Need advice please. Ready to buy a 2016 EX AWD in North Carolina. If I am looking at it correctly, the Invoice should be $26, 525. I would like to email a few dealers but wanted to make sure my price was going to work. Should I offer $25,525 (including doc fees and destination charges)? I would then pay NC tax and tags additional of course. Am I in the right ballpark?

EX awd numbers are correct . In NC 1000 to 1500 below invoice is a good target price being your buying in the beginning of the month and not at the end. The end of June ends the 2nd quarter for car companies. Alot of dealers will discount lower prices on the last 2 days , last day of this month to move vehicles and meet sales quotas.

$25,025 would be buying at 1500 below invoice price . What ever that dealers doc fee charge is subtract it off your 1500 below number. That's your true buying Number.

The 498 dollar is mandatory......anywhere close to good?

Hi, just paid $26,619 for 2016 EXL AWD, $28,487 OTD in MI, delivered to my house 2.5 hrs away from dealer.  Bid it out to many dealers across the state and most dealers did not believe the deal.  I got modern steel withe the gray interior, looks really sharp!  Confident it was the best deal in the state.

Very nice - halfway decent doc fees too. And perfect color for down here. It's nice to see good deals "early" in the month.

    Hi Stever,
I have received the following quote from a dealer in NJ for a 2016 Honda, CR-V, AWD, EX-L:
    Selling Price: $26,195.00
    Destination $900.00
    Etch/Prep $299.00
    Sub Total $27,394.00
    Tax 7.00% $1,917.58
    NJ Tire Tax $7.50
    Motor Vehicle $410.00 CLASS 7 = 310 CLASS 8 = 410
    Documentation $498.00 MV TRANSFER 120
    OTD TOTAL $30,227.08

I have offered him- OTD- $29,000 and he said it's too low. What should be my price target?

Let's start over with this one, shall we?

    Selling Price: $26,195.00
    Destination $900.00

So the selling price is really $27,095.

    Etch/Prep $299.00

Worthless, and Honda pays the dealers for prepping new cars.

    Sub Total $27,394.00. Let's call it $27,095

    Tax 7.00% $1,917.58
    NJ Tire Tax $7.50
    Motor Vehicle $410.00 CLASS 7 = 310 CLASS 8 = 410

Not much you can do about these, although I don't know what the Class 7/Class 8 stuff is.

    Documentation $498.00

Any doc fee over $50 is too much. Most of this number is dealer profit.

     MV TRANSFER 120

I assume this is another legit NJ fee?

    OTD TOTAL $30,227.08.

It looks like your selling price is $1724 below invoice. That's good and better than we were seeing most of the first half of the year.

Add in 7% tax and the tire fee and the Motor Vehicle and MV numbers, if they are legit to get an OTD number.

I get $1,896 for taxes, add in just the tire tax and your OTD bottom line would be $28,999. If the Motor Vehicle Class 8 and MV transfer fees are legit, then the OTD number rises to $29,529.

It seems like you and the dealer aren't all that far apart - there's $530 in fees I don't understand and the etching and doc fee that are too high.

  • roadwinroadwin Member Posts: 4
great. thank you. here is my revised calculation.
    selling price: 27,095 tax:1896=subtotal=28,991
MV=410 (120 is included in this)
    total=29,101, (+ - 300 doc fee which I need to negotiate) = ~29, 400
    is this reasonable?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    edited June 2016
    I think it's very reasonable..

The dealers usually say they have to charge the same doc fee for everyone or they'll get sued for discrimination.

So, to avoid that argument, just focus on negotiating the OTD price and if they ask where you got the numbers, then you can spell it out for them. But you don't care how they assign the money to the line items as long as the bottom line is okay.

(I'll try to coffee up better for the next set of questions. :) )

EX AWD MSRP 28,195. OTD 26,112. Free weather tech mats and a $250 gift card. How does this look?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
True Market Value is just a shade under invoice at $26,474.

Unless you're somewhere like Oregon with no sales tax, your quote looks good. What's the selling price before taxes and fees?
  • sqwalkersqwalker Member Posts: 1
I purchased a 2016 Steel Metallic CRV EX-L 2WD in San Diego this weekend.

    MSRP $29,345
    Dealer Price: $26,000
    Alarm: $395
Doc, fees, tax (8%), registration: $2,505

    OTD price: $28,900

I want to thank all the folks who contributed to this forum. It certainly helped me save a lot of money.

Hi Stever, can you please let me know the cost for rust proofing the new Honda CRV? I live in Michigan and due to heavy snow thinking of getting it done. Any insight into this help.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
You know, I moved to NM about two years ago after living a couple of blocks from Lake Superior in the UP for four years. My van has the salt scars to prove it too. Yet I never knew anyone up there who got their cars oiled or rustproofed. Seems like that's fallen out of favor a bit in the States.

Depending on where you are in MI, you may want to cruise up to Ontario. It sounds like oiling and rust-proofing is still big up there.

    Anyone?
  • shahidskshahidsk Member Posts: 14
Well I live in Farmington Hills and drive to work for Detroit. should I consider getting it done, is it really worth it?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I'd worry about trapping moisture and dirt under the undercoating when the stuff is applied (guess that's not an issue with oiling). If you did it almost immediately when the car is brand new, then you'd be less likely to mess it up.

On the van that we got used up there, there's very little rust underneath. The lip of the hood has bubbled though and the alloy wheels are trashed.

Might be fun to drive up to Port Huron, enjoy lunch at Chicken In The Rough (great food!) and then cruise over the bridge to Sarnia and chat up some undercoating shops.

