    Hi Steve,

As always, thank you for the great information! It sounds like this dealer double dipped twice on the destination charge and the alarm. Time for more research and negotiation. I recently read in the news that Honda's sales have been 15% lower so maybe October would have some enticing deals. Thanks again for your wealth of info.

Projections for Honda were for a 1.6% sales increase but I haven't seen numbers yet (they are due out today). I think the Civic and CR-V are supporting Honda's US sales numbers - Odyssey sales are definitely down. So yeah, sales have at least plateaued in the US, meaning buyers can look forward to more incentives. Doesn't look like overall sales are really going to fall that much for the next two years though.

Elsewhere it may be another story - Honda sales in India are down ~19% for example.

I started emailing/calling dealers (15) on Tuesday, September 27 with a few reaching back out to me on the 29th if I didn't engage them after their quote. I had lower quotes from far away but it wasn't worth the extra drive/time. More than 5 didn't respond to my email or voicemail.

The two closest dealers in the Raleigh/Cary/Durham area weren't close and wouldn't match my written offer on Thursday/Friday (didn't email them initially): 1 @ $700 more and the other $850 more. I purchased on Friday, September 30 from a dealer 90 minutes away (Uber @ $59 after code). The dealer I purchased from didn't initially return my voice mail, but I got in touch with the person the next day on the phone and she put me in touch with the right manager. Glad I did the follow up.

2016 Odyssey EX-L, 1 mile, manufactured August 2016, wheels lock and mud flaps included

    Van: $30,963.43
    DOC fee: $589.00
    License/tags: $101.00
    Taxes (3% NC): $946.57

    OTD @ $32,600.00.

Target was $32,000 but it just wasn't happening and didn't want to negotiate for 20+ days. Inventory in color preference was becoming an issue.

Fellow triangle resident here. Where did you end up buying the van from that was 90 minutes away? I was also looking last week but did not pull the trigger. The triangle dealers wouldn't budge from $33,800, but a dealer in Danville VA quoted me $33,006.....not as good as yours! I was asking about a vanilla EX-L.
    Salesman name?
    Thank you in advance!

I wanted to post the deal I just got on Sept 30 in the DC, MD, VA area. Keep in mind it was at the end of the month, so I ended up getting down to two dealers that had to make numbers. I think if one were to hold out to the end of October and wanted any color, you may be able to score a great deal as dealers are going to start trying to hit numbers as the end of the year gets closer. It also means that there will be less inventory to choose from, so be careful.

I negotiated over email almost entirely for 2 weeks. I did take/make a few phone calls but it was closer towards the end. I got an EX-L w/ RES and no dealer added accessories. Dealer was in Laurel, MD. I was able to get another dealer in Westminster, MD as close as $34,750 OTD.

    Base Price: 31821.69 (included destination)
    Dealer Processing: 300.00
    Tax @ 6%: 1927.31
    Tag and Title: 351.00
    Total: $34,400 OTD

Interestingly, the news is somewhat mixed, did it decrease or increase. Looking at the Honda site, the heading states "records fall" but the details state an increase? http://hondanews.com/channels/corporate-sales/releases/records-fall-again-as-american-honda-reports-september-sales

It's fun trying to decipher that stuff isn't it? Your link indicates that Honda sales dipped 0.1%. comparing Sept. 2015 to Sept. 2016. Essentially flat in other words.

The details are interesting - Odyssey sales are down year to year almost 10%. That will help minivan buyers, at least until Honda cuts production or something happens with the yen. The CR-V, new Civic and especially the Pilot are carrying the load for Honda.

What are the OTD prices people are getting in Austin,TX for an EX-L with RES. I am looking to buy at the earliest [would have waited for 2017 model if it was going to be released soon].

    Get any quotes yet @anandg16?

Invoice with the $900 destination is $35,316. The True Market Value average price paid for Austin is $34,767, so some people are likely getting $2,000 below invoice. So I'd think you'd want to aim for an OTD price around invoice, depending on what your taxes are.

    Hi Stever,
Thanks for the advice. We decided to skip the RES and just go with EX-L [the kids can get some individual DVD players if they want to watch videos]. This would help us stay within a certain budget. Here's one quote I got from a dealer

    Sale Price: 31911.25
    Government Fees: 183.25
    Proc/Doc Fees: 150
    Total Taxes: 2055.50

    Total OTD: 34300.00

This is for the specific EX-L [color] I wanted. The dealer is throwing in All weather floor mats at this price.
I feel there is still some wiggle room in there. Agree?

Okay, invoice on the EX-L is $33,856. TMV is about $1,300 less. So a good selling price would be $31,800.

OTD? My rough calculation says the dealer's quote is about spot on - around $2,000 below invoice, not counting the mats.

Wiggle room? Maybe. :) Sounds like you're doing fine though -- good luck!

