I finally took the plunge today and purchased a night hawk black EX-L RES from Sam Swope Honda in Louisville, KY. I worked with them for about a week on pricing and they finally got where I needed to be. It seems the $500.00 dealer cash some have talked about in this forum may be true but I decided not to push the subject with my salesman . I purchased for $30,135.00 + tax and fees. This seems to be about 2% below invoice on the price itself, but I figure they have to make some profit. The salesman said they had sold about 25 Pilot's this week and and at these prices he's probably telling the truth. Of course these deal's according to him end Monday the 3rd but Honda better keep them close to what they are doing now or it may be a slow January. The business office experience was great. The business manager offered an extended warranty but no high pressure, I decided to wait. May end up buying from Curry Honda, but I have 36K to make up my mind, so I am not in a rush. Overall, great experience and I thank everyone in here for sharing their buying experiences. It really helped me save some money on the vehicle I wanted.

Which dealers are prone to better deals in the St Louis market. I just went to one and they are sticker minus 2k and then add a lot for dealer add ons, at least 800 of dealer add ons, one had 1900 of added equip.

I want a EX-L with entertainment package. The first dealer wont get below 32500.

We're starting to shop for an '05 Pilot EX with leather and got an estimated price of $37K and then "dickering" can begin. Yikes. Does anyone know of a dealership in our area (even northern Idaho or Montana) that deals? Thanks.
  • bigblueindybigblueindy Member Posts: 18
Harper, you would be better off talking with someone like Mike Pruitt Honda or Jay Honda in Ohio. They could ship the Pilot to you for even at $1K and still save you probably $3-4K from what you are being quoted. The only thing, if you are serious you had better get some deals started tomorrow because the Honda special runs out Monday the 3rd and the January deals might not be as attractive. Happy shopping.
  • bajabill1bajabill1 Member Posts: 17
what are the Honda deals, beyond the financing special, that are to expire soon.
  • bigblueindybigblueindy Member Posts: 18
As I stated in my buying experience post. Dealer's must be getting some type of kick back from Honda to push these Pilot's out the door under invoice. The only thing is baja you must find a high volume dealer in your area like I did in Swope Honda here in Louisville who is selling enough Pilot's to get manufacture to dealer incentive's. I just believe if you are serious you must start tomorrow working on a deal because from what I was told will be over Monday and other's in this forum seem to think so also. Good luck.

Thought I'd pass along that I quickly got a 29.5K quote ($100 above invoice) on an EX-L in the Portland, OR Area (Capitol Honda). Good through end of Dec, but assuming they'd go the 5th. With the 2.9% deal from the factory a good deal...

Didn't push them at all since I bought a different car, but was ready to pull the trigger and try for lower by Dec 31st if my other deal fell through. They had the color I wanted on-line that's why I tried them first. Some of the other dealers have had approx invoice posts from ads, didn't get far enough to push any of the 5-6 guys in and around the city area.

Unfortunately, yes I have felt a very heavy vibration at speeds above 70Mph on my trip to Florida in my 2003 PilotEX-L, which gets progressively worse as the speed increases. I have had the vehicle back two times for the problem with no resolution. I even pointed out bulges/unevenness in the side walls of the Goodyear tires. I am going to be taking the vehicle back again and this time I am going to request that I drive so I can show them what the vibration feels like. If it is the tires, what is Honda waiting for after the Ford Explorer incident. Will keep you posted with results.
  • b123b123 Member Posts: 3
I am having the same vibration issue in 2005 EX-L as well. Above 70mph, the steering starts vibrating quite visibly. Can't believe, Honda is cutting corners to save few dollars in tires. They should have stuck with Michelin tires. I am going to take to dealer tomorrow. Yes, you are right. How do we take this matter to Honda's attention before it becomes a serious issue? Keep your experiences posted here.

Harper1, I got pricing of $34,500 for 05 Pilot EX with leather and navigation at Valley Honda with Costco pricing. That is still high, but not much pricing help in Eastern Washington. You may try Seattle or Portland. I am looking at either pilot, mdx or highlander. I am not getting any good deals on pilot or mdx in Eastern Washington, including Seattle or Portland.

    Good luck.

Bought a Pilot EX-L at invoice (29409.12) at Renton Honda (east Seattle) on Jan. 1. Dealer said the price is only good on that day though because they need to reach 200 sales in order to get the incentive from Honda.

