29,146
The lowest they finally offered (including destination + towing package) was $29,407. I took it (paid $261 more than what others reported at 3% below invoice). I don't think they would have gone any lower (we negotiated for several hours).
Take these print-outs with you to the dealer. First get them down as low as you can without it, then at the last minute, show them the print-out and make them go lower. Stay firm. Today might be the last day they are willing to go that low.
There was one slight change from the previously agreed transaction. I had thought I was buying the Pilot I test drove a week ago. However, on Saturday, 1/1, they received a shipment of vehicles including a matching silver Nav (which I saw, still in its wrapper, yesterday).
Sometime Saturday or today they traded the unit I test drove and so I got the one delivered on Saturday. The odometer showed 5 miles as I drove it off the lot.
Again - the numbers:
$34,635 - MSRP
$31,206.39 - Invoice
$30,500 - purchase price including destination charge
$100 document fee
It could be my imagination but it does seem that the driver's seat has a bit more travel than the '04 Pilot traded in tonight - an important consideration given my 6-4 height.
This forum as well as HondaPilot.Org provided me with excellent information on market conditions that helped with the negotiation process. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to stay connected and providing your market information.
My St. Louis dealership (Stephen Vincel Honda) was great to work with.
Until today I was struggling with the decision between a Base Model MDX and the the EX-L. The thing that pushed me over the line towards the Pilot was the arrogance of the Acura dealerships not to negotiate much off the MSRP of the MDX. The difference in invoice prices of the two vehicles was $4,223. The difference in MSRP's was $4,635. The differnce between my final quotes for what I could acquire either vehicle grew to $5,648 from a dealership 200 miles away and $6,478 from St. Louis dealerships. So as a result I am a new Pilot owner.
Although there are two Acura stores here in Columbus, I did not find them to be particularly competitive.
Well, I didn't get to make a year end deal on a Pilot. I did email Hugh White on Monday, the 3rd of January, and got a bottom offer of 29,900 (EX-L). That's not even close to some of the Ohio deals that occurred and it didn't even beat the 1% over invoice deal I was offered in Indianapolis. So now I am on hold again. Luckily, I don't have to make a deal immediately. I feel like I was chasing a ghost. I didn't find anyone willing to listen to the below invoice offers over email. And trying to get to all the dealerships for the hard sell is impossible. It's hard to stomach 1000-1500 above invoice from the local dealership when you hear about what's being had elsewhere. At least I am doing the research ahead of time instead of kicking myself reading these forums afterwards.
Thanks all for the price paid/buying input.

Steven Vincel emailed me a quote from my edmunds reqest, They quoted invoice, how did you get below invoice with them. I was there yesterday and may have looked at your vehicle. Were you working with the internet sales person very long? I just corresponded email with her a couple of times and have not found the correct vehicle yet. The financing is supposed to be good till 1/5/05.
We picked up the Pilot at 7:30 last night.
I was ready to buy the Pilot last Friday (31st), but the internet manager was off work due to the holiday so I was not able to buy it on the 31st as planned. Another dealership in St. louis quoted $500 under invoice if I was able to buy before month end for them to meet their sales goals. Stephen Vincel agreed to match the price since I came in on the 31st and gave them the opportunity to get my business.
I actually began to work with the internet sales manager about 6 months ago when I was looking at an Accord. I found him to be very patient and responsive to my questions. I would hoghly recommend the dealership.
I've never seen anything like it at a Honda store and doubt I ever will again. It seems likely you were in contact with them after they hit their magic number.
Can get NAV and RES together
Bluetooth (handsfree) phone capability
updated voice activated NAV
updated stability control program
memory seats/mirrors
side curtains for all passengers
higher level sound system
On Star
XM radio
marginally more HP (probably just a marketing gimmick though)
different headrests (fronts are still adjustable)
slightly better/softer leather (my opinion)
Pilot advantages:
lots more storage room (especially in the front)
more overall room
costs less
The sound system in the base MDX and Pilot EX-L is the same wattage and speakers, but the Pilot includes a 6cd changer and cassette player. The Touring Package adds a 6 CD changer and Bose speaker system with a bigger amp.