Thank you very much Stever. I will post my final OTD price once I finalize the deal.
  • darnoc23darnoc23 Member Posts: 16
Steve, Thank you again for your valuable information. Bought the van yesterday. I didn't go with the $28,524 2nd lowest as the drive was too far. So my pricing for any of the Southern CA folks out there were as follows:

    Vehicle Price $29,000
    Sales Tax, Document Fee 2434.40
Registration and Oher CA Fees - 300.75
    OTD - $31,736.15

It did look like prices went down a little for October as previous dealers were willing to match my lowest offer, but it was already too late.

I bought a 2015 Odyssey EX last year in August just south of DC for $27,719 ($30k even OTD) and no other dealership would touch that price. Unfortunately, that January the car overheated and caused a major fluid leak all due to a hairline crack in the headgasket. The main repair person at first glance thought it would need an entire engine rebuild, but ultimately they just replaced needed parts. I'm not comfortable with keeping this vehicle since I have 3 small children and I am paranoid at every sound that something wasn't fixed right or that I'll be screwed in a couple years when a related issue causes problems and it's not in warranty.

So, I want a new vehicle, and Honda won't work with me and rather than waste time fighting with them I'd like to just trade it in and get a new one. I'm looking at the EX again or the SE. Is it reasonable to request $29500 OTD (6% MD sales tax) for an SE? I'd get an EX again if I have to but would really love the SE instead. I just don't want to take a major hit on my trade in (12500miles) and will be going to Carmax for an estimate as well.

ETA: I would qualify for the $500 recent grad credit going on.

After a couple days of negotiating I have 3 dealers that are offering to sell me a new 2016 EXL for $31,579 and throw in the all weather floor mats. I feel this is a good price for the area (Wisconsin/Minnesota) as I have had a number of dealers also decline to match. I have a vehicle to trade so I've told them all I'll come in for them to value my trade and I'll go with whatever deal is the best at that point. My question for the forum is should I expect to get offers of full NADA or KBB value for my trade or what kind of games should I expect at this point? Thanks!

I've been checking tell me the best and the "other" Honda Odyssey prices paid forum during my search

    http://www.odyclub.com/forums/54-2011-odyssey/246777-prices-paid-2016-odysseys-46.html

Both would suggest getting an SE for $29,500 with the tax included will be hard.

Came to a deal on the Odyssey Touring at Brown Honda in Toledo, Ohio. Taking delivery on Saturday. $37,948.25, which is $1,750 under invoice.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    Congrats @jborell!

@mrschuma, if there's a CarMax near you, ask them for a quote (like @fishermom). Or even ask a used car lot. You can also appraise it here, for another "book" value.

I'm on the road and not online much this week - sorry if we missed anyone. Feel free to repost and hopefully someone will jump in with suggestions.
  • mrschumamrschuma Member Posts: 3
Thanks for the suggestions on CarMax. We have a 2008 Toyota Sienna and CarMax was on the very low end of any "book values" I've looked up. 1st dealer I went to beat the CarMax price by $1500. Glad I stopped at CarMax though so I knew I wasn't leaving anything on the table.

    Hi Everyone,
I'm in St. Louis and looking for Odyssey 2016 EXL model. I've got a few quotes, $31,749 from one dealer with manufacturer warranty terms and $31,795 from another dealer with 10 years/200,000 miles of power train warranty (Tax, license and Admin fees are extra). Do you think it is a competitive price or I can wait for some more time to get a good deal? Thanks for suggestion and comments.

    Welcome to the forums, @newhonda2016.

Invoice is $33,856, MSRP is $36,950 and the True Market Value average price paid for your area is $32,501. (all numbers include the destination).

So your quotes are okay, about $2,000 below invoice and well below the average.

With all the exclusions and exceptions, I figure a "free" dealer warranty is worth maybe $200. Maybe less, if they make it a hassle to actually try to collect on something after the manufacturer's warranty expires.

If you enjoy the process, wait until this weekend or Monday when most dealers are trying to make quota for their month end bonus money and you may be able to squeeze some more dough out. But you're doing fine as it is. Looks like plenty of inventory around too.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks @stever for the suggestions. Yes, lot of inventory for EXL  . I'll wait until this month end to grab a good deal and update the group.

First timer here, hopiing for some advice.

I'm in central VA, zip 23237. I've got an offer from a dealer for a '16 EX-L no nav no RES for $30,600 (destination included). With taxes and fees, OTD I'm looking at a little over $32,400. TMV is $31,738, so I'm coming in about $1,100 below that. My salesperson has indicated there may still be some room to negotiate further, but I've been at it for a week. Is this a decent deal?

Also, is Honda still producing the 16s? They're telling me that they don't have any more coming. Is that true, or are they just trying to push me into buying?

Thanks in advance for the help.
  • stavenmstavenm Member Posts: 1
That's an ok price, but remember, there's a new model coming out any day now, and they have lots of inventory, so expect the prices to fall more. It's likely they're not building any more, but once the 17s arrive, the 16s will be clearanced out. If you can wait a few months for the 17s inventory to build, the prices for the remaining 16s will be unbelievable. I would rather pay a little more for a 17 or a lot less for a 16.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
To add to @stavenm comments, Honda prices in NOVA are usually pretty aggressive and some of that bleeds down to Richmond and over to Virginia Beach. Looks to me like your quote is $3,256 below invoice. (That number includes destination).

