Heck of a deal! I just signed for my EX-L base and got to 31,000, def would have splurged for the extra $300 for the rear entertainment if I had your negotiation skills. Good work!
I've been going back and forth with Sienna or Odyssey, and couldn't let go of $1,500 below invoice from Honda.
Closed the deal on 7/31 at Honda dealership near Seattle.
2016 Touring Elite with Topaz exterior and truffle interior.
Base price of vehicle: 39,000
Dealer added option: 535 (7 years oil change and door guards)
sales tax: 3,874
Doc fee: 150
I wanted to get rid of the $535 that includes 7 years of oil change and door edge
guard crap but they were so keen on adding this. Came down from lifetime oil change
of $1200 to 7 years of $535. I kept that but in return got all season car mat and cargo mat.
During negotiation process I got a call from another dealer up north trying to beat by $700
but I didn't want to ditch the sales guy in front of me who go approval from his manager few times
to come down to our agreed price of 39,000.
I know I could've pushed harder and get few hundred bucks off but I didnt want to waste
any more time and energy so agreed on it. Family is very pleased with the car so that's
what matters the most.
Happy shopping everyone.
P.S: still unsure how someone in this thread got Touring Elite for $37,200. Must be heck of negotiator.
Sounds like you drive them "forever" so $700 will just be $100 a year. Plus you never know if the deal is real until you drive up north and find out any gotchas. Good move pulling the trigger.
So, $29k is ~$1,800 below invoice, so really not too shabby.
It looks like the EX and SE inventory is relatively modest, compared to the EX-Ls and Touring models. Not sure if that works in your favor or not, probably not..
It's about a $1,000 jump in price to the SE - maybe if you offered $500 more? Split the difference in other words.
You may want to play with a Price Promise certificate too. Or Costco for that matter. My guess is that you are beating the program numbers already though.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Great experience with Mr. Spradrow.

