Definitely more of a challenge than one that is close by, but here's what I'd do:
Consider posting here to see if someone is willing to go check the car out for you:
zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?4294-I-Need-Someone-To-Check-Out-A-BMW-330-ZHP-For-Me/page69
Lot of enthusiasts there who would likely be happy to go drive a ZHP and let you know their impressions.
Or, plenty of services where they'll go check out a car for you for $100 or so.
Once you get comfortable with the condition, just a matter of negotiating price and arranging shipping. Lot of choices out there for shipping companies - probably cost $500-$1,000 ($1k at the top end).
But I really don't think that one is sticking around - if you're serious, I'd give them a deposit with a purchase pending the outcome of an inspection.
Easy peasy!
You're welcome,
@breld the enabler
I do agree with you; I don't think this car will stick around too long. It just checks too many boxes. And I bet it gets close to the asking price, too.
@graphicguy - as soon as my trip to Cincinnati was confirmed, I told my vendor I wanted to have lunch at Skyline. Been too many years since I've had Cincinnati Chili. It was as good as I remembered.
I was pretty impressed with the Alfa Romeo Guilia. They had a loaded TI model that stickered for $50K. Comparing it to the Jaguar XE, right next door at $55K, the Alfa wins, hands down.
Also, the new Miata RF with the folding targa panel is pretty cool.
And, as usual, massive sticker shock. A loaded CR-V Touring is over $35K (very nice looking, btw). The Focus ST with Recaro seats for $30K seems fairly priced.
Mustang GT with a stick and almost no options was $41K (just the way I'd want it).
BMW only had six vehicles, and five of them were electric or hybrid.
The Acura display looked kind of pitiful next to Lexus.
Mercedes was a no-show!
Land Rover Discovery, the cheapest model in their line-up, looks like a Suburban next to the Jaguar F-Pace. I would have guessed they were about the same size, before seeing them in person.
OK...now I'm bummed. Jag is on "my list". I had heard since the two Benz dealers on the Cincinnati side were just purchased, and was still sort of absorbing that transaction. The one on the KY side (Ft Mitchell) didn't want to foot the entire bill for the car show. So, no Mercedes.
Acura has been sort of like that for the last few car shows. I don't even know why they show up if that's the kind of showing they're putting out there.
I can't see myself jumping from my Caddy experience (frying pan) into an Alfa experience (fire?). I'm even a little skittish about Jaguar.
The more I think about it, the Accord is looking better and better.
Walt...what are you seeing the '17 Touring Accords going for around these parts?
You ever get to test driving a Golf R? Would be interested in hearing about test drives of that car.

Man, if you hire someone for $100 to go check out a car, and the car is even better than expected, what's to stop them from buying it themselves, and just giving you your $100 back?
They can just tell you it sold right before they got there.

Yeah....I've got a lot of experience with unreliable cars. I should be used to it by now.

Cans of the 15 oz chili with meat, no beans, are $2.99 at Kroger. When we met friends in Pigeon Forge, TN, day after Christmas, I took 32 cans of that and 10 cans of LaRosa's Pizza sauce to them for their cravings for the good old days in Cincy. They used to live in Cincy Metro but now live in upstate SC. Way upstate.
Imid....that's a cool sight. There's another place that is only open around the Holidays that puts together gift baskets with Greater's Ice Cream, Skyline 3 Ways, Frisch's tartar sauce, Montgomery Inn Ribs, and some other local favorites. They pack them in dry ice and send them anywhere.
Michaell.....people don't understand Skyline until they have some. LOL!