Experience was good, but had no real negotiation room because the 2.9% APR financing deal was going to expire in 48 hours. They knew this, knew I wanted the car, and I had no real time to "walk out", etc.
Also, contacted several local dealers, and even carsdirect.com, and no one could really do any better than around $29,500.
The adapter for Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod is compatible with more than 3 million Pioneer car stereos sold during the past several years, the company said. The device allows users play songs from an iPod player through the car stereo and to scroll through playlists using the stereo's front panel controls. The adapter will also charge the player's internal battery. Pioneer said the adapter will be available in March and sell for about $140. Currently available iPod FM transmitters, which are not controlled through the stereo, range in price from $20 to $80.
Alpine has a similar item.
Invoice: $29402
Trade-In: $11,250
2.9%/5 years
MONEY FACTOR WAS .00149
RESIDUAL WAS $20,233.70 (32,635 * 62%)
MONTHLY PAYMENT WAS 328.84 + TAX
NO CAP COST REDUCTION
MONEY @ SIGNING WAS:
$595.00 - ACQUISITION
$358.76 - FIRST MONTH
$375.00 - SECURITY DEPOSIT (OTHERWIDSE MONEY FACTOR WOULD BE .00159)
$35.00 - DOCUMENTATION FEE $157.75 - DMV FEES
TOTAL UPFRONT FEES - $1,521.51
HOW DOES THIS LOOK?
I am in the process of buying a Honda Pilot EX-L. WIll post the result here as soon as the deal is finalized.
I assume this is a 42 month lease
The depriciation portion of the $328.84 is:
($29,409.12-$20,233.70)/42 months = $218.46
The interest portion of the $328.84 is
(29,409.12+20,233.70) x .00149 = $73.97
This doesn't total $328.84
Something isn't right.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
THE 62% DEPRECIATION WAS FOR THE 36 MONTH LEASE
This also would be a very good purchase deal at 29,409.12 + tax + dov + dmv (say 31,400 OTD)
So let use this example to compare lease vs buy
I will compare owing a car for 9 years vs leasing 3 car for three 3 year terms
I have always wanted to do this.
You need to reference post 3323 for the lease deal and what the purchase deal would of been.
Of Course I have to make some assumptions
Lease Assumptions:
lease money factor is always .00149 (3.576%)
inflation is 3%
every 3 years true out of pocket is 595+35+158=788 since security deposit is refunded
no wear and tear charges or mileage overruns i.e. your keep your car in good shape
Purchase Assumptions
loan rate 4%
loan term is 9 years
payment would then be $346.49
notice payment is about the same as the lease payment that is why I picked a 9 year term
Assumptions in both cases
sales tax is 6% and sales tax is only due on the lease payment not the capital cost of the lease.
Approximate Lease Cost Would be $43,500
36 mos x 328.84 x 1.06 (tax)
36 mos x 328.84 x inflation (1.09)x 1.06
36 mo x 328.84 x 1.09 x 1.09 x 1.06
out of pocket 3 x 788
Total Purchase Cost is 37,400
108 mos x 346.49
After 9 years the pilot might have a resell value of $5000 but you will occur some additional maintenance (I estimate $4000 or so) so I call this a wash.
So I conclude to drive a new pilot every 3 years vs the same one for 9 years costs about $6100 more or $678 per year or $57 per month.
Leasing is not that bad after all.
30883 - vehicle
515 - destination
31398 - total
4.25% interest from Honda (2.9% ended 1/5/05). Remote starter included in total price. Thanks to all for sharing their buying and pricing experiences!
Thanks
Going through one of the "invoice" Internet quote services, I've gotten a few quotes from area dealers for a 2005 Pilot at about 4.5 to 5% over invoice (before fees). I was anticipating something much closer to invoice, if not below.
So my question is do I still have to haggle with the local dealers to get the price down further? I thought the reason for these sites is so we wouldn't have to dicker. Or is it that dealers in sparsely populated areas (central Illinois) just don't sell for a "reasonable" profit 'cause they know they can put the screws to us?