So your quote is okay, but still pretty average.
Dunno, it's kind of a pain, but you may want to shop the quote around to a half dozen dealers. Maybe get some Price Promise certificates at that link above (click on "Compare Dealer Offers") and compare it with your quote.
My numbers include the $900 destination btw.
Invoice is $30,664, MSRP is $33,450 and the True Market Value (TMV) average price paid around DC is $29,393. Those numbers all include the $900 destination.
So, back out your taxes and fees to get your selling price and compare that number to invoice.
I think that the EX-L is the sweet spot, because both navigation and entertainment are better done separately (i.e. phone and tablets). The higher-end models (Touring and Elite) have a few features that I would like (such as seat position memory), but too many that I don't care about---which is a pity because I'd happily spend more money on this purchase, but not on junk.
Oh and yes, I know the 2017 model is coming out soon, but there's likely going to be a feeding frenzy early on, with prices close to MSRP for a while instead of $6k discount, plus the early versions usually have a few bugs---let's let the early adopters deal with them.
My BIL lived in Oakland for a few years back in the 80s and I loved the museum there. Maybe we'll come visit you and you can drive us down to Jack London's cabin in your new Odyssey. I'll buy the coffee LOL.
If you click on one of those True Market Value links you can click on the trim tab and reconfigure your Odyssey the way you want it (and double check the zip code). Or drill down to the Build And Price link under the Make | Model tabs above to get to the same page.
Once you configure everything, you'll get invoice, MSRP and TMV. Those numbers will also show the destination and any ad fees and incentives (you may be eligible for other incentives that you can find at the Honda website, so check there if you are military or recent college grad, etc.). We don't track taxes and fees and you'll need to pay attention to the fees because they can get crazy.
Once you see the numbers you should see that TMV is coming in below invoice (that's not the case everywhere but NOVA is a good place for Honda buying).
Since TMV is an average, your goal is to get quotes well below invoice. We've seen some as much as $3,000 below invoice for month end deals.
[edit] Had a chance to play with the numbers and I get invoice of $33,856, MSRP of $36,950 and TMV $31,889, for an EX-L. So even the average is almost $2,000 below invoice.
So shoot for $3,500 below invoice on any trim and work your way up.
I have my new Ody EX-L, bought for 30,990 + doc/tax/license from Concord Honda. Theirs was the best quote out of a dozen quotes from local dealers. The next best quote was 31,700. They didn't have my choice of colors in stock, but located one quickly and had it ready for me in less than 24 hours after the initial contact. Very very good experience---but it sure pays to get many online quotes.
I am looking to buy 2016 Honda Odyssey SE model. I got the following price quote from Houston area dealer. Please let me know your thoughts on this.
Odyssey SE
INTERNET PRICE $28,016.37
DEST CHARGE $900.00
ACCESSORIES $1,904.00
PAINT & FABRIC PROTECTION $299.00
TRADE ALLOWANCE
SUB TOTAL $31,119.37
STATE SALES TAX(+) $1,944.96
DEALER DOCUMENTARY FEE(+) $150.00
TRADE PAYOFF(+)
VEHICLE INSP. FEE (+) $39.50
LICENSE$ TITLE $ (+) $99.55
DEALER'S INVENTORY TAX $67.21
CASH BALANCE ON VEHICLE(=) $33,420.59
** This includes the following accessories**
Pro Pack: $799 (wheel locks, cargo tray, door edge guards, mudflaps)
All Season Floor Mats: $399
Cross Bar with Roof Rails: $805
So, before the extras, your selling price is $28,916.
Invoice is $31,680 (with destination and a dumb $150 ad fee), MSRP is $34,400 and the TMV average price paid is $31,145.
So your selling price is good, but the extra fees are a bit much.
(I deleted your dupe post btw).
Last weekend I got EX-L with RES for 34K out-of-door from a NOVA dealer. No extras or options added.
selling price 31,946.63
sales tax 976.37
License and reg fee 458
title fee 10
doc fee 599
dlr online fee 10
What do you think? Is it a good deal?
Thanks
Getting the car over from another dealer so can't say I'm 100% satisfied yet, but hopefully when I get it tomorrow I will be.
I got the EX today for $31,000 out the door.
$29,023 was the dealer price. This was at Fairfax Honda. Very professional and courteous service at this place.
And Honda is giving 1.9% APR for 60 months for qualified buyers. Plus the military discount of $500 and/or $500 discount for grads. I qualified for the 1.9% APR for 60 months. But not the other 2 discounts.
Accessories Include - Wheel Locks, Doors Edge Protector, Paint Sealant, Cargo Tray, Splash Guards and Honda Remote Engine 2 installed. Took exactly 20 days of work to get this deal.
Not sure why Randy paid 1k more when I gave the details about the dealer as well.
The breakup I got was for 2016 EX-L with RES
Price : 31,314.03
Processing fee: 599
Tax (Cary,NC): 957.39
Non-tax fees: 129.58 (I guess title and tags)
Total : 33,000 OTD
Or may be Randy did not had a chance to look into the details I shared, and was too late.
Note: Took exactly 2 days to work out the deal with dealers, started calling them on Thursday evening and got the car on Sat morning. Called around 70-75 dealers. Cary/Raliegh dealers were the worst out of all and were not even taking calls or not calling back, I tried calling local dealers to give business and they were too busy to even talk to me ! one can forget getting good deals from them !
Price breakdown:
$29,990
+$900 dest
+$300 doc fee
+ roughly $1300 sales tax (I'm based out of VA, so 4.15%)
+ about $80 for tags and registration
Total OTD $32468
Accessories included: splash guards and wheel locks
Did all of the work via email--didn't have to speak to a real person once until I walked in the door to buy the van, which frankly was the best part of the deal. Used a Google voice account to receive voicemails (was great, as it translates the vmail instantly into text so you don't even have to listen to it). Took a solid 2 weeks of emails to get to this price. Must be some kind of regional sales incentive up in MD, as none of the dealers in NOVA could touch the prices I was getting from the MD dealers. First best price I received was from Sport Honda up in MD, which I used as a starting point to ask other dealers to beat. One by one, they each seemed to beat one another by $100 or $200, until finally Pohanka trumped them all and I felt I couldn't pass it up. Pohanka did low-ball my trade in (an old Civic) by a solid $2k, so I just sold it elsewhere. Was very pleased with Pohanka overall--was out the door in 2 hours or less, and probably 20-30 min of that was me wanting to test drive and play with the van.
Financed the whole thing with the promotional 0.9% financing. Put all the money I was going to spend on the van into a 3% add-on CD I had, so the arbitrage on the finance rates effectively takes several hundred add'l off the deal.
Thanks to all who contribute to these forums, as I would've had no reference point on how far I could potentially push things. Knowledge is power.
Happy hunting!
Good tip about the Google voice number. I have one of those to and I only use for situations like yours where I want to heavily screen calls. My number dates back to the GrandCentral days before Google bought them out - very handy.
Thanks for the comprehensive write-up.
I'll be buying an Odyssey from out-of-state today.
What documents do I need to ensure I receive at the end of transaction?
I'll be registering the vehicle myself, so does that involve a lot of paperwork?

Price + Destination - $27784

Total Price(except TT&L) - 28124

Since I bought it out-of-state I'll need to register it myself. I know registration rules differ from DMV to DMV but is there any URL that gives a summary?
Best place I've found for DMV info is the state's own DMV site. Some are better than others, but most are pretty good.
If you run into issues, the trick is to get someone, either on the phone or in person, who has worked there for a while and has seen everything.
Thanks in advance for any input you can give!
Let us know how it goes today (assuming you mean the end of August).
Thanks very much for the help!
Another question...how blunt are you all in your emails? Do you come right out and say, "Joe Bob over at the other dealership is offering 31,500...can you beat that?" Or is there a more subtle way to go about it?
