    Ok...so I admit when I first walked into the dealer, I got sucked into the funnel of negotiating over the payment rather than price for a 16' OB premium (all weather + a car starter). The salesman provided the numbers shown in the pictures. I initially didn't want to put anything down, but we agreed on $560 down with everything else rolled in. When I expressed concern over price (I pay $399/month for 14' Forester) they agreed to get it as close as possible to my current payment; we ended up getting to $405. Is it too late to figure out if I'm in a good spot here?

    What state is this? Only a few states tax the entire selling price, so the numbers are most likely wrong.

    Unless this is an AutoNation dealer - they are famous for showing a purchase quote then magically coming up with lease payments that really don't match the numbers.

    And, is the payoff the negative equity from your trade? That alone is adding $52-56/mo to your payment.

    This is a large dealer across WNY/Erie County (with or lovely .875 tax rate). I was curious as to what the PAYOFF was as well, I forgot to ask. I am trading the other lease, so I really don't know how they came up with it. He actually didn't even give this to me, I managed to snapshot it. He 'went to copy it for me' but came back with sales manager.

    Edit: I just emailed the sales rep and he said they were using 2.88 (0.0288?) for the money factor. Why would it be so much higher?? No answer on what the PAYOFF is.

    2.88% equates to .00120 MF - which is the base MF on the Premium.

    NY calculates sales tax on the sum of the payments, then collects it up front. That tax amount is still wrong.

    If you are trading in a lease early, it works just as if you were trading in a financed car. There is a payoff amount, a trade in amount, and the delta is either your positive or negative equity.

    Have you taken your existing car to CarMax for a quote? Dealer may be low-balling you.

    I have not taken it to CarMax. My current lease runs until March 17' (12k/per year) and I'm only at 26k now, so well under. So did he quote me the interest rate as the money factor to confuse me?

    It seems that he did.

    I would still get an independent appraisal of your car - I am a big believer in the maxim "knowledge is power". The more you know about the numbers of your deal, the less the dealer can put past you.

    So say I were to start over from the beginning using the numbers from earlier, I would obviously be trying to negotiate the price rather than the payment. If the MSRP is 29,113 and I am looking to go 0 down, would I be adding the tax right on top? For ex: 29,113+2,547.39(sales tax)=31,660.39; would I be trying to negotiate the price down from there then?

    The sales tax amount is wrong. Get the best selling price, then get a full understanding of the taxes and fees (bank fee, dealer fee, etc.). Then decide if you want to pay those up front or add them into the selling price.

    Tax in NY is calculated against the sum of the payments - as an example, if you have a 36 month lease and the payment is $350, the total is $12,600. The 8.75% tax is applied to that amount, or $1102.50.

    How come the suggested pricing is so different between TMV and TrueCar? The TMV is much lower, while TC is only a few hundred minus the MSRP?

    All banks will write a higher mileage, and reduce the residual accordingly. Usually, once you get past 15K/yr, it is on a per/mile basis, and more expensive than just reducing the residual by a set percentage.

    .00120 MF and 61% residual for 36/15. The extra 9000 miles for 36/18 will probably reduce the 36/15 residual by either $0.10 or 0.15 per mile ($900 or $1350).

    I get $462/mo with tax using those numbers.

    Confirm the adjusted cap cost the dealer is using in their quote -- it looks too good to be true.

    Found a 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium w/ EyeSight + Blind Spot Det + Rear X-Traffic Alert + Power Rear Gate ...looking for the MF and residual in CT for a 36/12K also any special lease incentives.