Dealer in Houston first quoted $33,530 + 1,195 for towing package. After complaining that this was to much and people on this website were getting 3% below invoice, they came back with 30,879, then again at $29,707. Finally, I showed them the print-out from this discussion board that I brought with me showing:

    28894 (Invoice)

    +515 (destination)

    -936 (hold back)

    + 700 (towing package)

    ---------

    $29,146

The lowest they finally offered (including destination + towing package) was $29,407. I took it (paid $261 more than what others reported at 3% below invoice). I don't think they would have gone any lower (we negotiated for several hours).

Take these print-outs with you to the dealer. First get them down as low as you can without it, then at the last minute, show them the print-out and make them go lower. Stay firm. Today might be the last day they are willing to go that low.

I received a quote of $27932 +ttl in Central Texas area. By my calculations that's $500 over invoice. Is this a good deal? Thanks for the help.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
I posted the details (in #3262) Friday night and picked up the vehicle tonight. It was a very pleasing tranaction all the way around with Hugh White in Columbus. Had to wait a bit for salesman and finance person to be free on this busy night but the actual transaction itself only took about 10 minutes (if that long). All paperwork was complete and ready to go. No attempt was made to market an extended warranty or credit life/disability insurance.

There was one slight change from the previously agreed transaction. I had thought I was buying the Pilot I test drove a week ago. However, on Saturday, 1/1, they received a shipment of vehicles including a matching silver Nav (which I saw, still in its wrapper, yesterday).

Sometime Saturday or today they traded the unit I test drove and so I got the one delivered on Saturday. The odometer showed 5 miles as I drove it off the lot.

    Again - the numbers:

    $34,635 - MSRP

    $31,206.39 - Invoice

$30,500 - purchase price including destination charge

    $100 document fee

It could be my imagination but it does seem that the driver's seat has a bit more travel than the '04 Pilot traded in tonight - an important consideration given my 6-4 height.

Anyone had a recent good experience purchasing a Honda Pilot in Atlanta, GA area? Dealers within serveral hours of driving distance (e.g., in TN, AL) will be fine for me too. Appreciate any input here. Thanks.

I just returned from my local Honda dealership as the the owner of a 2005 Sage Brush Pearl EX-L. The bottom-line purchase price was $28,909 including destination and processing fees ($500 below invoice). It included the splashguards and pinstripping. Plus I took advantage of the 2.9% interest rate for 5 years.

This forum as well as HondaPilot.Org provided me with excellent information on market conditions that helped with the negotiation process. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to stay connected and providing your market information.

My St. Louis dealership (Stephen Vincel Honda) was great to work with.

Until today I was struggling with the decision between a Base Model MDX and the the EX-L. The thing that pushed me over the line towards the Pilot was the arrogance of the Acura dealerships not to negotiate much off the MSRP of the MDX. The difference in invoice prices of the two vehicles was $4,223. The difference in MSRP's was $4,635. The differnce between my final quotes for what I could acquire either vehicle grew to $5,648 from a dealership 200 miles away and $6,478 from St. Louis dealerships. So as a result I am a new Pilot owner.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
I went through the same thing in deciding between an MDX and another Pilot for my wife. In the end, much as I wanted the side curtain airbags offered by the MDX, the street price difference was, as your experience showed, more than one would otherwise expect right now.

Although there are two Acura stores here in Columbus, I did not find them to be particularly competitive.

    Hi all,

Well, I didn't get to make a year end deal on a Pilot. I did email Hugh White on Monday, the 3rd of January, and got a bottom offer of 29,900 (EX-L). That's not even close to some of the Ohio deals that occurred and it didn't even beat the 1% over invoice deal I was offered in Indianapolis. So now I am on hold again. Luckily, I don't have to make a deal immediately. I feel like I was chasing a ghost. I didn't find anyone willing to listen to the below invoice offers over email. And trying to get to all the dealerships for the hard sell is impossible. It's hard to stomach 1000-1500 above invoice from the local dealership when you hear about what's being had elsewhere. At least I am doing the research ahead of time instead of kicking myself reading these forums afterwards.

Thanks all for the price paid/buying input.