Me? I'd skip it. (the undercoating, not the chicken :) )
  • shahidskshahidsk Member Posts: 14
Thanks Stever, I also spoke with few Honda dealers nearby Detroit and all of them stated they don't rust proof cars and is not required since new cars come with better corrosion standards.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I agree. Honda has a 5-year/unlimited mile corrosion limited warranty. Probably just covers actual perforation but that's a good start.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,200
Last time I had a car with "rust-proofing" was 1982. All cars rusted terribly, then, but the first place it started rusting was around the holes they drilled to spray in the rust-proofing.

Looking at a new CRV EX-L for a girl friend here in Salt Lake City, I think they are all AWD here, didn't realize there was anything else

It looks like sticker price is $30,580. First contact with a very nice salesman gets the price to $29099, which is $1 over invoice of $29098. Truecar.com backs up that invoice price.

Out the door with sales tax, license, reg, and $299 doc fee (I know I know) is ~$31650.

It looks like you guys are managing $3-4K off sticker. I offered them $30,000.00 OTD, he is working on it. What do you think the odds are?

May be worth traveling if the deals are better!

    Thanks

There is a $500 dealer incentive on the CR-V, this month, so factor that into your negotiations.

Invoice is $24,420 and TMV is a bit less than invoice at $24,022.

We've been seeing selling prices from $1,500 to $2,000 below invoice just south of you in the DC area but dealers in your area historically (meaning the last year or so) haven't been that aggressive. But car sales are easing a bit, so I'd start around $22,000 and work my way up. You can add in your taxes to get an OTD number - just mind the fees.

That $500 incentive that Honda is giving dealers this month should help a bit too.

I saw that Honda is giving 500$ discount for new graduates that I can avail. It brings down the OTD to 28671$. Is that a good deal?

    Congrats on the CR-V!

NoVA is a good Honda buying area, and we often see deals between $1,000 and $2,000 below invoice.

Invoice is $30,223 and MSRP is $32,145. TMV is $800 below invoice at $29,424.

The protection package is junk (that's the dealer's profit right there). But the selling price is $2,800 below invoice and that's a killer number. Doesn't hurt to shop the quote around, but I'd be happy with your deal right now.

Almost missed you @freakierahul. Looks like CR-V prices are getting more aggressive in the Midwest too.

Invoice is $28,819, MSRP is $30,645 and TMV is (again), $800 below invoice at $28,081. My numbers include destination and I assumed AWD.

So your selling price is almost $1,100 below invoice. Not that long ago we'd be excited to see a deal in MN or WI for $500 below invoice so you're doing good. The extra incentive is gravy.

The "ratio" won't change that much - look at TMV and invoice, and aim for $2,000 or more off invoice on the selling price.

Then add in your taxes and a small doc fee and that number will be your target OTD price.

It was Hillside Honda. I ended up going to Advantage Honda afterwards since they were willing to match that. Advantage added an application fee of $75, sales tax was 8.625% (so about $2000). I got a remote start so that's going to increase my total OTD price by about 600-700. New plates and registration were about $215. I don't have any docs with me, but I believe I ended u paying $28500 after everything.

Any recent buyers in DFW (Dallas Ft Worth)? I am looking for a 2016 CRV EX FWD without dealer-installed accessories.
    MSRP (incl destination) = $26895
Invoice (incl destination and $100 ad fee) = $25409

David McDavid Frisco is offering $1150 below invoice (i.e. $24259) for Costco members plus there's another $500 manufacturer to dealer cash. Final sale price = $23759
    OTD is $25664 (23759 * 1.0625 + $240 for some fee which I can't remember + $180 doc fee).
Dealer installed accessories (pin stripe, tint, door edge guard, mud flap, trunk tray, wheel lock) are $1696 and Costco has a 35% discount. These prices are highly inflated above MSRP but dealers have to make their profit somewhere!
They were willing to sell a car without accessories but let's see if they hold up to the bargain when it comes to actually signing the paperwork.

Costco Auto's website indicates that the sale price is $24032 at McKinney Honda which means that they probably have a slightly bigger Costco discount.

    Autonation Lewisville quoted the following:
    23051 base sale price
24547 after adding accessories (pin stripe, tint, door edge guard, mud flap, trunk tray, wheel lock)
    OTD 26443
The salesman (only spoke over the phone) was very nice and he said that they cannot sell without accessories as they would be making a loss! Even without accessories he said that the OTD price would only be $350 lower which is not much of a deal.

I am going to wait until the end of this month to see if I can get $25k OTD (or lower).

The best rate i found for CRV EX FWD is $25,300/- OTD. (including dealer installed accessories) at Honda Fortworth. I have compared 15 odd dealerships at DFW (Screen shot might help you more).

Costco auto program did not work. When I approached dealers with Costco Auto program, I received quote with $500 more price.

Please do let me know if you get any better price than this. I am looking to buy EXL FWD

    Good Luck!!!

For 97229, TMV is a couple of hundred less than invoice ($26,782 vs $26,599 TMV - MSRP is $28,195)

Getting the same numbers for Vancouver. Checked Salem for grins and no difference there either.

Since TMV is an average, I'd try for $26,000 and get some quotes. The Pac NW is tough for Honda buyers in general but the prices may be easing a bit.

Oh, there's a $256 ad fee out your way that you can tell the dealer to eat. It's a "legit" fee but there's no reason for you to pay for their ads. My numbers include destination ($900) too.

I'm shopping for a CR-V Touring AWD white with black interior in Northern VA (20171). I've got online quotes from 3 local dealers, and 2 of the 3 quotes came in under TMV with no negotiation.

TMV is $31590. Best quote is $30,595 + $599 doc fee.

I understand there's a $500 dealer incentive this month, plus it's end of the month and quarter soon. Wondering what price I should target.