If you are still shopping, you indeed may beat your quote. But if you're ready to buy, you're doing better than ok to my way of thinking.

I see about 50 Odysseys near you - about 14 of those are EX-Ls.

I also purchases an EXL with no Navi or RES for $31,450 in SoCal. I did get a quote for about $70 less, but the dealer was about an hour away from me. Thanks for all the helpful posts, I needed a car quick since my last Oddy died and I didn't have time to negotiate.

    Thanks Stever!
Let me clarify a few points.
    1. The Honda Odyssey trim that I am seeking is the Touring; I believe you selected Touring Elite, which is easily confused. Based on the above, what would the new calculations be?
    2. You are absolutely correct that Dallas buyers see a $500 benefit over Houston. It makes me lean more toward them.
    3. The estimate that you provided, $41k, is that out the door or just base+destination?
    4. The protection package is the standard Honda provided equipment (rear mat, wheel locks, etc). The other 'add-ons' are window tint and side molding.
    5. The Houston dealers provide 3 free oil changes, but you're right, thats not exactly a selling point for me as I would prefer to have my own oil.

Looking forward to your reply! Thanks again for the expert info!

    Hi @cars4life5,

Invoice is $42,056, MSRP is $45,775 and the True Market Value average price paid for your area is $42,288.

Those numbers include the $900 destination and the invoice number also includes a $150 ad fee that I don't think consumers should have to pay.

Dallas buyers have been reporting better prices in the last six months and TMV shows that Houston numbers are about $500 more. But I understand the advantages of buying local. There's about 40 or so Tourings within 50 miles of Houston, so I think the selection is good, and there's way fewer of the other trims. Wouldn't call it a glut but there's enough Tourings around that you might get a bit more off.

I think I'd target $41,000 for the selling price (with destination). I avoid dealer add-ons, not sure what's in your ProPack but usually those are just extra dealer profit. The freebies really aren't worth much considering that most people will only take advantage of the oil changes. That may just mean one $80 oil change.

Hi cars4life5- I am in the market for a 2016 Touring ( not Elite) in Dallas area and would be great if you can share your details if you already purchased it. I understand you are in Houston but atleast i can have a ballpark comparison.thanks and much appreciated.

In your area, the best seems to be $37,500 with destination. Have you had better luck? If so, what dealers?
Btw, we haven't pulled the trigger yet, but most likely soon.

Hey all -- I'm in Los Angeles and looking to pay cash for an Odyssey EX-L. I've only been price checking for a few days, but we got a quote for $30,518 which is the best of the places I've checked. Is this a reasonable price? Are we likely to get a much better deal with the 2017s show up?

I am in the Dallas area.

A friend of mine has gotten the 2016 EX-L with RES for $385 a month, no other costs. 36/12K

    Is that a good price?

I am thinking of getting the same.

Sorry @mister_spiffy, looks like we missed some posts in here. Are you still shopping?

First off, I like paying cash too, but sometimes you can get a better deal if you agree to finance. Dealers make money putting loans together.

That said, your quote is 15% below MSRP and that's very good. Another rule of thumb is that the True Market Value average price paid for your area is $3,2211, which is about $1,650 below invoice.

For the 2017s, expect the best prices to be 8 to 12% off MSRP.

Hi @stever. I'm in the 94538 and looking for a 2016 Honday Odyssey EX-L w/RES. Currently have a price of $33,200. Is that a good price to purchase? Seems like they are starting to get low with this model/trim.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    That does sound good @carallen.

Invoice with destination is $35,316 and your quote is $2,100 under that. TMV is pegged at $34,083 for your zip code. Another benchmark is that your quote is ~14% below MRSP and that's good too.

Inventory links aren't very accurate - there seem to be lots of Odysseys in your area but only 11 EX-Ls with RES. Seems like a good time to grab one.

hi everyone. just finished lease deal in Florida on a 2016 EX-L with no RES or NAV. The vehicle cost was 31648 with an adjusted capitalized cost of 32243. that does not include any tax. no extra dealers fees or tag/title fees because they they were included in the cost.

Firstly thank you for your forum, I am planning on purchasing a '16 EX-L with no RES or NAV, aiming to get in at the end of the month in South-East Florida. What price should I be aiming for, considering the new 2017 model is "teed up". Also would a certified used vehicle have as much discounting pressure and be a better financial decision?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The True Market Value average price paid for a Ft. Myers zip is $32,262, which is about $1,600 below invoice and almost 13% off MSRP. Those are good numbers - since TMV is an average your goal to beat it.

I think a good target would be $31,500, almost 15% off MSRP. Cheap!

The problem with buying in Florida are the insane doc fees. The average is $670 and many are approaching $1,000.

Anything over $50 is too much. Try adding taxes to your target number and focus on that out the door number and just negotiate that one number.

    Good luck!