Steven Vincel emailed me a quote from my edmunds reqest, They quoted invoice, how did you get below invoice with them. I was there yesterday and may have looked at your vehicle. Were you working with the internet sales person very long? I just corresponded email with her a couple of times and have not found the correct vehicle yet. The financing is supposed to be good till 1/5/05.

We picked up the Pilot at 7:30 last night.

I was ready to buy the Pilot last Friday (31st), but the internet manager was off work due to the holiday so I was not able to buy it on the 31st as planned. Another dealership in St. louis quoted $500 under invoice if I was able to buy before month end for them to meet their sales goals. Stephen Vincel agreed to match the price since I came in on the 31st and gave them the opportunity to get my business.

I actually began to work with the internet sales manager about 6 months ago when I was looking at an Accord. I found him to be very patient and responsive to my questions. I would hoghly recommend the dealership.
  • bajabill1bajabill1 Member Posts: 17
thanks, what other dealer was in this price range. All of the others Ive been to want to be way above invoice and loaded with dealer installed equip, short supply etc.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Sorry to hear that, mabubba. When I picked up the Pilot last night I was told they had hit their sales goal (and there went any possibility I might also buy an Odyssey).

I've never seen anything like it at a Honda store and doubt I ever will again. It seems likely you were in contact with them after they hit their magic number.

Huey's was at $30,210 and St. Louis Honda was at invoice less $500 if purchased by 12/31/04 so they would hit a sales target to qualify for President's status.

beside side curtain air bags. What other features do the MDX have over the Pilot
  • carguy1234carguy1234 Member Posts: 233
I had the same question as you. As far as I can tell, here are the things MDX has over Pilot:

Can get NAV and RES together

    Bluetooth (handsfree) phone capability

    updated voice activated NAV

    updated stability control program

    memory seats/mirrors

    side curtains for all passengers

    higher level sound system

    On Star

    XM radio

marginally more HP (probably just a marketing gimmick though)

different headrests (fronts are still adjustable)

    slightly better/softer leather (my opinion)

    Pilot advantages:

lots more storage room (especially in the front)

    more overall room

    costs less :)
  • jkotovskyjkotovsky Member Posts: 9
Many of the items that you list are included in the Touring package. The cost of the Touring package over the Base package is another $2,825 (difference in MSRP). Thus, the MSRP diffence between the Pilot EX-L and the MDX Touring grows to $7,460.

The sound system in the base MDX and Pilot EX-L is the same wattage and speakers, but the Pilot includes a 6cd changer and cassette player. The Touring Package adds a 6 CD changer and Bose speaker system with a bigger amp.

    I'm in Fairfield County, CT

    2005 EX-L

    Black Exterior

    Gray Leather Interior

    Price: $29,710 ($300 over invoice)

    Destination: $515

    Wheel Locks: Free

    VIN Etching: $169

    Auto Armour Coating: $250

    Subtotal: $30,644

    Tax: 6% in CT: $1838

Tax Break on trade in: $660

    Total: $31,822

Experience was good, but had no real negotiation room because the 2.9% APR financing deal was going to expire in 48 hours. They knew this, knew I wanted the car, and I had no real time to "walk out", etc.

Also, contacted several local dealers, and even carsdirect.com, and no one could really do any better than around $29,500.

The adapter for Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod is compatible with more than 3 million Pioneer car stereos sold during the past several years, the company said. The device allows users play songs from an iPod player through the car stereo and to scroll through playlists using the stereo's front panel controls. The adapter will also charge the player's internal battery. Pioneer said the adapter will be available in March and sell for about $140. Currently available iPod FM transmitters, which are not controlled through the stereo, range in price from $20 to $80.

    Alpine has a similar item.

Thanks to this site I was armed with information. I received a verbal quote from a Kansas City dealership after some negotiations with the only local dealership. I offered them invoice with KBB trade-in value allowance on a 2001 Subaru Outback LL Bean with 74K. Was about $1K off and I told them I would go to KC and they took it. Fortunately, it was icy, with moderate snow and temps in the teens. They weren't busy and wanted to sell a car. Probably could have got $500 under invoice in KC, but am satisfied considering our small market and I kept the dollars at home.