Yeah....I've got a lot of experience with unreliable cars. I should be used to it by now.
Gotta say, the Alfa is a "looker".
My experience with unreliable cars started and ended with my first, the Dodge Lemon.
My friends had UBER reliable vehicles, like Civics and Geo Prisms (cheaper Corolla) that were indestructible even going head to head with a tank (German, Russian, or USA). My parents and older brother had a string of flawless Toyota's. Yes, I mean they really never needed to see the dealership after the purchase date.
My first car after the Neon was the '03 Honda Accord LX V6 Coupe (a rare bird). I had the Honda dealership put on the one thing it lacked, alloy wheels. Otherwise, it was an EX V6 without leather and a moon-roof. Since Honda's leather was pretty mediocre at best back then, I considered cloth a good thing. While not the most exciting car, it was quick with the 5-speed automatic. It was pretty darn reliable if you can overlook the new auto transmission put in at 42K miles. A couple other knickknack issues, but nothing frequent.
Next up was the '06 Audi A3 (106K miles) that somehow topped the Accord for reliability over the long term (but just barely; only had Honda 65K miles). Then a "light-bulb" and "detached wiper fluid hose"away from flawless S4 (48K miles), and a TTS that's proven solid (12K miles). VW even was super solid for 17 months and almost 20K miles.
I even blame the fluid hose detachment on the body shop.
Kia is doing very well in Consumer Reports (at least the Optima was shining). My experience with the Kia always seems to mirror CR closely. Just crossed 6,000 miles. If Audi/VW/Kia/Honda keeps performing the way they have been for me, I see no reason to risk venturing off elsewhere.
'18 Porsche Macan Turbo, '16 Audi TTS, Wife's '19 VW Tiguan SEL 4-Motion
2+ years on the Hyundai and not a hiccup. And that was a freshly redesigned model. So no complaints. Though the Acura has been fine too. 4.5 years and zero warranty work.
I think GG should buy a Giulia at his first opportunity. We would be in for at least 2 years worth of entertainment as he tries to get Sergio to buy it back.
I've gotta say, I don't think I've ever owned an unreliable car. I qualify that by noting that I don't believe I've ever had any major out of pocket expenses, nor been stranded, due to a reliability issue. Yes, the XF just had a few TSB items addressed, and the "weeping" water pump was likely a major problem gestating, but at least warranty covered it. And I got to drive a totally uninspiring LR Disco Sport for a bit more than a week... The XF continues to impress me as a great, all around luxury sports sedan.
Now, I've had quite poorly screwed together cars, looking at you Dodge/Chrysler, but they were reliable. Company cars, the totally vanilla Olds 88, Mercury Sable and Dodge Intrepid were all reliable. Well, the 88 did spring a leak at the top of the gas tank, but as a company car, didn't cost me anything. And, it was a '90s GM product...
My father, on the other hand, bought a Cadillac Catera

Alfa was just track tested vs BMW M3, Caddy ATSV and MB 63 on motortrend with a video; interesting results; Final duel Alfa vs BMW on racetrack,,,,, pretty good video with times posted on all 4 with pro driver
@michaell Next time you are in town, we'll go to Dixie Chili, then you'll really see what all the fuss is about.
Hey, if the Alfa has a warranty and free loaners, I'd take a chance. At least it wouldn't be boring. The Jag XE reminded me of an Infiniti. Nicely equipped, lots of power, but boring.
I agree about the RDX vs. CR-V, except for the power. An AWD RDX with tech is about $41K MSRP. That's only $6K more than the CR-V Touring (as long as your are going for "luxury"). Hard to justify an RDX, if you are looking at a $30K CR-V, though.
They had a Subaru Impreza hatchback (not a Crosstrek) that stickered over $30K.

I think everyone has heard about my Catera at one point or another. It was a '98 CPO bought in '99. Beautiful car with all the options including heated rear seats and electric rear window shade. It drove nicely but was a garage queen. Couldn't keep it out of the shop. I sold it to CarMax about a year later.

I think the CRV Touring is better equipped than an RDX tech. plus the tecnology is a whole generation newer. And even the performance delta is smaller, since the Turbo engine is decently quick. Not quite as fast, but does get better MPG ratings. Close enough for vast majority of buyers is my guess.
But, I am guessing that the RDX (seriously long in tooth at this point) is going to be redone for 2018 too, since it is based on the CRV platform. Will be interesting to see if they ditch the V6 and go with a bigger version (maybe a 2.0l) version of the turbo 4 instead?
Edit: I think the Touring is equivalent to the Advance package, and that with AWD stickers for $43,900. So a pretty big difference. Real world, likely much smaller.
Same with my father, SDA. He enjoyed driving it the 30% of the time it wasn't in the shop. It was not long in his stable.

Curiously, and this wasn't planned as I had intended to buy an Orchid Pearl Accord, I ended up with the Champagne Frost Pearl that is very similar in color to my '98 Catera! My '85 Renault Alliance convertible was more reliable than the Catera, and the Renault was no Camry.

Officially it was 80 in Denver today. Hottest day in February ever.
My '85 Renault Alliance convertible was more reliable than the Catera, and the Renault was no Camry.
An Alliance that was more reliable than anything is a concept I can't come to grips with. I rented a few of them back in the early '80s out of Dayton, and one of them was the only rental car that left me stranded.

Really cold here today. Getting close to single digits overnight.

Well, I agreed on a price for the Q7 I was looking at down in Texas. Hopefully the buying process goes smoothly. This should be another fun trip, though I think the family is coming along this time, so dynamics will be far different than the last couple of out-of-state purchases! This will be a long drive home (even longer than the Ohio trip last August), but we're going to visit some friends along the way, so it should be worth it.
The wife nixed my plan to drive through Denver on the way home, so no chance of a meet up with the Colorado gang this time around.
I'll update with details once it is more than just penciled in.

I pitched this to my wife last night around 10pm. I mentioned this ZHP thing, told her there was a car, where it was and that I was thinking of going to see it on saturday in Berkeley. Her reply was that I should go on Friday, so that I could take her to brunch on Sunday. Another CCBA enabler.
Greetings from sunny Foxboro, I mean Boston! Temp in the high teens, a foot+ of fresh powder. As winter should be. Ran 4.8 miles at lunch with the boys. Toes are still thawing, we're just not that bright...
