Because you pay depreciation on a lease. Depreciation is the difference between the selling price and the residual. Lower selling price = lower depreciation.

In other words, every dollar you save on the selling price goes straight to you.

Example:

$30K MSRP
$15K residual

If you negotiate price of $29K, then your depreciation is $14K.
If you negotiate price of $27K, then your depreciation is $12K

$2K lower price, $2K less in lease payments.

I have appreciated your helpfulness with this process. But am having a major issue. To recap: I would like to lease a CX-5 touring, FWD with moonroof package. Have contacted 8 different Mazda dealers in the area and one located 130 miles away. After they provide a purchase price quote, and I mention lease, they either say the purchase price quoted won't apply and come back with a higher cap cost or they say they'll call back with the lease figures and don't do so. Two have said the vehicle isn't available in my color choice after checking their inventory and that was the end of the conversation. No mention of obtaining the vehicle from another dealer. One dealer has been very helpful but I would like to comparison shop with similar cap costs. I'm not coming on strong and haven't said anything about obtaining other lease quotes. Any suggestions?

Looks pretty solid if you walked away with your new car and didn't have to write a check.

There are often specific incentives available only when you purchase that can't be used when you lease, so I'm not surprised to hear that.

Do your own research and come up with a selling price you are comfortable with, then email all the dealers around you with your offer.

Do you live in an area where FWD SUV's are scarce? It's possible that there aren't many available based on geography (I live in Colorado; I would guess that less than 5% of the CX-5's in stock are FWD here).

36/12 - .00013 and 58%

Actually, 33 months is the sweet spot for September - .00001 and 61 for 33/12

.00001 MF and 61%/59% residual for 33 months
.00013 MF and 58%/56% residual for 36 months

You'd have to run the numbers both ways... guessing they will be very close.

How does this lease compare? CX-5 Touring edition. 33 months @ 10K miles/year. The dealer is asking for $275 a month with $1,500 cash at signing. The $1,500 covers taxes, fees and 1st month payment. State is CT

I am considering a 2016 CX-5 Touring with the moonroof/bose package along with 250 dollars of other options (floor mats etc). The vehicle stickers for 28,730. The purchase option amount is 17,525 (I am assuming this is the residual).I have been offered the following payment options:

The lease term is 33 month for 10000 miles.All would include the first payment:

1000 - 349 per month
2000 - 313
3000 - 281
4000 - 249

I do not have the money factor. I live in Rhode Island and the above figures include all taxes. I think the money factor the dealer is using is high. When I use the lease calculator and plug in 12,000 miles with a money factor of .00125 I get 321 per month with a 1000 down. I calculated I am getting 750 for Mazda loyalty.

The calculator gives me 321 for 10k miles. Why no change from 12k?

Am I correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll assume AWD since you are in RI ... the 33/12 numbers for the CX-5 Touring AWD are 62% and .00001. If we plug in your MSRP and selling price, I get a $0 down pre-tax payment of $280.55

Understand that down payment and money due at signing are not the same thing. There are certain up front costs of a lease - bank fee, dealer fee, first payment, tags and license - that are usually due at the beginning of a lease. Down payment reduces the selling price - and we don't recommend you do that; if the car is stolen or totaled, you lose that money.

Get the dealer to explain what the up front money will be used for, and also get the net cap cost. If the NCC is different from the selling price, ask the dealer what's been added.

I got this quote from my Mazda dealer (I am a Costco member, and they said this is invoice, but I don't recall what features it had for a GT AWD - I just want the base GT AWD).

Sale Price: 29,807.00
MF: 0.00051
RV: 18,547.05 = 62%
Incentives/rebates: $1,050 (loyalty incentive plus lease cash)
Cash owed at signing: 2,000 (includes tax, title, and fees & possibly 1st month payment which is 508.53 for tax, and 341.11 for payment)
Term: 33 months/12k

This gives me a monthly payment of $341.11 for the remaining 32 months. I leased my current vehicle, but it was a Honda holiday special so I'm still trying to figure all this out. For starters, is the MF negotiable or am I better off trying another dealer? I have a great credit score. I would be paying $2k plus tax/title/fees down rather than the 2k total. Thank you for any input!

MF is negotiable if the dealer is marking it up, which it looks like in your case they are. For 33 months the money factor is .00001 this month. Also your residual should be 61% for 12k. That residual value at 61% would be an MSRP of $30,405, which would be a base GT AWD with wheel locks. I'd go back to the dealer and tell them to try again without marking up the money factor.

MF is negotiable if the dealer is marking it up, which it looks like in your case they are. For 33 months the money factor is .00001 this month. Also your residual should be 61% for 12k. That residual value at 61% would be an MSRP of $30,405, which would be a base GT AWD with wheel locks. I'd go back to the dealer and tell them to try again without marking up the money factor.

However, be polite and tell the dealer you won't sign a deal with an inflated MF .. they know what the base rate is.

And, work with multiple Mazda dealers ... it only takes one to meet your terms.