    Invoice: $29402

    Trade-In: $11,250

I bought an Accord last month from Honda Carland in Roswell,GA, just north of Atlanta. Another family member purchased a Pilot from Honda Carland also. Carland was very easy to work with. I would try them or Hennessey Honda, quotes for both vehicles were real close, Carland is just more convenient for me.

Few of these around will that impact the ability to get dealers to compete for the sale? Will those with them do dealer trades?

    CAP COST WAS INVOICE $29,409.12

    MONEY FACTOR WAS .00149

    RESIDUAL WAS $20,233.70 (32,635 * 62%)

MONTHLY PAYMENT WAS 328.84 + TAX

    NO CAP COST REDUCTION

    MONEY @ SIGNING WAS:

    $595.00 - ACQUISITION

    $358.76 - FIRST MONTH

$375.00 - SECURITY DEPOSIT (OTHERWIDSE MONEY FACTOR WOULD BE .00159)

    $35.00 - DOCUMENTATION FEE $157.75 - DMV FEES

    TOTAL UPFRONT FEES - $1,521.51

    HOW DOES THIS LOOK?

The lease calculation should be as follows:

I assume this is a 42 month lease

The depriciation portion of the $328.84 is:

    ($29,409.12-$20,233.70)/42 months = $218.46

The interest portion of the $328.84 is

    (29,409.12+20,233.70) x .00149 = $73.97

    This doesn't total $328.84

    Something isn't right.

  • sportymonksportymonk Member Posts: 258
Some have asked and it is a popular item and just thought I would pass it along. There was a special adapter for the Accord but for the Pilot and other vehicles, this appears to be the best option.

I used Edmunds lease calculator and figured 36 months. It came up with the $328 before tax. The original post did say "$328.84+tax"

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

I would think they would deal on a LX just as they do for an EX. Maybe you will get a better deal since most people are buying EX's. IMO, It really boils down to how much time you have, not the model.
  • obrien040362obrien040362 Member Posts: 134
This is a very good lease deal for a 36 month term.

This also would be a very good purchase deal at 29,409.12 + tax + dov + dmv (say 31,400 OTD)

So let use this example to compare lease vs buy

I will compare owing a car for 9 years vs leasing 3 car for three 3 year terms

I have always wanted to do this.

You need to reference post 3323 for the lease deal and what the purchase deal would of been.

Of Course I have to make some assumptions

    Lease Assumptions:

lease money factor is always .00149 (3.576%)

    inflation is 3%

every 3 years true out of pocket is 595+35+158=788 since security deposit is refunded

no wear and tear charges or mileage overruns i.e. your keep your car in good shape

    Purchase Assumptions

    loan rate 4%

    loan term is 9 years

    payment would then be $346.49

notice payment is about the same as the lease payment that is why I picked a 9 year term

    Assumptions in both cases

sales tax is 6% and sales tax is only due on the lease payment not the capital cost of the lease.

Approximate Lease Cost Would be $43,500

    36 mos x 328.84 x 1.06 (tax)

    36 mos x 328.84 x inflation (1.09)x 1.06

    36 mo x 328.84 x 1.09 x 1.09 x 1.06

    out of pocket 3 x 788

    Total Purchase Cost is 37,400

    108 mos x 346.49

After 9 years the pilot might have a resell value of $5000 but you will occur some additional maintenance (I estimate $4000 or so) so I call this a wash.

So I conclude to drive a new pilot every 3 years vs the same one for 9 years costs about $6100 more or $678 per year or $57 per month.

Leasing is not that bad after all.

I posted a similar question inthe Totyota Highlander forum)

Going through one of the "invoice" Internet quote services, I've gotten a few quotes from area dealers for a 2005 Pilot at about 4.5 to 5% over invoice (before fees). I was anticipating something much closer to invoice, if not below.

So my question is do I still have to haggle with the local dealers to get the price down further? I thought the reason for these sites is so we wouldn't have to dicker. Or is it that dealers in sparsely populated areas (central Illinois) just don't sell for a "reasonable" profit 'cause they know they can put the screws to us?
  • obrien040362obrien040362 Member Posts: 134
e-mail them back with an offer closer to invoice. I bought mine for 3% below invoice and also got the towing package for $700 which is about $300 below market value. Most dealer try to get 1000 to 1200 for the towing package. I did have one dealer at 889 and here said not a penny more. Of course my deal was at the end of the year.
